    Update on Will’s hand:
    Turns out Will got jammed so bad in this video that it caused some minor damage to the ulnar nerve near his thumb 😬. But long story short: after 10-12 days of ice/rest/ibuprofen, we’re 100% back baby! Definitely gonna be wearing a thumbpro guard next time we do this lol
    And one more thing to note here:
    You'll notice a different between the pitch velocity being shown (Stalker Radar Gun - yellow numbers) and the velo being shown from the Hittrax. That's because the Stalker (meant to capture pitch velo) measures the velocity of the ball right at the release of the pitcher/machine (peak velo) - this is how all pitch velocity is recorded.
    And the Hittrax (meant to capture batted ball velo) measures the velocity of the ball off the bat, and the pitch velo at the time it reaches home plate where it has slowed down a bit due to air drag.

      Good distinction here. Hittrax + Blast data is very important for batted-ball efficiency ratings (how well the exit velo matches up to the pitch). Old School stadium guns use to also measure pitch speed closer to the plate before they moved to out- of- hand speed. That's why many people still consider nolan ryan to be the fastest pitcher ever, because he was measured at 100.9 mph 10 ft in front of home plate which at the hand is closer to 108 mph

    As a regular guy, I can appreciate how hard this is. When I was younger (in my early 20s), I tried the "fastball" lane in the batting cages. The pitches were low 80s mph and you got 20 of them. I foul tipped one. Whiffed on the others. I think the regular lanes were about 60 mph and I would usually do quite well in those. The jump from the 60s to the 80s increases the level of difficulty exponentially. I can only imagine how much harder the 100 mph balls are to hit. Many people don't realize the size of the talent gap between pro athletes and regular people (even regular people who are pretty good at whatever sports thing).

    • @deadarmd
      @deadarmd Před rokem +4

      It's just reps. If you see 80s consistently over a few years and you already have a swing, it becomes "easier" to time. When they start breaking or falling off the table that's when it's a real bummer

    Well, you know where the pitch is going to be, and the speed it is going to travel. So there is no concern for "chin music", a curve, or even a straight change. Having said that, even after years of practice, I was well below average when it came to hitting a moving ball with a piece of sporting equipment. That would include a thrown pitch with a bat, a tennis serve with a racket, or a ping pong ball with a paddle. However, I could catch, throw, and shoot a basketball fairly well.

  • @DustinPlatt
    @DustinPlatt Před rokem +10

    I was hitting 103 MPH pitches like 17 out of 20 pitches. My exo velocity was getting to 107-110 and launch angles were around 55-64 degrees. On Hit Trax software I was hitting 490-520 footers to right, I was definitely milliseconds late on most of them.
    Then I woke up and felt like shit. Got up. Took a piss, and went back to bed and proceeded to dream drag bunts the rest of the night.

    Moral of the story is that, if you have good technique, it’s all about timing and seeing that ball. It can only come so fast. If you can hit 94 you can hit 100 and when you get on a machine you can make a lot of assumptions. One of these days I want to step in front of a legit 100 flail 20 times then start maybe connecting 😂

  • @Tevatron044
    @Tevatron044 Před rokem +5

    I've done some research on this and from what i found, when it comes to ideal speeds, it turns out there is a weird correlation to pitch speed and swing speed. So if you're swing is 90 mph, a 90 mph fastball would be ideal for you in terms of reaction time and overall power. The higher the overall velocity, the lower the COR of the ball, but the more energy it has. Based on pure momentum formulas, a machine that swings the bat like a person against a machine that pitches perfect heaters with perfect accuracy can have an ideal pitch speed of up to 250 mph, but when you account for human reaction speed and rotational timing, there seems to be a relation that I call rotational symmetry

    • @baseballbatbros

    • @Tevatron044
      @Tevatron044 Před rokem +1

      @@baseballbatbros yeah that's another factor. It's also a matter of what speeds you're use to. A slowpitch guy has a swing dedicated to 25mph loopers whereas those short swings you see in the pros are for faster pitching. I made a graph and found a peak in batting efficiency at roughly 75 to 80 mph. This is arguably the ideal pitch speed, but it only accounts for pitches from 60ft away. I haven't done a study for little league and probably won't have the time for it soon but it is a start

The setup i was using allowed just enough flex that the compression results were getting overtaken by the bending of the wood. It's very important to note that what most people call harder feeling wood is really just stiffer wood because the point at which the wood doesn't flex is roughlya inch wide. Everything else has a strong bending effect and unfortunately it shewed the data. I didn't figure it out until weeks after the experiment when i did a simulation of my test

Unfortunately tech then didn't tell how far it would go. Just start your swing (footwork) before it's even released. Playing stickball with my brothers in 1960's screwing around older brother would come up to maybe 15 feet and throw. Knowing where he was putting it I could still get wood on it and he had a pretty good arm. From NY we used little pink Spalding or Pensy Pinky balls and regular wooden bats sometimes cracked that we would tape up.

      proves that baseball players are real athletes. Not just anyone can move a 29-33oz rod of composite/metal/wood off their shoulder at the speed required to simultaneously make contact with a 9in ball traveling at 90-100mph. Not even to speak of the raw mental skills required to either pick up sequences or actively read spin on a ball to decipher whether its a fastball/curveball/slider/whatever. While it isn't as physically demanding in terms of raw strength or stamina, baseball is unique in that each plate appearance is the single most difficult thing you will ever encounter. Fielding, baserunning, taking routes on flyballs, etc; none of them pale in comparison to stepping up against a pitcher you have 0 control over and hitting a high-speed white flash at all, let alone well.

    2:57 Physics nerd here: the ball actually does not rise, as that would break the laws of physics. However, you have done so many reps that you expect a certain amount of vertical drop from the pitches. At this velocity and spin rate, however, the ball does not drop as much as your eyes and brain expect it to. You expect it to be in a certain place, it ends up being higher than that expectation, and your brain interprets this as the ball rising.

    So in MLB composite graphite, carbon fibre or titanium bats are allowed along with wood but not aluminum?

    A very good promo for location and changing speeds. These guys are obviously good hitters, but if you're throwing the same velocity in the same spot over and over, what do you think MLB hitters are going to do to the ball? I've seen 12 year olds time up 83mph from 50 feet on a consistent basis. Loved this video.

      the thing about velo on radars, is its out of the hand, not crossing the plate. little league speeds cant truly be converted to 60 feet 6 inches and thus increase speed, its just a shorter amount of space to react to... the 74 out of a 12 year olds hands is just hard to hit because you have less time to react. Lets be honest, you dont know any little leaguers at 12 years old throwing 83, this I promise you. Little league is also 46 feet.

      @@jaredrogers7863 For some reason I haven't been able to respond, but maybe the link I've included... but look up Dexter McLeon on Perfect Game... he's just one of several throwing over 80 at 12 years old. Teammate Brody Constantine.. Carter Moon hitting 79... that's just one TEAM. No one plays little league in the South, it's all Dizzy Dean rules, and it's 45' and 9U/10U and 50' at 11U/12U. It's a different world out there.

    this is way different than hitting a pitcher, there's no wind up or any visual clues for different positioning/timing.. he's rearing back to hit as the ball is still in the machine

    Most of the time Sim is so ahead of pitches in the 90's pulling them hard foul that it actually works perfect for 100+ heaters, he made them look easy while Will was stuck back side because his timing is perfect for the slower pitches
