    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 3 lety +1

      My opinion is gravity system is better all round, but I didn't have that option mate, where the filterhouse is there are utility pipes/drains, I had to have one moved si I could get the pond in (right headache) on reflection I could have probably fitted something in the pump house but you know how it is best plans and all that 😬. Gives me the incentive to build another pond maybe 🤔

    Bit of a complicated and time consuming process but certainly seemed to do the trick. I'm fortunate that my filters are gravity fed through a 4" bottom drain directly into a vortex. I close the valve between the bottom drain and vortex, drain the vortex to remove any accumlated waste then open the valve to the drain and a huge rush of water floods the vortex bringing with it any debris that may have accumlated in the drain line. The pond is 5.5 ft deep and the inlet to the vortex approximately 3 ft below water level so lots of pressure to flush the drain. I clean my vortex every week so a bottom darin purge is part of the weekly process. Whole thing takes about 5 minutes to do.

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 3 lety

      To be fair it doesn't normally take long to do, the filming probably made it look so, I agree gravity is preferable but wasn't an option for me, although I have seen others with gravity systems that still power wash to remove even more debris. Thanks for watching stay safe 👍

    • @themilksnatcher
      @themilksnatcher Před 3 lety +1

      Not everyone can have the luxury of a gravity fed system. My pond is ground level and it was here when we brought the house. So there is no way I can dig 5 foot down to sink a nexus and sieve into the ground

    Thanks for this really useful. I am building a new pond using a round plastic liner. I currently have a nexus that is pump fed and don’t want to dig down for the filter house so I can retain the pump fed system. I want a bottom drain though so was wondering if you can pump feed one like you have!

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi mate without knowing more details of your intended setup its difficult to give a complete answer however you can just either pump or gravity fed from a bottom drain if your pond is above ground them a gravity fed system would be better. If pond is in the ground and you don't want to dig for the filter then so long as the pump is below water lever then pump fed will work. Andy👍

    • @WheresMyPencilUK
      @WheresMyPencilUK Před 2 lety +1

      @@DerbyKoi thanks Andy. Yeah it will be a circular liner thats 1.2m deep with about 30cm protruding above ground. So should be fine really for a pumped setup with pump below water level.

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 2 lety

      I have fitted a purge pipe to clean the drain pipework which you'll see this fri and I would advise a ball valve to isolate the pond incase you need to change or work on your filters or god forbid leaks

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 3 lety +1

      I haven't mate, I've found the powerwash does a great job and doesn't take long, it looked more involved on the video because of filming, in reality it only takes a few mins, I like the bendy brush idea though for smaller pipework maybe 🤔. Thanks for watching stay safe 👍

    So Am i right in thinking your bottom drain is only “purging” at the rate of the pump via the small diameter pipe work? rather than 4” pipe work with the value opened and purged via gravity? Appreciate the muck in your bucket but how’d you really know how clean your bd pipe work is? Why don’t you purge after your ball valve outside via a T piece?

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  Před 3 lety +1

      Your correct I'm purging at pump rate, but that's 10000 litres of water being drawn through a pipe which has been power washed, there is no way if knowing how clean it is without putting a camera through the system but I very much doubt it would be any cleaner than just opening a 4" tap and purging via gravity, but I appreciate your comments stay safe 👍
