Two guys tried to carjack me about a decade ago and I used my firearm defensively. The officers looked at my gun, wrote down the serial, handed it back to me and told me to have a good night. No other action taken. I went home with my life and the pizza I was trying to get.
I love the fact that four guys with very passionate opinions can calmly have such a civil discussion. They can disagree without becoming disagreeable. They should run for Congress!

Also to the topic at the 1 hour mark - don't have bumper stickers or signs in your yard that give anything away, I've seen signs that show you have guns, don't have guns, have little kids, have a teenage girl in the local high school, sometimes even a uniform number for a school sports team etc. And it always horrifies me that anyone driving by can see it.

Im with you on the first half, absolutely. But lights are to be able see, the sling keeps the gun attached to you. I'm bad about not keeping slings on my rifles honestly, but they're actually fairly important. Especially if you're not some meal team broperator with seal petting experience who knows how to properly pie and clear rooms with a rifle.
Def wanna see the M&P vs. the FN in 10mm. Been going back and forth between those two as to which one to pick up.
9mm rounds have been crafted to well in this age you don’t really need 10mm unless your worried about bears I guess

It would be great to see you guys sit-down with Masad Ayoob, who is the firearms guru when it comes to law enforcement combat shooting and personal defense. He has been around forever (since the 70s) and really understands the law regarding personal defense.
I'm a retired, old school Leo, now an old man, but for 19 of my 22 year career I was a collateral duty firearms instructor, and it was guys like Ayoob who were our go to for quality instruction techniques.
My home is now an apartment in a senior complex, so I have neighbors just on the other side of a wall. I also have a layered approach, as does my 90 year old father, with loaded pistols available in each room/area of my home. That way if I'm in the kitchen, say, and someone breaks in, I don't have to try and race to my bedroom to retrieve my defensive firearm. I keep a Ruger LCP, .380, with laser light, and two mags of high quality defensive ammo in a kitchen drawer; a Ruger SP 101 with 5 rounds of. 38 spl, self defense rounds with a DeSantis 2x2x2 pouch next to the bed; in a dresser drawer I keep a Sig P220, .45 acp, with 2 mags of mixed hydra shock, golden saber, and black talon ammo (it doesn't have night sights so it's not my night primary) ; and finally in my hobby room (I build ship models) I keep a Ruger Vaquero in .45 Long Colt, hanging in a holster in my gun safe closet, with Hornaday critical defense rounds (no night sights) and also a SCCY 9mm, with 2 mags of self defense rounds available .
I DO NOT have children or grandkids in my apartment, just a killer attack dachshund, which is my early warning system believe me if you know the breed, nothing gets within 20 feet of your building and they will loudly announce an intruder alert.😂. And when family or friends with children do come for a visit, all firearms are locked in the safe.
While it sounds like I'm nuts, the reality is the firearms are not out in an open area, and I know that no matter where I am , short of carrying a firearm on my person in my home, I can quickly reach a firearm.
I ruled out both a shotgun and long rifle, because I live in an apartment complex, and a responsible gun users, we are very much responsible for each and every round that leaves the barrel of our firearms. It's no consolation to say I stopped an intruder with my rifle, but also dropped my next door neighbor while she was sitting in her recliner watching jeopardy.
Anyway, just an old retired LEO'S thoughts on the topic.
I agree with both sides! The light and the sling go on at the same time when I bring the gun home, along with whatever optic I’m going to use.

The thing with the whole "just rack the shotgun and the sound will scare them" idea is either you just dropped a round in an already limited capacity weapon, or the weapon wasn't ready to go.

I like the idea of passive not obvious hard target house. but very capable of being defended... and left when needed! I have both fresh and saltwater access and egress. I have major roadways east and west as well as north and south ish within walking distance. I have an airfield for small engine and rotor winged aircraft. I have anti surveillance measures in place and the ability to implement even more(to the point of illegal) and I will apologize right now to the families of the first dozen people unwelcome in my house because they died without me even having to be here. short of being a high altitude stealth bomber you've been seen by the time you are at my house. if you got past the gates and walls and dogs and lights and guards and cameras and motion/thermal stuff... the surprise at the doors and windows will just be a fun bonus.
I 100% agree with Kaya. ESPECIALLY with children. PID is important…but that’s why you’re not ever clearing the house using your weapon light. You need a seperate light. You need a sling to be able to pid without using your weapon light. You need a sling to guide your kids and use your hands for everything but hold your rifle.

some people have the mental state to fight through being shot and others will just give up, sit down and wait to bleed out.
for that reason, you cannot depend on just the caliber or load being what decides effectiveness. you need to use a sufficient caliber and you need to be proficient, but there is some element that will be a factor of who comes into your house.
there are some injuries that will stop a person directly, but shot placement matters to get those, so don't let down until the fight is over.
Opinions vary greatly on this subject.
Wow, lots of great information. But it all boils down to situation. I'm in a city, simple track home, I have heavy steel security screen doors on both entry doors and double pane windows all around. (and I keep everything locked at all times. I'm a light sleeper and I doubt anyone is going to gain entry without getting noticed. I have handgun on the nightstand and other guns staged in the house. I even have guns in the garage. I also have motion sensor lights on my perimeter and outdoor cameras.
But I still remain observationally diligent.
I have the Galil 7.62x39 8.3 barrel with subs and suppressor. Runs like a champ and get no gas in the face.

I put a sling on before the light, it was a cost thing. The BFG sling was easier to obtain than the cloud defensive light. They are both necessary, but if one has to come first, sometimes circumstances dictate what’s first. In my case, it was the correct choice. I’ve had to use neither so far, thank you, Jesus!
Best defensive gun is the one you feel comfortable and competent using, and do use.
Dogs at least warn you there is someone out there and I lived in the country by myself . I have had cameras taken down ( even in the trees ) and as long as my dog was there I knew if anything was out there , then I had to put him down and I really had a hard time without him so I moved 🤷🏻♀️
I have a s&w M&S shield 2 9mm, M&p shield ez 9 for the wife, LWRC Di and a ruger sr.40c scattered randomly throughout my home with 3 dogs and game cameras throughout my yard
I guess my home is different, I have four Great Pyrenees, four Siberians and four other mixes. The early warning is absolute, my Springfield XP Service 45 with 185HP's is for limited over penetration just like the 300Blk with 220gr subs. Wife has her Hellcat W/red dot. We don't really fear break-ins and we are friendly with the local PD that are a great bunch of people.
I think a good home defense setup for a long gun is a bullpup rifle with a shotgun attached to it, either in an underslung fashion or integrated into it, or a PCC with a shotgun attached to it. Basically, guns functioning like the Morita rifle from Starship Troopers or the M41A pulse rifle from Aliens (the way the props were made, not how they work in their respective universes)
My first choice right now would have to be genesis arms gen 12 with mags full of buckshot. Second would probably be adams arms 308 pistol
Easy light. Sling seems very options. I see very few scenarios where a sling is beneficial in home defense. I see very few situations where a light isn’t. I believe most home defense is a hunker situation not a fight situation. But that’s house dependent.

Yes, that’s the situation that I can realistically think of maybe moving something heavy. However, a light is offensive defensive, and positive I identification, all in one.
36:45 I'm running a sling on everything! What happens if there's more than one person and the second one tackles you? You're dropping that gun. I want to keep retention on it. That said, I'm putting a light on my home defense gun the second I pick it up. But I'm also putting a sling on it that day. Light, iron sights (at a minimum) and sling would be purchased all at the same time as the firearm

I have darkening curtains and I did actually walk across the street when I moved from the country to a town in a secure building apartment and I could see everyone in their apartments, I don’t sit in front of the window especially if they can see me .
9mm PCC "pistol" with a light and a brace using irons or a shake awake RDS. Or a handgun with a light.
I do carry my edc on me 99.7% of the time around the home. If it isn’t on me, it’s normally within arms reach. I’ve rarely ever not had it and that was to let the dogs out bc they were acting like they were going to pee on the floor if I made them wait another 5 seconds, but I will go back and grab it while they do their business. I would usually have at least a knife with me or a socp dagger.

Great gun. It’s not “mainstream” so finding holsters might be a little harder but that’s really the only downside.
Well, unfortunately, studies based upon interviews and witness statements have proven the sound of a shotgun racking and it scares off the intruder is just an urban myth. No data supports the "rack a shotgun and it sends fear in the intruder".
The criminals in prison say it only gives them a notification of where the homeowner is and what they are armed with. That sound gives away your chance of surprise.
Stagger the 00buck and slugs...shock and awe

I'd like to see a Value Carry Gun Under $300 comparison. For those who will never be able to afford FN, SIG, etc.....
It would add value to this discussion if you listed exactly what each person was recommending, and the added accessories. Someone might want to buy that gun, whatever it is.
So hear me out I get both sides of the argument and in my opinion it’s situational… unless you’ve been in a situation where someone tries to rip a gun away from you, you won’t realize that a sling is the most important attachment on a rifle, however the same goes for a light, until you’ve been in a situation in which it’s so dark that you can’t make anything out you won’t see the light as the most important. Personally for me I will choose light, just because my house has an almost U shaped staircase with a wall on each side, the downstairs because I hate having my blinds open is pitch black, so being how my front and rear door both set of an alarm that beeps both in the house and on my phone if someone comes in I need to be able to know who it is. However my last apartment was a condo with those huge floor to ceiling windows on the 10 floor of a building, in that situation I would’ve said sling, because the layout had my room in the back of the house, if I walked out of my room I’d walk past the laundry closet, a linen closet, bathroom and then into the kitchen/living room… which is where my front door is…. So in that case anything outside my door was lit with natural light and at that point I cared more about having a sling in case someone was in the closet or bathroom or the rest of the house rather than if I can make the place brighter…

I have motion sensors that turn on lights all over my house and outside that’s why a sling is more important to me than a light

I think it’s more than if there’s a possibility that you don’t have to kill somebody because they hear a sound and they take off running and that’s still a win without someone having to die, I’m driving so I did this on talk to text so I hope it’s OK lol

"environment dictates tactics" sums it up.
My plan is different from yours.
Spend 15 min thinking through your specific environment (and how stable your kids/teens are). You may decide on something that others would make fun of you for. Ignore them. You do what is right for your situation.

Best part about anywhere I live, two sentient security guards that sleep at both of my sides. My dogs let me know if ANYONE walks up to my house at all hours of the night. Plenty of time to grab my rifle and set up a defensive stance. Gott train em though gang, you don’t want asshole dogs who just bark all the time

Assuming it was reliable in all of your testing and you had to choose a shotgun. What shotgun would you choose for home defense?
I'm torn between a KSG(maybe a KSG25), or a DP-12.
Again if they both tested great and I was forced to use a shotgun.
If that's your price range, 1301 all day. I never thought I'd shoot one I like better than my Super Black Eagle but Beretta absolutely nailed it.
@@MrCashewkitty my price range was 10k for home defense. But if forced to use a shotgun and it was proven reliable I'd prioritize capacity. So I wouldn't use the 1301 as fun as it is.

@@MrCashewkitty I don't think that you're able to understand what I'm saying. If the KSG and DP-12 are proven reliable, because capacity is important, I would choose one of those if I was forced to use a shotgun for home defense.
Let me word it differently if the reliability of the 1301 and ksg and dp12 was the same, then I would choose the ksg or dp12. Does that make sense?
@@fantomexofficial I understand but kel tech isn't known for thier QC or reliability. I know first hand how reliable the Benneli m4 is, I carried one. Theb1301 is dominating competition circles and they shoot FAR more rounds than any military or LE applications. Capacity for a home defense shotty would not be my priority. 8 rounds of 12 Guage would handle any home invasion situation.

If they weren't so MESSY, geese would be better indoor warning systems than your dogs are. Outdoors geese ALWAYS sound off before the dogs do when someone or something enters the property.
If your not an avid shooter...keep it simple. Mossberg 88 and high FPS rounds. If your a legit shooter...go crazy

Guys, nice, how many guns do you have out for home defense? All of those are great if you carry 25/7. For home defense I have 3 HI POINT pistols and 2 carbines scattered around the house for home defense and my roommate has 2 HI POINT pistols and 3 carbines, as well. So for the house we've got 10 firearms costing < $2500. They are ugly, heavy, and worth every cent.

The chances of a home invasion are higher then any other incident outside the home, why dont people KEEP their Carry Gun ON THEM in the home??? Having guns placed all over like most "say" they do isnt practical by any means.
