Tom, so you are on a course in Myrtle Beach why don't you play a few holes and film it for us 😉 we would love to see how you handle on course situations
Tom!! Today I got an Albatross on a 500+ Par 5 at my home course!!! Around 220 out into a 13 mph wind, in the left rough, 3 hydrid in hand, hit a buttery draw up the right side of the fairway, all running towards the green and saw the ball bounce a few times before the green and track towards the home and watched the ball just dissappear in the hole! I have a video coming up to the green ill send it to you whats your email
Tom, I really enjoy your videos, but I noticed that they all focus on the full swing. Can you address how your techniques apply to chipping and pitching the ball.
This guy is like the Mr. Rogers of CZcams golf instruction. No BS, great attitude, and feels like your friend just giving you advice. Glad I found this channel.
I’m 56 and a 5 hdcp. I’ve always been a great driver of the ball and great around the greens to score. My irons have been thin and mostly a pull-fade ball flight. I watched your videos for two days and then went to the range. After 1/2 a bucket I started hitting the best irons of my life. This new swing worked with every club in the bag and will take several strokes off my hdcp for sure. Bring on the par 3s!!! Thanks so much for making golf fun and for offering these videos for everyone to enjoy. It really worked for me!
That's awesome, Steven!! I'm very glad to know that this lesson crisped up your irons, and I appreciate you sharing your success with it!! Now that you've had a taste of the crispier than KFC ball striking bliss I've been talking about, I know you are ready for the full buffet. To this end I invite you to check out my online school where you can take your learning - and your game - to the next level. But don't just take my word for it; have a look at the unsolicited testimonials of some of the thousands of folks from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players - who are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks for your message and keep up the great work!! Tom
Tom is such a blast to learn from. he actually said "Take your lead arm out right now, tell me you got one" (hilarious) He teaches spot on lessons. His plain, simple, and entertaining way of teaching will help you learn. It's not overnight but for me, it happened sooner than later I always think his videos are just for me. I hit some practice the other day and I was terrible but I was able to figure out why. I don't keep my lead arm straight all the time but when I do and do all the other things I have learned from Saguto, I hit the ball very well. I hit them so well that I actually get emotional about it because I have never hit the ball like I am now. Always? no, but I am getting more consistent over and over. I am 66, have played all my life and I have never hit the ball like I am now.
As you know I've been monitoring your progress in the online school's forum, Tom, and I'm thrilled for your improvement and the elation you convey so well with regard to those crispy compressed shots that take off like missiles with seemingly no effort. You have definitely embraced the challenge and dedicated yourself to the process, and as a result you are seeing the fruits of your labor beginning to blossom. Thanks again for sharing and keep up the great work!! Tom
I feel ya brother his teachings are simple and methodical , but really effective I’ve been smashing the ball ever since I found his videos, best instructor on CZcams

I was on the range last week practicing my driver. Decided to slow down to the point of absurdity (or so it felt). Felt like I was playing in slow motion. Started hitting my driver 275 straight as an arrow. I was cracking myself up cause just going slow fixed my slice. Very good advice in this video.
That's what happens when we completely rid ourselves of the "hit" instinct and allow the correct sequence to run the motion, Jeremiah. Physics and geometry - properly combined - make for a beautiful, powerful, effortless swing. Nice job!! Tom, you're just too good to be true ! I spent too many years swinging it too hard to get good results. Dropped my handicap another 4 strokes. Thanks for the simplicity ! I've been telling all my friends about your simple approach ! I'm 70 years old and hitting the ball the ball great.
Well, Dean, if your ball striking is too good then this must be true......😎 I sincerely appreciate your kind words, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you. Are you watching me on the course 🤔 Everytime I run into a new problem you have a remedy video a few days later lol. My arms were breaking down getting toe strikes. Thought I was standing to far away but i wasn't. After watching this I was clearly trying to smash it now I'm confident I'm in a great position at the top. Will slòoooow down 😁👍
Yep - I'm out there watching. Always. Watching..... 😎 I'm glad this lesson resonated well with you! It's a great one for conquering the "hit" instinct that plagues so many amateur golfers and irreparably destroys their downswing before it even begins. (And yes - that can absolutely be a cause of toe hits.) Embrace the challenge and have fun out there!! Tom, I had a good range session this afternoon by trying your tips (thanks!) BUT that is not the real reason for this post. In another of your recent videos you didn't gloss over the fact that "it takes some work." That was refreshing. I'm so tired of the barrage of ads by big name instructors with claims close to "this drill will make you scratch after only 10 swings!" Gimme a break guys - it's a tough game and it requires a lot of work to get good. So thanks for acknowledging this!
Indeed, Bob - golf is an exceptionally difficult sport. There is no magic elixir here - no shortcuts, no way for me to climb into someone’s physiological and psychological uniqueness and translate my personal swing feels, thoughts, or triggers into theirs. I can teach folks what the correct motions and prescribed positions are, simplify them, demonstrate their proper execution, and where possible offer various options/”feels” for accomplishing the same desired result, but by design it must ultimately come down to each individual golfer to put in the necessary time to interpret, incorporate, ingrain and, basically, “figure it out” if they are truly going to take ownership of THEIR swing! Embrace the challenge, keep up the great work, and have fun out there! Tom
I’ve always been a good amateur golfer. I played all through middle school and high school at a 4 handicap and went to small college golf at a 2 handicap. Then I watched a clip of Fred Couples telling a guy to count to 3 during his swing and release at 3. I went from very good amateur ball striking to scratch amateur golfer almost immediately. After that tip I began to learn that some shots a player will need to hit just look more intimidating than they are. You may want to give it the juice and you still can… the only thing slowing down is the backswing. Only when you speed up the down stroke your club has less to travel at speed and therefore less to travel off plane. golf is always hard. But sometimes it’s the simple stuff that pushes players over to playing solid golf
I appreciate you sharing your experience, Brad! It's so important to feel the transition in order to suppress the "hit" instinct - which plagues a majority of amateur golfers (the primary audience of this channel) - and get the downswing started in the proper sequence. Slowing things down to discover and ingrain our ideal swing rhythm is an excellent way to accomplish that. This does not mean that we’re going to be slow through the zone as you convey. We are simply dialing in our tempo for grooving the correct path and achieving consistent sweet spot contact (i.e.: maximizing our “smash factor”). Beyond Fred, we can also look to Els, Matsuyama, Cam Young, Morikawa, and others for as very obvious examples. Thanks again for your message! Tom Saguto, PGA
Tom, I like your lessons a lot. I’m a former 2, now an 11, 71 years old and still drive 265 and hit a 7 iron 170. I think you spend a little too much time telling us what not to do. But when you tell us what to do, it’s spot on. I’m in great shape but had a major vision problem that upped my handicap. Working to get back to a 5. Combining your lessons with Hogans easy swing is the ticket for me.
Hi Stanley, I'm very glad to know that my lesson content is resonating well with you! Effective generalized (i.e.: not private/personal) instruction must first specify and address the issue prior to offering the appropriate solution. This allows the viewer to first self-identify with the targeted swing flaw prior to moving ahead with the correction. For example, if the video pertains to a steep downswing but a golfer's path is too shallow, then that lesson would not be of benefit to them and could instead further exacerbate their plight. By the way, a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. If you've not already joined, have you considered enrolling in the online school and taking your learning - and your game - to the next level? That's where - in addition to detailed lessons and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish - you'll find diagnostic tools for identifying/resolving swing and ball flight issues when they arise, plus advanced level courses, and much more. Tom, That's what I was doing yesterday...warm up bucket relaxed and slow up and swing through crushing. Then league starts I would slow up then rush the down swing and I started topping everything or ground it. Thanks for this video I really need to relax more!
We can dial in our ideal tempo through proper practice, but it certainly does take time to transport it to the course. Keep working at it and perhaps even play some practice rounds by yourself without the pressure of league play. You'll get there!! Tom
That’s ME! ☝🏻 … lead arm breaks down on the backswing I’m hitting the X-Golf simulator this morning. This is my swing thought of the day: “Start … Stop” I have to fight the urge to HIT 🙅🏼♂️ Thanks, Tom Great stuff as always 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it, Parski! Yep - that "hit" instinct that plagues so many amateur golfers and irreparably destroys the downswing before it even begins. This lesson should definitely help you in your efforts to overcome it. Keep up the great work! Tom
Easy to follow, simple advice. Something we can all aim to achieve without injuring ourselves (I’m 78). You ignore the current fashion of many coaches, the sort of “diving” into the ball on the downswing. Deadly stuff which to my mind encourages amateurs to hit heavy shots.
I appreciate your kind words, Gavin, and I'm glad to know that my instruction is resonating well with you. Every Senior golfer needs to watch Tom consistently…Simply, go to the range and implement these easy to learn moves!! It’s NOT complicated…Tom is the Best Golf Instructor for any Senior golfer who struggles on the course!!

Thanks again for your support! Tom
No joke - this video and another of yours I watched this morning ("don't just swing your swing...") have resonated SO WELL. I want to hit that sucker. If I just chill the heck out, keep my left arm straight... don't wind up too far... magic... I hit the ball better at the driving range today than ever before. I take group lessons, and the teacher says very similar things. Seeing your video, where I could see your swing over and over 100% convinced me to try to "copy" you today. It worked. Best hits I've ever had. (Picked up my first club in my life one year ago...). I'll be watching all of your videos!!!
That's awesome, James!! It's so important to feel the transition in order to quell the "hit" instinct - which is a natural tendency for most - and get the downswing started in the proper sequence. i've recently joined the online school since i've made so much progress just from these youtube videos. i can't believe it but after 25 years of poor form and inconsistent contact i'm actually striking the ball tons better. i was a sway and throw guy before but couldn't get real good at it and now i'm all in on stack and tilt and saguto golf.
I'm thrilled for your improvement, Brian!! 💪💪 This powerful, consistent, body-friendly swing system is designed to provide a lifetime of blissful ball striking up to and including at the game's most elite levels. Thanks so much for your support in sharing your success, keep up the great work, and enjoy the school!! Tom
Tom you are without a doubt the greatest instructor. This has helped me tremendously. Using this tip, the fast portion of my swing is now just in front of the ball, meaning I'm accelerating through the shot. No more hitting from the top. Crispy KFC
Out of thousands of tips from others over the years this just simplifies and nail’s everything down to where/when the body should move and without thought! including a easily achieved balanced finish. Brilliant it stops all the silly muscles trying to get in on the action at the wrong time- makes me remember K.I.S.S.
Thanks Jim - I appreciate your kind words and I'm glad to know that this lesson resonated well with you! There are two things at play here: 1) Discovering and dialing in our ideal swing tempo, and 2) Feeling that transition - or the change in direction - so we don't rush our downswing from the top and thereby lose our sequencing. Our perfect tempo/rhythm - which is unique to each of us individually - thereby enables us to gather and unload the various components in proper order for seemingly effortless, powerful ball striking bliss. Tom
I'm practicing the ratio between the backswing and downswing. 3:1. Instead of trying to be perfect, my focus this year is on these keys for me: tension, tempo, left shoulder down and not going past my stopping point. The feeling to prevent the last thing is "half swing". It's more but that's what I'm feeling. That might sound like a lot of swing thoughts, but actually this prevents a lot of thoughts. The two main things of these are going shorter in the backswing and shoulder down, especially backswing length. It makes my ball strike infinitely better and means I'm hitting it farther. With the driver and woods the focus is to have loose arms. That improves both my swing speed and ball strike with the driver and woods.
Sounds like you've got a good plan in place, Mattias. Keep up the great work and have fun out there!! wow!! worked so well on the range..allowed me to open my hips whi le i paused/stopped my arms like you want us to...more distance and the ball went off the exact middle of the clubface!! thanks again Tom..ps stack and tilt is amazing..cheers
Awesome!! I'm glad to know that this lesson resonated well with you. Nice job incorporating it into your swing, keep up the great work, and enjoy rekindling your relationship with those vintage Wilson blades!! 💪💪 Tom
Since I have been following your teaching and as a member of your online school, this video ranks as one of your "Creme de la Creme" pieces of advice for any follower of your technique....I watched the vid a few times and, played a round today...I can say that it was some of the most consistent golf I've played in a long time...Just the thought of stopping at the further most point in the turn and and returning the club at that moment has cleared up a lot of "noise" in my golf swing and have kept my wrists from "getting in trouble"...Thanks Tom...
Hi Tony, I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated well with you. Excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play!! 💪💪 Yes - It's so important to feel the transition in order to quell the "hit" instinct - or clear up the "noise" as you say - and get the downswing started in the proper sequence, and a brief pause at the top is an excellent way to accomplish that. Thank for sharing your success with this and keep up the great work!! Tom
@@SagutoGolf One more little ingredient I threw into your mix....A simple count, "One, Two"..."One" for the back swing and, "Two" for the return....Those words combined with your technique has not only given me better contact, I actually picked up 10 or 15 yards on each club...The game becomes easier as long as you follow certain protocols....
Awesome!! I’m very glad to know that the arms straight component is performing well for you, Kevin; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play. I'm 80. The best tips for me are weight forward, and lead shoulder pointing down at the ball on the backswing. Yesterday I began actually hitting some really crisp irons. My consistency needs work; but boy, what a difference from my old "over the top" swing! When you make perfect contact, even with a relaxed easy swing, the ball just takes off like a rocket!
Welcome to the wonderful world of crispy compression, Philip!! Tom! I haven't picked up a golf club since 2012, and I stopped because it hurt my back (also life got in the way). I got frustrated because I felt like so much of it was guesswork. There were so many tips and lessons and things I read that it all became mush in there. Your videos just take all the guesswork out of the swing and make it make sense. I'm eager to get back into the swing of things (pun intended)!

Rushing my swing has ruined my game. I first started playing in the mid 1970s when I was a kid. This was just one of the bad habits I picked up. When I apply this tip I can tell a huge difference. I still miss every now and them, but I'm playing much better! Keep the videos coming!

Tip was gold. Im 57 hdcp of 7. My left shoulder doesn't have flexibility as it used to have. I too was going a bit to far which caused a breakdown of straight lead arm. Don't get me wrong was hitting it great but occasional rushing. By now keeping straight my backswing is a bit shorter but now distance is same to a bit better but best part is much more consistency. One other thing Tom. A past video you mentioned just tilt and all falls into place. That was the other nugget. From start of swing i just tilt and hands and arms get into great position each and everytime. Thanks Brother for all. You teach and keep things extremely simple.

Great video Tom! My shots are getting more crispy daily. Can you talk about tension in the arms. Loose muscles vs tensing up. Thanks for the great advice!
I'm glad to learn of your improvement, Mike. Let me answer your question from the perspective of grip pressure, since that's where many golfers tend to create tension. Grip pressure is something that is very unique to each of us, which is why conveying personal "feels" in this regard have led so many golfers astray. For example, a 2 out of 10 “baby bird” grip to a strong guy like Sam Snead may equate to an 8 out of 10 to another golfer. We definitely don't want that handle swimming around in our hands because we're so loosey goosey that we can't control the clubface. A secure grip and soft arms are what we're after here. That prescription will certainly resonate differently for different folks, but the key is that our grip pressure should give us complete control of the club while not introducing swing-killing tension that prevents us from properly executing the motion and/or robs us of speed potential. Finding that sweet spot is a highly individual thing, and it is critical to consistently blissful ballstriking. I’ve found that with a proper grip and the correct grip size for our hands we can apply a surprising amount of pressure with the arms remaining “soft”. In fact, with my Jumbos I can pretty much clamp down like a vise grip without creating arm tension or inhibiting the wrist hinge. That would not likely be possible if the handle was too small for my fingers. Anyway, grip sizing aside, try firming up your grip to the point where you just begin to feel a tightening sensation activating the forearm muscles, and then dial the firmness back slightly until those forearm muscles return to a supple and passive state. We're not creating tension here; just control, power, and repeatability. Keep up the great work and keep it crispy! Great video mate... just been to the range, just focused on tempo and strike. This was the best session I've had for weeks. 90% of my shots were crispy and my dispersion was great also. Keep em up 🤙🏼🐔

I find that Tom takes a common sense approach to teaching. Whenever I watch one of his instruction videos I end up saying, “Aw yeah, that makes complete sense. Tom keeps it simple. When I practice his lessons I find that my mind is cluttered with several different swing thoughts. Now when I practice I get positive results and that translates into me enjoying my practice sessions. I think Tom is the best golf instructor I have ever encountered. Discovering Tom was the best thing I ever did to improve my game.
I can’t wait to try this, sometimes I slow down my swing and I do hit better, but of course you want to hit it further and harder and YUP that’s when I screw up. Thanks for the tip, heading to the golf course today to practice.
That intense urge to "hit hard" sure does a nice job of throwing our downswing out of sequence (and throwing away all our power), right Marc?? This lesson will help you to suppress that swing-wrecking instinct, and you'll know when you do it correctly because the ball will take off like a missile with seemingly minimal effort. O.M.G.!!! I never thought of that… I recorded my swing the other day and noticed that my arm bends a bit… Then you come out with this video!! I’m definitely going to focus on this when I go to the range!! You have a great way to simplify things.

Great advice Tom. Whenever I consciously start down slowly I hit the ball so much better. One thing that helped me is at the top I take a break for about 5 minutes and drink a cup of coffee and then I go ahead and start down slowly and feel like the swing takes about a minute to complete. It really works!
LOL! I hope it's decaf, Bob. We don't want a twitchy trail shoulder on a caffeine high at the top.... 😬😆 Matsuyama has bene a great one to watch with regard to that deliberate pause. More recently, Cam Young has a very noticeable pause prior to transitioning into a hugely powerful downswing. Keep up the great work!! Ton
Well Done Tom - Tempo is key for me if I get too fast on the back swing or downswing it will mess up my swing. My swing Rhythm closely matches my internal walk speed. My body Rhythm (walk & talk) is generally slower and thus my swing is a bit slower.
Hi Tom, I was out 'practising' on my local course today in Manly, Sydney, Australia; and I struggled again with 'running the red light' and overhitting! Crash landing and frustration. However, that 'stopping point concept' and the 'delayed slowness' you discuss here, and how you actually do it is simply is great stuff. I know that is the solution, albeit hard to do in game time, but persist I shall because I'm sure it is the Holy Grail to Golfing! Tks!!
Oftentimes we can feel things getting out of sequence mid-round, Frank, but it makes for a very difficult patch job on-the-fly. This lesson does indeed have grail-like qualities, particularly if you can dial it in through proper practice at the range and then take it out to the course. 100% changed my game watching your vids tom. I also recommend u to all my friends that ask for help. I do it on my net at home HOWEVER...my problem is when i go play with my friends i try to muscle it to out drive them dam well knowing slower is better. Its a mental struggle for me. But i shot my 1st 81 a few weeks ago. Im normally around no. And slowly creeping and now consistantly in the hi 80s.
I sincerely appreciate your kind words and support, Manny, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating well with you!! There are two things at play here: 1) Discovering and dialing in your ideal swing tempo, and 2) Feeling that transition - or the change in direction - so we don't rush our downswing from the top and thereby lose our sequencing. Our perfect tempo/rhythm thereby enables us to gather and unload the various components in proper order for seemingly effortless, powerful ball striking bliss. Tom, watched this yesterday, and went to the range to practice. Played today, and my only swing thought was stop-start. Shot 11 strokes under my last outing! Thanks!
Even after using your course and watching your videos, I struggle with keeping my lead arm straight. Im working on engraining it in my muscle memory . I have it in my head that i need my club parallel to the ground on the backswing but need to learn that when the lead shoulder is pointing to the ball, that is far enough and dont worry how far back the shaft and head are. Tough to break old habits, thanks for the great tips
Hi David, Those "ghosts of swings past" are indeed stubborn and definitely don't give up without a fight. The key here is get to - but not go beyond - your body's natural stopping point in the backswing where the tilting, turning, and extending motions are complete, the lead arm has crossed the chest 45 degrees, and the wrists are properly set (preferably with a flat or slightly bowed lead wrist). This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur: 1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift 2) the wrists will break down 3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side 4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball 5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight. 6) you'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact 7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury Here is a lesson from the archives on this topic: czcams.com/video/lw5ZHa529Kk/video.html We don't need to try to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting your body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. If you execute this swing properly you will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that will enable you to harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". By the way, you indicate that you've taken my course. Are you referring to the free mini-course? If so, then you are now primed for the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school. On the range today: my usual jerky swing, bad shots, then I remembered master Saguto's advice and slowed my swing ... and instantly the shots became better, much better actually. Not all advices work that well but this one does ... try it!

I just do the start of backswing like Bobby Jones where i slightly drag the club at the beginning with my left arm so i can feel the club head weight at the top and that naturally gives my body the que to start the downswing at the top of the backswing.. kinda feel like pendulum swing when it reaches the top momentum and started to drop down then i can initiate the downswing while also add speed to the downswing.. i never felt like i go over the top anymore and it will always feel easier to shallow to club and i never go outside the line of swing to hit the ball.. So all in all i guess theres the truth to taking the backswing at a slow pace like in this video too so that we can feel exactly when is the time we need to stop at the top of the backswing and then starting the downswing all the way till finishing the swing.. thanks mate 👍👍👍
That's excellent - nice job building that key element into your swing! Hey Tom, that Rahm tip was really helpful for my OTT. I actually moved a little closer to the ball which forced my hands to stay in and keeps my RS from tipping forward. As long as I keep my hands ahead of the ball my striking has really improved. Im actually getting some repeatability now, getting closer buddy! Keep shooting those vids Tex!

Funny how I found this video today. The other day I played, +10 on the front 9. Pull after pull. I could feel my arms out racing my body on the down swing. My only swing thought on the back 9 was to feel like I slowed my arms down. Instantly my strikes were better, shots longer with all clubs. +2 on back and broke 40 for first time this year. Thanks for another easy to understand lesson.

I think slowing down the back swing allows time for the brain to tell your lead arm to make that nice straight stretch correctly. Going to fast in the back swing theirs not really much time to gravitate to this nice form! Thanks Tom, again! 😂🎉😅

yes, the "cross roads" of golf. i'll never forget the look on pete cowan's face when i said to him that the downswing doesn't start until we get into the hitting area. and, it's just as you say: we should have a stop point. but, i don't think we should get to the top and stop, as tommy armour tells us in his book. when we have swung as far back as we can we should keep pushing back with the joint of the left wrist and the lower part of the right arm. the body, and the left side of the right forearm, then react against the left wrist joint and lower part of the right arm. and, really, we first have to work out where the hitting area begins. from a down the line perspective the club moves further on the inside in the start of the downswing. so the force that is directed into the clubhead moves away from the ball in the start of the downswing. then, as the club continues on its arc, the club starts to move towards the ball. and, really, the hitting area can't start until the club starts to move back round. and, it is when the club is at its furthest point away from the ball- from a down the line perspective- that the left hand is to the left side of the club. and, this is key to the release. and, it is at this point that the downswing begins- though a player may not be consciously aware of this, whilst swinging the club.
I understand and do not disagree, particularly with regard to instructing more accomplished players. The only concern as it relates to amateur golfers is that they have a tendency to push back beyond their body's natural stopping point. In doing so any or all of the following can occur: 1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift 2) the wrists will break down 3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side 4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball 5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight. 6) they'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact 7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury Thanks for the detail!
@@SagutoGolf Well, I'm guilty of all those things. But, it is very important for a player to swing within their parameter. And, it is advisable to just swing back to the highest point of elevation. Part of the problem is that many coaches teach players to go for a big turn etc. But, re: 1&2 if the heel pad of the left hand fully extends the left arm will fully extend. In the waggle the heel pad fully extends when a player waggles the club back. So, the waggle is key. Re: 3. If player activates the muscle in the back right of their left calf, at address, it will turn their knee out; and, the knee won't turn in too much in the backswing. Re: 5. Again, the waggle will help. If a player waggles the club correctly it will cock the head to the side. And, if a player establishes heel pad control in the waggle this will stretch the left should joint in its socket, which will make the left side of the head press down slightly, which will ensure the weight is on the left foot at the top.
Just the video I needed Tom! I’ve been playing with a groin strain caused by violently snatching at the ball from the top of the backswing, I feel sure this will help me thank you!

Thanks Tom, sometimes I rush the downswing and it tends to leak to the right. I then have to keep reminding myself to slow down. Been losing a few shots lately.
That's something that affects the vast majority of the golfing world. The key is to recognize its calling sign and nip it in the bud before it wreaks havoc on your round. Here's a related video on this topic: czcams.com/video/oNy1dyEQ2cc/video.html Tom

I love watching your CZcams videos and am certainly considering your classes offered on your website. The one thing I seem to struggle with the most is the change in length of club and how this affects my golf swing. I have a difficult time jumping from, say, a 9 iron straight to a 5 iron without having to regain the "feel." I also tend to slice more as the club length becomes longer. I am extremely happy with everything up to an 8 iron but start to struggle with a 7 or lower. The strange thing is I feel like if I swing "harder" with my hips this seems to somewhat fix my problem as if the centrifical force fixes the problem, but this quickly tires me, even pulling muscles and I'm pretty sure it is an uneccesary fix. I'm not exactly sure what is causing the disruption in my swing. I'm guessing I'm over swinging, bending my right hand or some other disturbance in the force as the club lengthens, but I'm not exactly sure. I would love to hear your feedback about club length and how this affects a novice golf swing as you are so wonderfully concise in your teaching. I feel like it is something small that I am missing. You have improved my golf swing more than anybody so far, and that's just from watching your CZcams videos over the past month. If you address club length in a previous video, please let me know.
I'm very glad to learn of your improvement and appreciate the kind words! Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the longer clubs - which is quite normal early in the swing change process as a golfer gets used to applying the weight-forward concept - it can be attributed to one of the following: 1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the longer clubs as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, inhibiting any further necessary forward weight loading (we should be 80/20 forward halfway down, 90/10 at impact, and 95/5 in the finish), changing the low point and rerouting the club into a steeper angle of attack. This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. Of great importance is keeping your upper torso/head in place (in other words, not moving towards the target from a face-on view) while the hips execute the lateral slide action. This preserves the swing center and the desired shallow AoA. 2) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The shaft length of the longer clubs encourages more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as they take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as they maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around them, it should put them in the proper position at the top so they can attack the ball from the inside. (A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".) I am very confident that the level of step-by-step detail in the online school will help you greatly. I hope to see you there! Tom

I did the 10 second downswing drill and noticed that I shifted my weight on my legs differently than normal, and I ended the swing much more forward on my lead foot than I ever am normally. I am good at hitting the center of my irons, but I don’t take too many divots and when I take one I get a pseudo flyer that goes at least 10 yards further from the good contact.
Those "pseudo flyers" are the result of you compressing the ball, Nick. @@SagutoGolf I have looked at your school. I have a few injuries I’m working on a will check when better. The over the top correction has helped for sure!!
Great presentation, Tom! When I am asked for the two most important items for a successful golf swing, my answers are (1) keep your head in the circle, (2) keep your lead arm straight, from the very beginning up to the release. Question: at the stopping point, which feeling is following? Is it a pushing of the trail arm or a pulling of the lead arm?
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Bernhard, and yes - those are two very good and effective swing keys! I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible because we're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason is why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective. Have you joined yet? Dr. Crisp, I'm struggling with my contact and consistency. I'm 6'5 and grew up a baseball player. I feel because of my height, I have to crowd the ball to make good contact. What do I do? I can feel myself moving all over the place when I swing. If I try to stay shallow and bring the club around me body, I end up topping it or worse. I feel like my height could be an advantage with club speed, I just can't get crispy contact. When I put my weight fwd, it's even worse. This is a defcon 1 situation... one day I'll hit my driver well, the next time it's the irons. What am I doing wrong? I was a homeowner hitter in baseball, now I struggle to just get a base hit. I hope you like the baseball analogy! Stay crispy!

😅😊😂😂😂😊😂😊😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😅😂😂😂😂😂

Tom is such a blast to learn from. he actually said "Take your lead arm out right now, tell me you got one" (hilarious)
He teaches spot on lessons. His plain, simple, and entertaining way of teaching will help you learn. It's not overnight but for me, it happened sooner than later
I always think his videos are just for me.

Nice job!!

Same here I use to slice I slowed my swing down and now can hit 290 to 275 sometimes 300 and only slicing about 5 % of the time with my diver
Tom, you're just too good to be true ! I spent too many years swinging it too hard to get good results. Dropped my handicap another 4 strokes. Thanks for the simplicity ! I've been telling all my friends about your simple approach ! I'm 70 years old and hitting the ball the ball great.
Well, Dean, if your ball striking is too good then this must be true......😎

Yep - I'm out there watching. Always. Watching..... 😎

Hi Stanley,
I'm very glad to know that my lesson content is resonating well with you!
Tom, That's what I was doing yesterday...warm up bucket relaxed and slow up and swing through crushing. Then league starts I would slow up then rush the down swing and I started topping everything or ground it. Thanks for this video I really need to relax more!
We can dial in our ideal tempo through proper practice, but it certainly does take time to transport it to the course. Keep working at it and perhaps even play some practice rounds by yourself without the pressure of league play. You'll get there!!

I have to fight the urge to HIT 🙅🏼♂️
Thanks, Tom
Great stuff as always 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it, Parski!

Easy to follow, simple advice. Something we can all aim to achieve without injuring ourselves (I’m 78). You ignore the current fashion of many coaches, the sort of “diving” into the ball on the downswing. Deadly stuff which to my mind encourages amateurs to hit heavy shots.

No joke - this video and another of yours I watched this morning ("don't just swing your swing...") have resonated SO WELL. I want to hit that sucker. I take group lessons, and the teacher says very similar things. Seeing your video, where I could see your swing over and over 100% convinced me to try to "copy" you today. It worked. Best hits I've ever had. (Picked up my first club in my life one year ago...).

i've recently joined the online school since i've made so much progress just from these youtube videos. i can't believe it but after 25 years of poor form and inconsistent contact i'm actually striking the ball tons better. i was a sway and throw guy before but couldn't get real good at it and now i'm all in on stack and tilt and saguto golf.
I'm thrilled for your improvement, Brian!! 💪💪
This powerful, consistent, body-friendly swing system is designed to provide a lifetime of blissful ball striking up to and including at the game's most elite levels.
Crispy KFC
That is precisely the desired and optimal outcome! Excellent job!! 💪💪

Keep up the great work and have fun out there!!

wow!! worked so well on the range..allowed me to open my hips whi le i paused/stopped my arms like you want us to...more distance and the ball went off the exact middle of the clubface!! thanks again Tom..ps stack and tilt is amazing..cheers
ps...was even able to put my 1988/staff blades back in the bag..talk about crispy!
Awesome!! I'm glad to know that this lesson resonated well with you. Nice job incorporating it into your swing, keep up the great work, and enjoy rekindling your relationship with those vintage Wilson blades!! 💪💪

Hi Tony,
I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated well with you. Excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play!! 💪💪
Yes - It's so important to feel the transition in order to quell the "hit" instinct - or clear up the "noise" as you say - and get the downswing started in the proper sequence, and a brief pause at the top is an excellent way to accomplish that.
Yes, the arm stayingcstraight has helped my swing dramatically.

That's fabulous, John! I'm very glad to know that this tempo lesson resonated with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play. Indeed, it is so important to feel the transition in order to suppress the "hit" instinct - which plagues a majority of amateur golfers - and get the downswing started in the proper sequence. Slowing things down to discover and ingrain our ideal swing rhythm is an excellent way to accomplish that. This does not mean that we’re going to be slow through the zone. We are simply dialing in our tempo for grooving the correct path and achieving consistent sweet spot contact (i.e.: maximizing our “smash factor”). Think in terms of Els, Couples, Matsuyama, Cam Young, Morikawa, for example.
Thanks so much for sharing your improvement and keep up the great work!!

Awesome stuff!! I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating well with you, and I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to share your ball striking improvement.
This body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance swing system is designed to provide a lifetime of enjoyment for all golfers, and since it is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.

Matsuyama has bene a great one to watch with regard to that deliberate pause.
Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it, Bruce.
Yes - we all have our ideal tempo. The key is in finding it and then dialing it in.
One of your best lessons ever! Thank you.
Thanks Cuck - I'm glad to know that you enjoyed it!!

Hi Tom, I was out 'practising' on my local course today in Manly, Sydney, Australia; and I struggled again with 'running the red light' and overhitting! Crash landing and frustration. However, that 'stopping point concept' and the 'delayed slowness' you discuss here, and how you actually do it is
simply is great stuff.

Hi David,
Those "ghosts of swings past" are indeed stubborn and definitely don't give up without a fight. The key here is get to - but not go beyond - your body's natural stopping point in the backswing where the tilting, turning, and extending motions are complete, the lead arm has crossed the chest 45 degrees, and the wrists are properly set (preferably with a flat or slightly bowed lead wrist). This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur:
1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift
2) the wrists will break down
3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side
4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball
5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight.
6) you'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact
7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury
Here is a lesson from the archives on this topic: czcams.com/video/lw5ZHa529Kk/video.html
We don't need to try to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting your body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. If you execute this swing properly you will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that will enable you to harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum".

Really really helpful. Thanks again Tom. Love the channel👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
There are two things at play here: 1) Discovering and dialing in your ideal swing tempo, and 2) Feeling that transition - or the change in direction - so we don't rush our downswing from the top and thereby lose our sequencing.
Thanks for sharing your progress in this regard, and keep up the great work!!

Keep shooting those vids Tex!

good stuff......slowing down the swing and letting the club do its thing is key and can help choose the right club for the distance involved 👍

Proper sequencing is vital to the powerful and seemingly effortless motion that yields truly crispy ball striking bliss, Thomas. Nice job figuring that out mid-round!!

In doing so any or all of the following can occur:
1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift
2) the wrists will break down
3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side
4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball
5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight.
6) they'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact
7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury
Thanks for the detail!

Here's a related video on this topic: czcams.com/video/oNy1dyEQ2cc/video.html

Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the longer clubs - which is quite normal early in the swing change process as a golfer gets used to applying the weight-forward concept - it can be attributed to one of the following:
1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact.
(A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".)
I am very confident that the level of step-by-step detail in the online school will help you greatly.

That's the "crispy" stuff that I'm regularly referring to.💪💪

@@SagutoGolf Thank you very much, Tom, for the detailed response!
Great video Tom. Trying to swing your hands down on a string slows you down as well (your last video) Really helpful
Glad you enjoyed it, David, and yes - it does mesh nicely with the string lesson.
Embrace the challenge and have fun out there!!
