The thing is Philippines actually tried pivoting from US to China. Our former president was openly campaigning for a shift from US to China-Russia Alliance.
His administration also prioritized Belt and Road Initiative projects. China just got more bold in their incursion. They used this opportunity to survey possible resources and strategic locations. They put structures near our military bases. They even found possible locations for oil drilling operations. Also there's a market in China for rare, endangered corals. This causes them to dredge coral reefs, destroying the Aquatic biodiversity in the area. We found out the hard way that the more we listen to them, the more they will intrude. and they never considered peace and cooperation.
The Philippines is just too strategic of a location, it has raw materials as well. A mouth-watering treat for any burgeoning power.
    The Spanish Empire knew this.
    The British Empire knew this
    The United States knew this.
    The Japanese Empire knew this.
    The Islamic State knew this

China sent a fleet pass Japan's Tsugaru Strait, which is between Japan main island and Hokkaido, during covid after Japan set some restrictive policies against China. Tsugaru Strait is deemed as national waters only because Japan wanted to give convenience to commercial convoys so they pulled back borders of their territorial waters, and here comes China driving their navy fleet through. What a great way to exploit other people's kindness, and proves China would not hesitate to provoke other nations in their waters if possessing the capability.

I read Chinese and I see all the war mongering articles put out on Global Times and Xinhua News ok? That's why I see far more aggression from China because their state news head editor says things like "If we lose a war, we gonna nuke the Earth''s core and take the world with us" and all the comments bellow praises this kind of speech ok? And there was a trend for pubs throwing parties celebrating assassination of former JP prime minister.
Also, you should really read through my words or go see a map, passing Tsugaru Strait is not "near Japan", it's literally crossing through the middle. it's like driving into Sulu sea of the Philippines level.

This seems very harmless and reasonable at first glance, however this is the same reason why they're unable to see the bigger picture. Let's take the Philippine history for example. We've been enslaved in our own motherland for 300+ years because our ancestors were blinded by the cross, mirrors, clothing etc that the "friendly" Spaniards has to offer.. making them unable to see real intentions of these conquistadors. Ordinary citizens like me wont budge more on the issues because its too complex to solve. The existing UNCLOS law that supposedly protect the country is not absolute and any powerful member like China can tend to ignore its ruling. As result even if China won't recognize it does big economies put sanctions to China? The reality is that they tend to ignore the win of the Philippines and China continue to claim the WPH and big economies continue to do business with China.
The only possible definite solution is that we make Philippines super rich, technologically advance and deterrence capable military to China and we cannot do that if we cannot make it to advance economy and technologically advance. In fact the country is infested with social issues and environment sustainability issues that its even harder for the country to advance and even compete with its faster advancing neighbors.

I think what we Filipinos need to accept and understand is that either ways there is no safe zone for us between the two Behemoths. There shouldn't be an option in the first place. Either way we will be endangered if one of the two big country decides to exert their power towards us. For me the best approach is to see the present situation of each country in terms of leadership, action towards other foreign countries, and lastly if they are following through actions. Historical evidences shouldn't even be a basis that's like saying we shouldn't trust Mongolia for having Genghis Khan as their ancestor, or Rome because of Julius Ceasar or Germans for having Adolf Hitler. Each era have different circumstances, have different sets of world leader and different world order and the now is no more than different. The real threat is an evil person to hold that kind of power sooner or later. We all just want a safer and peaceful world.

This is a misleading media report, ask Mexicans if China or the US is more of a threat to them. The so-called geopolitics, of course, is that neighboring countries are more likely to create a sense of psychological deterrence. The correct comparison is to ask whether the threat of China attacking the Philippines because of the South China Sea dispute is greater, or whether the United States illegally intervenes in the Taiwan Strait dispute and uses the Philippine base to attack China, causing the Philippines to be attacked by China. The threat is greater.

Here are my takes in this issues:
    1. We don't really mind who will rule the world in the future. We all know that this war is all because of world dominance.
    2. If China will just be friendly to us Filipinos and honor our claims which is just within our natural territory? We will be surely closer to Chinese people. If China will just avoid aggression and give us what we claimed? We might end up helping the Chinese to secure their intentions.
    3. We (Filipinos) all know that China need this so called 'South China Sea". They need it for trades amd homeland security. They need to dominate this sea inorder to secure their future route. But, they don't need to be aggressive and water Canon or chase our small fisherman's boats just to impose their dominance.
    4. I my self have my mainland Chinese blood runs through my vain (my great-grandfather was a migrant during China's great famine). But if China will forcefully take what is closer to us, or what is rightfully to us? I definitely welling to die for my country.
    5. We don't need American military presence in our land. We Filipinos always have a chilling impressions regarding having American military base AGAIN in our country. If China read and study our history? We kicked out American bases because we don't really need them. But if China will continue these aggressively? China should know (if they study Phils war history) that despite our short comings regarding armaments and manpower? We Filipinos don't give up. We will fight tell the end, we always have. Spain 333yrs, US for decades, Japan despite superior and more advanced. We can drag China down economy if war will happens, yes we might suffer more, but definitely China economy will never be the sam again eafter this war.
    Conclusions:
Look, we all know that in order for China to take the number 1 superpower from US is either to go to war? Or to wait till they surpass US economy and world dominance. With these? China should avoid bullying other smaller nations just to reiterate their dominance. China should increase their deplomatic ties especially with their neighboring countries. For sure Philippines will be the first nation to back them up. For the reasons that we have more Chinese mixed blood than any Western world. We have the oldest China town. With that said. May we all live in peace and prosperity and be guided with grace by our ancestors and may God bless us with his holy wisdom. Salamat po!

If anyone cares to truly look into the history of both countries they will see that America loves war and China loves business. Both are in it for their own self interest which makes both of them bad for the Philippines, but America's roots of being abusive to the rights of other countries where there are people of color stands out like a sore thumb. In Africa America backed the Apartheid regime, and they come and do things to a country which is not legal for them to do in their country on purpose knowing the damage they are causing to the ecosystem. Look at what the US did to South America as they just covered up the oil with dirt and said , "We cleaned it up." But one thing is clear is America will go to war on false pretenses and then after they get what they want leave the people to fend for themselves knowing that they totally disarmed those people and somehow the US sleeps well at night.

It resulted in 4,519 dead, of whom 4,193 were killed outright and 326 were forced to commit suicide., Beginning with the Red August of Beijing, massacres took place nationwide, including the Guangxi Massacre, in which massive cannibalism also occurred; the Inner Mongolia incident; the Guangdong Massacre; the Yunnan Massacres; and the Hunan Massacres. Almost 90,000 people were counted as dead or missing and presumed dead in the final official Chinese government assessment; the officially reported total killed included more than 5,300 children, the bulk of them students attending classes. They were whipping, flogging, hard labour, exile and capital punishment. Death was still the ultimate price to pay, but gone were the cruel and unusual ways to die. However, Mao's government was responsible for vast numbers of deaths, with estimates ranging from 40 to 80 million victims due to starvation, persecution, prison labour, and mass executions, which drew criticism for being considered totalitarian rule. Death toll. The excess mortality associated with the famine has been estimated by former CCP officials and international experts, with most giving a number in the range of 15-55 million deaths.

The 'Great Leap Forward'-famine in China from 1959-61 was the single largest famine in history in terms of absolute numbers of deaths. Excess mortality estimates vary hugely, but based on our midpoint estimates, it cost more than double the number of lives than any other famine.

There is no free lunch. The US is not coming to protect the Philippines because it loves the country and its people. Far from it. It wasn't too long ago, the US was a staunch supporter of Ferdinand Marcos, a well-known dictator who ruled the Philippines ruthlessly. Now his son is back in power, and promised to be different to his father. Well, does the old saying "like father, like son" still work??
The Philippines was under the US's radar for some time thanks to ex-President Rodrigo Duterte who saw right through the US, and its true intents when it comes with gifts and warships. Now Ferdinand Marco's son is in charge, and he is warming up to the Americans once again, like his father. The US is worried about China. It is busy establishing alliances of military pacts like the AUKUS and the QUAD. India is the new best friend of the US now. Not too long ago, PM Modi was banned from entering the US for human rights violations. That is the degree how quickly the US prepares to turn around when it suits it, or when it can use it.
Like Ukraine, the presence of US influence hasn't done the country any good. I just hope that the nice, gentle Filipinos won't suffer the same fate as the Ukrainians now endure...deaths and destruction.

Now instead of the defunct USSR, it is with China. That is also how most of these Filipinos think because of the effect of leftist teachers espousing their ideology.
The difference with China and the USSR is that we have an actual dispute with China that can turn violent. Even without the USA, and especially without them, we are actually in a very disadvantaged position against our stance against China.

Filipino-American here. I’m find the opinions of all the interviewees interesting. Yes, the U.S. colonized the Philippines, but it eventually game the Filipinos their independence. On another note, which I didn’t hear discussed… it’s not like the U.S. has never helped the Philippines militarily. My grandmother was in her 20’s during WWII and witnessed the hell enacted by the Japanese at that time. The U.S. did their best to help the Filipinos at that time. Obviously the U.S. was also fighting for its self interest at the time (they needed to systematically remove the Japanese from basically every island it captured at that time in order to win the war), but it’s not like the U.S. didn’t help the Philippines. A lot of U.S. aid paid for the reconstruction of the Philippines after that war. This of course is all history, but if we’re for going to talk about the bad things the U.S. did, we should also remember some of the good as well. Mabuhay!

What's interesting is that even with US propaganda talking all the time about China invading Taiwan, the Okinawans still demonstrated every year to get the US military bases out.
There's a reason for this, when the US military is there in large numbers they treat the locals like dirt. Everytime decade after decade. He doesn't want to be a Moldovia or rushing to apply for Nato membership like Finland and Sweden. Instead, he's building up a deterrent and bringing the Philippines into an alliance with the US, Japan, South Korea, Australia and of course, Nato countries will be along for the ride as well as many other countries, if we see war break out in that region.

The 50 years of history before the Philippines became a country was written by the Americans, what do you expect them to know?
The Chinese have been fighting hard since the Opium War. It cost hundreds of millions of people, but now we don't have to speak English, we don't get controlled by religion, and we don't have a foreign garrison raping Chinese women. As for fully colonized areas like the Philippines, the "English-speaking" guy in the video is an example. The idea of a lamb is not something that a dragon can understand.

I have to agree with the fillipinos on this. Historically, the facts are laid out on the table, and doesn't paint a pretty picture for America.
Then again, America repeats history, and never learns from it. But bear in mind, its the unscrupulous politicians who are always reniging on agreements, and backstabbing.
It occured as recently as in Afghanistan with the northern alliance with the Kurds. The shit hits the fan, and we start losing against China. Which is not surreal, America will bail out as it usually does, and leave these islanders to hang out and dry.

that logic don't necessary hold true. europe have been at war with each others for thousand of years and so is Asia. how Philippine became Philippine? china became these big because they go and conquered smaller state(country) and absorbed it. back then the "Philippines" conquered smaller states too. Asian's greatest enemy is not European but it's Asian. European biggest threat is themselves.
