The impacts to net worth of paying down student loan debt, buying a house, buying a car, having kids, getting married, getting divorced, etc. are regretable. All of these factors have serious impacts on ones ability to save for retirement. I guess the magic of these kind of assessments is the minimum suggested retirement savings rate. I look at retirement from a bigger net worth perspective, but maybe that's too complicated. Keep it simple--savings rate, age, and income
"If you want a decent pension these days..." you seem to imply that pensioners have been well off in the past! You don't need to stay single and childless to have a pension. What you do need to do is live within your means and that might mean prioritising alternative investments and your pension savings over new cars, holidays, eating out, expensive mobile phone contracts etc etc.
I'm a retired doctor & 5 children by choice. Make sure that your spouse has a job & will have a retirement pension of their own. For me I hired a stock broker to help me manage my investments and has been a resourceful person to my family the last 10 years. I can boast of few million in networth. Feel the pain of discipline early or feel the pain of regret later
