Our Broken Tractor - Troubleshooting to get it running

- Time to fix the most frustrating - and potentially only thing we regret - purchase from last summer was this old tractor. It broke down on the trail getting to our property and ultimately led to our old truck lighting on fire leaving us stranded.
Cody is learning every step of the way and figuring things out to get this tractor running again. Having a large piece of equipment will be a huge game changer for our exterior work.

Cody, I admire your work ethics & your willingness to be a “Jack of all trade”.
I love the fact that you’re willing to put life to that tractor.
I know nothing about engines but I was glued to my screen eating my snack and got very excited when it finally “sparked” to life haha wow is that a loud machine! You are doing amazing!
I root for you every time I see one of your videos. You are smart and tenacious and a hard worker. That will serve you well. Keep going! You have a fan!
Cody you should be proud of yourself. Best way to learn sometimes is under fire and working through the systems. This machine will be so valuable once up and running completely.
Glad to see you working on the tractor
I think it's very exciting that you're making some progress on that beast. Think in baby steps and you'll find the way through eventually. Every step is a learning opportunity!
I admire you for buying and working on this tractor. It looks like a beast.
Young Man you have the full respect of my husband Ace and I (Dee). You have got this for sure. With your patience it’s no wonder you got this far. Great job.
Sorry I never asked how the little one is doing. Hope all is well. Give big hugs from me. Love you all✌️🇺🇸❤️❤️❤️
Yes, steering is hydraulic. Your hydraulic oil is pink because it is full of water.
Your doing great Cody! One step at a time, solving each problem one at a time.
Tell Lori I missed seeing an update on her greenhouse this week. Pray your all staying healthy.
Its nice to see all the snow is gone, nice job getting that old thing running. :)
Good luck getting your tractor running Cody
Good patience - congratulations for making progress!
Coil- goes to distributor Coil+ goes to ignition switch. Coil + should only have power when switch is on. Forget about trying to make sure points are open when you shut tractor off not ever going to happen. You're making my brain hurt! Coil is still good just wired wrong. Only time you will get a spark is when points open. You changed your timing when you rotated the distributor. Both screws on carb should be out about 2 1/4 turns
There are a lot of good tutorials on CZcams about how to troubleshoot these old tractors. Should make it a piece of cake to get it running good. In the past I've had several of those old tractors.
If you have a tractor, you have to know how to fix it, so no loss involved, learned a lot and GOOD JOB with sticking to it‼👌💯
Check the points in the distributor that's where the spark comes from. If it has electronic ignition module in the distributor that could be faulty. Check you have the coil wired the right way around this may be why its getting hot. Hope this helps
Your a Flippin Mad Scientist !!! LOL
Love you just keep trying and learning. You guys are awesome
Get a coil with an internal resistor, if your engine does not have a resistor on it some where. The resistor drops the voltage so your coil won't get to hot.
Thanks, good job. ✌🏻👊🏼
Terrific job Cody, great mechanical detective work👏🏻
Burned out ignition coil , might best have a resistor placed ahead of the positive connection, if not internally resisted
That old Ford will be great around your homestead! Congrats on working on her again,
The points close depending were the rotation of the engine is all you have done is through the timing off
Great video Cody and Lori
You can try cleaning the points, resetting the gap, and replacing the condenser. Also check the volts with a meter.
What a challenge! Congratulations on your progress so far.
You will points, condenser button cap under distributor. I can clean contacts on points with a piece of sandpaper
maybe need to set the point gap. Good luck. look forward to these videos.
Your tractor is about as old as me lol
I'm older than the tractor
If those long wires are sparkplug wires they are to long. You need to get the correct lenght. You are not getting enough energy down thru the wires.
You got it going yah yep now hydraulics good going buddy
Please put air in that tire before it pops the tire seal off the rim. Waiting to watch you get through the hydralic puzzle.
Great job getting it going!
Success!!
One step at a time✌️
Nice job Cody! Keep at it.
Way to go Cody!
Good luck hi from Colorado Springs 😀
good job
Good luck. Maybe ask one of the Mitchell’s. They may be able to let you know which way to go. I love that you want to do it but maybe a little help✌️🇺🇸❤️❤️❤️
Also change the condenser in the distributor. When the key is off no power should be going to the distributor so it should not be draining the battery and cooking the coil.
There's a good chance you have a short to ground in the distributor if the coil is getting hot.
Turn the key on and see if the is a spark at the points first
Old ignition system. Did you check the points in the distributor? Also find a good bare bolt or spot on the block itself to ground it against.
What ever happened your timing off now so you will need to turn it till it hits on TDC
Love your channel! How the baby doing???
ok replace the coil and I would new plug and plug wire in and a new starter and new battery and it should start running for you
2 terminals on top are the 12 volt positive and negative. Center post is where the coil sends the juice for the spark. Your testing is all fugged up. There are only a handful of components to fail. How is the coil in the distributor? Opening and closing the power to the coil won't make the plug spark, though. All that does is activate/deactivate the coil.
As for hydraulics there are several O rings in each cylinder and also the control valve..
I have a Ford 3000 and if you have power steering which I think you do, I saw the cylinder you have hydraulic oil in those lines. What happens is you get grooves on the steering shaft and it will leak fluid?
I’ve never ever seen a bad coil but regardless I think you need to look at the condenser and points
Why not get a Ford tractor manual & parts list and troubleshooting , there's got to be one that you could find online and sent to you, just a suggestion
Go check out Dan Gingell and Rachel Gingell, they are experts on the old Ford tractors.
Timing is off Cody. Turn your distributor 👍
That tractor is really old.
read read you have a computer on the model and year of the tractor and just letting you it only work on hard ground
Check your to see if your is overfill and smell like gasoline
Adjust your points.
Hire a mechanic
Why anyone would buy or use a gasoline tractor vs a diesel just confuses me. You are not saving money if its not working or running.
A shot of Either may help.
