    What is a hybrid studio setup and how does it work? Mitch Gallagher talks with hybrid enthusiast and Sweetwater Sales Engineer Chris Finton about how to easy it can be to enhance your DAW-based studio with outboard analog gear! Analog gear doesn‘t have to break the bank, and outboard options such as channel strips, EQ modules, and compressors offer up a much more visceral experience when it comes time to mix, master, and record! Watch Mitch and Chris tweak an old Sweetwater jingle using some of Chris‘s favorite outboard gear as they tell you everything you need to know to get started with a hybrid setup of your own. Check it out!

      thanks for this video Sweetwater! can you please make a video on OUTPUT levels from DAW => outboard gear ( in terms of db)
      its important that we do not send a signal thats too hot into sensitive outboard gear (especially with tubes)....
      there is hardly anything on youtube on this, so this would be a valuable learning experience for many home studio musicians as they start using outboard gear....
      pls address
      1) db level needed from daw => outboard gear
      2) any difference between solid state vs tube gear in this regard (if any)

    I still record on tape. I had already bought ART's Pro VLA II, and liked it so much for mic inputs/recording and then bought another just for mixing/mastering so I wouldn't have to repatch. Your doing the classic idea that there is Analog and software and that's what hybrid is however using digital gear and software is also hybrid. For example if I plug My Novation Peak into My laptop and use My DAW, I'm now using a hybrid set up.

    • @bobgulian1858
      @bobgulian1858 Před rokem

      I think the idea is more running a digital signal through an DAC to some analog hardware then back through a ADC to the computer. Your Peak is really exactly what an audio interface is in a hybrid setup. It sends a digital signal to the computer and can also send an analog signal out to an amp or powered speakers. I guess you could even mix through it so the hybridness would be in the Peak itself.

    • @cultivatedmind8352
      @cultivatedmind8352 Před 6 měsíci

      Only if everything is mixed in mono or you mix entirely on your right speaker. A "mix buss" or your final output routes to a stereo signal, or a left and right channel giving the whole image of the song. If you send one output only to channel 2 on the VLA, you'll be missing any panning, stereo spreading, stereo reverbs and chunks of your midi instruments or wide mic'd instruments. The left channel will be gone from your monitors when you play it back. So you'd have to mix the song entirely on the right side or possibly in mono if you wanted the split the Pro vla between a mic and stereo buss processor.

    That said for people on a tight budget DO NOT waste money on compressors go for high end pres, mic and interface. That's the three pieces that makes your life so much easier.

      I acutally would say... acoustic treatment is far more important. I'd rather use a cheap condenser and interface in a well treated room, than if you gave me a TF-251 and a Neve in someone's untreated bedroom.

  • @adsertheblade
    @adsertheblade Před rokem +1

    If you want to sell analog gear, don't go with "easy", there is nothing easier than selecting all the channels in your DAW of choice and loading and inserting a strip on them all at the same time. Those strips, or eq's or compressors, or whatever they are will be permanently there, no need to print them, easy to change anything you want whenever you want.
    Now, is mixing hybrid easier than YOU THOUGHT? Maybe, depends how hard you thought it was. By comparison to plugins, it's a pain in the ass, let's not say otherwise.
    A more compelling question is: what kind of different results can you get going hybrid? What are the sonic benefits that out-weight the trouble it causes?
    BTW, saying "it's fun" won't convince anyone to buy a Tube Tech.

    Is a converter necessary to use when sending analog signal yo your daw?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  Před rokem +1

      Hi Lalocura, thanks for the question! You absolutely need a converter to get an analog signal into your DAW, or out of it for that matter. Even the sound coming out of your laptop or phone is first being translated through a Digital to Analog converter before it hits the speaker! When working in a hybrid work environment, having decent converters is also very necessary as you are expecting to route your sound in and out of your computer multiple times. Better converters distort the audio less, so your end result sounds better.
      If you want to discuss hybrid workflows or just talk more about conversion, please give me a ring!

      @@lalocura1828 Yes, you would still need a converter and interface of some sort! Analog audio gear and the computer speak different languages, so you have to convert the analog signal into digital in order for the computer to be able to use it.
