- The Strymon NightSky is one of the most impressive pedals I've played yet, its capable of sounds that are unlike anything else I have. So why am I not sure about it?

Amazing video man! Really enjoyed that :)
Thanks man!!
I own a NightSky, and the one BIG thing you have to be aware of, you will need an external midi controller, it can hold 300 patches in 3 banks, BUT they have no librarian to keep track of this so you better think about it, also you can not access the next 8 patches from Strymond unless you can send controller, and PC messages, now you can create cool patches fast, but where do you store them? and how do you retrieve them? I reached out to Strymond and their words are you must buy an external control and figure out a patch librarian on your own, now that being said, I own a Morningstar MC8 and have begun to make and store my own patches, but at this price point you will have to invest in another controller to take advantage of this pedal...this is never mentioned in any review that I have seen yet, and its a BIG deal at this price point...Helix, Eventide H9 all have advanced editor/ librarian software to support their pedals, this does not...Rhett makes some nice points about this pedal, but like a lot of reviews, this is never mentioned
I use a Korg Wavestate midi'd to and from a Behringer Deepmind 12, also the connected MIDI out from my old Kawai K1R module which passes on the PC messages to the Nightsky. I set it up for MIDI Bank 0, since 128 memory patches is more than enough for my needs. Since the Wavestate only sends out PC from 1 - 64 from it's Set List, I can use the Behringer MIDI Bank that I'm working on, to select PC from 65 - 128 on the Kawai and the Nightsky. Moving patches on the Nightsky (to overwrite bad ones with better ones) can be tricky, since I have to send a MIDI PC message to the Nightsky from the Behringer. Since I can only send a PC message by selecting the next or previous patch on the Behringer, I use a MIDI filter pedal I've had for over 20 years, to temporarily shut off the PC button, move the Behringer to just before the patch # on the Nightsky I want to override, turn the Filter pedal MIDI back on, press + for the next patch, and the good Nightsky patch overrides the bad one. Strymon also has a Multiswitch add-on pedal, which apparently can be set to select all Midi banks 0, 1, and 2, wich, fortunately, I don't need. I believe it is intended for Guitarists who don't have or want to be othered with MIDI Controllers.
Most guitar players outside of a church don’t use midi
@@jessieplaysmusic8530 Um...what?! Most pro & aspiring pro guitar players use MIDI these days.
Are you just talking saving settings? Can’t you just take a picture of it and save it to a folder in your phone? I can’t imagine I’d need to remember anymore than a handful of settings for a set list.
The synth and slide paired together sound so so good, love the jam here
"I'm thinking of building a modular synth...'
He said before descending down the rabbit hole. I'm also a guitar player who decided to check out modular synthesizers, let me just say that it's very enjoyable but a hell of a learning curve.
My name is Eurorack, Destroyer of Wallets
And so I thiight playing guitar anr buying pedals would be pricy
Let me introduce myself, i am Eurorack
Not sure how everyone else feels about it, but when it comes to “reverb” pedals, I want it to achieve some crazy spacey, other worldly sounds. The more “out there” the better. And the experimentation with different sounds helps write parts that I eventually turn into a song. It’s really fun to write a song around a specific sound I found. This pedal is going to a lot of us experimenting like crazy. :)
Dude, you always have killer intros to start off the video! Keep it up!
Well, since the moment I saw it, I knew I wanted it. For the type of music and sounds I like to incorporate in my music, this pedal is perfect. Great video!
Rhett. I swear blind your demo tracks are the most creative and musically interesting on CZcams. I really hope you get a project going that makes music like that full time because it's stunning and I would listen to it for hours and hours
Thank you Rhett, your intro was super cool. I hope that you record it as a new song. For me this is a must have!!! This is absolutely amazing. It seems to be ideal for shoe gaze, Eno-esque, soundtrack, etc. All in all Strymon has created a fantastic new pedal that will help push your boundries.
Hi Rhett,
Came here from Rabea's video on the Nightsky because he mentioned being inspired by this one.
I saw the Nightsky's initial promotional videos from Strymon and, having always wanted a Strymon pedal and (loving reverb as I do), I ordered this the week it landed.
I haven't had a lot of time to dig in and devote to it, but it satisfies my itch for expansive, immersive reverb sounds, and I am happy to have a long learning curve ahead of me for the other sounds I'll be able to tap into as I play with it more.
Rabea is right, this is a great video - thank you for your honest, straightforward take on gear. I'll be subscribing and watching more.
Cheers.
Really digging the intro Rhett. Seeing a product inspire is, well, inspiring. Keep it up.
That intro is actually the best intro I’ve hear you do IMO. Reminded me of pg.lost which is one of my favourite bands! 🔥
I really dig this review, Rhett! I can’t tell you how helpful your reviews on gear have been for me. I’m very appreciative. And man, I loved seeing the pedal being used with the Moog Sub 37 to give a quick perspective on what it’s like if you pair with a synth. I also have a Sub 37 and a Minimoog Voyager that I can’t wait to pair this pedal with! I get mine in the next couple days.
It’s like having “Tangerine Dream” in a pedal.
Great if you’re into Prog Rock.
Thats the exact reasons I bought it! I love early TD and prog
Or if you're into horror movies from the 80's. :)
I thought more Pink Floyd watching a different demo of it.
@@nealeshaffer3140 Me, too! If you like guitar and sometimes ambient experimentation, check out an artist or project called Lanterna.
Or ambient
KILLED IT ON THAT INTRO!!!
I've keep coming back to listen
really cool to hear you play something a bit different, and it sounds absolutely fantastic!
That tune at the start was sooooo darn good! Love the channel!
holy shit, thanks for the plug dude.
Amazing intro man. It would be so cool for you to make these songs into full tracks. Love your stuff!
Love the synth playing!
Your intro is amazing. You should put that together as a complete track and release it. Wish I had a fraction of your talent.
Great reaction. You articulated well about what this pedal is. I fall into that "basic guitar player" mold, and definitely am a fan of Strymon pedals, and use the Flint and Deco (which does just about anything). I think some players get caught up in the desire for a new toy, and focus more on the amount of possible options. For me, I try to pair back, so less of my thought is on the equipment, and more on what I'm playing.
Well for me, I would have lost interest in playing guitar a long time ago, if it wasnt for the endless options of creating so many soundsscapes that dont sound like guitar but I can play with guitar.
For me crafting sound is also a gift to be mastered and I enjoy it a lot, eapecially making patches on the fly while recording songs.
I pretty mich never use presets eith my 7 strymons, I always dial in the sounds very fast and always end up with something new that inspires me to play guitar differently. I never lose the focus on playing, it even encourages me to play ehen it soumds so awesome.
Rhett, the intro was the best I've heard in a long time ... very nice!
That intro was really fresh and great sounding Rhett! love it!
Great review Rhett, and you nailed my initial reaction to this pedal. I thought it sounded spectacular on the Sub37, and now I’ve been wanting to try my H9 and Collider with mine to see if can get similar territory. You are spot on about the big build up on the track - it’s an effect that seems can get out of control if overused.
Personally I would not use it for guitar but it would be cool piece for my pedal steel rig.
Rhett the intro on this video was great! Thanks for showing off this pedal I've also been on the fence about buying it. I've gotten so used to my Keeley "Dark Side" pedal that I haven't had much need for extra reverb/delay. This pedal seems ideal for a looping artist that's for sure. The Strymon is nice nonetheless if you can utilize everything on it and have the extra $$
Thanks for a great informative video! 🎉
Great video, oh my goodness that Gretsch and the sounds coming out of it! Wow!
I clicked for the Night Sky but now I'm saving for the Moog! Killer stuff Rhett!
Im learning more through your vids than i do at school😅. Love the quality of vids you put out
I'm definitely interested in one to have around. It's definitely useful for something. I'd really like to hear it with more dry signal just to see how subtle things can get. I could see solo acts using it to have a bigger sound. I think strymon wants to continue to change the narrative and that's exactly what they did here.
3:02 - there it is. Seems like a very useable pedal for recording transitions. Like it.
Transitions and paired with synth gear. 👌😎
Informative review. You slide guitar at the beginning.. 🔥 Keep creating amazing textures 🤎
Works great for guitar. Goes above and beyond. It's all in there and is good for more than just one part of a song. It will do normal reverb and it does it well, it also does pretty nice things for those special moments. Most important for me is it has knobs no menus to scroll through. 128 presets that can be recalled through MIDI. I received mine a few days ago and already have it in my rig along with the Volante, they sound great together. Strymon's thinking on this pedal was out of the box.
I like your style, Rhett! In both your guitar-playing and your compositions, and that was another great intro :-) And I agree, that thing is the perfect tool for creating soundscapes. Hours of fun :-))
I bought it after seeing the first couple videos on it. I fully agree with you. It sounds amazing, but it really was made to mess with, and you can't do that whilst playing at the same time. I thought the same about studio use and stuff like film-scoring. I played around today, and it sounded pretty great.
I could watch a 10 hour intro from you. Awesome work of art.
Well said. I like my Eventide Space because it covers insane ambient effects, but also can do everyday spring, plate, halls.
Great video man! Keep it up
Thanks for the video, Rhett. I’ve wanted to start working on ambient music with bass guitar, and this seems like it would fit perfectly.
I think you nailed it at the end. It’s a soundscape pedal. Super cool and unique here and there.
I am primarily a synth player (I hack at the guitar) and I score films, and I recently picked up one of these pedals based on your video. I love it. I'm going to make a control surface for mine that interfaces with my modular synth and sends MIDI CCs to the Night Sky based on the various LFOs I have.
such a badass groove in the beginning there loved it
I think your views on this pedal are spot on. I like the night sky, but I have to look at practicality for me. It would be an awesome piece of gear to explore in my studio setting, but not for my regular song sets. So if I can find a decent used deal in the future I may get one. Really good video. 👍
Love the Subsequent 37 vibes! Keep on rockin'!
Hot damn, that little jam at the top was super good.
Great review! I like your honesty
Good review. Rhett. Your ambivalence towards this pedal made me decide to buynit in the future, but I will keep my TC Electronic Hall of Fame 2 for use in jam sessions. The Strymon is indeed more of use for studio meddling, doing ambient solo sessions and composing.
Moog sounds on this one 🔥🔥🔥
I think this one of your best tracks legend. I know you said it was difficult to make but I think really pushed you in a very interesting direction 😊✌️☀️
honest and informative video, well done \m/
man the intro music you make is incredible
Appreciate the honest review! Was thinking about getting one of these for my eurorack set up. Gonna have to use something like MI Yarns or Befaco CV Thing to make the most out of the NightSky's MIDI capabilities...
Yep really loved that beginning!
Loved that intro Rhett!
Well done, as I found this link over at TGP. I, too, play a Gretsch Black Falcon, and almost pulled the trigger on the NightSky. I play ambient, P&W and pedal steel guitar ala Daniel Lanois. Lots of cool sounds lurking inside, but as a gigging musician, I'm not sure I can justify adding this pedal to my gigging boards. Just a gut feeling .. once someone records a song with the NightSky and the song takes off, it will become the pedal of the month.
I've been messing around it with it a lot myself the past few days. I definitely designate it as mostly a studio tool or something I experiment around with after a few beers. That's when the fun begins!
Killer intro as always. You should definitely start considering publishing your intro "backstage songs". Keep up the good work man.
Rhett you make a very valid point. At what point have we. reached saturation? The point beyond which not much can be done to open new doors. Efforts yield some results, but not quite enough to set a new trend. If it lives up to then claims of the mfg. then the question is, HOW USEFUL are the settings in your music? A computer combined with effects. A synth? Can the effect be used to augment and improve your music?n Can it be used as a paintbrush and set the tone for completely new sounds In the end the test is can you make beautiful music with it or not?
The issue I have with some of these pedals is that there are 300 presets I would have absolutely no use for. I wish Strymon would develop a pedal where you could download the best patches from Big Sky, Mobius, Timeline etc. into one box.
Appreciate the honest transparent feedback.
Great vid. I completely agree. I’m glad that companies are doing this kind of specialized stuff, but I can’t help being on the fence about this one. The NightSky (and others like Zoia etc) seem almost like the apex of this pedal craze we’ve all been in for years where now it almost seems companies are making products for gearpage users and ambient CZcams guitarists more than typical working musicians. I’m not knocking it..I love both of those things, and obviously these are the people who buy them. My El Cap/Flint combo will never leave my board, but I even feel like I see more Timelines and Big Sky’s on Instagram than out in the real world. Either way it’s a crazy time to be a guitarist!
Badass video Rhett, lol you should do one on how to get those dope drum sounds on Logic
Rhett ‚The Edge‘ Shull 😉. Cool Intro, man 🤘. But this thing has a lot of the Boss Slicer (the Strymon can do a lot more) that was always under the radar.
New guitar shapes!! We need something like that these days for sure !!!
That opening mix was massive! Great review on this. I'm only afraid I may need a PHD to operate it. It's a wicked cool box! Yes, your ears could possibly overdose on this pedal, but savage when used in the right context.
This whole video sounds awesome!
Great intro, Rhett!! You have to make that to a full song/track... if it isn't already?
Totally this
Yeah he KILLED it on the intro!!!!
Absolutely I would love to hear 10 mins of that soo much. I just love this pink floydty use of a slide. There are waaaay too less songs in that style in the world!!!
EDIT: if somebody knows songs that are like that please drop me a line. 😉
Yes, this needs to be a 10 minute long full song. It's kinda killing me that you faded it off as it went that syncopated section.
Please
As allways your style and your videos area really useful to understand gears. bravo
Nice vid man. Everything you said is true. It´s a really "perticular" pedal. If you are into ambient scene and like to tweak, guitar or synth, don´t hesitate.
Had a long thought should I insvest in this or not, now, no regrets. This pedals is just amazing.
Wonder if this giant wave of stereo spatial modulation effects, plugins, pedals will somehow swing the pendulum the other way: maybe the next unique sound is not more modulation on your compressed stereo spread, but some amazing musician playing mono dry cutting through a band sounding fresh and weird and new compared to now commonplace bedroom producer ambient sound design lush Splice loopers. Maybe the music in the upside down isn’t more dream stuff but more real stuff. Or maybe we are in the upside down. Still, though, love you Strymon.
Dude there isntons of people out there doing what you just suggested, and I absolutely love it when they do.
But the nightsky sounds insane if used right. Go and watch Perry Franks sound examples on the nightsky. This thing has some incredibly amazing sounds in it, it is more than just a pedal. You can create the most beautiful synthlike soundscapes with them, also by sending vst through them. Absolutely beautiful
Loved the vid, very honest.I would defo buy that pedal.
I must state....your audio recording is exceptionally good :]
Good description and I agree... if you write your own songs and want to create some lush backgrounds, or Film score type stuff, perfect, but for the everyday guitarist I don't see much use for this. I have a Timeline and Big Sky and putting those two together is fun enough for me :-)
I like what you call "niche effect", I mean, it's cool you talk about it. You're certainly absolutely right about this very specific pedal use target. Your opinion is precious. Thanx for this video
Music from the hearts of space... Like you say experimental players, and those in the ambient realm, are going to love that pedal
Cyber attack dude is genius!!! His Moog ring mod video of old on his old channel was the best ring modulation video ever as well. Love his new channel.
Thanks for the honest review pal.
Awesome Rhett!
Like your objective ness in this video Rhett, yes you can get some amazing soundscapes and actually use well when recording film/tv soundtracks with lots of ambience and creative new ideas, as you say not just for guitarists but a host of other instruments which is great, but for me it’s a very expensive pedal that I can’t see me using lots in my guitar band set so although it would be great to have one I couldn’t justify spending that amount on something I would rarely be able to use. Great video 👍
Thanks for not shying away from your real opinion or perspective.
Very well put. I still want one.
I think you are exactly correct. This pedal seems more useful in a studio for composition than it would be for an active cover band.
I also agree that in this case the pedal isn't better or worse than other pedals. It's just different... and unique. I like not only that Strymon makes different pedals that can be used for different instruments, but also how it can make pedals for the same instrument that do different things. I love these type pedals force us artists to think more creatively and more outside the box.
Thanks Rhett ⚓️
Thanks for the great review, Rhett! I was thinking of buying one of these, but I'm definitely a basic-sounds kind of player, and this would have been very impractical for me.
That arpeggio effect with the Moog was super cool. I can think of a bunch of stuff I'd use it for, but the main guy I'm recording with once the current situation clears up is all about having a couple of weird pedals that make a tonne of different sounds alongside the standard fare items, and I'm all about using synths alongside guitars. Strymon, is it my birthday?
This pedal will be BIG with the experimental music community. It will be used with many instruments, not just guitar. Electronic producers will love it. Same as soundtrack composers. Personally I'm excited.
Love the slide melody!
I feel like everyone got convinced by this video not to buy it but it convinced me to buy it 😂
Great review. thanks. Agree that this is more of a studio unit sitting
beside the desk (for me as a guitarist / producer) but not really a pedalboard thing . . . certainly cool for soundtrack work on guitar / synth / samplers etc. Would be a handy plug-in!
Great review, super fair glance at the Eno box
Very cool opening composition
Holy smokes.. Amazing intro 💜
The minute I heard it I thought “that’s cool but I have no use for it practically” it’s cool but for the price tag I could get a lot of other more useful things 🤷♂️
No more Mr. Night Sky
I have it I like it :-)
as a film composer - definitely appeals to me. However I could probably achieve a lot of the sounds in a synth by assigning LFOs to parameters of the reverb, motion sequencing the reverb, etc. It seems less an essential for me, it's more a potential luxury extra.
I was thinking exactly the same. It seems like this pedal is cool for a guitar players, who would like to add more synthy options because of pitching mods and etc. Players who already own plenty of synths with mod/env/filter options already have been prepared to enter in the matrix. It's gonna be a tough collab between this nightsky pedal chained with the recently released Polybrute by Arturia.
Now I'm eager to see what your fellow musician and friend Philip Conrad will come up with his NightSky!
Great, honest review.
That thing sounds amazing!
Seems like it would be a great addition in a worship bands setting. Btw...loved that intro🔥🎸
I can’t wait to get one... the more typical sounds would work well in lieu of my BigSky and the more experimental sounds will open up a lot of sonic options when writing!
