MMORPGs have had some incredible stories over the years, but there are few with as lasting an impact as the Falador Massacre and the Shard of the Herald in Runescape and Asheron's Call respectively
But that might make people think only older games have stories worth telling, enter New World with an interesting story of its own to tell.

When Josh Strife Hayes criticized New World's bugs at launch, including the chat bug, players were still in the honeymoon stage of the game, and were in denial about its problems. Many people told JSH that he shouldn't criticize New World, unless he could build a better MMO. JSH replied with "I don't need to know how to build a plane to know that the wings shouldn't fall off."
I'd just started making content when new world came out and I was definitely scared go be critical. I don't even want to go back and look at my old new world review...
@@Redbeardflynn Yeah, when New World first came out, people got hate for saying anything negative about it. Now some people get hate for saying anything positive about it.
Sounds about right! Pretty sure I've gotten both comments on it. I keep *trying* to like it and it has some great parts, sound design and music will always be top for me but there's just something...missing. I'm gonna re-review it later this year I think to try and find out what it is that missing for me.@@Sir_Lagg_A_Lot
@@Sir_Lagg_A_Lot this just shows a lot of people follow the crowd. If your opinion falls outside of what the crowd thinks, they come at you with pitchforks. It's an age old problem and one of the worst parts of Human nature.
In case you are wondering, I checked. The Falador Memorial doesn't seem to be in OSRS, but I did find it in Runescape 3.
The memorial in RuneScape is only RS3, Oldschool RuneScape is a copy of the game from 2007, so it actually has a different timeline.

Similar to Asherons Call, the Matrix Online also had live action events, which were done by devs, might be worth checking out for your next mmos story time. Spoiler alert,

Also spread the word that WB Games is pivoting their focus to live service games now, and WB's 'Head of Games' specifically stated they're trying to "develop a game around, for example, a Hogwards Legacy or Harry Potter (sic: ASHERON!!), that a live-service where people can live and work and build and play in that world in an ongoing basis", so a new Asheron's Call might very well be on the horizon! That's a real quote from JB Perrette, WB Games' "Head of Games" that he stated just a few days ago!!
Haha I had *no* idea what I was doing in Asheron's call. I just wanted to do it justice by getting some higher resolution B-roll and trying not to die.
I loved Asheron's Call. Harvestgain for the win! I loved the Shadow Wars and my Pre-Patch Amuli armor.
Never got to play (outside of the terrible bit of B-roll attempt here) but I've always heard really good things.
Fortnite has done a lot of memorials for players who found creative ways to play, most often dying in an unusual way they didn't expect. I know the map changes every so often so the memorials go with it but I still appreciate the detail to the communities antics.
I thought for sure one of your stories would be the in-game funeral massacre in WoW classic where a person died IRL that played on a PVP server and their guild held an "open" and advertised in-game funeral as a nice gesture for all on the server to come pay their respects but they did it in a contested zone...so an opposing faction guild showed up and slaughtered them all in their RP gear. czcams.com/video/MGHQT3bgLCc/video.html
I've been in Second Life since 2008, and there have been MANY epic dev fails and lots and lots of incredibly smart and creative players. Early on, we have better computers than the LL people did. Can't wait to see it!
I liked the book and I got it on amazon for 15 bucs #worth it. I loved Asheron's call so much.

Dude, you wrote a book. However it was received you are one of the vasnishingly small % of people who got their shit together and actually did it. That in itself is admirable.

These things can't happen anymore in games today. Obviously ignoring the New World sausage-fest and talking about the other two.. Especially a dev message talking about rewards for challenging the idea of what 'can't be done' in an online game. Those guys aren't allowed to make games anymore, the suits make the games now. All of the fun has been optimized out in return for maximum profits. Ask any zoomer MMO player who wasn't around for UO, original EQ, AC, etc, ask them how good the GM events are in their chosen game and on their specific server. Most of them won't even have any idea what you're talking about, and certainly won't have any good memories of any such thing ever happening. That sort of fun custom world-building content such as server-wide events requires man-hours, actually paying your employees to play a game, utter nonsense. You could just spend that time creating more microtransactions guess which one pays better.
So in the thistle down defense, the majority of the players on a server chose the defense option, so the devs schemed and cheated to get the desired outcome? Wonder how long it took for that server to become a ghost town after that.
What a piece of shit New World turned out to be.
