John O'Donohue - The Inner Landscape of Beauty

  • No conversation we’ve ever done has been more beloved than this one. This Irish poet, theologian, and philosopher insisted on beauty as a human calling. He had a lifelong fascination with the inner landscape of our lives and with what he called “the invisible world” that is constantly intertwining what we can know and see. This was one of the last interviews he gave before his unexpected death in 2008. But John O’Donohue’s voice and writings continue to bring ancient mystical wisdom to modern confusions and longings. (Original Air Date: February 28, 2005)
    About the Guest:
John O’Donohue was a poet, theologian, and philosopher. He authored several books, including “Anam Ċara,” ”Beauty,” and “To Bless the Space Between Us,” a collection of blessings published posthumously. More recently a new book of conversation with him has been published in the U.K., “Walking on the Pastures of Wonder.” He died on January 4, 2008.

There truly is a place in your soul untouched by any pain or hurt. A place of beauty, strength and peace. - He was the only one able to put into words what we all feel - this place behind all of it. This place most never even realize exists, but we all long for so badly. That loud serene silence, beautiful pain and tears, and this unspeakable untouchable unattainable art around us....

My God this man was a poet because of his ability to continually practice gratitude for the beauty that existed outside himself. The very reason he could identify it so eloquently proves that it was already pre existent within him. So inspiring to listen to such a man

I have listen to this interview dozens of times in the last 4 1/2 years since I first heard it, and I find it wonderfully inspiring, sustaining and gratitude-engendering. Thanks for making it available here for many more people to be touched by John O’Donohue...

I just visited the Burren and was taken back by the utter silence there. My ears were ringing it was so quiet, it felt like being on another planet. I love John's work. When I read his books I usually have very surreal dreams, like they open up a door. Amazing work.

Flat out to one of the most beautiful examples of a druid hidden in plain sight! A magnificent being, who taught the core of connectedness to the divine, using the gift of imbas channeled through spoken arts. ❤🙏🏼❤

Yes Dragon and for me he is like a priest in heart and a Druid in soul. A modern Irish mystic that has left us far to soon. I'll never grasp the magnitude of his compassion and wisdom but it's my ambition to visit his grave in Co.Clare.

O'Donohue said in an interview, "It was a difficult decision, and it did take years to make. I suppose the oxygen had become too scarce. I also found myself diverging from quite a few of the teachings. The final straw was acquiring a new bishop who exhibited and exercised a strong chemical hesitancy to my theological viewpoint. Once made, the decision brought me great peace of heart."
Perhaps, like many, he grew out of his container.
