- Cobra Style Serve by Yurie Nabeya | Craziest Serve in Volleyball History. Yurie Nabeya (鍋谷 友理枝, Nabeya Yurie, born 15 December 1993) is a Japanese female volleyball player. She played in the 2016 Summer Olympics. She is part of the Japan women's national volleyball team. She participated at the 2015 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix, and the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix. On club level she played for Denso Airybees in 2015.
She has a very interesting way of performing the service. During the serve, she sets her right hand so that it looks like a Cobra. Many call her service one of the craziest serves in volleyball history. Her service was therefore named Cobra Style Serve.

When I first played volleyball, I wasn't able to serve with upper hand. My coach taught me the cobra style serve and from then on I could serve over consistently. My teammates always laugh at the cobra hand but I know how powerful it is. Now my coach taught me another serving method, the ball went faster now :) My coach really taught me so well...I know I had a lot to learn since I played from scratch while my teammates all had experience but his 1 to 1 coaching is really effective

Her genuine excitement makes this 100 times better!!
the glasses, the serve, the sport; she has everything to be an anime protagonist. can't wait to see her nemesis
Nabeya is incredibly smart, the cobra style allows her to aim the target accurately. Flexy hand makes the ball floating but the trajectory is under control. Even the jump before to serve is not too high with her hand in line with and slightly over the top of the ball to keep controlling the trajectory, but she takes a little risk when she kicks the ball pivoting her hand which makes her target unreadable, not too much strength added but she varies targets from corners to very middle between the lines, lethal weapon
this gives very "best friend character explaining nabeya's tactics" (defo has background music while explaining)
@@worldofeverlastingdreams7461 lol not everything has to be wth animes
Can someone explain to me how a professional womens volleyball team cannot return these "ace" serves? Like for tennis or baseball I can 100% understand the incredible speed involved and only professionals could return those. But these "ace" serves are... so slow? Not very much power either. How are all these professional players so destroyed/confused by a slow serve?
@@bltnbros122 nobody said it did
@@SyenPie essentially, the ball looks much different when you're actually on the court. because of how it was served, the ball has no predictable path. "slow" serves are what you'd call a floater, there's no telling where the ball may go, and it's even more challenging when it hugs the line. and the same for mens professional teams. from an audiences pov, it doesn't look like it'll be a service ace, but it's much different on the court. Hope this helped :)
the way it barely spins at all as it flies is insane

@@SamuelRomero-tl6xr magic of knuckleballs* multiple other sports have the same phenomenon
@@blakebailey23 knuckle ball is always hard to catch
@@blakebailey23 called a float in volleyball, don’t know why there’s a difference but that’s just how it is
basing off of how it was described and shown in the manga, this is probably how Miya atsumu’s float serve looks like (minus the approach haha). It was kind of hard to imagine how Miya’s float serve was shown to be ‘fast’ or ‘i blinked and or was on the other side of the court’ because it’s a float serve; it floats in the air so how could it be faster than the usual float serves that it gave nishinoya a hard time? but seeing her do it is pretty cool and gives me a rough idea on how it would actually look like 😅 gg author
if i gotta guess, atsumu's float serve focuses on speed rather than precision, which sounds like a downside, until you realise he's so good with his float serve precision wise (he's shown to aim really accurately, albeit not as well as his jump serve) that his speed is his advantage
whereas for yamaguchi's serve which focuses on precision. but ofc, i could definitely be wrong since i don't play much volleyball :d
What does spin have to do with speed? When it’s a top spin the ball drops fast and when it’s a bottom spin the ball remains in the air for longer. You can still do both fast, like how they do in table tennis. Only limitation there is would be the court boundaries.
I can see a snake background behind her and when the ball going to the other side, the movement also accompanied by a sliding snake randomly moving.
And all Karasuno members shockingly stunned by that serve ace.
I once played against a college girl that served like this. Wasnt expecting such movement literally received the ball with my face. A nice save indeed lol
Nice to meet you scott sterling
Totally believable story
I had a floater rise on me in high school as libero, and my instinct was to sort of uncoil and strike it with my head. It became sort of a joke and my team had a jacket made for me that said "Cobra". Ironic, now, after seeing this video.
@@timmoliterno9239 i play as a gk in soccer and i've seen many knuckleballs but never expected to see em in volleyball. Well, receiving a knuckleball in the head at least is "good" in both sports lol
@@OnlyMisery float serves are tricky to receive and hitting it w some other part of your body other than ur forearms/hands happens quite often. It ain’t that hard to believe leon’s story lol
0:30 I lost it when the commentator started hissing 😂
and the serve happens to be an ace as well. perfect timing all together
Good serves and a great player. Seeing the opposing team struggling to receive the serve is like an accomplishment in itself. It shows that your serving is crazy good.
That's so sick, Nabeya's serves are awesome! Makes me want to try and receive one lol.
Float serves are unpredictable even when served by the very best players. Sometimes you can receive them and you think in your head, "ha, what an easy serve", other times the ball does absolutely crazy stuff and you don't even touch it before it hits the ground and even the best players in the world look like it's their first time on the court.
I also once played volleyball when i was in high school and float serve are the most annoying serve to receive, sometimes you wouldn’t even know where the ball would go or lands.
It almost feels like a cheap tactic
@@cal_2000 yeah, like there’s a player who’s a pain in the ass for every team when we’re still in high school and he’s so good with this float serve but what makes it even more difficult is that it’s short like he always want the setter to receive it and sometimes he really pulled it off specially if they panic.
Righttt, as a libero i fell pain in the ass when the opposite team using this serve. I would choose against a powerful spike serve rather than float. We can predict the point on spike serve, but we cant do that on float.
Yes! I hate them lol

ROLLING THUNDER STRIKE! AGAIN!
Im not sure about other countries but in Japan, a lot of schools have their players master the floater before any other serve so that might explain why they are so good at it
Well, they don't have the size to pull off the jump serve so.
@@mirieshii1948 Yeah they do. Height hardly matters to do a jumpserve. I mean at a high level it matters but if you have a good jumpserve it's always going to be higher and faster than an overhand (if it's good obviously)
@@narnianninja4964 there's a reason why there's not many short jump servers.
Nabeya is such a good server, if I had to go against her and her team i would've cried
Spectacular serve!
Involving more technique than "strength" (speed).
This style of strategic looting is beautiful for beginners like me. I hope to one day reach the same level.
Mostly she gets points by having players waste time wondering why she’s doing the weird thing with her hand and weird body language by scrunching shoulders in and then coming out with a hard, fast, short/deep serve. There are plenty of players out there with theatrics before their serve, mounting tension by taking a long time and staring down their opponents
Also known in sport psychology as a self-paced routine. You'll see it a lot in intermediate to pro level athletes because it's a way to get themselves under control. Take for example free throws and golf. They do that too. It's not just to annoy the opponents, even though sometimes that's the outcome. It's basically a focus technique.
Sure Sherlock Holmes, you think players with highest skill set and concentratrion actually pay attention or get distracted by that?
Called mind games.
Oh really? How about you try this and record the result for us? Maybe this channel will make a dedicated video just for you
