Dmitry Kabalevsky - Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Major, Op. 50; "Youth"

- Soviet Russian composer Dmitry Kabalevsky’s Third Piano Concerto is a sunny and exhilarating work written for the young performer. It demonstrates virtuosity while staying safe within the bounds of a student’s technical ability. The concerto, like much of Kabalevsky’s work, is rather conventional, diatonic, and generally adheres to common practice methodology. It is as Romantic as any given painting of a group of peasant workers, visibly tanned and with tools in hand, standing tall with their fists raised, looking up toward the sun which, like an Orthodox halo, envelops a beaming portrait of some totalitarian Great Leader.
The first movement begins with dramatic fanfare, and is followed by a wildly joyous expositional melody. Even with all the jubilation, there are deep brooding sections that call back to the style of Rachmaninoff. A hectic piano cadenza is situated in the center of the piece, preceding the recapitulation.
The slow second movement is substantially more restrained in comparison to the first and third. The pizzicato string notes tiptoe around the somber melody played on the piano. The melody, played in two voices, is doubled with the difference of an octave. The mood quickly changes from solemn to serene, when a pastoral tune in the virgin key of C emerges from the gloom. In the same section, the tune is modulated through the keys of an augmented chord and developed into multiple distinct textures, including the shimmering harp-like passage when in the A-flat. It is concluded with a Tchaikovskian descent.
The third movement is, once again, very swift. The merry mood from the first movement returns, with even more spirit and agility than before. The mischief is interrupted by a strict but elegant march. Prior to the coda, a lush theme from the first movement reappears with great pomp and circumstance.

Can I just say that the orchestra lines up with the solo piano part SO WELL
frrr
Kabalevsky, a beginner's best friend
I played the first movement in school, teacher played the orchestral part. Such a joy!
I also am playing this piece, it is truly a wonderful piece tho
Hey im thinking of trying to learn this piece for a soloist contest (11th grade) what do you guys think? Is it suitable for 11th grade?
I’m in 3 grade
I played it in my primary school. Its so useful for me to at seven to then work on bigger pieces like busoni concerto etc

played the 1st mvt of this ~6 yrs ago (at a much much slower tempo lmao) - how the time flies
really nice to hear that movement in the context of the rest of the concerto
9:00 that’s beautiful
The melody from 9:01 in the second movement is Kabalevsky’s song called “The Homeland” («Край родной, навек любимый»)
Sunny is a great adjective for this
The best performance for this concerto
Like so much of this composer's music there is a sunny cast to much of what he composes.
If u is reading this soupy, I still remember when this piece only had 1k views

Thanks for the score video. Such an interesting style, loved the climax.
That transition at 15:54 is so random and unexpected
You just have this entire dramatic march theme end in B-flat minor and then you somehow just get the main theme of the 3rd movement back without any transition whatsoever
... yeah, sounds like he didnt care/ was bored to make a transition there. Felt so rushed and kinda bad. Welp, whatever.
Un concerto très original , un compositeur inventif ... L'ensemble est vraiment plaisant .
The main theme in the 1st movement reminds me of Mozart.
One of most precious videos o fyour Chanel!
The piano in the first movement sounds like easy Rachmaninoff :D 0:44 - 0:53
yup strong rach vibes here for sure
Also congrats on 1k soupymold! =)
Currently learning this piece! It's not too bad except when you get to the first part of the Candenza lol! Thanks for the video!
Great concerto
Thanks :)
beautiful concerto !!
great piece
Tremendo compositor...
Cadenza is very reminiscent of Liszt's 15th Hungarian Rhapsody
unfortunately the only good recording on youtube with modern standards of sound quality
This is amazing
I'm also playing the first movement for festival and recital
I F 2 of his Piano Sonatas were so interesting for Horowitz to play in recitals....I am not surprised how attractive thus unpretentious Concrrto is 😅
Nice.

Nice!
Would be great to learn this, regardless of age
This is a concerto intended for children but this a performance of a very professional pianist so I don't think it is a model for children.
I've memorized the whole 1st movement

Doeas anyone have the score for this? or knows somewhere i can download it from?
You probably won't be able to have free access to the score, as it is still under copyright laws (since it was composed in 1952). But the sheet music is available for purchase on amazon
it could be on imslp
@@UniversalDirp yeah I checked, but it has still copyright as the other comment says so it is only available for purchase. Luckily my maestro had it so problem solved ahah
