Project Comp V2 - Modified Schwinn Al Comp - Turning a Walmart Bike into a Trail Beast MTB

- Project Bikes on KevCentral are based on budget bikes from Walmart. I find bikes I think have promise and modify them into trail capable true mountain bikes. Project Comp V2 is based on the 2020 Schwinn Al Comp and is a successor to my successful 2019 Al Comp modifications: Project Comp.
This build turned into a more refined and attractive MTB than the original, which was itself a very capable mountain bike. Check out the video and comment below with your thoughts on Project Comp V2.

I will say this now. If you want to spend money at a bike shop for a bike shop bike, good for you. If you want to upgrade a bike like this, Good for you. There is no right or wrong in this hobby. I love my project Trailhawk (Walmart bike) and I love how this one turned out with it's coloration.
Well said.
100% thank you.
More about available initial funds imo. Nothing wrong with starting on the cheep. But if you have the funds to start better it’s a much better experience initially.
@@kyleslater5245 Good way to look at it.
I agree. Just like my bike i bought already completed but it has some entry level parts on it so i upgrade all of the parts in a span of 7 months actually there is this joy i felt when upgrading the bike that a complete bike doesn't have
If Wal mart had offered these bikes back when I bought my Trek Marlin 6 last October I would have gotten this instead. This would easily fit my type of riding- no jumping/x-games type stuff. Just pedal around town and light trail use green and blue flow trails. I did get a deal on my Trek Marlin 6 though, I got it for $550 instead of the $650 because it was on sale.
I recently saw a Gira Terreno by Ozone at Academy Sports for $350 and honestly it runs circles around the Al Comp. I had a Taff before and it was nice but the quality of the components was lacking.
@@TonyHob Wow. That is an impressive looking bike. It looks to have some decent components.
Most bikes under 1k kinda just suck for anything aside from light trail riding, they aren't designed to be ridden off any trail features or serious technical riding.
voler_1 I bought a 2010 Gary Fisher Marlin for my fiftieth birthday, about $750ish, I think. I raced it in the beginner class until I medaled and had to move up to category 3. I ran about three or four cat 3 races before an injury (unrelated to racing) forced me to quit. Could I have been faster with a more expensive bike? Probably, but I already had the Marlin, and it held up very well in spite of the fact that I weighed about 220 pounds at the time. I broke a chain and had to replace the cassette about five years ago, after approximately 1000 mile of aggressive off-road riding. As a matter of fact, I tested out a new section of trail with it yesterday. You are right about one thing though; it sucks on downhill rock gardens.
@@carljohnson4691 I raced sea otter Ontario on a 2017 trek marlin 6, came 3rd overall in my age category (I was 15 at the time) but the whole time it rattled me to death, and it was overall just a really unpleasant riding experience, it's possible but it's just not pleasant. I now have a Yt Capra and I'm easily taking podium in Enduro races, the rider matters more then the bike, but the bike can make a huge difference.
I work at a bike shop and a GT came in. It came with a big box from amazon, filled with a bunch of parts i had seen recommended by you, super fun to build.
The best part is the box bike snobs that have to admit this is a cool bike... 😎 👍
Cool means nothing.
@@MichaelRei99 says you.. the Fonze says different
@@MichaelRei99 You're not cool, are you?
Mike R. It means a lot id ride a slightly “worse” bike if it was much cooler
Mike R. || On paper, sure. Cool is pointless. In reality though, someone would be more likely to ride their bike often if they enjoy it, and cool factor is a pretty big part for a lot of people. Even if it's objectively worse, the enjoyment is the main focus.
This is NOW my favorite Kev video! Really fantastic stuff here. Thank you for continuing to create such AWESOME content! We really appreciate you, sir.
Preach brother haha. We have such a huge smile on our faces when you address the viewers "why not just buy a more expensive bike" comments. Nice build man. Thanks for the video.
You two should do a collab project one of these days... that'd be pretty cool. Do part of the build on one channel and the other part on the other channel or something. IDK, but I think it would be cool
@@jasonsierchio1167 Hey thanks man, but we don't bring enough to the table yet. Maybe one of these days. Besides nobody wants to clean up the mess we make haha.
Wolftick. Love your channel
@@jasonudovich8880 Thanks man!
That’s not what he said, clean out your ears.
I just finished my 1x upgrade on my santis just in time for a race this weekend. Thanks Kev your videos helped inspire me to upgrade my schwinn and get out there more.
I’ve watched every budget bike video you’ve put out and have been patiently waiting for any of them to come available again. Finally today I purchased the Al Comp for my gf and I. I plan on my own project with this bike. Thanks for putting these videos out for us who aren’t ready to spend bike shop money, but want to get out and ride something competent.
I bought an Al Comp after seeing your videos back in May! I’ve put on an Epixon air fork, IXF crankset, an XT rear hub, and a Box 3 Prime 9 11-50t drivetrain. I’m glad you finally finished yours! I waited all summer to see what you’d come up with!
Thanks Kev for the much needed perspective. People often don't realise how big an inhibitor cost is to go into mountain biking. If people understand that they can get into the sport within a budget, the sport can be enjoyed by more.
Thank you for the videos you do. I just turned 49 a few weeks ago. I bought this bike and have thoroughly learned a lot. I have not ridden a bike in 30 years so I am new to the mtb thing. I've done some small upgrades so far. Really appreciate the links to parts you provide.
Keep up the good work. I find your videos to be a treasure trove of information.
This is awesome. I wish the stores in my part of the world sold something like this. Looking forward to future videos. Keep up the good work.
Congrats on almost 100k subscribers. All this bike needs is a dropper post and it will be a legit trail shredder.
not even done watching but so stoked for this!
Loving watching these videos. And I’m loving the bikes looks, it’s a nice touch to really make the bike your own.
lovely filming.👌 nice close-ups, smooth, well done.
Best part of a bike shop bike is you get to support a bike shop, not box stores and online Chinese retailers. I love the customization, but give your local shop some love and money and start with one of their budget bikes. It’s not about the brand, it’s about helping a small business in your community.
Man such videos are so satisfying to watch. A moment of silence for people on 5000$ bikes
Good to see you getting back to your roots! This is the kind of content I subscribed for but I understand the difficulty you must have had with securing the right components.
Awesome video, the bike looks sweet! I really dig all the red
Great build! I'd be happy riding this on my local trails. Hopefully Walmart sees your videos so they get inspired to use some of these components in future bikes.
I now ride single speed bikes, as I live in a hill-less major city, but I still have my old beater Schwinn 'MTB' from when I was a kid. This channel has inspired me to update it with some modern 1x cranks and gizmos, thanks Kev! Should be a fun around-town snow bike.
A whole 8 lbs! That crankset def was worth the upgrade. Love the color match!
I always tell people when buying a bike, Geo and fit are king. Don't buy a bike for the spec sheet because everything on a bike could be considered a consumable, but the frame is the heart of the bike.
Thanks Kev. Bike is looking very nice.
Been waiting for this update forever! Looks great and hope to build something similar on day
Closing in on 100k subscribers. Congrats to you.
Great build and video Kev!
Good to see u back Kev... i own this bike thanks to you .. i went with a lil higher o. Upgrades than the $50 that u mentioned prior ... im happy with my purchase , so thanx again
Get one of these bad boys tomorrow, can't wait to start riding again and upgrade as I go love you videos keep up the amazing work 👍
Advent X is so good. Threw one on my wife's Specialized Pitch, and it is so smooth, and climbs like a rocket. Great sound and feel on the shift too.
Aluminum Comp V2 looks great. Wonderful upgrades, can’t wait to see it with the air fork in its final form.
Awesome looking bike, I still love this channel and all the content you put out Kev
Looks like capable entry level trail bike to me! Nice vid and even better build!
Great project. You forgot to say; to those that tell you you could have bought this bike or that bike for the same money ....that the thrill and joy of the project process is priceless.....👍
Great video and keep up with the upgrades. I love it!
Nice bike build 👌, love that this channel is growing
I've been waiting for any Schwinn bike to come back to restock, finally local walmart had it, placed order! Now its waiting for box to arrive! Oh the anticipation is killing me! Super excited for alcomp!
Looks really great. One of your best Projects !
Looking good! My Al Comp is coming along as well, got the same XCR fork, and just finished installing the IXF crankset and an 32T oval chainring. Other mods done and more still to come! This thing rides awesome!! Thanks for your vids! Keep em coming!
What size headset did you use? Both upper and lower if you don’t mind. Thank you
Just subbed as I just purchased a used al comp. Nice to know its a decent platform for a novice. Now on to more....
Man that’s a good looking bike ! Nice work as always .
So I bought this bike a few weeks ago to upgrade over the next year instead of buying a Trek or Specialized. After my son helped me assembled it I noticed an added benefit of taking the upgrade approach. Four things actually: 1.) my son wanted to help me do something 2.) he actually put his phone down 3.) learned some mechanical skills 4.) had fun the whole time...this is worth any amount of savings or frustration ahead. Keep doing what you're doing Kev...it's having more impact than you may think.
I cant find this bike anywhere for sale. Where would I get one?(Where did you get yours)
Well done... Looks amazing Kev! I'd love to see what you could do with 2020 Boundary!
awesome project (as always). thank you for this content!
I'm having fun learning trail riding. I have learned a lot by watching your efforts: THANK YOU for that.
I studied components for months and almost bought a Walmart mountain style to learn trail cycling. Lucky for me the available store bikes (Schwinn Al Comp) were so poorly assembled that I went to a real bike shop called Berts and test drove a few Trek bikes. The Berts effort taught me a bit about frame size, hydraulic braking, fork shocks and derailleur quality. Before I committed to purchase I then discovered Polygon from bikesonline and decided on 2021 Polygon Xtrada 6 2x11 (Size: L- 27.5inch Wheel). The shipment packing was exceptional and I'm very happy with the component performance.
I'd say the only detraction of ordering from Bikesonline is that there is no test drive before purchase, however their return policy is generous so I felt it was worth the risk.
I enjoy learning the sport and maintenance of the bike but I wouldn't be comfortable spending money on upgrades like you do. It appears to me that the components costs, tools, labor and risks contradict the rewards; I'd rather search for the completed product. Bike mechanics can be fun but also unreasonably expensive.
I've become a big fan of the IXF Crankset thanks to you. I have them on two bikes now. I've also been happy with the Wake and Acekit cockpit upgrades on 3 bikes now.
The grips are VERY similar to dmr deathgrips
I was thinking that! Been running the DMR for a bit and love em
And those peadals are raceface Chester's
Thank god I wasn't the only one who noticed that! I've been running deathgrips for a couple months with no plans of ever changing to other grips
most of these parts are cheaper knock offs of good parts
Well done video.
I've had a al comp since June of last year and I've been slowly modifying it it's coming out nice
Another great video! I have an entry level XC bike and you have given me some ideas!
I followed almost exactly the same formula with the 2020 AL,Comp I lucked out and picked up in March. Except I found a new unsold Fox 32 Evolution Kashima air fork from 2015! Tapered but also QR. This is an awesome awesome bike now.
What’s the widest tire you can fit?
@@mr.jackson8603 not sure. 2.25 or even a 2.50 maybe.
DUDE! I love this bike! F'n awesome... good job man
I love those marquee grips as well, I’ve been riding those for about four months and they have really held up well
Nothing more satisfying than upgrades.
Looks awesome, thanks for the video
Looks good man! I searched high and low for one of these to do a similar build so I could have a 27.5 to complement my Taff. Finally gave up and bought a frame to build ground up. Missing just a couple parts now. I like the red you did but my plan was blue as well. I did a light blue with the taff that I think looks good.
I also like how you got the red blend in with the frame that is really cool awesome
The challenge of finding the parts (and finding them cheap) is part of the fun. I bought a rusted GT Palomar for $50, sanded it, primed and ready for paint. Assembling parts from other donor bikes and ebay along the way. Did it cost me more than 4x the cost of the rust bucket I bought? It sure did. But the finished bike will be something I laid hands on and kept out of the dumps.
Nice project! Would love alerts on when these and other models are available.
She's a beaut! Love the vids, please keep em coming!
I want one of your gorgeous builds so bad it's like lust. They beautifully evolve to the level of being art, like a canoe, a revolver, or the Bowie knife. If I ever hit the lottery I'll want to get a Jeep or a Hummer, and one of your Bikes.
Style points for red! :))) Great job, great video ,great bike! LIke it ! :)
Awesome video! Love your content!
Awesome build in the process of doing the same one
I’m gonna copy this build. I just want to thank you. Thanks for everything in this video in your other videos. I’m going to try and remake this build right here except I’ll be doing it on a huffy Walmart mountain bike. I’ll have to get a different fork because the huffy has a straight fork shaft. I may even make a video of all my upgrades. But thanks for everything. great videos keep going strong
It's a great looking bike, Kev!
The finishing touches to my trek marlin was a set of nukeproof neutron v2 36t. They are loud. I had to buy the rear first, then the front. The rear was 240 with free shipping. Then I ordered the front for 150 with shipping cost about 2 weeks later. The rim set is wide to help with traction of the tire. It get rid of the bulb shape to the tire. They are 29mm inner and 33mm outer.
I love these videos keep them up
Been upgrading my Walmart hyper e bike . Grips , seat , peddles, hydraulic brakes , custom wrap job , manitou forks, tires , now I’m just waiting for all the parts to get here to start putting it all back together.
looks slick Kev. Not bad at all. That 10x is a life saver i bet. and you shed a LOT of weight too. nice!
Love the perspective and inclusion of "box bikes"
Greatly done...hoping to purchase my first bike here soon
I enjoy ur content, Kev
That is going to be a great bike after you upgrade that fork. Great Video Kev!!
Not bad for such a cheap bike, well done Kev! :)
I wish I would have found this channel sooner 😂. I would have bought one of these and upgraded as I go. Now I'm stuck not riding waiting for the Rockhopper sport I ordered to come in lol. I'm super mechanically inclined and nothing I own is stock. This would have been a great starting point. I will be using the IXF crank set on my Rockhopper.
Man! This is a great looking bike!
The wait was worth it for this video. Now if they could get the Schwinn Comp back in stock as I have been trying for months to buy one! Luckily I was able to pick up a Schwinn Boundary and have been riding it but still waiting on the Comp.
I love the red and I just got the same Vick I will keep this video in mind so I can upgrade it over time😀
I meant to put bike
Love it! Wish I could find those wheels. I knew you would end up with the X setup.
Kev! This is crazy nice! Crazy!. Make photos and send to the GMBN England. Put the specs a costs and you will still be more praised for the style and performance! Neat!
Woah kev, when i last saw you you were on 30k subscribers... almost at 100k now good job 👍👍
I was @ 3k followers
I have a new project in the stand. It's an old Trek 7.4 hybrid (a bike I never really liked) which is becoming a gravel bike. Unlike previous projects, I am doing this cheaply -- really to see what I can do with spares and modestly-priced parts. Fortunately, I have a drivetrain made of leftovers from previous upgrades. But I picked up an IXF crankset (in blue). I must say that I'm impressed. It has one little burr that I filed off to help the chainring sit flush, but that's easy. I have a Deore BB sitting about; but maybe I should try the generic one that came with the crank.
You ain't kiddin' about brakes. If you want hydros, you are paying full price. Since my shifters are Sora R3000 that got orphaned in an upgrade, I have to go mechanical. Finding Spyre calipers was not easy. And, have you noticed the price of integrated shifters lately? I am glad that I did not need to buy those. Crazy expensive.
Derailleurs are available and not crazy. But the 7.4 has a 9-speed Deore derailleur. That should work fine with Sora shifters and can handle a wide range cassette.
I was waiting to watch thiss...good one!
I'm excited for the microshift acolyte, it's 8speed groupset but it actually has a clutch!
I have a mongoose 29’er that I’ve done a few similar things to. After tuning up a Schwinn comfort bike, though, I see why you’d pick them to use for a project. Even for a “budget bike” they do have much better quality.
I just took my bike to get upgrade I’m excited to see what it does. New forks hydro brakes and new cassette and making it a one by
Sweet bike! Great job!
I'd love to do something like this with my entry-level Marin Bolinas Ridge 1. Mostly, I'd love to get rid of the 3x7 and go to a 1x10. Great video!
Great project! Losing 7lbs on the bike is more fun than losing it off my body.
I don't know why the dislikes. KEV does a great job at narrating and explaining the rational behind the build. Gosh I betcha the haters are elitist that want to pay 5G for a bike.
I have my 2019 marlin 5 down to 28lbs. But I've spent $1600+ cad on the bike and upgrades. Rides like a dream.
I'm planning to upgrade my Schwinn Taff 29er this year. I've already made a list of parts and accessories to put in it and it totals to roughly around $800 (excluding the price of the bike). I mean, you're right that people will really tell you to buy a decent bike around that price range but upgrading a budget bike to me is like projecting your character and personality into the bike without breaking the bank. I mean, I'll be happy with it and my savings will be happy too. Lol!
love these vids!
One of the best budget seats is the EC90. It is amazingly comfortable and light. I have put is 300 miles on it and it’s still going strong. It’s a steal for $30 on Amazon.
Looks great 👍🏼
I have a al comp I got used for 75 bucks put a sr suntour fork on the front with a 29er to make a mullet bike I love it
Sweet looking ride.
Definitely sharp looking.😎
