Thank you for the attention to Freeborn Garrettson. He was a very important figure in the establishment of the Methodist church in America, then known as the Methodist Episcopal church. ----- He was also an important and effective abolitionist. The history of the first phases of the American anti-slavery movement is an overlooked history. It is not a story of war and violence, but it a story of the foundations of far-reaching social change. Quakers freed their enslaved people before other groups. A critical decision took place at the Third Haven Meeting in Easton Maryland in about 1768 when the congregation decided that all members who held slaves would free them. Third Haven was the Yearly Meeting, so it was very influential. Methodists followed this example but did not document the activity as thoroughly. Methodist did not adopt the practice of expelling slave holders from their congregations. However, because the of the large number of Methodist in Maryland and Delaware, more slaves were freed because of Methodist anti-slavery activity, than manumissions produced by the Quakers in those states. In 1790 more black Americans were free than enslaved in Kent County Delaware. Garrettson and Asbury had lived in the southern portion of Kent County and a zealous Quaker was active in the northern portion of the county (Duck Creek Meeting). By 1810 72% of the black population in Delaware was free, although the state had not passed an emancipation act. Black Americans were welcomed into the Methodist church. They did not join the Quaker faith in large numbers. Richard Allen and two other black Methodists attended the legendary Christmas Conference in Baltimore in 1783. Freeborn Garrettson wrote the wonderful anti-slavery piece "A Dialogue Between Do-Justice and A Professing Christian." Black American Methodist preacher and abolitionist Daniel Coker much have been inspired by it when he wrote A Dialogue between a Negro Preacher and A Virginia Farmer. That pamphlet preceded the establishment of any black American anti=slavery newspaper and thus was a foundational effort in the space of black American abolitionism. Within the confines of the American anti-slavery movement, Asbury and Garrettson took the lead of John Woolman and Anthony Benezet to an entirely different and higher level. Our history suffers because of the humbleness of those men, even though our way of life was uplifted by them.

I am not seeing a lot of difference between this type of hyper-irreligiousness and what Joel Osteen is doing. One really has to wonder what or who they have in mind when they pray (or should it be prey, in the case of the sodomites?)?
