    I adore how Nobodies are animated! It really emphasizes that these are hollow whisps, barely holding onto existence. They're all zipped up in these suits because otherwise they'd disappear into nothingness.

    I've always described the nobodies as being like "empty clothes", like jackets and coats gained a will of their own. Honestly its such a perfect way to visual what is essentially an empty husk by having them squish and shift their forms in nonsensical ways.
    Really cool to see their animations broken down like this.

      Absolutely! Empty clothes is a perfect way to describe it. When I was looking closer at the Gambler the other day, I realized its form actually pretty much IS empty clothes, which is fascinating!

I've played every game and kh2 the most BY FAR but I never analyzed the animation like you have for dusks before and it's so fricken creepy oh my god!! • @jackofalltrades6129
    @jackofalltrades6129 Před rokem +7

    I think something else to keep in mind:
    Xemnas was a scientist, someone with pure analysis in the way. Sorcerers are analytical by their attacks and movements, and very much match that part of Xemnas.

  • @Bunni89
    @Bunni89 Před rokem +10

    I like that you were very specific here with the phrasing "they are said to not possess emotions"
    Cos yeah, it's contentious in the fandom whether the "Nobodies actually CAN regain their heart, Xemnas just lied to them" thing was planned as early as kh2 or if it was a retcon. I think that your animation analysis is helping a lot to see a lot of things that might have been intentional foreshadowing that Nobodies aren't truly emotionless. (Or like, they start off being that way but develop their own sense of self and feelings over time) Cos a lot of these animations show a unique personality for each Nobody type, and it's interesting how they seem to get more and more hammy and unique as the game goes on! Sorcerers also fit this theory very well, as their animation aesthetic is very "Dusk but more", they're possibly the most alien and hard to read. It would make sense that if Xemnas is the one lying that Nobodies have no emotions, then the Nobodies directly controlled by him would be the ones most heavily restricted into emotionless behaviour. Poor lil dudes!

    • @Casandraelf
      @Casandraelf Před 7 měsíci +1

      i always figured nobodies like the org members behave kinda like psychopaths or sociopaths: they either have absolutely no innate sense of emotion and just fake it(sociopathy) or they switch it on and off(psychopathy)

  • @Bunni89
    @Bunni89 Před rokem +7

    Excellent analysis of how Dusks are a great introduction to Nobodies, by being a walking contradiction, haha! Honestly the design and animations being so utterly at odds is a great development choice. It's subtly setting up the fact that Nobodies break expected rules or norms of character animation, while also setting up like.. a deliberate false impression of the Nobodies, to match how Sora might be seeing them before discovering the more sympathetic Organization members later on. Dusks just entirely look like "some emotionless minion", they look like "a human, but Less and Wrong", they look restrained, they look like something so scary it has to be restrained, they look like something so strong it can defy it's restraints entirely- all in all, extremely ominous and intimidating for a first enemy, unlike the Heartless who started off with a simple cute Shadow. It's also interesting that their design is one of the most humanoid, the one that looks most like it's inhuman aspects are just a costume it's wearing. Honestly it's design has a closer resemblance to the Soldier Heartless, so it's subconciously communicating these are starting at a higher level than their equivelant.
    But then of course none of this is actually true, they're pretty weak, they're one of the most inhumanoid in terms of animations, and honestly they're kinda damn cute! Once you look past the first impression you can see there's a lot to love about them, and then being frequent enemies right up until the endgame gives them almost a homey and nostalgic feeling. Further hammered in by their role then being replaced by the far more efficient and terrifying Sorcerers who take all their animation traits and destroy all the expectations you had built up. It's all so great! True proof that the animation in a game can enhance its story and atmosphere!

      Also it made me be all "yay" when the Dusks reappeared again in that one ending cutscene where they're all dancing in the glow of xemnas's fake Kingdom Hearts, like it's a big ol' wiggle party! Like ok, it maybe made the scene a little less intimidating because I was all "aww cute", but the game just wouldn't be complete without it! Top 10 moments that make you eternally endeared to a videogame monster

  • @UltravioletNomad
    @UltravioletNomad Před rokem +6

    So the Dusk are interesting because while they are the general troop and are therefore commanded by Xemnas, they are also controlled by Roxas and Xion. And this is actually perfectly demonstrated by Twilight Thorn, a boss encountered in Roxas's dive to heart and therefore an internal representation of him, using it's head like the dusk, the thorns like Xemnas, and heavily featuring the reversal mechanic of both. This is because Roxas and Sora are both foils to Xemnas, the reversal command being a reciprocating action as Sora and Xemnas repeatedly reverse on each other. Though one difference is that the Dusk controlled by Roxas are more protective and defensive, wrapping themselves around Hayner to take the blow for him, but really their paced but quick movements, spinning, and backflips perfectly match Sora's base moveset in KH2. The dusk has the least adornment, but because the head is locked it shows the most focus and determination. All four characters are having this struggle of identity but pushing forward for answers, the core focus of Re:COM, Days, and KH2.
    And this isn't the first time KH did this, Darkside is encountered at the beginning during Sora's dive to heart and is later used to separate Sora from Donald and Goofy at the end, and is also reflected in the Dark Figure wielded by Seeker of Darkness and Riku. Both the Darkside and Dark Figure represent a willful separation from friends, as well as an internal prison; be it the opening and ending of 1, Riku in KH2, or Terra throughout the series. Ultimately KH1 is about separation from seeking other worlds, growing distant, which is eventually reflected in Xehanort himself, who also set out from Destiny island and lost friends along the way.

  • @Bunni89
    @Bunni89 Před rokem +4

    Oooh, excellent catch that the Dusk's head stays level! I always wondered why the idle animation felt so unique and subtly incorrect to physics and stuff, when they're just standing there. But it's definitely the fact that each individual body part seems to be kinda running its own different animation cycle, and just sorta stretching and squishing to connect together. Like you have the head barely moving, the chest seemingly growing and shrinking from the sheer force of how much it's moving, and the two arms each stretching more or less than each other. While the legs are just chilling out doing a relatively normal thing and completely ignoring any rule that they should also be rising when the torso does.
    It makes me imagine it must have taken SO much work to recreate this kind of "guy who's drawn wrong" aesthetic for the animation, using a solid rigged model. There must have been so much care and attention put into every frame, and delaying each body part's movement just enough to be subconciously odd. Truly, you're giving me even more appreciation of the game as a masterpiece!

    • @Bunni89
      @Bunni89 Před rokem +2

      It's very interesting how the Dusk's animations all kind of roll with the idea of "head moves separately" in different ways! Like we have the sheer creepyness created by JUST walking normally but the head doesn't move. And then the entirely opposite terror of the head basically dragging along the entire body behind it like a cape! Honestly the squiggly snake flying animation is one of the most iconic in the game to me. It really hammers home the idea that Nobodies are human shaped but with nothing human inside. It's completely iconic as a kind of more efficient mode of transportation this kind of creature might think up if it doesn't have to bother with the limitations of how legs work.
      Honestly that could sum it up! The Dusk kinda animates like it's just a head with a bunch of accessories dangling off. It's animations always lead with the head doing the actual movement, and the limbs doing completely illogical things that are like they're... I dunno.. trying to catch up? It's like it's only moving it's arms and legs to try and mimic how humans move, and getting it completely wrong. And then when things get more desperate it just completely gives up and goes full snakemode, forgetting it's legs even exist.
      So if we could sum up the Dusk's implied personality from this? Maybe they're signifying it be a newborn/inexperienced Nobody by having it focus so much on mimicking it's memories of being human, while also acting the least human out of everyone when it's pushed to the brink. It shows that it really can't remember that stuff as well as it thinks it can, it signifies a loss of identity and becoming just a puppet of the ones controlling it. But still, the fact it tries so hard to keep acting human despite sucking at it, that shows that it's still got a bit of free will and individuality deep down. Whereas the stronger Nobodies all either succeed better at acting human or break the rules even more and abandon humanity entirely.
      I dunno! Just a theory! I guess we'll never truly know the intentions of the animators behind all these choices. We just know that they're SUPER AWESOME and your videos telling us all about them are so amazing!!!!!

    Oh no!!! I never even noticed the lines on the Sorcerer were zippers!!! Oh my god that's such an on-the-nose metaphor for being "Dusks, but with even more of their sense of identity destroyed by Xemnas"
    Definitely another case of the bad resolution of the original PS2 hiding very important details! This entirely recontextualizes the Sorcerer for me, I take back everything I said about them seeming more personalityless. I just assumed that had line markings instead of a face, but them being literally TRAPPED in their own heckin.. Xemnas styled coat.. oh god all the pieces were right there, it was The Saddest Metaphor all along! In that context everything about their animations instead reads as "guy desperately struggling to get out, has absolutely no clue what is even happening, doesn't even know who they're fighting". Ohhhhh god that is genuinely extremely upsetting, I want to give every Sorcerer a hug!!!
    It makes me wonder if the cubes are even actually its own attack? Like, is it throwing out it's overpowered hell attacks and extreme protective barriers because it's terrified and all it knows is "SOMETHING is attacking me, I don't know where" and like.. the magic is the only way it can even affect the outside world at all? HAS THIS POOR CREATURE EVER SEEN THE SUN? was it BORN into this Nobody form? Was it's last memory being human and then just... Your life is now eternally in darkness as your terrifying boss throws you out against Some Kind Of Enemy over and over, to be cannon fodder until you die? Or the even sadder interpretation is what if the squares are just Xemnas remotely attacking you. What if the entire Sorcerer simply exists to be a scapegoat puppet, a vessel through which he can do remote distance attacks. That would be the ultimate terrifying irony, that it can never see again but he can see through it. And use it as a damage sponge to distract Sora while he fights him, and this poor thing just spends the whole fight desperately trying to escape...
    I never thought a bad PS2 resolution issue would make me heckin cry! Thank you so much for your amazing animation insight giving us more insight into the story too, whoa!!!

    • @Bunni89
      @Bunni89 Před rokem +3

      The body itself barely moving, having no connection whatsoever to the attacks, entirely attacking only through the blocks.. yeah damn it's worrisome how plausible this theory is. I wonder if it was intentional? Having an ambiguity between whether a thing is genuinely attacking you or its just an innocent victim being controlled, but either way you HAVE to fight back and kill it... That's some extreme level horror there. If that was indeed what was intended, that's a triumph of game design and animation working in unison! And all those triumphant powers are being used entirely to create The Saddest Scenario Of All Time. Considering they first start appearing in the last world right before fighting Xemnas, having them be a big visual representation of how cruel Xemnas is to his underlings would be very effective at making the player want to kick his ass! (Of course, enhanced even more with poor Axel's death and the tearjerking Roxas fight...)

    Wait whoa the Dusks are ALSO Xemnas's minions??? I always just assumed they were Roxas's minions, cos of how the intro of the game has Dusks being the primary ones in charge of tracking down Roxas and convincing him to come back, and we even directly get one talking to him being all "my liege" and stuff, the only time we ever see a Dusk talk AT ALL so it seemed like "only the master of the Dusks can hear them" would have been a logical explanation for that inconsistancy.
    And then the Dusks being so extremely disorganized and chaotic would have made sense if they were connected to the youngest Organization member, who has at this moment basically Ceased Existing, so you'd imagine the minions left behind would go completely out of control. Their animations would make a lot of sense as the erratic attempts by mentally and emotionally confused demi-humans to remember what on earth they were meant to be doing when they spent their whole life obeying orders and now have no-one to give them.
    Like... A hundred reasons why Roxas = Dusk would make complete sense.
    But nope, the wiki says he rules over the Samurai type. Huh. Was he ever even shown with them AT ALL? And I guess they're just functioning perfectly fine without a leader? Oh well..wasted potential I guess.
