  • 6 Things to consider before flying your drone in the Philippines
    Hi everyone, I get asked a lot about traveling with my DJI mavic Pro to the Philippines. I decided to compile some things that you might want to consider or things to know when taking your drone abroad.
    So things to know, of course,
    1. “Safety”, Safety must be your first priority wherever you wanna go, especially in a foreign countries. Be aware of your surroundings, what could go wrong? right?
    2. “Crowd”. Be mindful of crowded areas, having a drone attracts people to surround you. They are lots of curious by standers that want to watch what you’re doing and asks questions.
    3. “Security”. This is a big one, haha. If you remember one of my videos i got escorted by a Security personnel for flying the drone. And also Security meaning will your drone get stolen or lost in the process. Have a plan and be alert of whats around you.
    4. “Rules and Regulations”. Which is tied in almost everything, where you at? is it safe? is it a restricted area? Pretty much same rules and regulations applies wherever you go, i find that US and Philippines are similar to each other. which brings us to next topic.
    5. Permit requirements and registrations. Like everyone else, I was doing research about permits and registrations for flying drones in the Philippines. I went to www.caap.gov.ph didn't get a whole lot of informations. So, what i did is I emailed them and got a quick response…
    Subject: Re: Permit and registrations: small drone for photographers/video
    “There is no need for you to register and get controller's certificate, however, the following operating guidelines must be followed:
    - Shall be used for hobby and recreational only;
    - Shall be used within a community base organization’s safety standard;
    - Shall be used 10km. radius away from Aerodrome Reference Point (ARP);
    - Shall operate within 400ft. Above Ground Level (AGL);
    - Shall stay clear of populated area;
    - Shall not operate RPAS in a controlled or prohibited airspace;
    - Shall not operate night flying;
    - Shall ask permission to the local authority;
    - Shall operate within Visual Line of Sight (VLOS); and
    - Always yield to manned aircraft;
    Assistant Aviation Safety Inspector
    FOD-FSIS, CAAP”
    6. Custom/Airport (common question). This summer I went to the Philippines twice, visited Manila, Palawan, Cebu, Bohol and Boracay. A lot of security airports to deal with, I know. But luckily, I didn’t had any issues or problems going through customs in and out of the US and Philippines. Even through the small airports, what I did do is hand held in one bag the DJI Mavic Pro and all the accessories. So it is visible and easy to access, just in case I need to open or if asks for much thorough investigation. It did help a lot taking the Mavic Pro because of the size in comparison to Phantom 4 or 3DR or other types of drones. I only wish I had the spark then, would probably even easier to carry.
    I hope this answers your questions and help you to have a safe travels to the Philippines with your drone.
    Thank you for watching! Bye for now!

    Hi Ms. Ledanne, great vlog you got here! Thanks for the info above! I got this recent update August 2017 from another vlogger: "Greetings from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines! Please be informed that the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and this Authority had a discussion regarding the importation of Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) or commonly known as drones, to the Philippines. During the discussion, both government agencies agreed that AUTHORIZATION for the importation of drones to the Philippines is no longer required."

    I have entered PI with a P3 last year and a Mavic this year with no problems.
    Keep battery in drone and spare batteries should be wrapped in clear plastic wrap first covering the contacts then stowed in carry on. If you have any information or documents about proper safe battery procedures, carry in the case with drone and batteries for proof. I bought the Mavic because ease of travel, those carry on overhead bins are quiet small. My P3 just barely fit, so you better be at airport gate early so you get an overhead compartment.

    My dad’s friend said he check in the drone so it is easier not to get stopped by customs just bring the batteries with you. So i think that is even a safer route considering I’m going to the Philippines this summer

    LiPo batteries are a concern on airplanes more than the drone itself. Batteries should be less than 50% charged, and if possible they should be in flame proof LiPo bags. I would never put batteries in my checked luggage since airlines are notorious for abusing luggage (if a battery got damaged during their abuse it could burst into flames.) I think the safety precautions we have here in the U.S. are fairly universal, like not flying over crowds of people, not flying over moving vehicles, don't harass wildlife, etc. But it's best to check the rules for where you're going to be flying; like before Aug 1st 2017 flying a camera drone in Sweden required a special "surveillance" license. And countries like Canada is basically a giant no-fly zone (there are few places you can legally fly there.) Most countries don't allow drones in national parks.

    • @Ledanne

    • @DFDuck55

      Canada's drone laws are made by people that know absolutely nothing about drones, and are based on hysteria and fake news (like drones hitting manned aircraft, though there is no "proof" this has ever happened.)

That was THE bag they wanted scanned at customs in Cebu.... but it wasnt a hassle..... and otherwise no issues. I mostly filmed in Dumaguete and Mountain View in Cebu.... no hassles or problems EXCEPT in NYC when I was leaving they checked it for explosives... or at least I think. • @Ledanne
      @Ledanne  Před 6 lety

      Hi Jon, here's the link from FAA www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/fly_for_fun/
      It said "You don't need permission from the FAA to fly your UAS under the Special Rule for Model Aircraft, but you must always fly safely. You may elect to register your UAS to help in the recovery of lost equipment."
      There's new rules that you don't have to register but you still can if you want. If the TSA ask you, you can say it's personal use. The Spark is rrally small, you probably won't have any problem with it. Usually the big drones that they have questions. I hope this help. And good luck on your vacation! Fly safe and enjoy 😊

    Drone Flying Permit here in the Philippines is only needed for Commercial Drones and Commercial use, for instance, if you will use the footages for National Geographic channel, Discovery Channel, Hollywood Movie etc., but so long as it's just your vacation footages, CZcams Footages, It's fine so long as you stay away from Military Bases (the! Are you "Agent Ethan Hunt" spying on Us?), Animal Sanctuaries (They don't want to disturb the bats, birds or other prehistoric flying beast or dinosaurs in there. And of course, airports, since the radio frequencies could interfere with the aircraft (Or your drone might collide with landing airplanes or ufos, etc.)

      Erick Rustan as long as its for personal use you dont need a permit. If for commercial use yes you need to register the drone. Check www.caap.gov.ph. Some basic rules tho, no night flight or flying on too crowded areas, schools, markets and government facilities. Our country has more acceptable drone rules than other countries :)

    Hi Leanne, I am bringing my spark to the Philippines. My questions are the following; 1) do I need a wifi connections to fly my drone , If do how do I get One? 2) Do I need to do anything with the remote control and to the drone itself before I fly it? Thank you. Art

      1. You don’t need wifi to fly it, but if you want you can buy a prepaid sim card and do unlimited data for about $20-30/month as long as you have unlock phone.
      2. Just make sure you have the cable to connect your phone to the remonte control, spark didn’t have that included so you have to buy it separately. For the drone just have xtra batteries, make sure it’s up to date for the software and calibrated properly.
      Good luck! 😊

    Hover has a very very low review Rate. Only 1.6. Might pay to look for a better app.
