    It's me. Hi. I'm the target demographic, it's me.
    My board is basically big box Meris and Strymon pedals, Boss, Source Audio, and a Zoia switched through a Boss ES-8. No shade on people who gig with modelers, but I use an old school backline and amp modeling doesn't concern me-- although I'm sure there are Kemper/Fractal/etc. players who use otherwise similar rigs to mine and have similar needs.
    I've been waiting for this exact pedal-- a "Helix grade M5 controlled by MIDI"-- for years now, because it's nice to have a Line6 effect here and there, but I don't need any more than one, and every other Helix product is overkill.

    • @MarkRendle

      This. I could totally grab one of these (in a sale) and loop it into my Tech 21 fly rig.

    So, this is the HX Stomp version of the HX Effects. I think Taylor misidentified the purpose and user. This isn't for someone looking at an HX Stomp, this is for someone looking at an Eventide H9.

  • @DeadlyFredXXX
    @DeadlyFredXXX Před 8 měsíci +31

    Yeah I mean nothing against the Helix but it's almost ten years old at this point, that's a long time in terms of amp modeling tech. The price on this thing is kind of crazy. You can still buy a brand new Line 6 M5 for less than 200 bucks if you want a bunch of Line 6 effects in one pedal.

    • @scottmartin5492
      @scottmartin5492 Před 8 měsíci +4

      This is replacing the M5. I would have thought that was obvious to everyone. And the M5 has done well enough that it’s stayed in production for over ten years, so I’m sure Line 6 has no doubts about the HX One’s market appeal.

      @johnschober4008 Před 8 měsíci +2

      10 years is a long time in terms of modelling tech but if a unit has the storage and ability to be updated, age doesn't really matter, it's really the software that generates the tones. Just to illustrate my point, a software plugin will sound the same on a 10 year old PC as it does on one bought yesterday (as long as all the in/outs are of a decent quality and that tech hasn't really moved).

    • @gerrykavanagh
      @gerrykavanagh Před 5 měsíci

      The “magic” in modeling is in software. DSP power doesn’t increment at the same rate as computer CPUs, so what was top of the line 10 years ago is still relevant today

  • @aaronsmithey4044
    @aaronsmithey4044 Před 8 měsíci +7

    I think it's smart, without knowing too much about it, for someone who doesn't want or need a big multi unit. This takes a small space on an existing pedalboard and fills a few gaps etc. The M5 did that for me for many gigs. "swiss army knife" type thing without the big price tag i.e. good enough.

  • @heartpath1
    @heartpath1 Před 3 měsíci +1

    I’m a pro session / touring guitarist of 35+ years experience. The HX One is PERFECT for me. It kicked my beloved H9 off my fly rig. I can’t think of a single complaint. Pre / post routing so it truly fills ALL the signal chain gaps, algorithms sound great (kudos to Line 6 for never stopping their improvements), flux is ridiculously useful and easy, and it’s compact. Oh, and it cost me $250. In the studio head to head the H9 still wins slightly for audio quality but I have to say I’m very impressed with how good the HX sounds. Live you be hard pressed to tell the difference. This little pedal literally SOLVED all my pedal board issues.

    Love your videos man. I think there's a market for the HX One. It's defiantly a gateway product at this price point but it's also a good utility pedal, perhaps for the gigging musician that uses conventional pedals but needs a swiss army knife for that one song. Would be handy to have in a pro studio to when you just need to dial up one effect as opposed to having to deal with a multi-effect unit or reach into a vault of analog pedals. I think what is so disappointing about this release is that we are all starving for a new Helix and this is like a "be sure to drink your Ovaltine" moment.

  • @rutger4131
    @rutger4131 Před 8 měsíci +4

    I think there's def. a market for this. Eventide does similar things with the H9 and the separate pedals like Tricerachorus. Be that as it may, I do think they dropped the ball on price. While I think the pedal looks super slick, buying two of these is the same as an HX stomp. I think street prices will come down for these quickly, maybe in the low $200 and then it could be really competitive with other delay pedals and such out there.

    I've only just learned this exists and I want one.
    I don't want a big unit and I don't want amp modelling. If I bought a stomp it'd cost more, I wouldn't use the amp sims and I wouldn't be able to power it with my existing psu mounted under my board. I could pop this on my board no problem and it would expand my effect options enormously.
    Seems pretty dope to me.

  • @joeromero7165
    @joeromero7165 Před 8 měsíci +1

    I wish instead of the effects, it was an amp modeler only. That's how I use my HX Stomp. I use external effects and just use the Stomp as my amp/IR. I would love a stand alone amp modeler in a nice compact size like this.

  • @priorwitness
    @priorwitness Před 8 měsíci +1

    I actually did want something like this. For amps and amp modeling I'm good. I have my own drive pedals that I like. I have a Plethora X5 for all of the other effects that I use that I just need to sound good to fine (actually the delays are really good in that thing and for metal the Sentry actually is a great noise gate and I dig the compressor). So what I've been in the market for is another unit that does everything else that I don't have in order to spice up my sound when I want it to. Something that I could change to an EQ, or a Fuzz, or another kind of weird modulation, or maybe even another amp model for the heck of it. I was looking hard at something like the Zoom MG50 or the Line6 M5, but they're really old tech, and they still go for around $150 to $200 new. So I was excited for this product ... until I saw the price. $300 is not worth it. I'd pay $200 for this, but anything more than that is a bit steep.

  • @smagliaro
    @smagliaro Před 8 měsíci +1

    I feel like so many people are misunderstanding this product. Ordinary stompboxes run $200-250 all the time these days, so $300 for a super compact MIDI-controllable box with 250+ really good effects is still quite a bit of value. Heck, a Digitech Drop is $240, so the HX One almost earns its value just from being a MIDI-controllable polyphonic pitch shifter. I run a pretty small board with a Quad Cortex and my wireless unit on it, and I'm seriously considering getting one of these to run in the FX loop as a standalone "Swiss army knife" to use anywhere in any of my patches (huge ambient stereo delays, poly pitch, etc.).
    Take this part with a grain of salt:
    It's also worth noting that the last few products using HX tech (DL4 MKII, Catalyst, One) are all running on ARM architecture rather than SHARC. MultiFX pedals historically have been using SHARC for specific latency/efficiency advantages it has for DSP vs. other architectures, but these newer L6 products might be pointing towards an eventual shift to ARM for the entire lineup (i.e. Helix 2). So while the One isn't as exciting of a product as a new Helix would be, my hunch is that it's actually helping to lay the groundwork for the next era.

    • @scottmartin5492
      @scottmartin5492 Před 8 měsíci

      L6 has indicated in forum posts that for more complex architectures, they still need the low latency that SHARC processors can provide and ARM can’t. They expect to keep using SHARC for the foreseeable future.

  • @jimsimmons2674
    @jimsimmons2674 Před 8 měsíci +3

    Line 6 should have included some amp models in this unit and it should have been called the HX Stomp Mini,for $300 the HX ONE is too high for a unit with effects only in my opinion!You could buy a NUX MG30 for the same price and also there are other modelers in this price range!

  • @trunks828
    @trunks828 Před 8 měsíci +1

    I feel like product is for people who like a what if pedal on there board something like the h9 was and still is. It’s always good to have something on the fly especially when other brands like strymon charge twice as much for one unit and it can do very few things compared to the h9 and this pedal. I got friends who want this because when they are in the studio this doesn’t take space on a board it’s easy to pull up and play. I think using this with a midi controller is a must also because you can change effects on the fly quickly just like the h9 to me this is a h9 killer especially when that pedal used goes for 400 plus dollars for the max

    As someone who owns and still uses an hx stomp, I completely agree with your comments about the quality of the amp models. In the beginning I was pleased with how they sounded , but that faded over time. Something never felt quite right. It's like you said, very two dimensional. It's just like their speaker cabinets, even after they overhauled them, I personally felt they just couldn't compete with 3rd party impulse responses. Sound is all subjective, and if your thrilled by the tones your getting , that's great. Helix is still a valuable tool for my rig as far as routing and other effects. But as far as amp tones , I have moved onto synergy products and I'm blown away by the sound I'm getting from my syn 2 preamp.

    I like the idea of separating the effects from the amp models but they already did that with the HXFX. I can’t get along with the feel of line 6 amp modeling. They do sound great. Anyway, I feel like I could use this with my bass rig but there’s other options for about the same price or cheaper.

    I use real amps, cabs, and analog pedals; with one exception - I have a line 6 m5 on my board. It’s a great tuner and it’s nice to have access to a bunch of more niche effects I don’t need regularly or enough to justify buying a standalone pedal. The m5 is great for my needs so I’m sure this new pedal can be of use to many too

    It's a HX Effects with a smaller footprint. Makes perfect sense to me. One of these, being controlled through MIDI, on a pedalboard next to a Quad Cortex; sounds like a great little compact setup.

    HX one is a budget pedal (one pedal to do all the effect). For 299$, a pedal that can do delay, reverb, overdrive and all the other effect and it stereo and midi. Of course it is not for everyone but it can compete against the pedal market (strymond, eventide)

  • @richardmckenney9434

    This is for some one who wants or needs a avg. pedal sized Swiss Army Knife like Eventide H9 or Line 6 M5 which im pretty sure the HX one is replacing. There's plenty of people that do as both the H9 & M5 have lasted so long and are still selling.

  • @BigDancin
    @BigDancin Před 8 měsíci +1

    I am not a Helix user, and I am not likely to become one until they update to a Helix 2. But I did buy this pedal because I want to pair it on my secondary pedalboard with the Tonex pedal. It will knock my chorus pedal off the board, and then I will have one pedal that can become any modulation, pitch, wah or reverb pedal, etc. that I need it to be for any particular preset. Midi switching will allow that. It will also knock my tuner off of the board, so everything becomes lighter and more compact. Hopefully, the "flatness" of the Helix sound is more limited to its amp models rather than the FX - my understanding is that the effects are very good in the Helix ecosystem. Paired with Tonex, it should be magic! And I don't need more than one block at a time - I have a great delay and OD pedal that will sit on the same pedalboard.

  • @eternalskull

    This is meant to compete with the H9 by Eventide. It's actually amazing considering how much more you can do with this. The value is insane especially with pedalboard lovers. If you toss it in a looper that let's you rearrange pedal order than this is a beast and may be worth buying two at that point.

    I was also confused when I first saw the HX one. I'm just hoping it's not the case of "let's ignore everything else else and make this thing nobody asked for" because stuff like the Pod Go is almost 3 updates behind the rest of the HX line, much to the grievance of Pod Go owners
    The HX One will probably make more sense once we have more demos out in the wild (or at least, see it used in more contexts), until then I'm reserving my judgement

  • @andreww.7658
    @andreww.7658 Před 8 měsíci

    What everyone is missing is the price vs what you get vs sound quality of the effect. HX stomp or podgo on the used is a far better monetary spend than the One. Added modeling, stacked effects, snapshots. Way more bang for the buck. Unless you really want an emulated TS9 I guess? 🤷🏼‍♂️
    If I want a single effect buy that specific pedal. Unless you’re into constantly reconfiguring your board as you swap effects, I guess.

    I reckon the point of it is to draw pedal fanatics into the Helix world of products. Jumping into a Stomp from a pedalboard can feel too much of a leap, the HX One seems like a versatile choice for anyone who loves their pedalboard and doesn't want to drift too far from that way of working. I agree with you that it seems a bit odd given the power in a Stomp for a few extra bucks, but I reckon they're onto something here. If I was still into spending an hour a week organising my pedalboard and wondering what else to buy, I might have a go at the HX One and I expect it would have made me consider making a shift towards other Line6 products.

    Make a modern amp, a thrash amp, and (and this would be polarizing) a line 6, Metallurgy, DOOM amp unit 🤷

    The line6 business model had always been to make as many version of the helix or the POD stuff and soon will make a new helix then start all over and make 8 new versions of it for less and less money instead of spending time developing the helix software and updating their amp modeling. The helix amp models have always had no feel for a player that digs in and does some chugs.

    I think there is a reason to buy this kind of thing. The effects sound good and it is a good pedal. I think it’s totally overshadowed by the HX Stomp, because it’s literally just a worse version of it, but it’s also half the price. There’s a sweetwater sale going on right now for 249, and seeing as most quality effects pedals are priced around 200 bucks new, it is a pretty good deal imo. I think it’s a cool pedal that can be both an introduction to a lot of effects for beginners and a pedal that can be used professionally and sound better than something like a zoom B4, which is much cheaper.

    The most baffling thing to me is the price. Helix effects haven't aged as much as the amp modeling but $300 for one modeled effect at a time?? People can get an M5 for less or a Pod Go for $50-$100 more. Feels hard to justify when those two demolish it in value.

    • @scottmartin5492

      This is the M5 replacement. I expect it to go out of production shortly. And the HX One has all of the M5 effects *plus* all of the effects developed for the Helix series, so I don’t see how the M5 "demolishes" it in value. (And that’s without getting into things like the Flux control, the vastly expanded MIDI capability, the pre/post switching….)

    I feel like a lot of guitar gear companies have been doing that for a while now. Not only digital pedal and modellers, but even guitar and amp brands.
    It's like 95% of guitar gear production is not about innovation but about following the trends of the market in different prize ranges. Some brands don't do the most cheap ranges so they still present themselves as special, others only do the cheap ranges so they fill that gap, and others do both or the middle range. But this of releasing 5 versions of the same product with different prizes is what the guitar brands market has been about all around.

    This is definitely a product out of the sales/marketing team. Gotta milk the tech through to it's last breath. If it only has one block this doesn't appeal to me, but otherwise I was an Atomic Amplifire user and ran it in 4CM with a Boss GT-1000 Core for extra effects which was in the mix with the HX Stomp when I was building that rig. I'm sure this will appeal to someone though, but in general I agree I'd like to see Line 6 build on the goodwill they got back with the Helix line with something next gen.

    I think this pedal would make more sense in a 150 to 200 dollar price point. At 300 that's pretty close to the hx stomp new and even closer to a used/demo model. I got my Helix LT for 800 (it was a demo/floor model). At that price point I'd probably choose a headrush mx5 (349.00 when I got mine new I think they are 399 now).

    The only thing that feels weird is the HX designation really, when it's a successor of the M series like the DL4 MK2 is a successor to the DL4 with helix delays and verbs. To be honest, as pod user, I never quite got the M series, which felt like a cash grab to me with Pod Live units out there; but through the years both as a player and as someone working for a live club I've seen plenty of M5 units in pedalboards or racks. When enquiring about why the answer was simple: it's a single size pedal, sounds great and works like a tonal swiss army knife when you need a single weird effect per song that doesn't justify buying it separately. So I guess the HX one targets those people, offering the M5 sounds as legacy and the new HX FX models as a bonus is a similarly neat package with added midi for easier control

    Not sure why this pedal confuses people, they had the m5 previously. this will sound much better than, and there are other pedals like the eventide h9 that do this same concept (less options actually, this can be a drive section too). It's a wildcard pedal, you have an extra space on your board, slap this in there and it can be whatever you need for a given song, controlled by midi. I'm sure it doesnt sound as good as an h9 but it's half the cost with many more effect options. As somone in the process of building out a pedalboard and who currently owns a helix, this is kinda intriguing. There are lots of effects in the helix that sound great and I'm very familiar with, wouldn't mind one of these giving me the option

    This box is for folks who need an effect here and there for key songs but don't want a big whack of pedals and the price that comes with them. A DL4MkII costs the same and is double the size.. An Eventide H9 is double the cost or more. The sounds in the HX One are higher quality than what a lot of single effect pedals offer. The sound quality comparison that you speak of is true. There is definitely at least a 5% improvement with some of the models in some of the new tech but it's inconsequential in a mix and especially live. I don't need or want this pedal. But I have a few friends who are excited about it because it's an affordable device, that sounds good and solves their problems.

    Part of the charm of the very best of what could be done at any given time even decades ago is tunes were written with them that we all love. The mud on an OD was not mud but just a hazy mushy but interesting tone. Artificially boosted frequencies meant to compensate for something a unit could not do became just another slightly weird but cool coloring of the signal. The Line 6 small units are great because of it. It is their top models that should be totally scrapped and brought into the present.
    I think Line 6 live off of baby boomers and consumers that do not follow the on line scene and purchase what the salesman at their local bricks and mortar store sells.
    Yamaha own Line 6 and have deep pockets. The perfect move would be to buy St. Rock who can nail beyond killer sounds and marry that with Line 6 that are generally good at making product user friendly.
    They could own the under $1000.00USD market.

    If you compare it to something like the Boss 200 series pedals, it’s a pretty decent option considering something like the Boss 200 series pedals which are focused on one effect type and around the same price. When I first saw the HX One appearing in my YT feed, my first thought was maybe it was a preamp/power amp/cab sim pedal with maybe a couple boost or OD effects and that's it. I think I would have liked that more than what this actually is.

    • @troyfrink
      @troyfrink Před 8 měsíci +1

      That’s not a bad idea. Put all of the Metallurgy amps (maybe a few more like the modded 2204) and effects in one compact unit. I’d get that over a Helix or HX that has way more than I’ll ever attempt to use.

    • @ChuckLeone
      @ChuckLeone Před 8 měsíci

      @@troyfrinkThe IK Multimedia Tone X is essentially what I described but a little larger in foot print than the Helix One and updatable via the Tone X software. It might be a good option if you’re looking for something that packs the essentials into a smaller unit than a Helix or Cortex at a fraction of the cost.

    I would need to rearange my Pedalboard everytime with this unit if I chose to use the single delay or reverb or modulation effect with only having enough DSP for one effect at a time. A bit odd this one. I would be happier with the Zoom Multistomp MS-50G pedal.

  • @fixedgear37

    A small pedal with just effects. Makes sense to me. What's the question again?

  • @johnschober4008
    @johnschober4008 Před 8 měsíci

    It's a weird one but, when you consider that something along the lines of a JHS reverb is £100, MXR M300 Reverb is £230, BOSS RV6 is £160 these are all one effect at a time, the price isn't that bad when you consider all the options in it. Some boutique single function pedals are vastly more money. Some of the effects in there are truly amazing and would be £100 each in single pedal form. With enough DSP, digital gear doesn't become obsolete as quickly as it used to because your pedal is as good as the software/algorithms and these can just be updated, which Line 6 are brilliant at. This is why things like the Helix and Kemper are still relevant. If anything though it makes you realise the value of something like the HX effects. I won't be buying one because I have 2 x HX effects. I'm not sure who it's really for though.

    I though this was something like the Zoom MS-60B Multi-Stomp Bass Pedal, where you can do 3 slots ex: Compressor/Amp/Cab IR....I think that would have been a good idea for Line 6 doing this smaller pedal. The zoom is a better way to go, and for only around 100$ new if your wanting a solid single bass FX pedal...imo. One effect for 300$...nope.

    I think I'm just going to stick to analog pedals and real amps. My biggest problem that you point out is the stuff sounds fake, which to me is no good. If Quad Cortex could emulate their plugins on a floor board I would be all in. But until then, I'll keep using Boss pedals.
