My Renault 5 GT Turbo - Walkaround... And Why It Won't Pass Its MOT!

  • We take a walk around my Renault 5 GT Turbo, and have a nose around at the parts under the hood of this car. This is from an era when cars were pretty basic... Traction control and ABS need not apply!
    This car is in pretty decent condition, but despite this will not get through a UK MOT at the moment.... Have a watch of the video to find out why. I'm hopeful we can get it all sorted soon!
    I've always been a huge fan of these cars. So much fun and definitely have a huge cult following!
    Hope you enjoyed and thanks for watching!

    • @TABonTV
      @TABonTV  Před 2 lety

      Cheers Phil! Now is the time to get one if you can as they're 📈 Clutch is a known thing with old Renaults. It's because in the RHD conversion they had to reroute a longer clutch cable which was prone to snapping.

    • @philcliffe6909
      @philcliffe6909 Před 2 lety

      @@TABonTV Yep, they used a plastic part which was replaced with a steel part under a recall. What impressed me was that the recall was after they had stopped production of the GT Turbo. I don't think many manufacturers would do that now. Paid about £6.4k 1 year old and sold it for about £2.4k 4 years later. Had a Metro MG Turbo before that which was also a brilliant little car.

    • @philcliffe6909
      @philcliffe6909 Před 2 lety

      @@TABonTV Interesting fact: When they were developing it they started off with a 1.7ltr engine out of the GTL I think, strapping a turbo to it the power was too much and the frame twisted on testing so they downgraded to the 1.4ltr.

    • @TABonTV
      @TABonTV  Před 2 lety

      @@philcliffe6909 Yeah. I'd heard about that that too. So good that they could do that. Another surprise was my local Renault specialist was able to get hold of an original top radiator hose back in 2017 from inventory!

    If you need parts give GT-Turbo-Spares a call, I would replace the air filter as having the pod filter right next to the turbo is not good. I would get the product recall for the Anti Perc fan done too

    • @TABonTV
      @TABonTV  Před 2 lety

      Know these guys well, already been in touch for a few things. Air filter is fine there, not looking to squeeze out every last bhp with cool air. Heat shield is in great condition.

  • @stevezodiac491
    @stevezodiac491 Před 2 lety

    The reason why gt turbos used to lose grip so fast was that they were over tyred. The width of the wheels was too much for the weight of the car and thus the downward pressure per unit area was very low and the tyres did not ' dig in '. This was not a problem in the dry but in the wet they were dangerous, particularly with the power they had.
    I crashed mine in 1986, got it repaired but then because every body was getting hot hatches stolen at that time, insurance prices went through the roof, so I got rid of mine.
    The tyres on yours do not look as wide as the ones on the car I had though. Still remember the reg
    C430 OTN.

    • @TABonTV
      @TABonTV  Před 2 lety

      That would make sense, a lot of folks put bigger, wider wheels on them so they looked better but that would have had a detrimental effect on the handling. Yeah - the tyres on mine I believe are the same type that came from the factory (Uniroyals). But I generally drive it pretty easy, nowhere near the limits. It's too old for that!

    Looks like it's had the same issue since 2016 on the Fuel tank mot failure.. Little bit of a worry in 2011 : Vehicle structure has slight corrosion (6.1.B.2) But the mileage looks genuine.. the amount I have seen of these that say low mileage and been clocked back 70k miles on ebay. If you can replace that tank do so.. is it really worth the risk of trying the glue a fuel tank back together to save a few quid.
