Gita Gopinath is an Indian American economist who has been the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund since 2019. In that role she is the Director of IMF's Research Department and the Economic Counsellor of the Fund. She is on leave of public service from the economics department of Harvard University where she is the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics. She is also a co-director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics program at the National Bureau of Economic Research and has worked as the Economic Adviser to the Chief Minister of Kerala. Gopinath was appointed as Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund in October 2018. In an interview with Trevor Noah on The Daily Show, she named the worldwide recession of 2020 as "The Great Lockdown." She will offer a fascinating insight into the workings of the 21st century globalised economy, and on how 2020 impacted economies worldwide.

So high inflation, a higher minimum wage being called for across the USA, less service related jobs, cheaper imports to offset low wages, stagnation in the ability to clear product from shelves due to inflation, solidifying manufacturers who may be in labor disputes and unable to produce more goods and increasing consumer debt for anyone who won’t level down…and we are only 21 minutes in folks! Most countries in the Global South because of IMF and World Bank lending policies--Conditionality of loans; structural adjustment (Washington consensus)--left them to the mercy of any global shocks, ex Corona virus pandemic. China didn't suffer the kind of difficulties the US and other counties did because, in the final analysis, of State planning!

In using future taxes for present spending instead of tailoring present spending to what we can afford we borrow from the children and future generations and assume that they will be able to afford to repay it, which is really stealing from our children and their children when they will be no more able to afford it given the resources we will be leaving them with which to repay our debts. If child abuse is present economic policy then it's a solution that no loving parent would ever decide on so what kind of human beings would do such a thing? Such economics when so many economies now owe most of their GNP or GDP is no different to parents who own a house borrowing and spending its total value so that their children would have nowhere to live. The real problem is that governments do not want to tax their wealthy citizens and those they rely on for votes and the children are easy targets when the media is controlled by the same kind of people who would leave their children with nothing i.e. purely greedy and selfish. The same thinking predominates the climate change issue when the media is presenting another 50 years of warming as the answer when the reality is that massive CO2 extraction and an end to all emissions immediately is all that will save us from extinction. When we can't stop the planet's ice from melting or the droughts that are ending food production because of our emissions how is the next generation to do it after we add another half century of emissions and greater warming every year of it? That makes us no better than the animals who know nothing of what's in store for the planet and their offspring so couldn't care less about it.

Thanks Faang, when I will be hired. I want to end this.
    The matrix isn't that hard.
Yeah, the corporate tax would be lower and restructuring will be easier.
India has the human capacity and capability when it enhanced its political efficiency. Without balanced this would may cause imbalance. The CO2 carbon footprint of India are one of the highest.
People and countries looks only on charts and not the impact. Thatd why I have this reserve.
    Without sustainability.
    Whats the matrix.
When counties can expedite and utilize the resources without the care for the environment.
India has hit by draught and other countries. Some of the countries IMF has lend money, theyve use it for social service and not as income generating business and infrastructure that enhanced and develop government and business.
The social ladder depends on the ability of a community and country to utilize its resources to develop profit.
A lot red countries are on that list.
Its hard for me to explain the chaos but when the light and water. The waves, I can see calmness in the chaos. Even I crawl I would the light and win and win again.
We fight, that's the only to do.

    Circulation of money.
    The flow of money
I could not map it now because of my current situation.
The money flow has a flow.
If I have hyper inflation an international digital would do.
    An equivalence but not dollars.
The hyper inflation on banks isn't really profitable.
Mostbafe on money changing and metals.
When we have a mickey mouse money, the philippines used the dollar and dollar accept it as an equivalence for goods payments.
    Yeah its only hypothesis.
    It would not work.
    The landscape isn't clear.
    We build somewhere.
Its chaotic but I have seen the light.
Its hard but doable. It ain't easy but doing the wrong ways it's only pain and suffering.
We do this on our system.
If all countries proceed without the reserve for the environment and natural integrity of our nature.
My technology is the cause of the end. As we know it.

Gita Gopinath is incredible as always! But sorry to point this that the girl interviewing her seems so lost throughout. There should be a little bit more experienced person taking these kind of interviews who can pose follow-up questions and make it more interactive.

Poor countries should not be delusional that IMF is gonna help them build their economies. IMF cannot build anything...their help is actually negligible. 😂😂...almost zero.
