    I’m so sorry this is kind of a stupid question- but I’ve been seeing a lot of talk online about how the pandemic has affected the animation industry. Things like whether working conditions will return to normal post covid (requiring artist to come into studio everyday), or if animation has proven to be something that can be done remotely. Do you ever plan on making a video about something like this? I think a lot of people (including myself) would be very interested in what a professional like you has to say!
    (Also this is just an idea from a fan, if you already have videos planned out I completely understand. I always love your work and I find your posts very helpful and informative!!)

    Hi Laura, thanks for all you advice over the years. You previously covered art schools and this video covers what I’d call “a la carte schools” where you can get a class at a time, usually online. You’ve noted you went to UVA and since then there are a bunch of junior college and university programs in the U.S. focused on animation and entertainment art. It might be too much to cover but I’d love to hear what you think of them or at least which ones that are notable and how they are regarded in the industry. Thanks again!

    I wish more artists would mention a couple of California Community Colleges! Santa Monica Community college and Fullerton College are both fantastic options. Cost is $46/unit or FREE if you are a California resident. As for university options; SJSU, CSU Northridge, CSU Longbeach, CSU Fullerton are all state schools with animation programs as well. Look at the student work and look at the teachers portfolios to help you choose the school you want to attend.

    • @lulusketches

      do those schools offer courses in visual development and digital painting?

    • @foreversunseekers
      @foreversunseekers Před 3 lety

      @@lulusketches Yes! Fullerton college has three ex-animation industry folks leading their Digital Arts program. Phil Dimitriadis (Big Idea, 8 crazy nights, etc), Frank Guthrie (worked at Nickelodeon), Mike Sheehan (Disney Imagineer) all three professors have youtube channels of their class recordings you can find them by searching their names. There are several digital painting classes and they have a lab full of cintiqs on campus. art.fullcoll.edu/prog_courses.php#filter=.df_37 I found out about Fullerton college via Proko's podcast because Marshall Vandruff teaches there as well. The goal of the program is to offer a top class education at a fraction of the price. Thanks to the California Promise Grant (2 years free for California residents).
      As for Santa Monica Community college, I could never get into ANY of their classes because it would all fill up super fast. They have life drawing for animators, career development course and way more. These are two great schools that attract CSU graduates who were not able to get all of the skills they needed without going broke.

I was a student at csula for a semester but the animation program is just so terrible that I ended up transferring to Fullerton. The only thing is that you need a strong portfolio for these schools in order to enter to the animation programs, they're competitive but you'll learn from professors that worked in Disney and know all about the industry.

    I didn't go to college (or university, as they call it here). Immediately after my "high school", I enrolled in animschool. Maybe I was lucky but I managed to get an animation job with my reel so it is possible. The only thing I'm worried about is going overseas since I don't have a degree and I'm not in Canada or US so it might be hard to obtain a working visa. Haven't tried it yet though

      That's my biggest fear. Because you can have the skills but you located in a different country without a degree. So I guess its a problem to not have it, as it seems like you will need it to apply for a VISA
      My question is what if an international studio wants you but you don't have the VISA and degree

      @@christopher8869 US animation studios will sponsor your VISA if they want you to work for them, but you have to qualify for it with the degree

      @@lulusketches I'm still a little confused. How are they going to sponsor what you don't have. Bc you saying you still have to qualify for the VISA right.
      Or is it the other way around, like do you get a sponsored VISA through the studio or something like that and then maybe you can enrol in a college while working for the studio 🤔

    Loved the video! Quick question. For going into 3D character animation at say Walt Disney Animation Studios or Pixar Animation Studios would a masters degree at my local state collage and all 6 Character animation courses on Animation mentor be enough to be “equivalent” to a bachelors?

    • @lulusketches
      @lulusketches  Před 3 lety +1

      by 'state college' do you mean you're a US citizen? you don't need a degree to be an animator if you're a citizen, just a great reel. it usually lists 'BA or equivalent experience' as a requirement, but many of the artists and animators I know in the industry didn't finish college

      @@lulusketches yes I meant I’m a citizen lol and thanks for clearing that up for me 😁 I assume it’s still recommended I have some sort of degree in the field. Right now I’m about to go to a career center for interactive media and design for 2 years which would finish high school and get my foot in the door. I’m just trying to get as much experience as I can to stand out when I apply to a studio 😂😂

    Any pointers on Animschool? They claim to have certified courses. So between Animschool and animation mentor, which one is preferred in America?
    Also as an international applicant, if I take courses from Animschool, which is certified, do I have a chance to work in the United States or do we need a traditional degree? I'm a little confused, so asking. Thanks in advance!🙏
