meat color aside… this was not an emergency. A 911 call over this was not warranted in any way. The caller should be facing charges.

@@zambachooThe thing is, she clearly stated HER concern was self centered. She wanted a different plate of food that wasn't pink, or she wanted a refund. So she definitely wasn't wearing a cape to safeguard the citizens so to speak.🤷
Exactly. Call your lawyer. 911 is for life critical emergencies. Her personal emergency was getting the refund she asked for.

I was walking through dispatch one time when a 911 call came in from a woman who wanted to know how many teaspoons were in three tablespoons. The dispatcher handling the call actually told her (I would not have known) and wished her luck with her cake or whatever she was cooking.
I went to a BBQ place in Portland, OR once and they had a big sign that said “smoked meat is supposed to be pink”
BBQ is a fish out of water in Portland
The Pacific Northwest has a long history of smoked meat and fish, just not necessarily Texas or Carolina style.

I live near Raleigh, I remember this when it happened. It was all over the daily news briefs on the radio. Even the customers were trying to explain to the lady even if they cook it more it's not going to take that pink away. This is almost as bad as the guy suing the Texas Pete Company for not being from Texas. People can be idiots sometimes.

I often forget that a lot of people aren't familiar with BBQ or even just basic cooking for that matter. It's a major life skill that I think a lot of people seem to lack.
Agree so many people have no clue what pre cooked food looks like. Or how to cook.
I knew there was a twist on this video when I saw the elaborate thumbnail....lol. Despite the comedy of the story, which....was absolutely abuse of the 911 system hahaha....this video turned out to be quite a learning experience, actually! Of course, I knew the "pink" is the smoke ring, but never knew the complete science of how it gets there. So thank you, Jeremy, for that! A few years ago while eating breakfast , a lady sent her sausage back because of the pink ring. The waitress explained that it was a smoked product. The look on the ladie's face showed that she did not understand at all!!

Great advice/information. I am a pitmaster at a local BBQ in Ohio. Most customers in Ohio have no idea about BBQ in general (like we run out of items some times) and that a pink ring is acceptable. I wanted to comment on chicken. When BBQing chicken, there may not be a smoke "ring". But, if the chicken has been frozen and then cooked in BBQ (over wood slowly) near the bone will have pink meat. Some people freak out over this. The BBQ chicken is thoroughly cook and safe to eat but the perception is its under cooked.

got a call from my daughter years ago, said she had been cooking a corn beef in a crock pot for two days and it was still pink.
I live in NC and remember seeing this going around when it happened. News interviewed the owners and sounds like they did their best to educate her but she wouldn’t have it. I think she even tried to accuse them of being racist.
I was at a BBQ place awhile back, this lady was complaining an yelling that her food was uncooked, undercooked, not cooked saying it was all pink, didn't call the police, but she was angry, some people around were laughing pretty good over it, because we all knew it was that incredibly, extremely delicious, famous smoke ring, she stormed out, it was a crazy scene
I have a red/green deficiency (minor colour blindness) so I see just a ring. Never knew it was pink.... LOL

I was at a friend's house for a Thanksgiving party. We had a smoked turkey (store bought). A lady was going around saying not to eat it, that it was not fully cooked.
My mother in law did the same when I smoked turkey for Thanksgiving
I had a similar experience I had to show the person with my electric meat thermometer that it was in fact cooked.

Amazing that someone could be so brain dead that they A.) Call 911 regarding a problem with their food. B.) Think that it is physically possible for meat to be raw pink on the outside, yet fully cooked on the inside, at the same time. Sadly, the movie Idiocracy, is no longer a comedy, it's a documentary.

I do a bit of bbq for the guys on my adult baseball team. I once sent a picture of it after it was pulled to the other managers in the league. The dude from Texas said that it might be under done and I told him that it’s a smoke ring. I don’t know it on the level you do but I definitely study and practice.

I ate at a BBQ joint and on the menu they had a disclaimer about the smoked chicken looking pink but is fully cooked. So apparently this happens from time to time.
I always have to preface when smoking things like sausages because sometimes almost the entire sausage can be pink except for the very center which is the color they'd expect from a cooked sausage. I have to promise it's cooked, but if they have doubts, explain how I only cooked the centre of the sausage while leaving the outside raw

OMG! 44 years of eating pink meat? How many million billion times should I be dead.... However, pink chicken near bone, almost did kill me once.
I knew this would be about Cooper's. 🤣 When people bring cheap BBQ (always pork) to a party or church function, it's orange, finely chopped, with bits of bone and fat. The late, great H. Kent Craig liked to say he wouldn't feed that stuff to his dog.
Fast food, Smithfield's or Cook-Out, is gray and mushy from steam holding.
Cooper's does sublime pork, slaw and tea. Get extra vinegar sauce for the cracklins.
Decent brisket and "fat smoke" are almost unheard of here. The best ribs come from a Texas-style chain called City BBQ.
She obviously also doesn't understand what 911 is for either. Its not a tattle tail hotline. Someone could literally die because shes on the phone upset with a restaurants customer service.
My mother in law asked, one time "why is it raw on the outside, and cooked in the middle"? I let her know and she said ok then.
Totally off topic - have you ever done a test to confirm keeping your meat surface wet helps the smoke to stick or not? Thx for everything you do. You have helped me a ton. God Bless
I went through this at my house when my mother came over to try my bbq.
She only likes to eat meat burnt to shoe leather and freaked out at seeing the smoke ring.
She did try a bite, but almost spat it back out because there was pepper on it...
She mostly stuck to eating the chicken, picking off the skin.
Growing up, I didn't understand why my grandmother's cooking was so much better when my mother's cooking was dry and bland, until I started cooking for myself around the age of 10.
I'm just glad I didn't inherit her palette.

Kudos for detailing the event without disparaging the misinformed customer. Others would simply point and laugh at her and pile-on and encourage their commenters to join in. After all that is the easiest way to get likes, follows and monetiziation. Usda also lowered its recommendation for pork. Yes, it's safe to eat pink pork. A loin or chop will be more juicy. Give it a try people.
Funny this came up as yesterday I gave my neighbor a plate of some smoked drumsticks and he said he didn’t eat it because it was pink. I didn’t care to explain but ima send him this now haha
