In 2016, The Rev. Gary Graves will attend his seventh United Methodist General Conference. Graves is the petition secretary for the Commission on General Conference. In this role, he receives and processes the nearly 1,000 petitions that will be voted on to shape the direction of the church. This role is in addition to Graves’ full-time job as the pastor of Paris United Methodist Church in Kentucky. General Conference only happens once in four years but Graves and other Commission members work constantly behind the scenes to lay the groundwork for this most important gathering of The United Methodist Church. “We’re not voting delegates. We operate behind the scenes. And I think that is a part of our calling,” says Graves.
