Savage opress his brother finds him, mauls story is awesome in the clone wars series, he's only got the spider legs for about 5 minutes then he's back to basically the way he was, with robot legs of course
Nice to see the side by side. I bought pieces of the ssv2 for my custom and I think sideahow is better than hot toys crazy to say. Appreciate the review and I subbed.
Chris brother a few things first. Happy Anniversary to you and the wifey. Congratulations on the new home buddy. Hope your enjoying the desert. Need to get that Speeder outside for some true light desert pics. Back to the topic on hand, I've watched almost all your review and this is without a doubt your best video yet. Hands down your making the other CZcams reviewers up their game. I was able to watch the whole thing in 4K wireless the whole time. Little side note, the support for the Speeder does not look correct , like you found out. Not that i have much experience with stand making but no one would design a stand that is meant to be loose and leaning. Anyway man you nailed this review. Very entertaining.
Was thinking about "upgrading" to the HT Maul but your comparison changed my mind...although I'd certainly like to change up the lightsaber. Thanks for saving me some cash!
Hot Toys may win on accessories and tailoring but I far prefer the headsculpt and body build of the SS one - it's also more in line with how he looks in Clone Wars and Rebels which is where Maul really shone as a character
my take,....horns on the Hot toys are spot on ..sideshow ones are too tiny bit too long. the face is slightly too wide on hot toys (doesn't look like ray Park), the black markings from horns down to eyes are too thick on HT but smidgen too thin on sideshow, belt looks better quality+detail on HT, boots are pretty much the same, HT the fat-suit doesn't look right, Darth maul isn't supposed to be beefed up, sideshow his shoulders need to be raised up a bit with padding (would make it look much better), I'm glad I didn't pre-order this HT, the sideshow one is still better in my opinion + the HT screaming head doesn't really remind me of the film because he never does that only clenches his teeth (they should have done that swap out head instead). all the other HT's accessories are nice like fanned blades and speeder, hope this helps
I have the Sideshow version. And my only issue with the figure, is that I think the lightsaber blades are a little bit too long. Can anyone tell me if I'm just imagining this or are they too long?
That is a perfect figure actually. I build my own cathode sabers so that's a non issue. Sideshow otherwise nailed him, although he was initially pretty overpriced.
hey man, too bad to hear the comments on its rope, the reason i did not buy the "duel on naboo" version was because it didnt have a rope and i think it is a must for a sith. i was wondering if you have been able to get it look better or you just gave up on it?
The Sideshow Darth Maul is much better - the HS in particular is superior. The HT bike looks nice but impractical on that ridiculous hollow acrylic pipe - which doesn't even fit tightly. Keep the SSC version, but keep the bike and outer cloak from HT. You can buy clear acrylic rods fairly easily and cheaply, to test fit a better support for the HT bike.
If you can put the SSC portrait onto the HT body, then you got the perfect figure. The HT portrait while still great, does not look like Ray Park. I won't be getting rid of my SSC Maul after seeing this. Thank you for posting this detailed video.
So is your Sideshow DM the newer one or the original one from years ago? Are you still looking to sell him? You can pm me if you are and what you’re asking for it. I’d be interested in what you want for him.
Bob Marotta It’s the newer one. I’m currently selling it for $180. I can never figure out how to get the direct messaging to work on CZcams. Feel free to message me over on Instagram. My username is the same. It’s just easier.
Yes they do. I had already recorded almost 45 minutes of a review, and the light up function is essentially the same mechanism as all previous Star Wars figures that have utilized it. It’s a real pain in the ass to detach the arm, and then connect the other one, and vice versa, and to go back-and-forth with that during a review, even if it’s not recorded, takes forever. Crixly Crixly
Also the paint apps, horns and eyes on the Hot Toys version on Mauls face are much more movie accurate, the tattoos on the Sideshow version are not as movie accurate, they messed them up. Check out a movie still.
I’m not sure about that, because I referenced the movie while I was doing the review, and the paint application on his face during many of the scenes that are lighted well, and is makeup is not that dark. However in scenes that were darker lit, the paint application was more parallel. However, like I discussed in the video, body type, symmetry, sideshow still has a leg up.Boba Vader
@@IAmToys I was mainly referring too the actual black tattoos on the head and nose, they are not quite right on the Sideshow version, they should be thicker and more noticeable👍🏻
The Sideshow does looks better, which is rare.... from the costume to the facial expressions. SS is more movie accurate and the colouring is more realistic too. I don't like the facial expressions on the HT Maul since he never really opened his mouth in the movie... I don't think they referenced the movie TBH. Thanks for the review! This video really helped with my decision making :)
Good observations. Hot Toys completely misunderstood the character of Maul in TPM when they made that raging face sculpt. Maul was never angry like that. There was a cold, hateful glint in his eyes (which the SSC version captures perfectly), but his look throughout the film was one of arrogance and disdain. As good as the second sculpt looks, it's real pity they didn't make it with him gnashing his teeth.
Sadly the articulation range for the shoulders is shitty at best....it does not give to rotate the shoulder in such a way as to place the lightsaber above the head.... sad considering is darth maul, not jabba the hutt....
So I will definitely address both of your points there, definitely did not have the neck pushing forward, he was standing straight up, if I had tried to push head back, he would’ve been slightly looking up. In several other video reviews, he also looks the same just standing there. As far as the eyes being slightly crossed, This is not going to affect actual head size or color of paint application, which were my primary points of comparison for the most part. As far as expression, slightly cross eyed or not, Lol, you can tell that the sideshow face is more relaxed, as opposed to the hot toys version which has more of an arched brow, which was another comparison aspect I mentioned. This isn’t my first video review. Lol. P-O-Pie
i noticed you stated a mass-produced factory paint job, you are aware that these head sculpts are hand-painted? I'm not trying to be a know it all or be "that guy" who corrects you in your vids, love your reviews.. but have been doing a lot of work and research on the time and effort that goes into the 1/6 scale production, i was fortunate to see some behind the scenes aspects of what Hot Toys is/was working on and with exception from the eyes, which look to be decals, with hand-applied gloss all head sculpts are individually painted
That’s actually not accurate. JC Hong does the master paint application for the prototype. From what I understand he is then in charge of making sure the factory production is on par with his. If he was doing the paint application for all the heads, he would be hand painting more than 2000+ sets. Unless the original artist is doing the paint app for the entire run, I consider it mass produced due to the deferment to another party to render it. Additionally the figure itself is also considered as mass produced in general due to the overall process in which the figure is made and the quantities that are produced. Renz
@@IAmToys I see, that makes sense in and of itself looking at it from that perspective, you are correct jc Hong does the main paint app I thought you meant it was doen by a factory as in machine..but i have witnessed and did documentation on the master head sculpt in which a handful are painted then used as guides by other painters who use them as they hand paint the remaming figures and another thing some collectors dont realize is that they dint produce tens of thousands of these figures the more popular ones see a run if about 7,500 give or take less popular about 5k and then molded/casted figures about 10k or a little more depending on popularity but going back to topic I was only stating it as it seemed as if it was being said that they were painted by factories or machines when in fact they are painted by human hands
The Sideshow for me is the more accurate face sculpt to Ray Parker who plays Darth Maul , the Hot Toys one is off and the reason for that is because the face on the Hot Toys version looks chubby looking and also the face is not long enough and also the body looks off as well on the Hot Toys version because Hot Toys have used a stupid body suit for the body and all that is doing to the figure is making him look fat looking, I don't know why Hot Toys use body suits on certain figures that don't require it, maybe Hot Toys does this to cut costs and if you take the body suit off you can't do that as the clothes will look baggy on the figure, all Hot Toys needed to do was make the body a little bit thicker and then make the clothes to fit the body instead of making a body suit and then having to make the clothes bigger to fit that body suit because all that is doing is adding extra layers and giving the body a fat look and also the clothes don't hang so well either. The sideshow version the body looks amazing and slim looking just like how Ray Parker looked who played Darth Maul and that's because sideshow got the body proportions right and did not put a stupid body suit on their figure but saying that, the Hot Toys does have the better paint job but I'm afraid that's it.
It's to cut down costs I think so they don't have to use more plastic for the bodies and they should not do that because we pay a lot of money for these Hot Toy figures I Am. Toys.

Only just came across this review, it's definitely one of the best out there for this figure.
Hot Toys looks to be a better figure and package overall, but I think Side Show looks like a much nicer, more screen accurate piece.
Awesome detailed review! Im planning to get 1. Do u still have the figure? How is the pleather belt part? Is it still ok? No flaking or breaking?
No issues so far. 🤞🏽

Chris, great review, as always! But you didn't say your "score" for the headsculpt and for the overall package. What would it be?
Overall, a 8. The sculpt is 7 to 7.5. Putruko O A
hey man, too bad to hear the comments on its rope, the reason i did not buy the "duel on naboo" version was because it didnt have a rope and i think it is a must for a sith. i was wondering if you have been able to get it look better or you just gave up on it?
Great review! Sad to see how bad the outer robe is though :(
Yeah man, total shite. Toy Cult
For me, the shouting head really gave the edge for the hot toys for my purchase

The 'SWOOSH" look blades also came with both versions of Anakin,ESB Darth Vader and also ROTS Obi-Wan.
