- Het geweldige Gavioli kermisorgel De Troubadour, De Troubadour is wat mij betreft de allermooiste Gavioli op de hele wereld op De Schelm na dan natuurlijk, De foto's zijn gemaakt door mijn vader begin jaren tachtig tijdens een door de KDV georganiseerde reis naar Belgie om aldaar Decap en A.Prinsen te bezoeken, mijn vader en ik hebben die dag het erg naar ons zin gehad en ik denk nog vaak terug aan de dag dat ik dit orgel voor het eerst zag. GB The magnificent Gavioli fairground organ The Troubadour, The Troubadour is in my opinion the most beautiful Gavioli fairground organ in the world, the photos were taken by my father in the early eighties during a trip organized by the KDV to Belgium to visit Decap and A.Prinsen, my father and I have had a very nice day and I often think back to the day when I saw this organ for the first time.

This is so awesome. I grew up in a carnival midway and as a little boy I would ride the Merry go round all evening long. My favorite was a pink pig. Some nights I would wind the leather bridal hooked to the pig and then to myself and literally fall asleep on it. This type of music would be playing all the while the ride was running. I was four or five years of age at the time. I am now seventy. This sound has sure taken me back and filled my mind with visions from those days and so much helped me remember as I am writing a book from those days. So appreciated. Thank You.

I don't know why, but these machines just make me so god damn happy whenever I hear them at a Steam rally and what have you.

Like Mr. Chase, I, too, traveled with carnivals for many yrs. and I'm now 78 and listening to this marvelous organ play, puts me right back out there on the midway. Back then, super duper rides weren't the main attraction. Sideshows and Grind shows of every kind and description, were the norm....I miss those days!
They should play this music for people that suffer from depression! How can you dislike this!

Was THRILLED to find this! LOVE the melodies AND the SOUND of the organ! Hard to believe all that music is produced by ONE instrument! WONDERFUL! What a fabulous invention ~ too bad instruments like this are so seldom heard! It's like the 'merry-go-rounds' of my childhood! I'd ride & ride just to hear the music & when I could ride no longer, I'd just stand & listen!
Thank you for the fantastic comment, i'm glad you like the video, i have been fascinated by all types of mechanical organs since the age of five, fair ground organs being my favorite, i've always wanted to own one but it never was ment to be i guess, instead of owning one i started a record collection, about 60 records, which i had collected over the years, almost all records are about 30 to 40 years old now and are too far gone (damaged) to listen to, a member from my youtube channel very kindly offered me a perfect mp3 copy of the record, of course i was extremely happy and wanted it to share it with the world, the record and some pictures my dad made back in the early 80's gave me the idea to make the video.

The first time i ever saw one was in a amusement park, it was like magic, hours seemed to be turned into minutes, every now and than i think back about that day somehow hoping to hear the bell for the next ride.
You too? As a kid at the amusement park by the New Hampshire beach, I had to be dragged away from the merry-go-round standing there listening to the grand fair organ long after I had run out of money to ride the horses.
I have been playing this in the background whilst writing a children's short story set in an old fashioned fairground. So helpful and inspiring, thank you!

I remember : that was my favourite music when I was a child.
Me also it was a magical rich-full sound that you could feel if you were close enough it made your body vibrate (almost!") A happy feeling that lasted all day, especially if it was while riding the Merry-go-round‼️😄👍😁
These were well past my time but I really wish they were still used at fairs and other events; the sound this produces is incredible and it can get very catchy given the right tune.

I'm a retired Carny, too and I NEVER get tired of hearing the music of these magnificent band organs play. Unfortunately, today all you ever hear on the midway is horrible rock music ( I wouldn't classify it as music). Anyway, thanks for posting this, Wayne.

Kind of got hooked on this Marvelous Music, when I was bought a music tape, many Years ago,and I still haven't lost my appetite for this fantastic, original music, long may it last,and as long as other enthusiast's still listen,then, surely it will go on for tomorrow's generation.

Thank you very much for your comment, unfortunately i'm not the owner, i used a record i bought 34 years ago, i optimized the sound quality and converted it in mp3 format, i also used some pictures of the organ made in the early 80's to create the video.
This organ just takes me so far away to that land of dreams & hope & love. ~ Geez ! ~ Do I sound like a hopeless romantic ?? ~ This Gavioli is absolutely charming & mesmerizing ! ~ I would love to be in a room with this organ & it's music. ~ Wouldn't re-appear for a year !! ~ Love Chirirbiribim ! Thank you for posting this. I have fond memories of visiting Circus World in Baraboo Wisconsin on a family vacation as a child and listening to the America Steam Calliope. The Troubadour has a much more pleasing sound, great sound quality of the video, thanks again

So THATS it! I knew I heard it somewhere when I was very young. I can't remember where, might have been an old cartoon, might have been the old guys down at the record shop, might have been an organ at the fourth of July parade in Michigan. But I remembered it from somewhere!

I have many CD's of mechanical instruments, mainly band organs and carousel instruments. My favorite before hearing the Troubadour was a 79 key Richter. No longer. Great treatment of the music of this instrument !!
plasticman acrylic I agree, it's amazing to me how much influence music arrangements have in making a band organ in to what i like to call a super organ, in my opinion music arrangements can make or break the performance, one of the best arrangers of this type of music was Carl Frei, arranging was just one of the many things he did, he also composed music and built organs with the unmistakable Carl Frei sound, i think his work is unsurpassed, and i am extremely grateful for all he has given us, even to this day his work brings joy to people all over the world.
This was the best 45 minutes of my life. Thank You.

I used to work at Marshall Tractors in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire; way back in the early 80's Used to get a history from none other than Henry Marshall one of the relatives of the original Marshall family.I can tell you it was incredible just to have it from a pioneering stalwart. Marshall's is long gone but the memories remain.

Many thanks Geert for this recording. When I was a boy I used to listen in to Radio Hilversum every night for an hour of fantastic draaiorgel music and when I was older I went to Amsterdam, Gouda, Alkmaar, Volendam and listened to every street organ I could, I was mesmerised by the music and really loved the old hand cranked organs manually wound with a big wheel, I couldn't get enough of it. Of course these days most have been converted and refurbished to work with electric motors. I do also remember the old steam driven Carousels, magnificent. I still have my original 1960's LP's before CDs came out. A pity this recording isn't a video but great music anyway.
You are very welcome, i couldn't afford a video camera back than in 1981 they were very expensive, at the time i was only 16 years old so i did the next best thing, i bought the Lp, much later i got internet and decided to upload it, in 2012 i got a videocamera and started to film for my youtube channel, every year once a year in September i go to Amsterdam to shoot a video,usually there are about 10 to 15 organs there that day its just like when i was a young man.

This has got to be a very important piece of history this 87 key Gavioli is! Probably one of the best sounding I heard! The other best one is White's Mammoth Gavioli! Good to hear this organ was saved!
the march at 15:08 is my favorite.
Heard many carousels over the years and most were just recorded songs. There is no comparison to the old organs and most have their own distinct sound.

I was in my late forties when I decided to Pluck up Courage to step onto the merry Go Round . I always thought it was a Child's Ride'. But on stepping onto the Revolving Platform and then Stepping my foot into the Stirrup and striding over the Wooden Horses Back. I still felt an idiot sitting on the Saddle; I'd notice the Man at the Steam Engine Pull the Brake Handle and then Pull another lever where suddenly the Merry go Round would Set off wit a Jolt and then I'd sort of Jolt back and thought that I would fall backwards and so I quickly Held tight onto the Metal stay ; Then as the Merry Go Round Began to Rotate the Horse began to Raise up and then Down. I'd Look upwards and see the Crank angle Go up and down I still Was thinking what an Idiot I was sitting astride a wooden Horse ? But then as the Merry go Round Rotated a few Turns I Began to Enjoy the Thrill. This Merry go Round was Steam Powered and even the Flutes that Piped out the Music I could see Steam coming out of the Pipes and the Base drums Banging releasing the steam as the Bellows went in and out; I was one of the Lucky Ones that was allowed to Get into the Back of the Machine and watch the Card with its Stamped out Cords slide across the Mechanism that blew the Steam to the Various Pipes and Flutes; and to think such a Machine was invented well over 100 Years ago . Not as though there were any on this Merry Go Round! In the Good old Days . There were some Paraffin Lamps that were shaped like Aladdin's Lamp where a Wick like that of a thick Candles wick: There were Various Chemicals that was Placed within the Paraffin Lamps; Each Lamp would have its own Different colour of Blues Yellows and Greens; and at Night time these Lamps would Shine Brightly and Letting off Smoke and fumes from off the Lit lamps' Today Many of the Merry Go Rounds run off Electricity and Compressed air. Some are Powered by the Old Steam Engines that Produce Electricity with their Generator Finally May I Say thank you for your trouble in Putting Life Back into an old Bugger of 73

I used to ride the great Carousel merry-go-round at Salisbury Beach, N.H. and choose to ride a gilded horse because it was beautiful and because it was so near the carousel organ. So close I could got the full blast of its pipes and hear the wheezing of the air bellows huffing away. "Progress" has wiped that all out. A faddish nation throws its best away because something "new" has come along.

I used to go to fairs or steam fairs, I would usually find this in it, or a merry go round which kind of plays music like this 😁
yeah that's what i did when i was young, even back then it wasn't easy to find one at the fairground, but luckily they can be found on the internet, usually they can be found in big entertainment parks and also in private collections, in the Netherlands that's were i live,there are quite a lot of private collections, some of them can be visited ,it's like being teleported back in to time, somehow when one starts playing time goes in fast forward, hours seem to turn in to minutes and i always run out of time way to fast.
What a magnificent instrument...I am reminded of a one of a kind Band Organ that played at Euclid Beach Park in Cleveland Ohio. I believe it was made in Paris . I regret I do not know the name of it but it was very large and played at the roller rink for many years ...Thank you for this beautiful music !!
I think everyone interested in mechanical instruments will come across their favorite band organ at certain point in time, in my case it's a little more complicated, since there are so many types of organs like for instance dance organs fairground organs and so on, i pick a favorite organ of each type and brand, my favorite type is fairground organ and if i had to choose between all of them my favorite brand would be Ruth & sohn, the Gavioli fairground organ in this video is absolutely my favorite For the Gavioli brand, listening to it always puts a smile on my face.

+Rich Palmieri - I saw Euclid's Carousel as well as its band organ in 2017. It's now in a museum in Cleveland!
And, the band organ was made by North Tonawanda Musical Instrument Works. I'm not sure what model of NT it is, but it definitely sounds beautiful!
Hi, the Euclid Beach roller rink had a giant 110-key Gavioli organ, which is apparently the last totally original 110-key Gavioli left (there is also a remodeled one with still more-or-less the same magnificent voicing, in the Thursford Collection in Norfolk, UK, but which had its scale changed to 98-key in the 1920s or so, so it no longer plays all the notes nor is fully chromatic any longer, but still is wonderful in its way). The Euclid Beach organ is currently in a private collection in Illinois. There are some recordings of it on CZcams if you look for "110-key Gavioli" the previous owner (before the current owner) was Dr. Robert Miller of Connecticut, who bought the Gavioli from the park when it closed in the 1960s, and played it in his large building there (I believe), where the LPs were recorded, before selling it to the current owner some decades ago.
My teacher Mrs Tomas uses this music and I found it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the early days they were steam powered, these days they are usually powered by a electrical motor,sometimes a blower, blowing air in directly (i don't know exactly how it works), there are events were steam engines and fairground organs work together, i know of only one event were this is the case it is somewhere in England thats all i know about it, try searching on you tube there are many many videos of fairground organs usually filmed at events, so that steam event i was talking about should be among them, you can also try searching online for museums or private collections of mechanical instruments there you usually get a basic explanation about the history of mechanical instruments and how they work, trust me you will be amazed it's fascinating.

I England there is a travelling steam fai called Carers. This could e what you are referring o. I have voted this fair many times just to hear the steam organ
Most original fair organs have a large flywheel with a handle which allowed you to hand-crank the organ, as this was before the days where electric motors were commonplace, and very often using hand power was the only option. If you wanted to run them off a steam engine, you would have a large belt which would go round the flywheel on the steam engine and the flywheel on the organ, and thus you could use the steam engine's power to run the organ. The circular motion of the flywheel on the organ is translated into lateral motion which would be used to run the bellows, which would in turn blow air into the air reservoir. Of course nowadays an electric motor is generally used instead which would do literally the same job as the steam engine, except of course much much smaller. As you mentioned, some are also adapted to use a blower, which simply bypasses the need for the flywheel and the bellows and simply blows air directly into the air reservoir, which is what regulates the air pressure and is where the air is fed from to the pipes.
there are two I know of the great Dorset Steam Rally and the Astle park Rally in Northenr England

The recording ist stunning and the Troubadour is a masterpiece of Gavioli. I saw it about 10 years ago in Switzerland at an auction. I hope since that some restauration is done because it has sounded not so good anymore at this time. What is nearly unique is that the pipes arragements seems original. It sounds like an original Gavioli.
