- With 150 trees sprouting across 5 floors of terraces, balconies, and roof gardens, apartment complex "25 Verde" rises like a giant treehouse, a forest-building ecosystem combining geothermal energy, water reuse, and natural cooling.
The 63-unit building’s design continues the arboreal theme, with wooden shingles and steel supports that look like tree trunks. In addition to cleaning the air around the building, the trees dampen noise pollution, provide shade, and help regulate the building’s temperature.
The 200 trees (150 on the building + 50 in the courtyard) produce upwards of 150,000 liters of oxygen per hour during daylight hours and absorb almost 200,000 liters of carbon dioxide during nighttime hours.
Water is captured on the roof gardens and run down to the ground level forming a large pond that adds ambiance and a cooling factor in summer. The building's heating and cooling systems make use of geothermal energy, using heat pumps and an old well used by a 1950s Fiat factory at the same location.
Corten steel trees support much of the structure and serve as conduits for rainwater and greywater. Architect Luciano Pia modeled these on the majestic old Platanus trees in Turin. His mixed structure of architecture and plants is a unique work of biotecture that reimagines how we can live in cities. 25 Verde resident Paolo Botto gives us a tour of the building.

The truth is that while these buildings look "green". It takes a whole lot of steel and concrete to support the weight of the trees. That being said, I'm sure it's enjoyable to live in.
It's beautiful but like it was already said it's very expensive to build and maintain. The only real sustainable way is demographic control in the end....

EVERY urban multi-family building could be designed this way and save cities (& citizens) huge amounts of money, GHG emissions and oil/gas use. Plus, with the indoor/outdoor access, the mental stability and sheer joy! Bravo!!

Yet - As policy and urban design systems begin to reflect the true necessities of EE/RE and CO2 Sequestration trading markets (no, I'm not fond of those either, D!) in climate mitigation, we could begin seeing these and similarly efficient designs at work across a broad spectrum of multi-family dwellings. Passive House multi-family Architects like Chris Benedict in NYC offer some promising moves in this direction. In Oakland, we're beginning to see public and np space designs from Designing Justice inch further this way, particularly in the arena of recently proposed Restorative Justice centers here. ...just dreaming it into being with Kirsten, in a continual scan of the design horizon, really. ;)

@Lorenzo Maria Martini Yep! This soultion helps with pollution in cities as many parks were destroyed. Parks were created originally within cities long ago as older generations knew the benefits of nature. In the 80s..greedy people were destroying parks for more buildings.

Humans were never meant to live in dense highly populated gray cities. And yet that's what the elites want for us all
@@EagleArrow It's help with pollution would be pretty marginal, even if half the buildings in a city were like this. The majority of oxygen production and carbon sequestering comes from algae in the ocean, like 70% I believe. The formation of algae actually caused an ice age because it had no competition and took so much of the carbon the planet went through a rapid cooling

Not an HVAC person at all, but I appreciate it too. A building may look beautiful, but without strong structural components such as HVAC or plumbing, it’s just another pretty face. The systems do the heavy lifting.

That kind of green design also mitigates the 'heat sink' effect of a large city. Every apartment has nice access and views of green spaces, even the guy on the bottom floor. Would love to see what those penthouses are like.

I thought the steel trees were genius. To have decorative and functional structural support beams turned into sculpture that does not detract from the trees is thinking outside the box. A lot cheaper, too.

Would LOVE to live in this place! The trees, the greenery, the animals, the efficiency, the THICK WALLS (which equals QUIET), but you're still close to the city center....what's not to love?

Forward thinking architecture such as this deserves to become the gold standard of high density housing to which all other types are compared. This juxtaposition of nature and human habitation clearly leads to a healthier environment and happier people.
Love it! If only we could see more of these types of structures being constructed… It’s a great idea for greening the city, and provides habitat for wildlife to shelter and live… really cool 👍😃

Kirsten your work continues to amaze me. Love the way you edit things and the shots you take are so well thought out. I have a few questions about this intriguing place. Is is just for the ultra wealthy? Do they have some sort of covenants in place so that a new owner can't move in and start cutting/changing things they don't like? I grew up in a very unique island consisting of six families but as new people moved in they started to build and destroy and it changed the historical components of what made that island unique. I wish it could have been preserved.
At 4:10 the guy said that if any tree dies, it has to be replaced with the same species. I guess they have got restrictions on what any owner is allowed to do.

I can't imagine how much it costs to build like this, but would love to live there
Probably not as much as we think. Those steel beams are left bare and the added tree shaped decorative elements would not be expensive. Instead of synthetic insulation panels they used enclosed brick chambers. The most expensive part of this building would be the mechanics in the basement. Using green energy pays for itself in the long run. I can't remember if there are solar panels on some of the roof sections. I could easily see solar 'trees' used that would not look out of place strategically placed on the roof. This is a real eye-opener to future urban design.
The most expensive aspect here I think, is all the unused space. They could probably have built way more units on that lot. Depending on the price of the lot etc.
@@hvah that always seems to be the trade off- build more units and make it denser, or leave room for trees and green space to grow. So many cities and municipalities are definititly willing to sacrifice the trees for more apartments. I'm glad this one didnt

I hope for two things happening: 1) one day I gonna be in an a financial positions to afford buying something so cool, 2) or maybe environmental friendly housing gonna get cheaper and more popular and more people gonna be able to get in this kind on environment that is amazing to see and so functional to live in!
Exactly my thoughts on this kind of approach becoming cheaper and more widely available, because even though they didn't discuss costs on the video, it is pretty obvious that this is expensive.
It just blows my mind how people can't see the value of trees and some even choose to remove them as soon as they get a chance. "I hate sweeping the leaves", "it cracks the sidewalk", "those pesky bugs". And then all of a sudden you get yourself a scorched neighbourhood completely devoid of trees, hot as hell, not a shadow to be seen. You tear down a wall or a whole house, in two or three months it can be rebuilt. You cut down a tree, it's gonna be decades or even centuries until a new one gets to the same size.

This is, without a doubt, the most brilliant urban, multifamily residential design I've ever seen. The thought and creativity that went into this is mind blowing. I'd buy their design and build them all over Canada, if I could (weather permitting)!!!
This was the most fantastic example I have ever seen of a multi unit building! What a joy to live there and be in the city and surrounded by all those trees! I was really hoping to see the penthouses on top though. They looked so amazing.

What an amazing place to live. And a great concept. Would love to know what the apartments sell for. You find the most interesting stories. I remember you once commented that perhaps if you had a channel that focused on one thing you would probably have more subscribers - hard to say. But in the end what's wonderful about yours for us the viewers, is that we never know what wonderful story you're going to tell us next because they are all so different. Most other channels have some variation of the same thing, not too many surprises. But with yours, it's not only good quality content, but you actually learn something different every single time. Looks very cool and has awesome spaces, and if they use food producing plants, it would also be very practical.
A food forest is an amazing concept if the residents are committed to harvesting. If fruit is left though, it would fall and rot on the inaccessible parts of this building's structure and the ground and bring in rats from all around.

Make some gardening a requirement of application. How great of a community it would build, that residents in the morning and afternoon would congregate and gather food. Yes have a few experienced people to orchestrate the whole thing.

Yes to this. I also see that. There’s a bit of Gaudí also, and a bit of Fallingwater, and a deconstructivist vibe that is not as scary as the Centre Pompidou (150 trees help.)

I used to live on the 3rd floor in a complex that had a stream and trees running through the middle of the compound and our balcony looked out to the trees. It was absolutely lovely and I enjoyed it immensely. This is such a magnification of that, it's exquisite...

One of the best pieces of architecture I've seen
Very happy of the provided habitat for the animals. As awesome as this building is, the wilderness will always trump the city, every time. Would have loved this development to incorporate more of the edible species of trees, then again, they could potentially require more maintenance. Truly a more serene corner in the concrete prison we all know as the city.
All new buildings should be required to be built like this, also providing an ecosystem for all of nature, not just us humans. It would make us much healthier and happier.

The climate in Detroit is pretty harsh. Do you think Turin might be considerably more mild & thus they can get away with things we here in the Great Lakes can not? For instance it was 3ºF here in Rochester, while it was in the 40s in Turin. It looks like they may be up to 60ºF there this week! Can you imagine!? In January! :P
It would be wonderful for architects around the world to see this and work with the native plants and trees in each area to create spaces for life.
Many of the design features would work for our winters. The thick walls, using wells for heating and cooling, trees for summer heat and air purifiers, etc. Good architecture is universal.
It would be wonderful to take an existing strong structure such as the nearby car factory and use it to support the weight of soil and trees. The extra construction materials to support this weight is the Achilles heel of the new builds which integrate trees into an "eco" structure. With an existing structure that strength is free, so why not use it? This apartment complex is at least not too high so is not as burdened as a green tower and can support the trees in an external metal structure without adding concrete to the main building's mass.
With so many abandoned factory buildings and closed steel mills this might be a good idea since the ground itself is tainted from previous use.
@@samsmom1491 The problem with most multi unit/office buildings is that they're designed with maximum density whereas this building is deliberately built in a modular fashion with large amounts of space between many of units, which explains the availability of space for the tree containers and multiple terraces in all directions. In most cases it's probably easier to clear the ground and start from scratch. So many wonderful ideas here, though.
