- Derek Diedricksen has loved tiny homes since he read Lester Walker’s “Tiny Tiny Houses” as a ten year old. It was the same year he built his first “non-fort tiny house” (complete with insulation, electricity, bunk beds), mowing lawns to raise the money for the two-by-fours. [ His book "Microshelters": www.amazon.com/Microshelters-C... ]
Nearly three decades later and he’s still building and has turned his childhood passion into a career. He runs one of the original tiny house blogs (relaxshacks.com), has authored a graphic novel/ DIY instruction manual "Humble Homes, Simple Shacks, Cozy Cottages, Ramshackle Retreats, Funky Forts", hosts tiny house building workshops (his next is Nov 22-23 in Carolina Beach, NC), builds tiny shelters/treehouses for clients and even raps about the genre (e.g. in his music video Lollipop Fort of Death).

❣Half way into this I realized his way of building is how birds build their nests and how beavers build their houses...and this makes me smile and feel warm all over. ❣ Thank you for another wonderful episode, Kirsten. 💕
Kirsten, I 've been watching many of your videos lately, and have been following your channel for a few years now. The thing that stands out is that homeowners are shown as personalities, it's not just about the house, or its design. This documentary-style video you make for us is truly to be appreciated. They aren't fast, bright or filled with music, which gives us the chance to really soak in the details and atmosphere. I enjoy your work and what you bring to this world. Thank you from your viewer in Latvia!
Look how long ago this was filmed... Ms. Kirsten is so before our times... We are very fortunate indeed...
He is probably a select few that truly understands and lives HIS life at the fullest. Real inspiration that guy. Thats what I call an Intelligent man.
I agree
💗💗💗
Marc Fournier he’s brilliant!
He has extra intelligence
I hope Deek reads still here. I find it so wonderful that whole video, and in all of his own videos, his eyes are positively smiling. I could see how his wife would get a little annoyed with having him a million projects on the go, but that's life with a creative mind! And really, his personality is so endearing, how could you not love the guy! I also loved how he encourages his kids to build their own projects... no "bubble wrapped kids" there! Have you ever considered teaching kids? I bet you'd be really encouraging of their creative visions. Keep going, Deek! I wish I had your brain!
I think he teaches the cub scouts and boy scouts.
Deek is awesome! I've been watching his channel for a long time now. I'm glad you did an extended episode for him. He deserves it.
Derek DEEKS ~ I am saving this to show my Grandson JonJon. He is nine years old. A few years ago he literally built a shack' from pallets, furnished it. It has been torn down now, but I would like him to see that he is talented and that he can continue to be creative this way. [I, too, am a secret architect geek - still creative but past my prime]. I have been trolling the internet and xfinity for a few years now, for tiny living spaces ideas. Your work is genius.
I so appreciate how he recycles and makes usable structures.
Most inspiring best 44+ minutes spent in a long time.
Great personality. He should have a show on HGTV. Very creative nerd.
fast forward a few years a he did! he's the host of tiny house nation i think
The more the exposure it seems, the more they want to charge for things.
This guy not only got building skills but also a good drawing hand, very nice
Dude, I don't think you realize what a genius you are.
I wish you a long and happy life.
Take care, stay safe
O. P. ( Olde Phart )
and have more kids. the world really really needs more people like you.
he's so much fun to watch doing his dream job and living his life to the fullest haha interestingly different and crazy in so many good ways. somehow i feel envious. may you have more years to live and may there be more people of your kind.
He's already teaching the next generation.
Deek. You are like laughter in a bottle. EVERY time I watch you or listen to you, I have to giggle. It's just pure glee, man. We are all so lucky to know you. The world is a better place cuz o' you. Hammer away.
dear sir, You have a beautiful mind, never let anyone medicate you:)
thankyou for sharing:)
This Adderall is killing me.
I love that you mention your drawings are from not paying attention in class..lol..just because kids don't follow the norm, does not mean they are not brilliant. You are a role model for those kids that also love to dream..great job, and Thank you for posting this video, I will be playing this video for my grandchildren..
cant help but feel motivated and inspired listening to derek, such a cool guy
this guy is so cool! I hope he never takes medication, I love him!
Kirsten, I love your mini documentaries about quirky buildings which in my eyes is just as much about the quirky people who build them..
I have avoided Deek's videos because his high energy bothered me so much, but now I'm hooked. Now, I get him and am so glad you posted this, Kirsten.
He’s a super hero. A role model for coming generations.
Just watched. Now buying all your books.
This is my favorite episode made by Ms. KIRSTEN, I like the simplicity of the house and yeah the dude is so talented. He can make an imagination turn to reality. I love also the music it's so cool. 😎
Favorite youtube channels collide!!! I've really enjoyed the content on both of your channels for a quite a while now. It's awesome seeing you two sharing ideas. And Deek, it's nice getting more of your background story to fill in some of the gaps. Keep up the good work, both of you!
And I loved this: "I work hard for my money and life's finite.I don't want to work too hard for it, so I don't want to piss it away on stupid things." This could be my life motto, haha.
God ,finally a "tiny-house builder" who doesn't take himself so seriously..
Also [i must edit] the BEST ever designs in my opinion man !
Deek Diedricksen! I've done a Tumbleweed workshop that this guy helped to teach. Super chill, awesome to talk with
thanks Jon! which city was it??
Derek Diedricksen the only Canadian one.. Toronto!
Hey, randomly chanced upon your comment here +Jon Moore - thanks for cluing me in this is the same Deek! I remember sitting beside you at that workshop. Awesome! And you did a great job presenting at that workshop +Derek Diedricksen, thanks. I'm still dreaming and visioning, have not built anything yet, but looking forward to when I get to unleash this area of creativity!
I really enjoyed this video you did a great job on it. I liked that you spent enough time with the person to get the true essence of who he is as a builder and thinker when it comes to building and designing. He's on a good path and he is lucky to have such a supportive wife. I wish them well, some would say he's living the dream.
MacGyver with tools and scraps. Love this guy and his life!
I loved seeing some of his creations! I have seen him before in many videos. It was fun to get to know more about him!! :)
The obsessed mind gets to actualize = pure bliss. I wish I lived closer to this guy!!
I'm a sixteen year old girl that drinks Starbucks and watches Joey graceffa but this channel is what truly brings me happiness haha. Call it my guilty pleasure....I just love seeing all the creativity.
Great video; I really enjoyed it! I have been watching Deek's videos for a couple of years and love them! He has such a creative mind.
and finally they meet... 2 of my favorite youtube people..and their names sound the same too lol... deek diedrickson and kirsten dirksen...
lol me too. they seem to have the largest following on here. deek is awesome though.
you must exhaust people who try to keep up with you. You need a secretary to get down all your ideas while following you around, running all the while. It's exhausting watching your video. Never stop!!! I admire your energy. Go Deek!!!
That was the best interview of your collection. THANKSGIVING
You are a true artist, living your passion! Thanks for the inspiration, Derek. From a fellow artist, inventor, teacher. ;)
So great to see Deek in his own back yard and learn more about him. He's always posting his own videos about other people or stuff he's made for other people. Thanks for this.
bloody brilliant!!!!!!!!! i dont feel so alone in this world now!!!!
Creative Genius! Inspiring! You should be the poster guy for ADD! Mcgyver. You talking my language. All your sketchings that you saved & created. Do you know how awesome that is? Extraordinary guy & you have passed that on to your offspring. I really enjoyed watching this. Makes me want to go & make something.
As always, nice to see you Deek. I enjoyed seeing this side of you - how you build, your workshop, etc. Kirsten, I love your videos, they are always spot on, up to date and in the know. Thank you for sharing and caring!
I love Deek and this was a one of the best video's I seen of him and his masterpieces. Great editing and photography and sound. You a real professional! Thanks so much!

The inner light showing thru! Come on out! Great & brilliant shit, I can't believe you're not on every magazine cover! Dude! Keep crankin! Thanks!
Great work Derek! May God bless you to live to 200 and get all your projects done. You figured it out and I hope you continue to enjoy the journey.
25:47 - The tiny house "movement" is definitely not a fad nor recent. In fact, humans have lived in tiny houses for damn near the entire history of humanity. Big houses will eventually be viewed as temporary, short-lived shelters.
Yes. Even in France, where they prefer traditional stuff and are stubborn, they really favor small domiciles. Easier to manage, heat, maintain, pay taxes on, et c. A large family in a one-room stone cottage is the norm. Six or more people. Apartments as small as possible.
Derek, I fell reservedly in love with you until I saw the Mondrian floor covering. Then, you had apiece of my heart, forever! Keep the good things coming.
such a creative guy.
thanks for sharing this.
This is unbelievably aweSOME! Kirsten- many thanks for all the work you do bringing these original thinking, lateral position loving, fun instigating, out of the box people who build stuff and think stuff and say stuff and sing stuff that inspires. You, and they, are the world's frontier of FUN.
