      Exactly. There is no back end profit with EVs because they don't need the same level of repair and maintenance as ICE vehicle do. Dealerships make virtually all their money on repairs and service, not on selling new cars and trucks.

      ​@@rotaryenginepetedepends where. And yea, we've been aggressively bringing down the price of gas lately as much as possible.
      But that is why most ev charging happens off a slow charger. Cars spend 95%+ of their lives parked. If that's not at home, it could be near a wall outlet at work or in a parking lot - might even be free. Beyond that, we need more level 2 charging in the US than more fast chargers. They would fit great in work parking lots, malls, and apartment complexes all over the country.

      @@Cyrribrae according to the EIA the US national average price of gas went above $3/gal in 2021 and over the last year it has been going up...not down. Also, who's "we" lol?

      @@rotaryenginepete Depends... in CA, with both high gas AND electric/DCFC rates, EV home/worst supercharging is still 10-15c/mi (34-50c/kwh), vs gas 15-32c/mi (30-17mpg, $4.50-5.50/gal.)
      My roadtrips have been 30-50% cheaper than gas, and much more enjoyable... and my home charging is FREE as I have paid-off rooftop solar.
      Other states may vary dep on gas/charger prices, and non-Tesla DCFC

    I will never purchase a new car again from a traditional dealership. Traditional dealerships are the problem with EV adoption.

      Eh, people say that then give their money to online ordering where they are getting hit with record high markups from the factory because there isn't a dealer network to play off of. I hate stealerships for a reason but it just takes a bit of negotiating and willingness to walk down the street to the next guy to actually get a good price. Save up for your next car with a solid investment vehicle instead of paying interest or lease payments so you have a chance to make a strong cash offer. An hour or so of work negotiating will save you thousands. This and dealer websites have manager specials, or you can just email a manager with offers. Nothing pisses off the sales staff more than walking in and just needing to sign the papers.
      The only car you should get with a car note is your first one. For me it was my second, after I finished paying that one off I just took the cash I would otherwise had spent on a car every month and saved it in an online high interest account, or high dividend index following ETF (I do a combo of both now), so it is essentially a reverse car loan, where the bank (and market) is paying me to use my money instead of the other way around. You will be surprised how liberating it is to sign over a check instead of a bunch of lease/loan paperwork, also the finance department takes it like a dagger! Never mention paying for the car in full with cash until the price is set, just use the cash to claim a large down payment then in the end say you will just write a check for the car, I made that mistake, once!
      Then use all the thousands you saved to invest in the next car or treat yourself to a nice vacation or something. It's not all that hard really, just a skill to develop.

      @@anydaynow01 Dealing with Tesla was great. $250.00 deposit held the car. Final price delivery charge air tax and taxes all laid out in a simple text message. Model Y like all tesla's have three or four options, the cars are very spartan. No up-selling, no pressure, all online there is no wheeling and dealing.

    We have owned or leased many ICE vehicles over the last 35+ years but nothing compares to the tranquility of an BEV. Drive one and you will realize what you have been missing.

    Oem’s aren’t struggling to sell, they are actively trying to dissuade people to buy them as they not only lose a ton of money with each sale, but also a ton of money on the back end with no service. It’s not that hard people.

      I’ve been saying that for years to anybody who would listen. The whole model that legacy USA OEMs use, outsourcing, distributed computing, dealerships etc make emulating Tesla impossible. Too many people on that gravy train who have an interest in making EVs fail. However, the Chinese don’t have a century of entrenched bureaucracy to deal with. If allowed to enter the US market they will finish off what the Japanese started.

      Agree with all of that, plus OEMs started by converting ICE platforms (compromised results), looked to sell very expensive cars (to hide their elevated manufacturing costs) and looked to fleece their customers by watching dealers shaft buyers at every opportunity. The electrification of transport is unstoppable, ICE vehicles pollute the air we breath and is based on depleting resources that will cost more and more while EVs are dependent on primary energy that’s a technology and that’s all coming down in price as innovation persists. I’ve owned 19 BMWs and the one was a V8 740 sport. I loved it, but we all need to move on. I now own an i3S for £16k and love it. My daughter is about to buy 2021 Audi Etron 55 for £25k. Depreciation is the savvy buyers friend. Goodbye ICE, long live EVs

      @@fwc3535 Yep exactly, as long as they have the UAW the Big two will never be able to compete in getting the best profit margin. Their biggest loss with the UAW negotiations is when the union got its tendrils into the battery and EV factories with "minimum labor requirements". Optimus will make the ultimate scab, it may not happen next year or even by the end of the decade, but eventually they are out of a job, AI and robotics are just too good. There are entire auto factories in China where a skeleton crew of humans are just involved in unloading raw materials, robot maintenance, and again in the quality control inspections AI can't do, yet.

    Always enjoyed working with Elizabeth at FCA/Stellantis. She is smart, down to earth and objective. I’ve owned a Tesla for 4 years now and it’s been an interesting transition to Elon’s world. It’s not perfect yet but the pluses outweigh the negatives and never going back. My factory warranty is 9/150 instead of 3/36. Plus Tesla has mobile service. Funny how older guys like John and Sandy went from negative to positive. My favorite car will always be my dad’s 59 Impala.

    I have 180,000 miles on my 2013. Tesla Model S and it’s been amazing. Every day you leave your house you have a full tank of electricity. Going to gas stations is highly overrated. I’ve never been stranded. I’m still on the original battery and I still get free supercharging for life. Over 11 years 95% of my charging has been at home.

      2016 110k miles, didn't do any oil changes, and didn't lose my warranty. Replaced a Lexus LS hybrid and a 911 GT3. Its better on long trips and better in the canyons. They showed me how to put the car in Ludicrous mode, it has not left it since. In the past 8 years, nothing, not even a motorcycle has taken me off the line that makes struggling noises when they pull up to me.

    The new EV3 SUV launching in two months from Kia starts at $32k with a maximum range of 350 miles. This will be a game changer NEVI funding with chargers every 50 miles on US national highways in the next three years will also take away range anxiety.

    I've been an EV driver for a decade, but only in the past 4 years have I been taking long (multi-state) trips. My last 2 cars had over 200 mile range. The one with less range is a much better trip car due to charging speed. I think the real sweet spot might be 400 miles or more. I say that because at highway speed the car will never get the advertised range. Forget total range, a car needs to have highway range of 225+ mile on a 30 minute charge. 75mph for 3 hours and charge for 30 minutes is very livable. I'm not there, but I'm confident that my next car with be very close to that.

      I drove an EV for several years, but now I'm back to ICE again. In some cases EV are nice, but in most cases they just aren't worth all the extra hassles.

      Anyway, I think OP has it right. My sweet spot is 250 miles in 15 minutes, which I think is a little further away. Any faster than that, and I'm staying to use the bathroom and stretch and eat a meal anyway. Regardless, if you're doing a lot of road tripping, speed of charging is just so much more relevant than total range. And we're setting the limits of that continously get nudged upwards. We'll see if we can break through the glass in the next couple of years that really upends the model.

      Imagine you could get 400 miles in 3 minutes, anywhere, anytime, any weather, any speed, and that will not degrade over time. Then you could stop for 30 minutes anywhere and anytime you wanted, and it's not going to be to hang out at the back of a crappy parking lot. We already have this, why go backwards?

    The rest of the auto industry pays between 20 and $0.30 more per kilowatt hour to charge. It's a benefit to own a Tesla if you supercharge often.

      Correct. The Supercharger system cost was folded into the sales price of Tesla EVs. Other brands will get charged more because they haven't contributed.

    Tesla Superchargers that get congested regularly are not available to other brands of EVs. Tesla has made most of their Superchargers available because most of them are not really congested and adding more vehicles can make them more cost effective.

    And to comment on the waking up and wanting to go to Chicago, how often do people really do that? People plan trips most of the time or they can rent and save the rest of the year. Fear is the biggest problem so plug ins solve that to break the fear

      As often as they want in a gas car. I don't generally plan a trip around anything other than the destination, but if I really want to make 45 minute stops along the way- they'd be at interesting places I want to visit, not hanging around the back of parking lots.

    22:11 Thing is, it's the SAME thing for a BEV. They charge at the same speed as the PHEV (sometimes more, depending the PHEV). It's just that the battery is so much bigger...but you don't need to be "full". Just replace the miles you spent getting to work. You'll get that same replacement on a BEV, usually better because BEV's are more efficient at using that same amount of juice.

    1. The Tesla Nav tool and a 3rd party app called "a better route planner" makes long-trip planning with charging stops a breeze. The Tesla Nav feature will make real-time decisions on SuperCharger selection based on congestion issues to minimize the probability of having to wait. I have taken several 1000+ mile trips using the Tesla nav tool without problems.
    2. Include some questions about ADAS capability among brands and customer awareness of ADAS capability. Is ADAS another customer education gap like long-trip charging?
    A great guest. It was great to get more detail on how JD Power does their surveys.

      @@stickynorth I am not a young guy, and I have friends that are retired and older. Some are anti EV and don't get it. I ask them how many more cars they will buy in their lifetime. Usually, the answer is usually between 0 and 2. That's why it's a waste of time, focus and money to target the older generation for EV sales.
      There will be some tech savvy older folks that will purchase and get it, like John. The rest are like Gary.
      The younger generations are the future sales of EVs. Old folks are good target consumers for the Robotaxi and autonomous mobility services, because it will give them freedom they'd otherwise lose when they're too old to drive safely.

    EV public charging providers have zero marketing chops. They need to promote their locations with signage along the highways that same way gas stations do. Gas station signs are everywhere and are a huge part of the ICE driver’s lack of range anxiety. I’ve yet to see an EV charging badge on the “Food-Lodging-Fuel” signs approaching Interstate highway exits, much less on billboards. The industry doesn’t seem to comprehend the impact that just letting people know that you’re there will have on potential customers’ range fears.

Is the quality of the gas at the cheap station the same as the other one? Now, those problems, are for those people, and their miserable lives.

    you mentioned Hertz dumping their teslas... did you consider the MILES on them? What I saw was a much higher mileage on teslas than their other cars when put out to pasture. much higher.

    I did drive a Prius since 2008 to 2013. From 2013 until today I drive Tesla. No oil changes much less service. Charging at home and at work for free as we have solar panels on our roof. Never saved more money on a car. Driven 360.000 km lots of long road-trips all over EU since 2013 a bit tricky back then much easier today.

    Don't know if Chinese manufacturers are sending their cars to test for US safety tests but they sure are doing so in Europe and coming out with top flight results. And I don't believe european tests are much different to those in the US.

    A VW salesman was actively trying to talk me away from the EV life, this after I told him I was just dropping off the ID4 for a door seal replacement and waiting for my ride in the Mini SE for a 140 mile day trip ( in a car that's EPA rated at 110 miles). Apparently our way of life isn't possible - basically the gist I gathered from our brief conversation.....this from an active VW/Hyundai salesman....
    Can't make this up.

    My grandparents really had to plan their trips. They would take the train to a city down the valley on the weekend for shopping. When roads and cars came along we would go on family picnics in the country or they would come to visit on a weekend. They would talk about the freedom and increased social activity. As a kid I didn't really understand the excitement.

    Look, here is the deal. I own both a wrangler PHEV and a ford lightning. the drive of my BEV lightning is FAR superior to the PHEV, although yes wranglers ride rough, but also the PHEV drivetrain is so clanky, back and forth electric drive train, then gas drivetrain back and forth.
    Not to mention you still have ALL the maintainence headaches of an ICE PLUS the worries of electric issues later on with the PHEV. so double the trouble, still expensive, not a good driving experience, and you still buy GAS! PHEVs are DUMB. if your unable to have a BEV for whatever reason, fine, just get a hybrid.
    Ill NEVER own another ICE. BEV all the way, my lightning has been above my expectations by all measures, and it already has 65k miles trouble free. I charge at home level 2. i'm in love.

    I’ve traveled 7k miles across the east and west US and I’ve never seen a non Tesla charging at a Supercharger. Also, only V3s are open to non Teslas.

    Krear alluded to the ‘social contagion’ aspect of EV adoption. Until folks see their neighbors using an EV and can ask questions about EV ownership from folks they trust, they are uncomfortable with the change from something that already works for them. Crossing the chasm from early adopters to mainstream adoption has always been a tenuous time for new tech.

      except EV's aren't a new tech. Thomas Edison built and drove EV's. They have been around since the mid-1800's. Mainstream adoption requires greater practicality and utility than the product being replaced, an advantage that EV's will inherently never have due to the laws of physics and chemistry.

The truth is that it's not the engine efficiency that determines practicality, but the energy density of the fuel. Batteries are capped at 1/40th the density of liquid fuels like gas, diesel, hydrogen, or even carbon neutral synthetic fuels.

      @@rotaryenginepete ICE sales peaked in the u.s in 2017 during a growing economy at that and when there where still 80 mile evs for sale. Fast forward the lowest range you can get now is 200 miles for the same price as the older 80 mile EVs. In 2025 the first 300 mile evs under $40k are entering the market.

    I’ve got solar panels and am planning on installing more batteries. I do not own oil wells or oil refineries. As someone who strongly thinks that oil and electricity prices will keep rising rapidly. My primary complaint about EVs and all vehicles is that vehicles are way, way oversized and way too expensive. A new truck costs more than twice what it did twenty years ago. The Chinese are going to end Ford, GM and Chrysler when they finally bring affordable EVs to the US. As for infrastructure, there are now six places where EV owners can charge in our small, rural county.

    Prologue and Blazer market has existed for 4 years with the Model Y and Mach E.

    Trendchasing consumers buy BEVs. Pragmatic consumers buy PHEVs. Love the use of the gascharger networks out there. About four to five times a year. 2011 Chevy Volt runs like new and no BEV offers me the value I have with an already defunct EV with Range Extender. The Volt.

    At the Plug in hybrid vs BEV conversation at 21:00, I can relate in the satisfaction score. I bought a Plug In Hybrid and was able to plug in at home daily, after two weeks of ownership I felt regret that I couldn’t obtain an EV. ( Affordable options were limited in 2016) After 6 months of Plug in Hybrid ownership and it was time for an oil change and my satisfaction continued to fall. I realized how hugely inconvenient it was when I had to take my car in for servicing because it would radically wreck my whole day. 6 years later I still like my Plug in, but it is just an appliance to me and I’m planning my next smart car (EV) purchase.

    Tesla has a whole line up of cash cows until the competition started, they were essentially doing dealer markups from the website because Teslaphiles would pay anything for the "privilege" to have one, then once the waiting lists of early adopters dried up they had to start cutting prices to remain competitive. They also have the best tech which helps them to maintain their market share. Elon sees the future though, and knows Tesla needs another revenue stream and isn't being as aggressive with building factories in low labor cost areas since they will essentially be run by Optimus and AI, so he can locate them in low tax and electric price zones in the countries where the products will sell and save a ton on shipping and tariffs.

    No way the average transaction price BEFORE government incentives is $35,000 for compact SUV. She said average OEM incentives were up $6,000 but the average sale price went down $15,000. Average Mach E Ioniq 5 and Model Y aren’t that cheap before incentives.

    I have been shopping for an EV for about 2 weeks. GM and Hyundai dealership salesmen tried to talk me out of buying an EV pushing me to drive a Hybrid. Peeved me off. There is so much anti EV propaganda on social media paid for by the oil industry. Now oem auto makers are dragging their feet, interest rates are too high and the EVs are too expensive. For example, I drive a Subaru Forester-the best vehicle that I’ve ever owned, paid $25,000 in 2020 . The EV offering from Subaru is a rebadged Toyota and costs $55,000. I drove one. Nice but not even comparable to the drive and comfort of my Forester. Doesn’t quality for the Fed rebate etc. Can’t use the Tesla network currently and there is no way I’m spending over $30,000 for an EV. Peeves me off that these old school manufacturers refuse to make affordable EVs. GM ditched its only affordable EV! We are being manipulated and screwed as consumers while Europe has more affordable efficient EVs. The fix is in. One dealership said the transition to EVs won’t happen for another ten years. Pathetic

    One feature of the car market. Older people and non commuters. Buying an EV if you do less than 5000 miles a year likely is a poor decision. Best case for EV is a long distance commuter with free charging at work and low cost charging at home. This is the case in CA where not only was that useful but also HOV lane access. Take away a lot of the tax incentives and HOV allowances, the EV market certainly would drop. Look at kWh prices now at public DCFC….costs more than gas now. Consumers don’t yet know that.

      @@JD-yx7be Only if your paid-off vehicle stops working. A paid off ICE is the more economic choice for retired people and people who don't need to buy new things. Once used car lots fill with more EVs, this decision will be easier in the consumer space. Remember 60% or more live paycheck to paycheck and honestly should not even consider new cars. And I know a few people who make $200k a year and live paycheck to paycheck due to car payments and all that.

    EVs have not yet played to the key atributes of the technology. The atributes are a high power dense motor and a a high mass dense battery. The first should lead to a more spacious cabin as non-visible stuff in the dash is moved under the hood (as Tesla did with the CT) and it may lead to independent AWD and All-wheel-steer. The second permits a tall vehicle with the battery under the floor. Tesla has used high power density to put high power into the hands of people not trained to use it. As a result, it has upped the body structure of its vehicles to ensure the safety of passengers at very high speed. Governments should crack down on high power for on-road applications, with high power only available race-tracks. Most SUVs never get passed 60 kW unless someone is doing a ridiculous acceleration on a public road. The minimum motor in a Tesla is 200 kW, yet four 20 kW motors (one per wheel) is plenty for on-road applications. The size of the drivetrain components can be drastically reduced if sufficient power is provided. It also means a lot of mass can be removed from the vehicle as safety for very high power is not required.

    Estimates this year, which is pretty clear, Tesla is not going to beat their delivery number of 2023. The leader having no growth means some others will have growth but none are really growing much in the USA. China is where it is all happening. US consumers likely to warm up to good PHEVs when they charge at home.

    I’m trying to get quotes for insurance for a Tesla model 3, 2023 used model. Perfect driving record, no tickets and drive less than 5000 miles and am shocked at the high cost of insuring it. Was quoted $500 to $3000 per month insurance? WTF. Rip off. I’m going to walk away from the purchase and keep my Subaru Forester! I pay high insurance $1600 per year now already! Not paying $3500 per year for car insurance. Insurance companies are rip offs.

    It wouldn't be a political standpoint if there weren't government incentives on EVs. It's not a fair model to allow incentives on EVs and not ICE. Give ICE vehicles the same incentives and see what the data would show.

      You get in incentives for ice vehicle! The government subsidizes oil companies over $10 billion dollars a year to keep fuel prices low! If they didn't, we would be paying $7-$9 a gallon!

    The problem with EV's is that the hassles of owning one far out weight the benefits. The rush for EV's was all fake, all the customers who wanted a EV already has one. Everyone else just wants a normal car that works with the existing infrastructure and climate.

    Why do these so called experts know so little about Teslas and the Superchargers? Any Tesla owner knows how many charger stalls are available before they arrive at the Supercharger. Why does John think only a PHEV can recharge while at work on a level 2 charger? Level 2 can charge a BEV at 10 to 20 miles per hour, so 80 to 160 miles in an 8-hour shift.

    Number one my TESLA on a road trip tells me where to charge how many chargers how many use average wait time how long it’s gonna take to get me to 80% to finish my trip number two. I have adapter to use anybody’s charger number three probably around 60% Only charge at home unless on a long trip because it’s cheaper not that $12-$20 a fill up is bad Number three, TESLA plans on spending $500 million this year on Superchargers number four I encourage anyone to take a 60 minute free chest drive with full self driving at your local TESLA store so you know what you’re talking about five I I put the Tesla charger in my map. My car drives to it by itself and then it backs up by itself. I get out of the car left the handle from the charger pointed at my electrical door opens. I plugged it in. There’s a blue Tesla symbol next to it. I wait for it. Turn green my cards already pre-registered with TESLA. No, there is no putting my card in the charger. I go find a restroom. I get a snack. I look at my Tesla app in my phone, and usually I have five minutes to get back to my car I don’t smell like gas or diesel. I don’t step in gas or diesel and it usually only cost me between 12 and $20 to fill up grandpa keith

      Sorry to hear that.
      My car doesn't tell me where I have to go, I tell it where I want to go. I never have to wait, I pull right in and I get 400 miles in 3 minutes, any weather, any speed, and that will never degrade.
