I always feel like i'm a bit slow, usually a simple fan art piece can take me like a week, but I have a job and draw when i'm home, and hearing that what I create is way more important than how long it took is really nice to hear!
Laura looked much prettier in long hairs. Now it's like 10 years more:( But it doesn't matter. It's just haircut. In pieces, Laura can always draw longer:) Mad respect for 3 last pieces on Instagram. I am sharing these pieces with every friend in art society, I want to get this level in one day:)
thank you! i stopped worrying about how long something took me early on this year and focused on getting something done right. A lot more people need to realize this! thanks for sharing!
It’s nice to hear this... I’ve always wanted to work in the animation industry but I have felt like I wouldn’t be fast enough, not good enough etc. This really did help me a lot.
Thank you for this! I know you said it makes you a bit anxious, but hearing that we are "allowed" to take our time and that speed comes naturally after time is so comforting. I find myself getting slower at times trying to focus on getting better, so hearing this helps a lot. Tysm!
Honestly, I've asked other artists this question because I tend to take my time drawing and want to get faster without compromising quality (so I'm very sorry if I've asked you this before). I'm still learning. Thanks for another awesome video! :)
I haven't been watching your vids because of college but YOU'RE A BACKGROUND PAINTER IN STEVEN UNIVERSE NOW???? ONE OF MY FAVE SHOWS??? AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH CONGRATULATIONS!
Thank you so much for sharing your journey and your experience! It doesn’t matter how slow you are, I absolutely and definitely progress over comparison as I love to say. I have inspired watching some of yours and other CZcamsrs videos and finally launched my own channel. It’s so great to have this amazing art community to support and inspire each other!
This is such a valuable video. You can't get better than real life experience. I went to a school for a general knowledge in game design and I taught my self how to draw, paint, and doing graphics. I recently got hired on a team as a graphic designer and this was one of my biggest concerns: Time. It was always in the back of my mind. "Am I doing this quick enough?" "Oh lord, I took an hour and a half to do this one job" "do my coworkers think I'm slow??" Even though I'm still new to the job, I'm learn that not once have they said anything about the time I've taken to do work. They were (of course focused on deadlines) mostly focused on the design and the application/functionality of the design. I also learned that, in my case, whenever we have a meeting on our new project, I'm trying to digest all of the information at once so I can dive in as fast as I can and I soon realize I get so frazzled by the amount of info I need to worry about. I realize that the only way I can do my best is if I *slow down* and go over my info. Only then can I maximize the time spent on working the design and solving those design problems. You get immersed in your work and it teaches you how to understand the issue that come up and how to fix them. It's a lot more thorough. Now if I tried to blaze through it, I might push a project through that, yeah, I was fast, but I missed a critical error that could have been corrected by taking a moment to just look back over the work. So yes, while it's good to be fast. Going too fast doesn't teach you anything, you make more mistakes, and you can't work at your best capacity. In school, and in my own work sometimes, I've been so focused on getting the most content out as possible, that it ends up being shallow.
So I glad I found this, I just recently graduated with just a BA and I'm trying to understand and become a visual developer as well. My weakness is exactly what Laura said as I tend to compare myself to others and the fact that I feel like I'm slow in my art works. Only because I like to take my time and understand my skills and techniques and try not to be so much of a perfectionist. Being a artist is hard but I love it and it's the only thing that I'm great at.
I’m glad you make these videos. I hope developing artists can find their own styles quicker and not worry about conformity with others work. Individuality and self belief is so important for art of all kinds.
Do you think that speed exercises (like taking 1 min, 5 min, and 10 min to sketch a reference) are useful to growing? I've only used them for fun games with artist friends!
the reason that exercise is good is because setting a time constraint forces you to think in ways that help resolve what needs to be made. when you get good at it you find better more efficient ways to solve problems, say for gesture studies, you learn what shapes better represent forms of a model and what not.
Yeah... I asked that question on that "three speed paints" video... I'm among the culprits... haha (sorry)! I guess, for me, "speed paint" or "speed drawing" has a different meaning... In my drawing classes, we spent entire sessions doing three-minute drawings... funnest drawings I ever did! Anyway, that's what comes to MY mind when I hear "speed paint", and that's why I asked how long they took. In the end, I really don't care how long they took... I was just curious... like I stated in my comment on the other video, your work is inspiring, and I'm SO glad you share it with us! We get a peek inside your creative process as we see you build up a drawing layer upon layer. It JUST INSPIRES me! Keep up the great work, and PLEASE keep sharing with us! =)
no worries! a lot of times people just call timelapse drawing videos "speedpaints" but people also call drawings made with a short time limit "speedpaints" or "speed paintings." it's very confusing! I originally wanted those paintings to be one hour each (the video was going to be called 3 paintings in 3 hours) but I went over on all of them so I had to pivot 😂
My friends always tell me that I am pretty slow because I normally spend 4 hours in a normal background paiting, and I start to worry about that, but this just made me more confident. Thank you 🌟 Also your new haircut is too cute, I know I have said it before, but it just suits you
What a coincidence! I was asking myself this question earlier in the day and in the end, I concluded I was going to take the necessary amount of time until I'm satisfied.
I think a part of why artists wonder about speed is because they get told that it matters. I'm the slowest in my class at my art school, and I got told (especially in first year) by not only my classmates but also by my teachers over and over again that I need to work quicker. It's a given that a part of the reason why I was going slow wasn't a good one - a lack of confidence. But another big reason was because I valued quality over quantity. Because of this I always thought that there was a time limit on doing a piece of art in the industry. I'm faster now but I'd have appreciated if at least one teacher had told me that my attention to detail and the care that I put into my work mattered and that it was because I took my time to do it.
Its really motivating to see a video like this. It is alleviating for many MANY artist I bet - THANK YOU I am still worried that I am too slow, and I think that will take time getting over.
Hahaha wow I don't know why but as an artist I sort get annoyed being asked this question but I found myself wondering the same thing and wanting to ask you and now you post this video! So awesome ha. Thanks for sharing Laura!
THANK YOU so much for this Laura. Seriously. Speaks for the many. I get asked about this too and I never know how to answer it! I always feel the need to say as if it should have taken me less than I really did. It's so easy to get caught up with the idea of creating art fast (seriously where does that pressure even come from) and end up doing unhealthy comparisons. It's a great reminder to know it's not a race and that we all have our own unique pace - and also thank you for sharing the fact that it's also a matter of getting used to when it comes to working in the industry. Love the new haircut!
Wonderful thank you for sharing. I've often been curious as to how long it takes for an industry professional to complete work & it's nice to be reminded that we shouldn't compare yourself to other artists. cute! haircut by the way & adorable pup 🐶 🙂
I needed this so bad, you are such an inspiration for me! I love Disney and I want to work on character design in Disney! Also your dog is so adorable 😍
My finals are next week for my classes. (Vis Dev major) and I really needed to hear this. 😭😭 doing a still life painting on 16x20 stretch canvas. Took me 6 hours to paint and I'd say I'm about 60% done. I am very slow and I'm constantly adjusting. Thank you for the advises you give Laura they are so comforting 😭😭
Thank you SO much! Yup, I'm so anxious about it, bc I feel it takes too long. But I am a newbie, so this video calmed me down a lot. Just what I needed. Thx, Laura from Copenhagen, Denmark, Europe, Peter
Ooof... Well...As an animator for feature films and tv...I can tell ya that speed IS actually pretty important. It is in story as well. Yeah being good and turning out great work is obviously important and ultimately the thing that matters. But....if you can't hit the deadlines..you won't last long. Speed, i'd say is a close second to being good. And yeah..it's pretty important. :D
this video only talks about background painting and design, and I didn't say it's not important- we work very quickly! I just said that you'll gain speed with practice! and as for something like animating or storyboarding, it's of the utmost importance for sure.
What you said took off much weight from my shoulders. I am a student and beginner in this digital art and animation. Sometimes the longest my artwork takes is anywhere from 3 days to a week, hours after hours. It makes me feel anxious and I wonder what's wrong, why is it taking me so much of time, how and when will I improve ,I am too slow, my time is running out, I could have done more artworks within this time frame and all sorts of thoughts, negativities and doubts starts building up. It feels discouraging and demotivating sometimes, sitting with one artwork for days and being unable to complete it. But I won't let it stop me from moving forward though. So yeah, questions like these always pops up in my mind during these times.
as a beginning artist whos only been drawing for around a year i have "mastered" portraits in that i can probably draw one in like an hour when it used to take me three. but obv i need to push myself more so now im moving away from portraits and am trying my best to do foreshortening and drawing full bodies and hands (which i dabbled in before but kinda gave up because i was so focused on getting portraits down). but im really happy that im challenging myself and drawing things that im scared of. drawing foreshortened faces has always been my nightmare but here we are
I’ve been driving for the past 35 years and my drains out pretty fast now that tells you how good I have gotten through time so yeah just keep doing it until your work gets faster than it gets original because when you do things faster you become original your own style comes through that is why they like to see you do it fast because you have no time to think just your talent coming out
I typically like to finish drawings super fast it works fine for cartoons but not for realism. I struggle with slowing down. Typically the more complex a drawing is the longer it takes. Picture of Spongebob catching a jellyfish under 2 minutes. Crowd shots 2 days maybe a week. Crowd shots are murder.
Hi Laura Thank you so much for this video. This is really motivating and helpful. I feel more confident after watching this video and now I know that I have to focus more on my skills. And yes your new hairstyle is amazing. 😊
I had no idea you were working on Steven Universe (though technically it's probably Steven Universe Future, the epilogue series). That's really impressive. As you're a figure in animation I look up to a lot, I'd like to see what specific backgrounds you create for the show as new episodes air. As for the main point of the video, I agree with your thoughts on quality over quantity. Here I thought studios would want you to turn out work fast, but taking the time to make art the best it can be can really benefit your skills and the given show or film too. This is the kind of advice I find pleasing to hear as I continue to try to get my first big animation break.
thank you!! studios DO expect us to turn out work fast- it needs to be quality AND quantity! I just meant when making your own work for a portfolio, work on quality over quantity! your speed will increase as you practice to get up to studio level!
Now that makes perfect sense and in line with what you said in the video. I work on drawing and character designs every chance I get, and try not to settle for mediocrity which comes with devoting a lot of time to make it look nice. I feel that the more I do it, the more the basics of crafting appealing characters come naturally to me and that should be a big help in turning out great work in a timely manner for an actual animation job which I should probably expect to see as I plan to start doing freelance animation design work in the coming year, 2020. Although I think I'm coming along well with my art, do you think maybe some pointers if I were to show you some of what I draw in a private message on Instagram or something?
I'm new to your channel and waaah, I really like your channel! :D Your job is my dream. :) I'm a college student taking up multimedia arts in animation, graphic design! waaah :D Love from the Philippines
Laura can I ask how do you decide when something is done. In other words when you decide to work on a study and not get too bogged down on details how do you differentiate "not getting hung up on details" vs "lazy brush work"? I hope I'm making sense.
Thanks for the great message, but I am curious, in any of your interviews, were you ever asked, "How long did it take you?" I feel that in portfolio reviews, they look more at the content and how you presented that content? By the way, I really enjoyed your perspective drawings in the other video. That bus station and others were epic!
i have a lot going on.... first, you should change your character’s hairstyle (make s video about you drawing your new pfp? idk your choice) secondly, i gasped so hard when you said, “background designer for tangled the series AnD sTeVeN uNiVeRsE” I LOVE YOUR VIDEOSSSS
I am guilty of asking this in your last video. I was just genuinely curious because my background is not digital and the speed art - although mesmerizing and fun to watch - makes it hard to grasp for someone who is not familiar with digital art. The thought of comparison never crossed my mind, and I can understand how that would be a very frustrating question to get on repeat.
deadlines at uni are short to try to prepare us for short working deadlines, but we did get longer time than 2 weeks if it was a really big brief. you do learn to work fast but after awhile its not so stressful. now out of uni im bored without a deadline lol
I’ve found the thing that slows me down the worst is wrestling with Photoshop or Painter’s tools and palettes. Always hunting for this or that, constantly moving stuff out of my way. 😖
This video pretty much squashed the notion that my school taught me. "Speed is king, you will not get an industry job if your work in your portfolio was created slowly"
Yep. Yesterday was the 1st time I EVER spent more than 10 minutes on a picture. It was amazing how much better my art looked taking my time. I always thought speed was the key. Nope. Apparently the tortoise beats the hare yet again. LOL You tell 'em, Laura.
I always feel like i'm a bit slow, usually a simple fan art piece can take me like a week, but I have a job and draw when i'm home, and hearing that what I create is way more important than how long it took is really nice to hear!
you're doing great! making personal art when you have a full time job is a challenge in itself!

I hope I'm making sense.
this was very helpful, thank you sm
Thanks for the great message, but I am curious, in any of your interviews, were you ever asked, "How long did it take you?" I feel that in portfolio reviews, they look more at the content and how you presented that content? By the way, I really enjoyed your perspective drawings in the other video. That bus station and others were epic!
thank you! and nope I've never been asked how long something took me in an interview!
I want to develop my art and I am no where near what you can do, but this was really great advice!
i have a lot going on....
first, you should change your character’s hairstyle (make s video about you drawing your new pfp? idk your choice)
secondly, i gasped so hard when you said, “background designer for tangled the series AnD sTeVeN uNiVeRsE”
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOSSSS
i wanna see some of the steven universe stuff u did ❤️
I am guilty of asking this in your last video. I was just genuinely curious because my background is not digital and the speed art - although mesmerizing and fun to watch - makes it hard to grasp for someone who is not familiar with digital art. The thought of comparison never crossed my mind, and I can understand how that would be a very frustrating question to get on repeat.
This video was so encouraging, thank you!
Love the hair, made you look younger, really suuts ya
Love the video and the hair too ❤️❤️
Thank you for this important reminder. 💞
Wanna cry TT thank you lulu
Preach! 10/10
deadlines at uni are short to try to prepare us for short working deadlines, but we did get longer time than 2 weeks if it was a really big brief. you do learn to work fast but after awhile its not so stressful. now out of uni im bored without a deadline lol
I am comment 100! That's all I have to say. Good video Laura.
Very True!
This is a very important question because I have no idea how much time I should put in my drawings and designs.
0:25 :0 Why thank you :3
I’ve found the thing that slows me down the worst is wrestling with Photoshop or Painter’s tools and palettes. Always hunting for this or that, constantly moving stuff out of my way. 😖
I want so see more of mabel 🧐
I feel like I take way to little time, compared to too long... I feel like I should be able to do something alot more detailed and focused.
Thanks for the insight as always its helpful. 👍
I am SO RELIEVED, thank you
public: "how long did this take you?" Artist: *stress sweats* "uhhhmmm..."
I DID NOT KNOW YOU DID STEVEN UNIVERSE BACKROUNDS TOO!!!
This inspires me to become a Animation Artist
Do you ever get pains in your hand or wrist from drawing every day?If how so you deal with it? Love your videos!x
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have a problem of being too slow :(
Good video
I know sense8 I think it was called the one with the red car in the garage was a personal piece. How long did that take? It is awesome
For now I’m just training and or acting and learning the fundamentals, I noticed I’d get frustrated cause it sometime I take a long time
