I've noticed that many people want to find out where to take an adult beginner ballet class in their city. I want to start consolidating a master list of recommendations. Do you have any adult beginner ballet classes that you enjoy? Please share!
We started this list as a way for people to find studios near them. We only add places that people have suggested to us because they have personally had experience there, and update as often as possible as we get new suggestions. ballerinasbynight.blogspot.com/p/find-studio_1.html
Thank you for this wonderful resource!
Thanks, have added mine on there!
Michelle Ortega
I just stared a wonderful adult ballet class in Dallas, Texas at CONTEMPORARY BALLET that takes adult ballet seriously and I love it!
I'm from Turkey / Ankara! And here I have amazing courses of Kent Dans Studios in Ümitköy. I think it has the best adult beginner classes and teachers!! I suggest it!
wow!! I started at 43. Still goin strong at 63
whoa! that's awesome! :)
Do you have a blog or someplace online you post about your life and fulfilling your dreams? There is a huge need for inspiring adults. I know I personally grew up being to I have to wait till I grow up and move out to fulfill most of my dreams, and then I crossed over into adulthood to find out it was expected that I would start my dreams as a child and then grow out of them.
That's wonderful! I'm curious how you feel ballet has affected your fitness and overall health through the years.
Michelle Ortega so am I!
She's amazing!!!!! I love seeing adults being taken seriously. I want to find a place like this.
Im in north east texas, close to lawton, oklahoma. Where are you?
this is so great, thank you for this video !!!
so do i
I hope that you can find a place in your area. In the meantime, you might want to check out some at home ballet dvds or online how to videos. Not as great as taking an actual class, but something to get you started until you find something.
Definitely I'm doing so at the moment. Here in Pennsylvania most don't technically have most my needs met plus still living under athourity it's hard. But I'm not giving up ballet I came this far now
I love her commitment to teaching adults. So few ballet teachers share her attitude. For a lot of instructors, adults are just chopped liver, taken for granted and definitely not as respected as the little kids, which is sad because we're in ballet because we want to be and we pay our own money to do this thing.
that is so true Linda... I take adult classes and am very blessed to have a very dedicated teacher as well who treats us no different than the advanced/pre-professional students she works with. I always marvel myself at the adult students. We have full time, demanding jobs, family, obligations and we still find time to go to class after a long day's work.
Linda Harrison
Yes, it is a HUGE commitment. I think in that way, we are MORE dedicated than the youngsters. All they have to do is go to school and dance, but we have the whole gamut of obligations. I think adults should get exemplary treatment! :-P Of course, I am biased. Towards myself.
+Linda Harrison No you're completely right 😊😶👍
Linda Harrison I agree but I still am educated as I go
My ballet teacher is 85 years old and still going strong 😂
L KK OMG! 😱
This woman is truly inspirational. You can see that she really genuinely cares about her students. The ballet world can be so elitist, it's heartwarming to see a person so welcoming to older people starting ballet and the way she teaches the class is amazing, the way she manages to cater to every individuals needs whilst still teaching a professional style class is incredible. Kudos to her.
this touched me, because i started doing modern 3 years ago and taking ballet classes 1 year ago. I was first unsure to start dancing at the age of 21, but it has become a huge part of my life and I couldn't be happier.
Saaaaame, when I did dance at school the teacher took me aside specially to give me a little talk because I was so awful. I started taking commercial classes 3 years ago at 28 and I have done 10 hours a week ever since. It's definitely never too late if you find the right environment!
I teach serious adult classes too! I have produced several awesome adult dancers who never danced as a child. I love those classes!! I love my adults!
North Georgia School of Dance I wish I could learn with you and I'm 25
I am so grateful for this video. I am 47 and just started an adult ballet class in my small town. Right now I am the only person in the class and was starting to feel as if I was being silly to have taken on so difficult an activity at my age. I am enjoying myself and learning to control my muscles and had no intention of giving up. However, this gave me the added encouragement to relax into my classes.
+DaveandAmy AbelWyman there is an amazing community of adult ballet dancers on instagram Like you, many of us started later in life and are on the same journey... I hope you are enjoying but if you use hashtag adultballet or adult ballerina, you will find all of us. :)
Absolutley love this! I'm only 17 and it's always been my dream to do Ballet. All the beginner ballet classes in the studios around my area are all filled with girls around 11 or 12. I feel like I would be so embaressed being the oldest in the class but hopefully I can get past that. I'm really thinking of starting soon.
Go for it! You're still young enough to start.
You totally should! Just ignore the girls and as you progress you can move up!
You may even turn out to be good friends with the girls and you could provide a good example for them
The more I watch ballet... The more I'd like to do it...
I'm a retired professional dancer, hang out my slippers almost 20 yrs ago and I'm seriously considering to start training again.
This is wonderful! I always loved to dance but unfortunately my parents could never afford dance classes as a child... It's good to know that it's never too late and that people like Kathy make it possible:)
It makes me so happy to see these men dancing :)
What a wonderful, inspiration, Kathy Mata is, to teach ballet from 16-80 years young. I've always felt ballet is for ALL people, and know looking at this All ages. It's never too late to begin again, until you're 6ft under! Forty years after I had to give ballet up, as I was not "PERFECT," it's made me think again. But I've always found the basic barre work, useful for to use for my whole body, and mind, and you can do it at home, slowly! I hope this gives faith and hope to everyone.
What a beautiful story Catherine Blair , thanks for sharing it on G+. I wish more schools offered adult classes as well, and teach seriously like she does. It should never be about being perfect, but each dancer being able to learn and improve and to just enjoy the music and the flow.
Catherine Blair what you just said , gives me hope. I'm 34 now, and i still plan to take adult beginner's ballet class when i move.
Fantastic!!!
It really is an inspiration, even for young adults. I'm 20 & I have been dancing since I was about 3/4, as I got older my body type (DDD chest) started to get in the way & I stopped dancing at 18 because I became discouraged & insecure about my body type. All the other girls who danced had flat chests & didnt have to wear 3 sports bras over their bra just to keep their chest from bouncing & their stomachs were super flat but everyday I am gaining more confidence & seeing all these young women & men of all different body shapes is inspiring and I won't let anything get in the way of my love for dance. I was also afraid to go back to dance, thinking it was too late for me to start back up. But not anymore! I can't wait to enroll in some adult ballet & jazz classes 😄
John actually has dancer legs! Way to go!
Ballet is great for all ages. I'm glad there are so many studios offering ballet to adults.
Think it is brilliant, they all are so wonderful within their limits. Me too, I do ballet still at the age of 64. I did ballet at 13 till age 16 and returned at the age of 34. It is hard when your much older. Just done Advance One RAD, doing RAD Intermediate March 2015, that is a lot easier to do than Advance One. I already have British Ballet Organisation up to a high grade. Think it is great to achieve what you can whilst you can still do ballet for everyone. Keep up the good work everyone, your doing great. She is a lovely caring teacher.
Wish she lived here near me. She is wonderful. I'm 47 and would LOVE to start adult ballet classes. What an encouragement these people are. Just wonderful.
DefenderOfTheLarder me too I'm 56
What I love is there isn't just younger women, there are men AND women. Both old AND young. That is a beautiful thing! Thank you so much for bringing this into people's lives.
I LOVE HER! she's great!... a serious teacher, but great at her job and doesn't make you feel intimidated, but you know that you can trust her, because she keeps you on task. AMAZING.
God how I wish I lived in america to go to these classes!
Do it where you are. Find an “ally” and organise classes together!
God this is so inspiring. I'm 23 and was pre-professional until I quit (STUPID ME) at age 14, and I haven't taken regular ballet classes in a very long time, and I feel I'm just hopeless and I'll never be able to dance well again, and certainly not en pointe, and to see this is just...wow. I wish I didn't live an hour and a half from San Francisco because I would so love to go here.
I currently take Adult Ballet Class in Columbia, SC and I LOVE IT! There is a different demeanor that is involved in the class. No one cares if you have been doing it for a long period of time or how old you are. Its a great workout and I have a wonderful time. My instructor is younger but is respectful and likes the fact that she is teaching us.
This lady has got a great setup over there. What an opportunity for those that just want to learn something of the art. We have adult beginning where I live and the instruction is very good. We do not however, do anything in the way of an actual choreographed performance. Its too bad as dancers that I am in class with are very good and would love to do something like that. In fact I have never once heard anybody in the 2 studios I take classes in, ever mention doing anything along those lines. Students in this lady's class are extremely lucky in that they get to feel what its like to take what they know and actually perform it in front of an audience. This is a chance to experience something that most of us adult dancers will never/ever get to do.
there is no bad student only bad teacher. she's amazing👏🏼
Well done. This has inspired me to start our own Adult Ballet at our studio. I love the meaning behind this. Every age should be able to feel music and experience and enjoy such a wonderful form of art.
That's wonderful, Sydney. There are a lot of people seeking classes!
I LOVE THIS! YES! Just because we are adults doesn't mean we don't love to dance, and this is an art for everyone (male and female), kids and adults!
Can't wait to get back into my adult classes. They have great variety where I live and I started at 22 and even worked up to trying pointe. They teach us very structured but still treat us like adults. It's a great mix and I've gotten so much better over the past several years.
Bravo to the older guy who made it on Pointe!!
Stop encouraging it, or you going to experience what I experienced - 70 years old grandpa who came to the classes in pink leotard. Trust me - you do not want to see that!
OK that is ridiculous and something I'd not want to see. But why shouldn't I congratulate a guy ( who did not wear pink tights) who gave enough of an effort to get on Pointe?
John Loring
SImple. Because just like leotards, pointe shoes are exclusively designed for women. Guys wear ballet shoes, ballerinas wear pointe shoes. That's ballet. Period.
PaidPal Times are changing. Pointe for males is getting more popular. But that doesn't mean they should dress like ballerinas.
John Loring Times are changing indeed. Hipster guys are wearing tights and leather bag-purses, now you mentioned about pointe shoes getting popular among guys. You let the freakshow begin once, and the next thing you'll see is the hairy guy trying to lift his leg up wearing leo only. What makes you believe it won't happen?
I'm coming from the place where political correctness is not recognized, and as such, I'll stick to traditional values.
This is a wonderful class and an inspiring teacher! The students are beautiful dancers. I fortunately have a teacher as inspiring as Kathy. I started Adult Ballet at 51 and will be 55 this year. I had started with another studio, but it did not teach technique, and I broke my foot! So you must be careful, 6 months later I started with Holt Ballet Conservatory, Yelana Holt is the teacher. She is an awesome woman, 64 years old and still on pointe. Beautiful lady. Most of my fellow dancers are young, 8-18... But there are some that are 20, 30, 60 and one 70, I do not care if they are younger, it is wonderful to dance with them. We support each other. It is a lovely culture. I am working toward pointe, even if I don't dance a lot, I want to achieve it. We also have the opportunity to perform. Mrs. Holt is very careful that you don't hurt yourself and will not let you go on point until you are ready. Turn out and strength in your foot and ankle. I know I am fortunate to have this school, I believe my teacher is a treasure. Her studio is in Nevada City, Ca if anyone is near.
So im 18, still living at home due to college and all that jazz, and typical little girl, I have ALWAYS wanted to do ballet. Since I wasn't able to, at 8 years old I started joining little dance clubs and it was fun. But it'd never be ballet you know? And now that college is more laid back with schedules, I've been searching around, but I can't seem to find an adult class that has good prices...and I don't know what to do. I just want to fulfill my dream of someday going on pointe.
And can she move down to San Diego?! She's amazing! So cute, and helpful and fun hahahha
there's probably an adult ballet class in San Diego.
I hope you find something, Ana. "Ballerinas By Night" czcams.com/users/youtendu might be a good resource for ya.
I am a ballerina and ballet teacher for beginners adults in Brazil, and I love to teach them. It makes me feel happy and grateful...
That's wonderful, Camis! I love hearing about classes from around the globe. I'm sure your students really appreciate you.
I finally started at 15 and this is so inspiring because at one pointe (see what I did there lol) I thought I was too old. :)
True. This is a very inspirational video.I love the way the teacher encourage her students and how they follow her.
OMG!!! Listening to all these older and elderly men really inspire me! I'm only 23 and will be starting beginning ballet at my community college soon and this really give me that push to go outside of my comfort zone! I'm excited and can't wait! I love how this instructor is so caring, passionate and understanding! So glad I stumble upon this video! :)
What a beautiful teacher. Wow I would feel so cheerful after having a class with her and calling my name. Plus she's teaching amazingly too.
Glad that the first gentleman who spoke stumbled across this class. What negative, slightly horrible comments he received from others. This class looks great. Big thumbs up to them all and the instructor for setting up the class :D
I feel so relaxed after watching this vid.
I feel as though I can walk right in and feel comfortable.
She is a very awesome instructor.
😋
I've been teaching Ballet to adults at the U of PA for many years and it is very
validating to see a kindred spirit...I figured I couldn't be the only one but it is rewarding to watch someone approach adults with the same positive energy and intention that I try to maintain in my classes. I would love to meet her and take her class!
Great work. You´re never too old to dance!
Bravo to the students... And a special bravo to the teacher.. She's the key role to this whole effort..!
I'm doing ballet for 1 year in adults (although I'm 17) and I love it, I have always wanted to do ballet, so finally my dream come true. I'm really excited about every lesson and in our school is also possibility to do pointe for adults, which is very motivating and inspiring for me!
Maybe this video should be titled "Adult Non-Professional Ballet", because several of these dancers do not look like beginners. Plus it states that she has all levels in her class.
+calisongbird well they're not professional dancers either way. They pay the teacher. They're not getting payed.
+Francesca Pessarelli yes, I'm aware they're not getting paid. My point was that the title say "Adult Beginner Ballet," but they're clearly not beginners.
What a wonderful teacher! She truly is a beautiful person.
Taking adult ballet. Recital on May 16 and 17. May 22 I turn 40 and my daughter graduates from HS. I would move to take a daily class. This is inspired and inspirational.
I took my first (adult) beginner ballet class today after 25+ years of being away from dance/performing. I loved it. Our class was a wide range of ages and skill levels, but the lesson was amazing and I can't wait to go back. This film was awesome !!!! Thanks so much for posting it. I'm even more inspired :)
I fell 30 feet off of a cliff 4 months and broke my hip socket in two places. I've always wanted to learn ballet and now that I'm learning to walk again I want to start!
Alicia Spivey then you should once you've healed
I think some light ballet classes could be very beneficial to you
That mature pas de deux at the end - magnificent.
And the work including all abilities - marvellous .
Truly inspirational. I am so happy that Ballet is open to adults at any age, shape and size. Kathy is just wonderful- and I make this assumption just by watching this video. Fortunately, I was able to find an adult ballet class in Southern California. At first, I was embarrassed to go back to ballet because of my age and the fact that I was 50lbs lighter when I was younger. But, having instructors like Kathy and instructors like the one I go to, make you feel that anything is possible. I've gotten my dance spark thanks to institutions like these.
Faith in humanity restored.
Oh! This popped up on my feed and I am reminded of how much I miss that studio. I worked the front desk about 12 years ago and took Kathy’s class every now and again - I’m so amazed by her energy and spirit!
I miss it too!
I started adding beginner ballet workouts to my regime because I noticed in the last year that I've begun to slouch. My work also causes me to hunch over a med dispensing cart and when I use the touch screen at the cart, my whole body stiffens up. I am constantly trying to straighten myself up and I've found that by doing some of these dancing workouts that my balance and posture has improved and being more conscious of how I stand and hold myself. I am over 40, so it's never too late to start. I don't know if I will ever join some classes, but at least I'm trying and I find ballet to be more and more intriguing and I appreciate it as I learn about it. TFS this! :)
I am just some guy on the internet, but she looks like an outstanding teacher, if only there were more like her!
This is so encouraging to me. I have always wanted to dance but been too afraid. This just shows you can start anytime.
What an AMAZING and inspiring instructor!
What an incredible documentary! I was touched to tears!
Oh, I just LOVE this! Took ballet as a child but was more into gymnastics and did more of that... I have been falling in love with ballet these days as I have been watching pro dancers online and would love to take it up again for fitness and enjoyment...I just turned 60 and and restarting my weight loss and fitness journey....Thank you for the inspiration!!!
They all are so good! And passionate! I danced in an adult class, but because they were dancing together for many years I wasn't even taught the basics. I don't even know what to do with the arms after one year of class. Its great that they are learning the technique like this from the beginning.
amazing. This makes me want to dance again. I danced as a child and a teenager!!! I love the comraderie of dancing in a class, with others.
So wish I lived in San Francisco!! I would absolutely love to be a part of that community. What a wonderful thing that this teacher is providing.
Beautiful documentary, human body such an art form even at an advanced age. Well done to the male participants!
Amazing video! I have also started ballet at 52 yo and I am still going despite having ostheoarthritis and fibromyalgia, I find dancing the best medicine!
If anyone reads this and knows Kathy please tell her how much she touched my heart just seeying this video. She has pieces of God in her, she is like... so full of love and just so serious in believing in people like God is.
I cant believe how many people are in your class, its really great to see
This is so amazing. As an adult beginner myself who is embarking upon a professional career, I struggle to find studios and instructors like her who care as much as she does. Bravo Kathy Mata!
I know nothing about ballet, except for watching Nutcracket every year! 😂 But, I have to say, I have enjoyed the Troupe so much! ❤ I have partial paralysis and watching the work, the joy, the graceful moves and the pleasure on their faces... it made me realize that we are never to old to follow our passions and dreams, that movement (exercise) doesn't have to be boring, that movement makes us feel better and that joy can be found everywhere! Thank you so much for the honor of seeing your hard work and the joy on your faces - it means so much. Don't let anyone every tell you differently! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Fantastic and amazing. What a hell of a good time. I love how all levels are dancing together!
what a wonderful woman this teacher. Respect to her! inspiring video thanks for sharing!!!
i took an adult ballet clss a year ago i was the oldest fattest girl and it was not in english. i loved it so much and miss it.
THIS is amazing, ballet is for all people! This is the kind of ballet instructor I aspire to be Kathy you're an amazing example and I hope to take your class one day!
This is wonderful! I teach an adult ballet class and they are the most inspiring people! They are great to teach, and really want to learn.
May God bless the program. I myself am 39 and studying ballet. Though I did begin to study in my early 20's, it is still in my system to learn. As long as I am able to do the moves I will always dance.
I love the fact that this class has a wide variety of people( experienced or inexperienced) I hope to join a class like this one day
this is absolutely wonderful. I have always loved dance but never had the chance to study as a child. Shows it is never too late
finally, a teacher who doesn't mind teaching adults who also love to dance and ballet. It is my offering to God to do Ballet, and not compromise because of my age.
This is so beautiful. I danced for almost 9 years when I was younger and I would really love to get back into it someday when I have the time. So inspiring!
I would LOVE to take an adult ballet class. : ) Dancing is something I love very much and miss very much.
Kaitlyn Keely Go for it! It will make you so happy
What a wonderful woman. This has really inspired me to keep looking for the right ballet school for me!
Maravilloso, soy profesora de danzas y hace unos años decidí comenzar a dar clases a adultos iniciales en Rosario, Argentina... es una experiencia hermosa para mi y para mis "chicas" !!! :) nunca es tarde para bailar!!!!!!!
This is wonderful. I love her. We need more people that make it easy for older people to do what they love...dance. God/ Goddess bless her heart and make her business thrive.
Absolutely loved it! ❤ it's so inspiring! Such a wonderful creative, sensitive and skillful teacher! And dedicated intelligent students! It all is just so incredibly fun and creativity! And hard work, of course ❤ Love to all of you, beautiful people!❤❤❤❤❤ Best wishes and steady progress!
This teacher seems so good!
Thank You kathy for believing in people
What a wonderful teatcher, she realy loves her job, and she is so sweet to all her dancers. I wish I could be there, b ut I am to old now, so I have joy just to watch this video. Thanks for posting this.
This is fabulous!! I wish there was a class like this where I live. Im pretty sure the studio here would look at people like they were nuts if they were over 105 lbs and over 20 years old. Sad but true. This is so inspirational and beautiful!!
Late in coming, but this is fantastic !!!. Thanks so much for presenting this. I hope this inspires, town, cities with serious dance studios to follow this lead. Artistry doesn't stop at 30, this benefits community well being, and yes, those studios/ companies concerned with$ to survive, it is a win win situation for all, as long as the students of ALL AGES are respected. 💜💜💜
I started dancing when I was young for several years but stopped. I picked up adult ballet 6 years ago and never looked back. There's a 60 year old lady in my class who broke her foot from a jump before but that didn't deter her from wanting to come back to class again. Ballet is not just for those limber perfect body, it's an art form for everyone. Its all about working with your limitations!
What a wonderful teacher, so inspiring :)
What an amazing group, and fantastic teacher. Inspirational!
This seriously made me misty! Kathy Mata is amazing!
One of the best videos I've watched in a long time!
As a first year student in my own hometown dance school, I found this inspiring as well. Thank you for sharing
Wow! I am 21 and I'm about to start teaching my first adult class! this woman is such an amazing teacher and it was really helpful to watch!
this is absolutely inspiring, and the instructor is amazing, I wish I lived closer to the center to take her class, love it.
This is so wonderful! I wish there was a class like this near me. It is encouraging though - to see others step out and try something new, and do well!
What a wonderful teacher she is :) makes me wish i could do that too
What a beautiful video! Brought tears into my eyes! :)
Beautiful! Lovely teacher, lovely students!! Who cares about age if you are enjoying yourself. I just started ballet at 45 ;). I'm having a blast!
can I just say again: What a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful woman Kathy is. She just... Wauw she amazes me so much. Love her.
