    A TEENAGER who was born with dwarfism is fulfilling her dream of becoming a professional horse rider and says it has helped her accept her disability. Megan Gregory, from Croydon, was born with Achondroplasia - a type of dwarfism that affects the growth of arms and other long bones. In addition to this, Megan has a frontal bossing on the top of her head and ‘trident' hands, meaning they all measure to the same size.The 19-year-old spent her school years being bullied but after taking up horse riding and started to compete two years ago, she has new-found confidence. Megan lives a normal life despite her disability, admitting she has “always liked a challenge”.

    Good God i hope thats not a harsh bit because she never loosens the reins! You can watch the horse's body language and just tell that he is not happy. Also he has a bit of a swayback and a very large feed belly. She should be commended for finding something that calms her and working hard at it, but I will not treat her differently because of her condition. If you ever read this, please know I'm not attacking you, there are just things you can do differently for the horse's well being.

    This is bravery, so much love from all your fellow equestrians. This community will always be here for you and do will all your friends and family! BUT, there's no excuse for ripping the horse's face off and using the whip unnecessarily. Someone is going to get annoyed at this comment but there isn't an excuse and as amazing as this story is she shouldn't be treated differently because of her dwarfism, meaning she can take a bit of criticism the same as everyone else.

  • @jp8649
    @jp8649 Před 5 lety +9

    Jeeze the comments on here are nasty and I'm guessing from young people. As a fellow disabled (though newly disabled) rider, I tip my hat to you, Megan. It is outstanding to see people pursuing and thriving doing things they love under any circumstance, but this is exceptional with your story. While 5 years is not a long time to be riding I can see a lot of potential in you and I hope you keep this up. Thank you for giving that lovely old mare a second chance. I love seeing old broodmares getting second jobs.
    The bit she is using is called a Baucher, it's one of the softest bits you can put in your horse's mouth with zero pole pressure and direct pressure to the mouth without any added weight. She put pressure on the bit for about 3 seconds (which is average) and while the horse did open its mouth I hardly think a few shots of her riding is enough to condemn her as a poor rider. The shot of her using her crop, which was a tap, looked like she changed her mind on where she was headed. I've done that before, it happens. Disabled riders often have to rely on extra aids to help us communicate with our mounts. I feel like equestrians jump too quickly on these things now without actually having any experience or knowing whole stories. They just want to feel more knowledgeable or something and it's really sad. I've seen people jump to conclusions on so many para-riders and it's gross.
    *Edit. I just read that she used the crop bc her mare was backing into a horse behind her, which is appropriate. You know, instead of your horse going back into someone and potentially getting both of you hurt. Also, why do people think keeping contact = being too harsh on the reins? Depends heavily on the discipline I guess.

    Good luck girl - stuff the negative comments, even professional equestrians aren’t perfect! Pandora and you clearly have a bond and it’s clear that the odd mistake from you is accepted by Pandora as she understands there is no malice in your actions (and she can still be a bit naughty and cheeky!). Great to see an older pony still enjoying life, rather than left to rot in a field “retired” - more like abandoned in many cases (so many equines spend the bulk of their life in a routine of exercise, feed, stable, etc then get dumped in a field to “enjoy” retirement, personally I feel they deserve more). Keep going , as you have more courage than many others and I hope you find another pony when Pandora is no longer able to be your partner.
