Nestled in the idyllic area known as Happy Valley lies the town of State College and the home of Penn State University. For over 40 years, Joe Paterno was the celebrated head coach of the school's storied football team. Lauded not only for his program's success on the field, but also for students’ achievements in the classroom, Paterno was a revered figure in a town where team loyalty approached nationalistic fervor. Then in November 2011 everything changed when longtime assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with 40 counts of child sex abuse, setting off a firestorm of accusations about who failed to protect the children of Happy Valley. Filmed over the course of the year after Sandusky’s arrest as key players agreed to share their stories, HAPPY VALLEY deconstructs the story we think we know to uncover a much more complicated and tragic tale.
People are normally very capable of reporting criminal offences to the police when it's outside the workplace. But for some reason when it's _inside_ the workplace, people think all they have to do is tell their superiors.

Exactly. And that’s what this all comes down to. Because Joe and others failed to notify the police, several more children had their lives decimated by sexual abuse. They will suffer for the rest of their lives with the fallout from that trauma.

This is a flat out incredible film
Words can't express the terrible, horrible, unhuman things that happened in "Happy Valley" . And somehow the NCAA thinks its acceptable to shorten the sanctions on this program. Those kids will suffer for the rest of their lives, but I guess the football fans up there that enabled this deserve to be happy.What a crock!
How in the hell could you possibly say that the fans or even the players were to blame for this?!?! They were in just as much shock as the rest of the world when they found out what happened.
Hey, don't let me stop you from enjoying your football games buddy! But do your part and make sure no more kids get raped at your school.

To punish 20 year old kids who play football for Penn State that weren't even around during this time is terrible. This is beyond football. And the law and the courts have taken care of the punishment. Let the innocent play the game as it was intended for them to play it. And not be punished for what a criminal child molester did, that they had nothing to do with.

Literally just finished watching this documentary as I type this.
Would love to have a debate with the guy who was protesting the statue. I disagree with some of his views, but I would have caught him off guard and given him a hug instead of screaming. I know a logical conversation may have been futile, but verbally attacking him just furthers his conviction. Appreciate the cops who helped diffuse the situation! 🚔👮♂️🤝🙌👏

His pedophile “father” adopted him so he could have easy access to him to sexually abuse. He picked a boy with a troubled home life and preyed on him all to get off. And his “mother” disowned him when he had the courage to speak up about it. I wouldn’t acknowledge those two as parents anymore either. I hope hell exists.

You're right. It was a horrible, detestable thing that happened. And the criminal is behind bars. In a justice system, justice is punishing those who have committed a crime. In order to uphold the justice system, It is important to make sure that the correct people are being punished. This was no longer the case in happy valley, so the sanctions were rightfully lifted. Not to mention the new revelation that the NCAA had no authority to impose such sanctions in the first place.

A hero would go to police to expose the fact that little children were being sexually abused by a dangerous predator. A hero wouldn’t have stayed quiet, allowing several other children endure the life-altering trauma of sexual abuse.
