Composed and performed by Cai Yayi 蔡雅艺
    Recitation: Chen Lanying
One of the oldest and best-preserved musical genres still in performance, Nanyin 南音 can be traced back to the Han dynasty (206 BCE- 220 CE). Featuring simple, elegant melodies often performed by a soloist or by winds, strings, and percussion, the style’s unique cultural importance earned it a position on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. “Heaven, Earth, and Humanity” was written by composer Cai Yayi in February of 2020 in this style as a prayer of healing in the wake of COVID-19. The lyrics are taken from the Daode Jing (The Way of Dao), an important philosophy text written by Lao Tzu in the 6th century BCE.
