  • Émile Édouard Charles Antoine Zola (2 April 1840 - 29 September 1902) was a French novelist, journalist, playwright, the best-known practitioner of the literary school of naturalism, and an important contributor to the development of theatrical naturalism. He was a major figure in the political liberalization of France and in the exoneration of the falsely accused and convicted army officer Alfred Dreyfus, which is encapsulated in his renowned newspaper opinion headlined J'Accuse…!  Zola was nominated for the first and second Nobel Prize in Literature in 1901 and 1902.

More than a writer, Zola has that powerful journalistic touch in every book and articles he had published .. Germinal is one exemple !

Lovely well researched documentary, lovely pictures, lovely photographs, and then the beautiful Eric Satie music in the background. Bravo! I am again deeply into the Rougon Maquard family series and I wanted to get the feel of Paris 1856 again as I somehow lost it after reading The Kill too long ago. So happily I found you. And as I am an avid reader I immediately subscribed.
I love the way you pronounce the word "rue".
I study art history and you mentioned Fantin Latour, didn't know him, thank you.

Excellent biography- I was keen to learn about his life after reading Therese Raquin- the piece of music at the ending credits- any ideas what it is? It’s so moving.

To me he was the greatest sriter that ever lived. But this documentary fails to mention that he alienated all his (old) friends by writing about them.

His house.. His garden...no mention of any input from his wife. Chances are, she created the house design...planted flowers for the garden for THEIR friends to enjoy?
