Get better results: Use Paper Towels rather than a Roller to Paint your Car with Rustoleum

  • i watched many of the CZcams videos about using Rustoleum with a roller to paint your car. its cheap and it works but it really doesn't look that good and unless you spend a lot of time sanding and polishing. i was not getting the results i was looking for and then i found a way that took a whole lot less effort and gave me the results i hoped for.

    Most people who do this are looking for a cheap EASY way to paint the car. 20 coats with sanding in between does not appear to be EASY. From what I see on the internet rolling alone seems to be a bad idea so your right about that. Some people roll and tip (tipping with a special brush) to get rid of bubbles and orange peel (with one coat). That might make some sense. Or just one coat brush and tip (with special tipping brush).

    If you are getting roller edge marks you should focus on learning to use a roller. Going on a smooth surface with gloss is not like painting a house.
    A power saw does not cut a straight line, the operator does.

    Use a decent roller, a fine 5mm nap roller. Roll it on and use a tipping brush to lay it off, job done 😊

    Good video. It was very informative. I will have to give it a try. You went over some very useful tips like keeping the paint in a re-seal-able bag. That will certainly help to keep the ratios from skewing due to evaporating thinner. I hope to give this method a try sometime when the weather improves. I'll try to post my results. Thanks for taking the time to make the video and sharing.

      Thanks. i am about to make another video. The car is looking so good now. i sanded more of the orange peel off that was left from the roller and added a few more coats of paint with the paper towels. i still need to finish the hatchback and top of the car.
      Let me know how it goes. if you do have some dents, it really makes a difference if you fix them, especially once your paint job starts looking good. i started to see dents i didn't even know i had. The roller method covers these up, but the better the finish, the worse the dents look. Bondo is not that hard to work with and it is easy to fix if you mess up. Some dents i had took 3 applications. Sometimes i would be close to finishing a panel, the paint finish would start to look really good and the dent would still show. So i would sand it down to get the surface smoother or at times would have to add some more bondo. i ended up having about 10 dents that i repaired but it makes all the difference in the world in the final appearance of the car. Now i can't even see where most of the dents were and the ones i can i have to really be looking for them. Thanks again

    I don't get all the thumbs down; people knew what to expect. I'll admit that the thought of using a paper towel to paint anything makes my fingers ache, but if it works for you, it might work for others. I'd be inclined to use a roller for the early coats and maybe something with more of a smoothing effect on the upper ones, perhaps a big foam brush. I've smoothed out orange-peeled walls by brushing on paint and using a plastic joint knife to squeegee it; the end result was that mirror finish you get with fresh plaster. I wonder if a similar method would work on a car, followed up with a good wet sanding. Anyway, thanks for sharing this.

    I want to thank you for coming up with this idea. I have watched many videos on rolling and brushing. I have tried them also, and yes, lots of sanding. I have a 63 Mercury Comet that has a 20 year old Earl Shieb job. Anyway, I tried my first pass today and so far I am very happy with the finish compared to roller or brush. What I did was take a few sheets of paper towels and folded them in half (about 6 inches) and rolled them up. Then got it soaked, rinsed a little and pulled it across in even sections. My question is, do you wait for the paint to be dry and not tacky for the addition coats? Also, I am not sure if I like the idea to keep the left over in a zip lock. I tried that and it seemed that after a few hours, the mix got thicker. I used 1 part paint, 1 part thinner and 1/2 part Penetrol (for helping with streaks) .

    There is wisdom in this video especially when considered with a historical perspective of early automotive finishes, and even further back to pre 1800's & 1900's coach and furniture finishing. I think the success of his techique is also consistent with the properties of his traditional enamel, and that is something understandably counter intuitive to our present day "government" paint formulations and best practices. The simple freezer bag trick is also brilliant! If this man spends too much time in his driveway, he is going to be targeted as a disruptive technology! lol

    One year ago I knew nothing about painting but I wanted to fill\prime\paint my car by myself. I read about painting a car with rustoleum and watched some videos and I thought it is a very good idea and cheap. Now I'm sure it is a very bad idea! Look at the video, he sanding a car with 400 grit sand paper. You know what does it mean? 1) It has to be many many layers of paint (means extra money + extra time). Because 400 grit will leave huge marks. 2) To make paint glossy you will need to increase grit very slightly: 400-600-800-1000-1200-1500 (usually it requires 1-2 more extra steps with 2000 or 3000) .So it is very time consuming! Polishing a whole car take about 14 hours if you have good experience\good tools. Polishing a car with a normal paint job which doesn't require 400 grit! Don't forget that sanding by hand leaves more marks than random orbital polisher with the same grit. Bad abrasives leave scratches even if you do everything correctly. If a paint job is bad, it will be very difficult to make it look smooth in difficult areas such as areas near handles etc.
    For a small car, with a good spray gun it is enough 1L of base coat and 1L of clear coat. The price for this is not much higher than 4 L of rustoleum. You can get a cheap compressor and than sell it. The same with a spray gun. If you paint your car with a spray gun with good 2K basecoat\clear coat you won't need to sand it = saves your time and money you spend on abrasives\cutting compound\pads etc. Your car will look glossy just after you painted it. You spend 10 times (I don't exaggerate) less time and you have a better result. You probably will need to spend 2 times more money than on rustoleum plus brushes\abrasives\cutting compounds etc

    • @OrlandoVIDADS
      @OrlandoVIDADS  Před 7 lety +2

      i used 400 grit wet sponge to sand the panels of the car before i painted to take off the oxidation and to prep the surface of the car for the new paint to adhere to. if you look at my other video the paint job came out much better than what i was experiencing with a roller. czcams.com/video/4m1HZwZX5WI/video.html i don't think i make much sense in the video but at least you get a good look at the paint job on the car.
      Sure if people want to buy a spray gun and compressor and paint their car they certainly should. The whole point with a roller or paper towel is for those who don't want to spend much money; or who don't have a good place to use a paint sprayer. i painted my car in the drive way 3 feet away from another car.
      i am not a painter. i just was not getting the results i hoped for with a roller, but i did using paper towels. i just put this out there for people who were looking for an option.

    • @user-uq2wk7wo5e
      @user-uq2wk7wo5e Před 7 lety

      I already explained that money is not an issue here! You don't save money. 1) You waste too much time. 2) You can buy used compressor and spraygun and then sell them. 3) good avrasives are not cheap, and you don't need them if you spray. You only need to scuff old paint for adhesion.
      BTW 400 wet sanding is too coarse! It equals appx 240 dry sanding. Use grey scotch brite instead (it is about 1000) with paste

      A coat of paint for the whole car would take about 45 minutes with a paper towel. it goes on smooth and flat. The orange peel is so light you can put on three coats before you need to do any light sanding. The sanding is easy and goes quickly . i kept my paint in a cup with a gallon size baggy to seal up the paint after i would use it. i had nothing to clean up and the paint was already mixed for the next few coat. i would use just half of a paper towel and through it away after each coat.

    I am not sure if this serious or a video like putting a magnet on your cable wire speeds up your internet. I am with the guy that said this would take 2 weeks to accomplish. My opinion? Total garbage. Painting a car with an HVPL gun and Rust-Oleum not all that difficult and far better results . There is also a car paint that comes pre-thinned ready to spray. You can buy an old door at pick and pull and practice on it. In two weeks you'll be able to paint a car good, fast and perfect. JMHO.
