Carol O'Connor wrote this episode and got an Emmy for it.
He was a brilliant actor.
I miss this era of 📺. Today's 📺 shows are Goat 🐐 Tripe
@@dougfredricks2017 must you criticize?
@@DippyHippie Doug is not lying.
@@DippyHippie Yes, he must. *We* must.
Archie Bunker’s Place was an underrated show. Archie’s character matured and became more likeable for more people. RIP Carrol O’Connor and Jean Stapleton. Together forever.
It was underrated. And these didn't air much in reruns, so people didn't really get a chance to sort of reappraise the series later on.
I liked his friendship with Murray.
A great era of CBS 📺
I don't see any indication of this show on TV now in streaming or whatever. Back in the day I really didn't catch much of it for some reason. Probably from newer hipper shows being on in the early 80s. If it's underrated, it's because it had so little airtime. About Archie, the network was probably intending to be more politically correct with him for ratings and viewership. I liked him on the old show and I've seen all of that. He talked very straight almost all of the time. Coarsely and off color, but so what? That's how grown men will talk among friends and in private. Plus he had very decent qualities which were under the surface, like lots of people do.
@@derekjolly3680 It's been airing on the channel Antenna tv.
Man when Archie was at the room and saw her slipper and broke down that was incredible acting scene.
IKR he won a Peabody award for Edith dying
All in the Family was and will always be the greatest TV show ever
@@davidcarney1827 One of the greatest.
Yeah that's top five for sure 🥺
I couldn't help but break down also. This show was done so good and showed what life was like for a lot of people back then.
I totally understand what Archie was going through, I lost my Wife in 2009 after a 2 year battle with cancer. Getting my footing afterwards was a challenge. How do you just write off 44 years of love and memories, you just can’t. It’s been 14 years and I miss her still.
So sorry 😔
I completely understand. It took me 6 months to sign to get the policy after my mom passing. Just feels like dirty money. 😔
😢😢
Oh I'm so sorry for your loss
You can't, you stay on loose footing. But you just get through it.
Such an underrated scene. You cannot just write someone off that you loved dearly with a signature. Glad Carroll won an Emmy for this.
Ummm, CoC won a Peabody, not an Emmy.
I went Thru this when my 28 year old son died from cancer in 2020. I don't care about the money, I didnt want to sign papers, I didn't want anything but to be left alone
You are a very dpecial person God bless you and your son
Special
I’m very sorry for your loss. I can understand the need to be left alone. Take care of yourself.
I can't imagine the pain of losing a child ...your own blood . My wife passed away recently and I go between needing to talk to someone and wanting to be left alone ...I feel hollow .
I can’t imagine your pain
This episode showed just how human and complex Archie was.
True. Archie is a complex individual. He's bigoted, stubborn, misanthropic and grumpy but underneath he wasn't a evil individual and was actually a decent human being.
@@jrewing1512 I just re-watched the episode where Archie was lying next to his beloved Edith right before her off screen demise & he said….”I ain’t nothing without you!” 😢
Finally
😢😢😢😢😢😢
Archie had some outdated views due to his upbringing. But deep down he was a good person who would never hurt anyone no matter their color or whatnot.
My heart really ache for Archie. Edith was such a very sweet, loving, and caring soul. Her heart and soul were so beautiful too.
In real life Carroll lost his 32 year old son who starred with him in, “The Heat of the Night”. Hugh had unfortunately gotten addicted to drugs and when he couldn’t beat the addiction took his own life.
@@hannaj4032 Yes, I know. Yet Mr. O'Connor had made a PSA about the dangers of drug abuse and mentioned the dealer of his son's demise. The dealer had tried to sue Mr. O'Connor but the case was dismissed.
@@rebels42wynn83- Yep Carroll was devastated and fueled by his grief. I respect what he did to avenge his son’s death.
Proves we shouldn't underestimate our loved ones. Never realize how much we love our precious loved ones until they're gone.
❤️
How very true ❤
One of the hardest episodes of television to watch in the history of entertainment
Amen we all loved Edith I can't watch
Actually there was another scene i found more heartbreaking. Archie is in his room talking to himself, i think he was taking off socks and shoes.
He sees one of Edith's slippers and recalls the morning she died. How he made breakfast for her and brings it to the bedroom. He said he called her name but she didn't answer. He went to her and realized she was dead. He jokes around a bit then just broke down in tears crying like a baby. I was speechless. I never want to see that scene again.
Love the series loved archie edith and meathead what a show this was a one of a kind show
You gotta be kidding me.
Not even close
Carroll O'Connor was a legend.
CARROL O'CONNOR IS A LEGEND!!!!
Every time I catch the episode where Edith passes.... I still 😭! Jean Stapleton was Fabolous!
I never missed an episode. But when I saw this one. It broke my heart. I felt like she was family.
So painful to watch. Edith was his beloved. She was everything to him. So was Gloria.
That may be but there are times that Archie treats Edith like crap too .
@@timothyturner1056Yes but deep down, he really loved her. Calling her a dingbat and a pip were terms of endearment, if a bit unorthodox, but that was because he never got to finish his education due to dropping out in high school to help his family. I remember being so happy for him that in a season 3 (IIRC) episode he finally finished his education and got his G.E.D.
And he cheated on her 🤷🏽♀️
So was Meathead too
I loved Edith Bunker. I was sad when she passed. 😔
Great show great actors except for meathead
@@jaymoon5906 Even Mike had his moments early on. What I don't like is what they decided to do with his character.
@@jaymoon5906 Reiner is still a meathead.
@@SBaby they could have killed Michael, but having him join a commune was putting him on a bus. It held on to the possibility that he could come back later.

Such good acting, so sadly believable. If this doesn’t make you tear up, then you haven’t experienced it yourself!

When television was worth watching. Good wholesome content.
My mom is going through this now after my grandmother passed away a week ago. Its almost like a full time job. What an accurate scene this is.
I was so young I don’t remember Edith dying she was such a perfect charecter, relatable and so loveable.
I was in high school and I watched the episode the night it aired. I remember it like it was yesterday.
I can relate with all of you. My dad died from stage four cancer, the day before Christmas Eve 12/23/22. This Christmas was a year. I didn't even celebrate with the family, wanted to be alone. I move forward, but his death changed me forever.
Carroll O'Connor was the best actor of his time. He had range of emotion. They ought to play these scenes and from all in the family too, in acting classes.
Very sad to hear the news of Edith's passing. Archie did seriously love Edith. I always enjoyed watching this TV show.
Her character was meant to be killed off but she didn't die in real life
When television shows were part of our lives. Could laugh, cry, cheer, sigh.
This episode WILL LIVE WITH ME FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. CARROL O'CONNOR IS A GENIUS. NORMAN LEAR IS THE MAESTRO.
Agree about Carrol but Norman Lear was a thief and fraud. He took other people's credit
RIP Norman Lear !
I never saw Edith's death coming.
It really broke my heart!
It did that to a bunch of people including myself.
It was part of the show she didn't die in real life.
Two sad episodes, the death of Edith bunker and the death of James Evans 😢
We all felt it it, when Edith died.
Absolutely
Indeed we did!
Same thing happened when my mother died. It weird how you don’t want to sign the paperwork. Even though it was 250k policy I had to force myself to sign off on it. NO amount of money can make you feel better when you lose your mother at a young age.
My condolences 🙏🏼
😥🙏
Or any age...
Very true. I kept getting calls about what to do with money my dad had in insurance policies. I was like I dont care. Send it and I'll figure out what to do. I did however buy a car I always told my dad I wanted to buy. Its my way to connect with him.
But you signed and took the cash
What a heart wrenching scene... I wish Gloria could have made a cameo; America would still be crying.
Jean Stapleton was sick and tired of playing Edith. She went back to Broadway, London and stages around the world. Her love was the stage, and she was great.
She wasn't sick and tired of it. She felt she had played the character's story out and it was time to move on. She adored her role and loved her co-star C.O'Connor. And yes she loved the stage but if you'd listen to her other interviews she felt bad leaving him and the show, but All in the Family was ending and like the show she moved on.
I just asked about this in another comment elsewhere lol.
When you're devastated. You're devistated.
I’m so thankful this CZcams channel exists. 🙏🏻💜
Not a sadder moment in a persons life.. I found myself in a similar situation, which I never ever thought I'd have to deal with..
Best TV show. Words fail.
This show was so good .. I love the drama. Great acting and writing
This happened to my mother when my younger sister died. She got the policy, signed it and dispersed every penny to me and my brother.
I remember watching reruns with my grandma when I was a lil guy. All in the Family, Sanford and Son, Odd Couple and all those other shows from the 70’s. I do remember my grandma explaining that Edith passed away in the show and not the actress passing in real life. Songs that made the hit parade…Guys like us we had it made… Those were the days….
I remember watching them when they aired. I feel old lol 😂
Edith was the reason why I watched the show and this is the saddest one of all
Yup but everything comes to a end
The quality of these sitcoms is far and beyond anything today just like everything else.. music, movies, social skills, common sense, appliances.....etc...
You said it!! Agreed!!
Thanks for including appliances. So true. America sucks these days not because of the people but because of the policies holding back the people’s spirit.
Because everything today is political and agenda driven woke crap.
A MEN TO YOU AND YOUR SENTIMENT VERY TRUE.
Culture war garbage.
Much like music, TV peaked in the seventies. All in the Family may very well have been the greatest TV show of all time, and is likely to remain number one forever.
I recently heard a television critic note that the Saturday night CBS lineup of MASH, Mary Tyler Moore and All in The Family in the 70s is still considered the finest evening of television in the medium's history.
Man I was a teenager when I first saw this episode damn how time flies by
Yep..so was I. I remember watching this episode the night it aired. I can't believe I turn 60 this year!
I almost cried watching that scene.

This broke his heart and more even though I know it was a TV show.
I just loved Carroll OConner in everything he did
This makes me love my wife even more now.
💕
If that insurance guy couldn't tell that Archie didn't want to sign anything, or take anything, because then he'd have to admit that Edith was really gone, and he wasn't ready to say " Good Bye".
Totally it.
@@rascalme9754 I've been through it, so I know.
The human condition. The price of love. 💔
I was maybe 14 when this episode aired. It broke my heart
I was 16 when it aired. It broke mine too. Especially when Archie breaks down at the end with Edith's slipper and does that monologue. That's just so REAL that you can't even tell it's acting!
I missed this episode. At the same time, I don't think me missing this episode means anything. I understand Archie's reluctance to sign anything, and his expectation for someone to just do what he asked.
Carol O’Conner was a wonderful actor. Loved All in the Family.
My wife passed 3 years ago together for 47 years since we were 15 years old in 72 it doesn't compare i dont THINK to losing a son so young but then in life nothing else matters metallica a good song PEACE from Brooklyn NY
Funny thing is if you dropped Archie from back then into a room of 100 people 40 and younger today he’d be the one with the most common sense out of everyone.
I never cried so much when I saw this episode!!!!!!!!
Very sad. I'm 70 and my Wife is 10 years younger. I always tell her I'm going first, God I hope so.
I remember this episode and show. I was very young at the time.
I know the feeling, first hand, myself. My wife passed aqay 15 minutes before I was to leave work for home. The next day and every day, I worked there, I would go into the office in the morning, and instead of going to my desk, I would go into my boss's office, dmshut tge door sit at his desk and cry forcmy beloved wife. When I got hine, U would sit in my chair and soend the rest if the evening grieving for her. 😢
Best Show Ever...Love Ended Every Episode
Its different today__When my mother-in-law died in 2018 at age 85, her son couldnt get that check soon enough.
Carol O Connor was a great actor
Loved this..SHOW!!!
My heart broke for ARchje Edith was his world show was never the same❤
Lost both my parents. I inherited some money. I’m so scared to spend it or lose it, cause even tho they are gone, it doesn’t feel right to touch it.
I agree. Same thing happened to me.
Now I'm intrigued. One of the men behind the bar was the foreman on "12 Angry Men" in 1957, who was really good in that. Interesting Pete Rose action shot by the payphone too.
Stephanie missed her aunt too. I actually remember both spin offs from the original series* Archie Bunker’s Place and Gloria. I didn’t start to pay attention to the original series until I got a little bit older. When I finally did that was when I learned about what had happened to Edith. Archie continued to raise a now teenage Stephanie.Although I had never seen this particular episode. *There were quite a few other spin-offs even before All in the Family. At least 2. Maude and Good Times. The Jefferson’ s aired after All in Family.
Good Times was a spin off of All in the family??? I did not know that. I knew that Maude and the Jefferson’s were, but not Good Times.
@@scottgordin9709 The Jeffersons and Maude were spun off from All in the Family. Good Times was spun off from Maude so it was more of an indirect spin off.
This one 😢made me cry
A very real reaction.
I loved this show made me sad when Edith died !
Wow. Simply wow.
Oh whatever.
I love that show like, I miss Archie, Sanford and Sons. Back when they put shows on that teach morals and values. People are to thick skinned and try to start stuff. The Archie Bunker show used sarcasm towards racism and showed how it is wrong!! How people didn't or couldn't see that I don't know!!
Kelseys bar was the best bar
I understand why Jean wanted to make her exit. Better opportunity came her way. Glad the departure went smoothly. Jean was rather sharp and quite sensible. Jean Stapleton, RIP.
That's the problem with insurance companies, they got no conscience
He was a big bully and mean to her
Good episode
This is probably the saddest moment in the show I'm not going to watch this I seen it and I cried.
Back when sitcoms were an art form.
I never watched Archie's Place. I was little and it seemed more dark and boring. I had no idea Edith died. I was younger than Stephanie.
Legend has it she found out they killed off Edith by watching this episode.
Jean Stapleton had already been quite clear she did not want to continue on "Archie's Place."
Good show with a Great cast 😜
I miss that show think I’ve watched every episode growing up
I watched this one time, the night it aired on CBS. I swore I would never watch it again, and only clicked on this link to type this message. Just too painful.
Talk about a great show jumping the shark!
where can we see whole episode?
It was so sad because the man that's he is to see him hurt like this scene so much more sad
I never really watched much of Archie Bunker's place but this show seemed so much more dark and depressing then All In the Family... Mike and Gloria divorcing and then Edith dying... I like to think this show didn't exist
Edith died before Mike and Gloria divorced
@@kristinadospoy7347 I really wasn't going in any order with what I said lol
@@Multifacted_Brotha I believe you
It was an unfortunate byproduct of the actors not wanting to continue with the show. All in the Family worked because it was an ensemble cast. You can't have a show with just Archie.
@@WiGgYof09 You said exactly what I was thinking ! Norman Lear , bravo brother !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOUR LEGACY will live forevermore.
They were always going to kill Edith off just like they did with the British original
I have gone through this 3 times, not insurance but setting up their funerals sad business with anything dealing with death.
I remember his FIRST BIRTHDAY after she died.. Archie cried while making a wish and blowing out his candles ...WHY ??????????????????..................HE WANTED HIS CAKE N EDITH TOO !!!!!!
Poor Archie. Signing it made her death complete.
I agree with that
This is just one of the many factors in what killed the series. Norman should've ended the show when Mike and Gloria left.
I understand how Archie feels ive been there myself, but Gloria cant have that check without his endorsement.
Isn't the insurance agent the same guy who played the cop on What's Happening Now? The one who had the son who used to hang out with Rodge Dwayne and Rerun?
