- You can buy an airplane for less than $20,000? Well you can build this basic airframe for less than that according to manufacturer's pricing. Add basic instruments and engine and you could possibly get away with one for around $25,000!
In this episode of Aviation and Money we look at the ultralight Hummel UltraCruiser. I've been looking around for my next build project and found this one to be quite interesting. I searched the web and this video is what I came up with. Give them a look and possibly see them if you are making the trip to Oshkosh this year. It seems they will be there!

Looks like Sam P. In that shiniest part 103 if im not mistaken. He was kind enough to let me fly in his Superstol. He also owned an ultra cruiser. He past away over a year ago but he inspired many people.
Cool
Great presentation ..
Thanks a lot
Cool plane 😎
I will have to let you know that part 103 empty weight is 254 pounds. That dry weight no gas or oil. Also that means LESS than 254.....253.15oz. Is true limit. My new Hummel Ultra Cruiser came in at 245.5 pounds. You had said weight of 270....
Thanks for the input Dennis! So is the lighter weight easily attainable (as per plans) or are you weighing every single part and river as you assemble. Our ultralight rules are quite different in Canada with tons of wiggle room when compare to the states.
Hi@@HUDPilot you sir in Canada I guess have it made!! By the way did you notice my little blue round thing with the UC in it is your click bait??? Yes I did do some lighting on some parts when I built my 2nd UC. I know now there are a few more places I could have saved weight. God bless you
Click bait? I don’t do that. I try to keep the image on what the video is supposed to be about. What blue circle?
Hi@@HUDPilot lol sorry about the click bait sir!! But your title shot was my airplane so I clicked on it!! The blue dot is left of my name with my Ultra Cruiser in it.....
Ahhhh Dennis, I understand. Lol. Well then if we say that I put the prettiest plane i saw on there then you are right! Lol. Click bait for some. Lol.
You planning on Oshkosh? I trying to make it this year and would love to see the plane up close. I am beginning to look for the next project. Currently have parts for a midget mustang (had already built one before and was a little tight for me) but not committed to it. Would love to try an UC on for size.
Good vid 👍
For 17,000 I would choose the plane. I don't really care for Nissan Versa's.
I am not seeing any problem with your logic. Lol.
I'm pretty sure this airplane can fly in reverse, in slow flight with a strong headwind.
I have seen a piper cub land "vertically" on an extremely windy day... so I guess anything is possible lol
Nice video. It’s a shame that you can’t get license free ultralights in Australia just yet.
Glad you enjoyed it! Maybe over time. But do they not have some reduced requirement license? Less hours, etc?
Can I get one where?
Hi Alan. Check them out. www.hummelaircraft.com/ultracruiser
I’d never heard of that manufacturer. I think if I were to build, it’d be Vans or Sonex.
Been around for a while. Vans great but that takes you into 100k easily if not careful. Sonex is the next place I am looking at. Holding off on deciding once I see the high wing both companies come out with.
@@HUDPilot I suspect Van's will have their new high wing ac at Oshkosh this year. Looking forward to seeing it. Wasn't aware that Sonex was doing the same. Thanks for the info!
@North Dakota Ham ,,,,,,,Yeah Sonex had announced it a short while ago.. they said they were focusing on that two seat jet and this was next on their board. Given I am looking at possibly building a sonex next, I think I would wait for the high wing .... the sun coming through my bubble is wearing me out... hot as heck in the summer!! lol. I am finalizing my plans for Oshkosh next week and will see saturday if it is a go or not. I do have it in my EAA calendar for monday night where Vans will talke about the 15.
Hope to see you there if you can find me in the HBC!
@@HUDPilot won't make it to Oshkosh. Metal in the filter and parts are taking a long time. Son is working on it.
@North Dakota Ham.
Sorry to hear. I am not stressing over Oshkosh this year. Each year I have tried to make it down in my plane and life always gets in the way. THEN I either bang myself in the head for not going OR I go the big metal route (time constraints) and STILL bang my head for not taking my plane. So this year … I will wake up on the 23rd. If the stars align… I will go. If not, oh well :-)
