First, this is awesome!
Second, is this the only video available for this beautiful piece of history?
Third, provided you could get the rights, etc, Simply Red's Fairground would be apt. ;)
Hard to believe that this would have been a fairground/carnival attraction in its own right a century ago.
Show it to kids today and they probably wouldn't fully appreciate it. But then again, they might on here.
You Sir, are an excellent custodian of this awesome piece of history.
Mac/au though I can't speak for everyone my age (16), I'm in love with this thing, I swear if I had this in my house I'd break the thing from using it so much!
I'd be the same. But then again, you would have to be extremely resourceful with that organ - not as if you could buy spare parts for it >.<
I do admit to being stereotypical in the previous comment. I'm sure if I had a big enough sample size, I would more than likely be surprised at the results. I mean, the fact this video has nearly 4M views means something.
can you try inputing "Gold Saucer" from Final Fantasy VII on this thing?
or better yet...the Final fantasy prologue theme?

this device was 70 years old when bohemian rhapsody was released, and we're watching this 45 years after that. purely in terms of timeline, this like someone in 2060 playing despacito on one of the first synthesizers of the 1950's...
God I hope Despacito isn’t the Bohemian Rhapsody of our generation 😂😂😂
No it will be like someone playing Bohemian Rhapsody in 2060 lol. Despacito is dead now, it won't have remotely the same impact as Bohemian Rhapsody, isn't nearly as good, and it's a shame on youtube it has a few billion more views even though I'm pretty sure it's not as well known (then again, there's several different videos of Bohemian Rhapsody).
Old town road would be better
Chris Hamilton they weren’t likening despacito to bohemian rhapsody’s excellence. They were purely referencing the timeline, so they used a popular song that was created around this time. Obviously despacito isn’t as absolutely amazing as bohemian rhapsody
This was uploaded in 2014 so its 39 years
The fact that someone took the time to actually produce the music in the format the organ can read is pretty astonishing and praiseworthy. That was fantastic!
Yes fantastic. I absolutely love it!! ❤

What’s even cooler is when you realize this organ is basically a 100+ year old analogue binary computer. You put a file in and it runs a program based upon which places have a hole (1) or no hole (0).
Nextralife Wouldn't that still be digital? -The reading part? The playing is on the analog side.
Lou Fazio it would still be analogue, as it involves moving parts (if I remember correctly)
Pheonix Arising My bad. Binary is what I was thinking.
Nextralife it is not a computer because you can't simulate a turing machine on it. It is quite impressive though.
Jesus Adfasd: This organ is a textbook example of a deterministic Turing machine. A DTM reads a symbol off of a program tape and writes a corresponding symbol based upon what it has read. In a DTM, each read symbol X will have a single write symbol output Y.
Similarly, this organ reads unique notes off of a program written onto a long sheet of paper as either a hole (1) or no hole (0). Based upon the finite number of unique combinations of 1 and 0, the organ is theoretically capable of being scaled to produce an equally finite number of unique output signals as musical notes. Each unique combination of 1 and 0 “read” from the sheet can be “written” as a unique musical note or chord. Given input signal X, the organ will always output note Y and, barring mechanical failure of the organ or the music sheet, will never output random notes for a given, established read symbol.
Now, what this machine is not that a modern electronic computer is, is a universal Turing machine. A UTM can simulate any other given Turing machine, be they DTM or NTM, and thus theoretically solve any mathematical problem. This organ, even with its binary language, could be made into a UTM. It would need 15 different modes however, rather than this organ’s single mode. In fact, there are real world examples of them right here on CZcams. Just search “mechanical Turing machine”.
Well, Freddie did ask to never make his legacy boring and this certainly is the opposite of boring! This is so cool!

@@667SatansNeighbor F Yeah he would! Now if we can just get it to interact with the crowd while wearing a yellow jacket!
I just came in here to say the same, OMGods he would have squealed with delight!
The most mindblowing thing I see is how the 100-year old note reader seems to have no problems with all those paper folds.
While my printer gets stuck on the smallest paper fold; and loves creating more paper folds on its own from time to time.
This really shows the whole "they don't make 'em like they used to" mindset at it's finest.
My printer is just as bad. A shame.
@Amy Zee Like the way your brain works. Great comment! 🤣🤣
While the reply is funny, I believe the usual problem is papers sticking together; since all the paper here is attached, very easy to separate.
And yes, paper jams have no right to happen; it should be an easy solution.
This instrument was clearly maintained in a very good condition and fixed whenever something broke down and also the cost of this instrument and your printer can't even be compared. The printer was made from cheap materials and is in general cheap unlike this instrument
Modern printers are actually designed to fail or seem crummy or outdated. Its because the technology has been perfected enough it can't be improved much further, and one printer can last decades. Because of this printer companies need to keep afloat some how so most stop making cartridges or intentionally design the printer to die when the warranty expires. Oddly this has led people to buy printers from the 80s, 90s, 2000s.

For the ones who are curious!:
This is a 81 key Marenghi dance organ. Dance organs were used in the beggining of the XX Century in dance halls, where people would pay for the organ to play a song to dance (they usually were short songs so people would pay more lol).
Dance organs are different from fairground organs and band organs, but they are all mechanical organs. Dance organs are usually less loud and way bigger, while fairground organs and band organs (Like the one you see in carousels) are designed to be very loud, so they can mask the sound of the machinery and people voices.
Some mechanical organs play with music books (like the one you saw at the beggining of the video), others play with rolls (similar to pianollas) and others have been addapted in modern times to play MIDI from a computer or cellphone!
Besides Marenghi, other manufacturers of mechanical organs are:
-Gavioli, Wurlitzer, Artizan, Hooghuys, Frati, Debrüder, DECAP, Verbeek and many more ^^
So they tried to destroy the USS Enterprise And made these!?! Odd.
I actually live near an old amusement park with a historic carousel complete with its fully operational Wurlitzer from when the park first opened around the turn of the century
A friend of my parents had a three tiered keyboard Werlitzer in his living room. It was fully working. Hearing Tocatta In Fuge on it rocked. Much like this. Wonderful rendition. Had me singing all the way through.
Only after a few years the organ left the band and started its solo life

The composer portraits along the top are: Wagner, Liszt, Mozart, Beethoven, Peter Benoit, and Jan Blockx. The last two were important Flemish composers of the late 19th cent. Their inclusion is curious, however, not because of their relative obscurity, but because the organ is of Parisian origin.

I am a keyboard player and have recorded music, so I have an understanding of MIDI devices. It fascinates me that there were automated pianos and organs long before computers and MIDI existed. This does make the song sound like it's being played at a fairground.
@jeopardy60611 The (visual) similarity with the socalled "pianoroll" in a MIDI music program (Logic Pro X for instance) is clear...
I understand what you're thinking, but you can hear the resonance & natural reverberation of a tall ceiling and large echo-y room.
@@TonBil1 Yeah, that software is replicating the image of the piano roll to allow you to visualize the music and edit it easily. It looks like there is a wheel on the back that may have been used to feed the roll through manually, but the organ was probably retrofitted later on with an electric motor. I have seen other videos where the roll had to be fed through manually by turning the wheel.

This is indeed awesome.....but now imagine it played on one of those big organs that you find in old cathedrals, the ones with all the tall pipes running into the roof. THAT would take awesome to an awesomely epic level!! :-)
Johan Combrinck I know but this is a fairground organ
Because, they weren't made in China
The person who created the music scroll is a genius with one of the rarest skills in the world. Thank you, sir or madam.
If Freddie was an instrument....he would be this . Fabulous !
Who else can still hear the lyrics?
Please explain why I can still hear them
EVERYBODY could hear them cause I couldn't just have them in my head and NOT sing along!! 😂
Yes strange that
Me
CB2C It might be an auditory illusion? I’m not sure if the link will work but hearing the lyrics made me think of this video. czcams.com/video/ZY6h3pKqYI0/video.html
1916's Midi.
Thought the very same ^^

Apollo Smile to be fair you couldn't download the 1916 midi on the go. And 1916 midi only worked on the organ that you arranged it on, nowadays midi is universal. So yeah, it was kind of broken.

Apollo Smile are you stupid or something?

Well done on the arrangement and programming! This is really good!!
This is just the most coolest thing! Thankyou for posting!!
Imagin someone listening to this in 1905. Incredible. It sounds incredible!
I wanna go back it time and give them that paper with the song on it and be like " here ya go. enjoy"
To be honest, they would think all future music is shit
DragonCorn Yeah true. They havent been in our generation. Their ears will probably explode from skrillex
+Logan Browne I'm from this generation and my ears still explode from Skrillex. -_-
Scotty Yeah same lol
Freddie Mercury:
“You can do whatever you want with my image, my music: remix it, re-release it, whatever, just never make me boring.”

He probably would have bought it before even listening to it lol
I bet Freddy never thought when he was writing this song, years after his death, people would be playing it, on an organ that was crafted before his birth.

@@meepmop Are you saying, the dude with the mustache from Queen wasn't killing kids in their dreams with his burned face and claw-hand?
He did! He was going to be a "legend" and he certainly has achieved that status!!
I remember another video of a huge church organ that had been refurbished and had a midi input that the master organist was aware of but not it's potential. The guest had a midi file of Bohemian Rhapsody and they played it. It was magnificent. Freddy Mercury would have been proud.
