Man this is such a random comment but I found your channel from your retrotink4k comparisons and ended up watching them all for the whole duration while I did gamedev work in the background. Then today I got bored and thought I would try emulation on the Series X, googled guides, this came up and about 20 mins into the video I thought "this dude sounds familiar", checked the name and it realised it was you. I just checked your channel and saw all the guides. I subbed like a month ago for the retrotink4k comparisons but didn't realise I'd stumbled onto this goldmine of a channel. For anyone stuck with the directory page just keep hitting parental until you get to the page hes on, i was stuck for 30 minutes trying to figure it out. And the n64 lock is gonna be under nintendo , hope this helps someone

For anyone getting the payment issue when trying to pay for the dev mode, i was having this issue for like two hours and decided to try it with a new account, and that worked for me! Just make sure all your info is the same all throughout the account and payment process.

Can you show how to manually add thumbnails to the games please? I have a list of thumbnails that I placed in the retroarch folder in thumbnails and the worked (for the most part) when I was using retail but now on dev mode none of the thumbnails I have (E folder) and the ones in the retroarch list (Q folder)are showing up in the thumbnail next to the games even when I manually scan them.

Great tutorial! My only worry so far is that after starting RetroArch, I get a (presumably unrelated) message that "Optional Data Collection is on". Can this not be disabled in dev mode?!

That xbox usb app is a must. Just installs retro arch settings right away. Easier to do than any other game console. Every system should do this. Just pay a fee and be done with it. Instead of jailbreak.

Doesn't the Series S "format for media" option do the same thing? And can I use it to put other downloaded movies/series on still?

I was satisfied with my older build of Retroarch(that I installed with the help of your video) but I’m going to have to reinstall because after Safe Exiting back to retail mode, I got an E200 error and had to factory reset. Even though I pressed the button to keep all games and apps, My Retroarch, safe exit and everything I had in Dev mode had been wiped out. So I’m starting from scratch. Has anyone else here had this problem? How can I prevent this in the future? My wife and brother also experienced this same issue on their respective Xboxes, so we’re all going through the same recovery process.
Hello David, I am not very familiar or knowledgeable with the xbox but I faced this E200 issue aswell while exiting with safe exit. The problem that is probably occuring is that you did not have enough free space on the console (that was the issue for me, i had to delete all and start from scratch). I hope you managed to find the source of the problem.

i had the same issue. I won't install safe exit again. it looks like the auto checked delete everything is no more. When i press leave dev mode,it isn't checked anymore.Maybe they updated dev mode to do so...
Amazing guide! I get to the step to lock the N64 cores. When you select the manage cores menu option a list of .dll files come up, and you select the mupen64plus_next_libretro.dll. For me that list isnt there i Have just for cores for consoles that comes up. What am I missing?

Is there any particular reason as to when I set my hotkeys to start select and save the configuration, it doesn't work at all during in-game? Idk what else to do, I've tried everything. I'm trying to have access to the quick menu so I can play wii games due to not letting me use my Xbox controller.

I used to have to re-do everything every time I updated Retroarch. But then you showed me how to put my saves, save states, and games on a USB instead. I missed somewhere in your videos where I can get my custom controller configs onto USB. Every time I update my Retroarch, I lose all my saved controller configurations. Is that in one of your older videos?

Yeah, I have a config folder on my USB. All my core options and specific saved game options are saved on USB. But for some reason, the controller saves do not. They still reset on every Retroarch update. Can't quite figure that out. @@ArchadesGames

Dev mode is an official Microsoft operating mode for Xbox consoles. Using emulation in retail mode is what is getting banned.
The directory where your cores are stored are different from mine... way different and I followed your video to the letter up until that point. My path was defaulted to "Q:\Users\UserMgr0\AppData\Local\Packages\..." where i noticed your pathway is labeled differently?
Whenever I try to download a core from the core downloader it "says failed to install core."
Wondering if you have any insight? Would really like to play GBA games on my xbox. I have the bios file installed and games on the drive I'm using, it's just no cores install in retroarch

I got all the way to the following step in your guide 20:06 , but once I reached this point my "manage cores" page only shows an "Install or Manage a Core" option, so it appears that for some reason I don't have any cores downloaded by default like the way your guide shows. I went to "online updater" and tried to manually download cores, but I get an error that says: "failed to install core XXX". Any recommendations on what I could do next to get cores successfully installed on retroarch?

I essentially just restarted everything over from scratch and was able to get it to work by having mostly everything downloaded to my Xbox's internal storage except for Roms and Bios which I had on a thumb drive. For some reason doing it that way got the core downloading option to work

They hid that plus button to enter the activation code so well. I never would have known unless you told me.

@@MartySims-qb8xo You should be able to transfer games to a folder on your Xbox. I use a 10 year old ext hard drive on my series x and it works great.

As of April 25th, 2024 (when i did this), using "Leave Dev Mode" does not default check the delete data option! The default method is now basically risk free.

Hey at 17:28 I went into retroarch like you said to config it but when I went to my System/bios all I saw was "Parent Directory, And No Items" I even had my USB plugged into the xbox but for some reason none of the stuff was showing up like yours did please help

So I got to the point where you going to settings inside of RetroArc on your Xbox and then you go down to directory to change the file type I believe to 'f'or whatever it is for you. But for me when I click on it it says parent directory, use this directory, and no items. Those are the only options. I don't know what to do

This latest version seems to be the problem, and I don't know where I can get the previous version. Have you noticed very high latency in games? I've set this up a few times now due to updates, and the Directory setup section always goes a bit too fast, where I need to set the speed to 0.25x. I wrote down which directories get changed and what the values are in the video so it can be easily referenced in the future - if they aren't listed, they weren't changed as far as the video goes!

I've also seen recommendations to lock additional Angle cores in addition to Mupen64 as mentioned in the video. Instructions are as follows below.
Settings > Core > Manage Cores > Lock and Backup the following:
Nintendo - Nintendo 64 (Mupen64Plus-Next)
Nintendo - Nintendo 64 (ParaLLEI N64)
Sega - Saturn (YabaSanshiro)
I'm including Mupen64 for completion's sake and future reference. Personally speaking, I don't know if these additional cores are still necessary to lock and backup, but I'm just bringing this recommendation forward here as I've seen it discussed and referenced to add to the setup tips of my original post.

Hi, I did the setup from an older video where you showed to have a USB for running games or using the console internal memory, I have the internal configuration, do you suggest that I switch my games from internal to USB ? Or just leave it as is right now?
This video has been so helpfull my only question is when im at the step to drag and drop the visual dependency folder in the xbox device portal on my pc it wont place the file in there even when choosing file and doing it manually it wont do it. Theres no error message it just wont do it if i hit start without this file it will fail to complete any help would be awesome

Registration into the partner program always fails when processing payment. I tried two different microsoft accounts and two different credit cards on each. Always gives a "something went wrong, please try again later" error. Contacting Microsoft about the issue is impossible as well, support line (phone) is always a bot who ends up disconnecting the call.

I managed to buy today, basically I tried every day. I think it’s just a matter of buying when the MS servers are working.
Is there a reason why every time i try to accept and continue the account information, it gives me an error that says “Microsoft runs on trust. The drive is incompatible so you have to do it with the manual method.

I've been having so much trouble simply trying to either use another person's save file so that I can replay the story of some games without the extra work for getting money or items. The other one was trying to use the gecko codes on dolphin without making my screen go black and not slow the game at all. But slither way thanks again.

I want to play the old Armored core on my series S, if I buy and use the emulator only in devmode can my Xbox be banned?

Hello! I'm able to get retroarch installed onto Dev mode, complete all the steps and even play a game or two for a little bit. But everytime I come back to dev mode to play again, my menu screen reverts back to the 8-bit style and my USB drive suddenly isn't readable anymore and I can no longer see the games within my folder on retroarch....it happens every single time.
any idea what the problem is? Is it possibly the USB?

the ssd loading times are pretty great. its just annoying to setup compared to using a usb. from what ive experienced, manually installing every rom and bios file to the ssd thru a file explorer on a pc is way more time consuming than using a usb with everything already on it. i could be wrong tho its just my guess.

Nah you nailed it, but to add to it, USB keeps anything important from being deleted due to random BS.

Its been a while for me i remember Dev mode had the cincern of accidentally brick in your console somehow because of storage. I forgot how this was the case.
hi! from your other video, if we choose to use internal storage for the dev mode we had to like "reserve" some space for the games on dev mode so that amount of storage was going to be exclusively used by the dev mode, but that other video got deleted i think, so i wanted to know in what menu do i go to undo that, i wanna use all storage for the retail mode again
Press MENU and then "Manage dev storage"

Is there an 'optimal' size in gigabytes for setting the partition/SSD space to be allocated to Dev Mode, please?

Been looking on forums for an answer but haven’t found anything. I did the install and none of the cores I downloaded load. Every one says “failed to open Libretro core”. This worked perfectly on retail and the dev mode before that.
Do you have the original video for this, I had to reinstall and do not have a USB drive, and need to figure how to do upload games from the PC to the Xbox
Hello, thanks for everything, I used your videos to set up retroarch on my old series S and it was awesome. Now Im trying to apply it to a new one. I cannot continue from 14:40 because there is no option to continue after clicking on advanced. It just simply goes to a screen that offers "hide advanced" and "reload". Any help would be so appreciated, thank you :)
Update: Got it to work, if anyone else has the same issue I had to leave dev mode on my xbox from the initial setup and just restart it, then access the html code. :)

The USB directory structure has a GAMES folder. I notice that MAME is missing. I can add it, but how do you tell Retroarch to look there. Setting that directory was in the video. I didn’t see a MAME tutorial in your playlists
Probably a silly question, but how do you update to a newer version of RetroArch on the Series X? Mine says 1.10. when i see in another video (PS2 Emulation setup) it shows your running 1.16
Is buying a separate Xbox just for emulation necessary, or can I switch from dev back to retail mode whenever?
You can switch whenever you want
But what if you already have an earlier version of retroarch installed this way. Do you have to remove it and do this from scratch or is there another way?
If you have all the mentioned folders on USB you just uninstall the old version and install the new one and redirect the folders.
