Such a special band. I was fortunate enough to have been there that day. I’d never heard of them. I’m no “metal” fan (my wife is). It was absolutely incredible. We have seen the five times since, including twice in Japan, & they have been spectacularly good each time. Literally no bad songs in their catalogue.

And… that's how you win over metalheads on your first UK appearance.
Sonisphere can be a really tough crowd if they don't like you.
I can't imagine the strength of nerve it took for a 16 year old Su, and just turned 15 year olds Yui and Moa to take that stage.
And to leave the crowd wanting more. They made some new fans that day.
They followed this up with a headlining concert at The Forum in London two days later.
Their touring musicians are known as the Kami Band.
That was a classic line-up with Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and Leda Cygnus on guitars, BOH on bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums.

This was their first time playing a festival outside of Asia. It's known as the 'Miracle at Sonishpere' because it literally launched them into the worldwide spotlight. Most 15 and 16 year olds would be pretty nervous to perform in front of 60,000 British metalheads, but they killed it. Babymetal were originally scheduled to play on a small side stage, but their Gimmie Chocolate music video had gone viral on CZcams and there was so much buzz around them that they were moved to opening the main stage. A stage that would be where Metallica and Iron Maiden would play on during that festival. In fact, Babymetal sold more merch at that show than any other band, and also made them a name in the metal world.
Babymetal considers the UK their second home since they were so well received and supported their, and performed a couple years later at Wembley Arena, which was also an amazing show. They are at their best live, without a doubt, so if you continue your journey into Babymetal, stick to live performances as much as possible since it's where they shine bright.

It was their biggest show ever but they (almost) all were at this time.

It warms my heart to hear you say Mikio (the guitarist) is insane, because he really was incredible. If you continue down this rabbit hole, you’ll definitely get to hear Mikio’s legacy.
He has sadly passed away in an accident. But his music lives on to hopefully inspire the future of guitarist around the world. R.I.P Mikio Fujioka

@@rob21jj yeah, it really is a tragic story, but he passed away from a fall, doing what he loved the most. And that was stargazing. BABYMETAL have made a song dedicated to him called “Starlight”
But if I had to recommend some songs to showcase Mikio’s solos, I’d say
      1. The Hill of Wisteria - Takayoshi Ohmura (this is only a band solo)
      czcams.com/video/PMJ2RkYkhAA/video.html
      2. Yava - BABYMETAL (this is hands down my favourite Mikio solo ever. I’ve never gotten chills from a solo before this)
      czcams.com/video/hzORBpySTIs/video.html
      3. Catch Me If You Can - BABYMETAL (also a great solo and a great song to listen to)
      czcams.com/video/ugnyM69LN54/video.html
Mikio is the first solo in all of the songs, and his most recognisable featured is the “Mikio smile” a smile that warms you, just looking at it.
I’m sorry for this long message. But the songs are really worth checking out on your own at least if you won’t upload them.

@@rob21jj all their songs are competent. And they perform the hell out of them every time. So every song of every show is great. Even songs that aren't my cup of tea are great live.
They blend Jpop and Metal. They'll do songs in a bunch of different metal styles to see how it goes blended with Jpop. It's awesome. Sometimes it's a subgenre and sometimes a specific artist. They've done Dream Theater and Limp Bizkit. Broader styles like black metal and Ska. If there is a kind of metal you like they've probably done it. Not to mention non metal genres like Ska and rap and regae and Irish folk and Latin etc.

Welcome to the Babymetal "foxhole"! Excellent starting choice. Next I suggest you listen to "Road of Resistance live in Japan" and "Headbanger Legend 1997".
Sonisphere is a big touring metal festival and the 2014 show at Knebworth, UK had Iron Maiden, Prodigy, Dream Theater etc. as well as Babymetal so there was a big crowd of "metal heads".
In this classic IDZ performance you get a bit of everything: Kami Band shredding, Su power vocals, Su's hyper extended elbow, Moa and Yui backing vocal, dancing, and a Yui tutu malfunction. I also love the little touch of having the girls hold up Union Jack BM flags, that just shows an attention to detail that is fantastic. The title of the song takes an iconic Japanese anti-drugs slogan "Mayaku, Dame, Zettai" (Absolutely no drugs) and uses it against bullying substituting Ijime (bullying or abuse) for Mayaku (drugs).
In the two years before this concert BM had worked hard to transform themselves from an idol group, just singing and dancing to backing tracks, into a metal band capable of performing live in concert. The Kami Band had been formed and integrated into the performances and they had played several Japanese festivals and done the Legend concerts in preparation for touring. Their "Gimme Chocolate" performance had gone viral on CZcams and they were getting good buzz and were invited to perform at Sonisphere as part of their first European tour. They were nervous because the UK crowd was notoriously tough and they had been moved to the main stage because of the level of reaction (both good and bad) to the announcement of their appearance, but by the end of their 30 min set they had won the crowd over completely. IDZ was their finale. It's the moment that critics and the international audience realized that BM were a legitimate headlining band and not just a gimmick. It was also a complete vindication of Koba's vision and everyone's hard work and I think you can see that in Su's smile at the end.

SuMetal, aka Suzuka Nakamoto has been on stage since she was a toodler and having massive crowd in front of her even before BabyMetal was created, she was chosen by KobaMetal, the mastermind behind for leading this project when saw her singing on a stage and captivated by her powerful voice, the rest is history.
There's a lot more insights and details over this live performance and global social song message about anti bullying, so I'll come back later or hopefully someone will tell you more about it.

Great first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. As has been confirmed, this was indeed their very first time in the UK and their first major event outside of Asia - they did two small shows in Paris and Cologne a few days before this where Yui and Moa, the two younger girls, celebrated their 15th birthdays. Su-metal, the lead singer, was 16.
They were originally booked to play a small side stage or tent in front of maybe a couple of thousand people, but their video for their song 'Gimme Chocolate' had gone viral and they were attracting attention so the organisers moved them to the main stage with just a couple of months notice.
Some metal elitists who had seen 30 seconds of the 'Gimme Chocolate' video and made up their minds BABYMETAL must be some sort of money making gimmick band weren't happy and posted threats on social media of bottles being thrown and booing them off stage, but the vast majority of the people there (50-60,000 UK metalheads) didn't have a clue who they were.
From back stage the girls couldn't see the crowd and were worried nobody had come to see them and what they should do if there was nobody there - they walked on stage to see a sea of puzzled faces - hairy, tattooed metalheads wondering why three little Japanese girls in red tutus were on stage at one of the biggest metal festivals.
IDZ was the last song of their 25-30 minute set. They played just 5 songs and, as you heard, the crowd were wanting more and calling for "one more song" at the end. They gained a whole lot of new fans that day and their merch outsold all the other bands playing that weekend (that included some of the biggest names in metal).
They have spoken in interviews about how important this performance was as they realised their music could break boundaries, not least the language barrier - they sing in Japanese. Also they felt accepted by the metal community and it gave them the confidence to continue and to tour the world, which they did every year until the pandemic stopped that happening.
I'm glad you picked up on just how good Su-metal's vocals are (and you haven't heard anything yet). The whole concept for BABYMETAL was formed around her extraordinary vocal talents and stage presence ... even though she was still only 12 years old when they formed in 2010.
That does not mean Yuimetal and Moametal (the two younger girls) are less important - what they do is essential in making BABYMETAL what they are as they are the link to the crowd with the band. Their choreo helps interpret the songs, but it is also designed to lead the audience so when they jump, pump a fist, make a certain move etc so does the crowd and it is their lines in songs that the crowd sing along with.
Supporting them in all live shows since march 2014 and in the encores in some shows before then are the Kami Band, some of Japan'r very best session musicians. Kami means god or spirit, so they are the gods of guitar, bass and drums summoned from the dead to support BABYMETAL - that is why they had the traditional white burial robes and corpse face paint.
I think 'Karate' live at Download (also in the UK) 2016 would be a good song for your next reaction.

Yes it was their first ever UK festival. 95% of the crowd didn't know who they are, but in the end everybody talk about Babymetal. Their concept is different with traditional band as they have choreographed dance and theatrics.
How she has great live vocal : it's a result of hard work, She has been singing from stage to stage since 8 year old, her voice is unusually too loud for pop music, hence they tried to combine something unique with heavy metal, surprisingly it works really well.

I cannot blame you, I'm addicted to her singing voice and I don't even know why. Well, actually, her powerful vocals and performing skills were the main reason why BABYMETAL was formed back in 2010.
This song is their earliest power metal song, with no concessions to any other music genre (unlike many of their other songs). And that crowd really loved it (as you have seen). Walking out the stage and leaving that particular crowd asking for more is a huge win for a metal band. This makes the whole performance at the Sonisphere 2014 one of their most important milestones as it's generally considered the moment they were legitimate as a metal band worldwide.

you have picked up on a lot of the good points. Su, the lead singer is the reason that Babymetal was formed around her. she is like no other front person out there. you are right. her vocals are so good. and she is known for her death glares and stage presence. standing only 5' 1" she is 10ft tall on stage. she does so many different styles of music and is good at all of them. some bands only have a few songs that everybody loves and then dont care about the rest but not Babymetal. to me, there some songs i might not like as much as others but there is no bad song from them. a couple songs i am thinking about i might not like but the story about the song makes me like it anyway. Babymetal is a performance band that has to be seen live to understand them. the concerts they do are experiences not really concerts. the production that goes into one of their big shows is amazing. the more you react to them the more you will understand this band is one of the best period. my biased opinion anyway. lol. enjoy your journey to see for yourself what we all know about Babymetal. nothing else comes close.

good afternoon. Welcome to the Babymetal universe. This concert you have chosen is very special for western fans. Babymetal were well known in Asia, but practically unknown in the West (he had just hit youtube with his "chocolate gimme", but honestly it's a song that misleads a lot about this group... or maybe not, years later I haven't decided yet hahahahahahaha).
Well, I continue with what was going... when they were hired for the Sonisphere they were going to play on one of the small stages
(approximately for about 5,000 spectators dedicated to unknown or lesser known groups). However, the success of youtube and the fact that they were filling all the venues in Germany and France where they had their first concerts in the West, led the promoters to put them on the main stage with approximately 60,000 metalheads. But you have to talk, to understand what this means, about what the viewers of the Sonisphere are like. They are some of the hardest metalheads out there, famous for dispatching groups they don't like in a very bad way, even throwing bottles of urine at them on stage. The girls presented themselves with this panorama, before an audience where it could be calculated that 95% had never heard of them and, of course, neither of the genre they had created (Kawaii-Metal) and there was a well-founded fear that they might consider it offensive to the most orthodox view of metal in the West. They commented in an interview that they were scared when they went on stage, for two main reasons: the first one that we have mentioned, but the other is that it was practically deserted. Well, the success was resounding: the approval of the majority of the groups that attended, it was the group that sold the most merchandising and you have been able to see the reaction. That day they conquered the metal world. Today I am the most influential Japanese heavy metal group in the land of the rising sun and the Japanese group that has gone the furthest in recent history (the fans, who are very "intense", put them among the 10 most influential metal bands in the history). I hope you walk the fox hole and join The One (as we fans call ourselves)

She said in a NHK Tokyo TV interview in 2020 that this was her favourite performance of her career as, when they walked off stage, she knew that Babymetal had been accepted by Metal fans. They sold more merch that weekend at Sonisphere than any other band and have returned to the UK over and over since then. •Composer: Kxbxmetal, Tsubometal, Takemetal.

    •"Ijime, Dame, Zettai" (2013).
    •"Megitsune" (2013).
    "Ijime, Dame, Zettai"
    Background and release:-
The single was first announced after the concert Legend "I" at Shibuya O-East on October 6, 2012. An early version of the song can be heard in a video uploaded to the band's official CZcams channel entitled "Babymetal - My First Heavy Metal in Tokyo 2012", which also features part of a live performance of "Iine!". On November 8, 2012, an official trailer for the single and accompanying music was uploaded to the band's official CZcams channel. The trailers, along with a live performance at Sonisphere Festival, subtitled the song as "No More Bullying" and "No More, Bullying, Forever", respectively. An interview with the producers of the band was published in the December issue of Marquee to promote the single's release in January.
The single was released in four versions: a standard edition and three physical limited editions, "I", "D", and "Z". The DVDs included in the limited editions contain either footage of the music video for "Ijime, Dame, Zettai", or of a live performance by Babymetal. The single also had a promotional release to customers who purchased tickets to live performances of Legend "I", "D", or "Z".
Unlike previous singles released under Juonbu Records, no songs from the single appeared on a Sakura Gakuin album, due to "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!" having been already released the same school year.

About your question, if they are known.
If we're going to categorize genres of music, Kpop has a lot of known groups indeed and I think currently the dominant genre coz it's lighter music to listen to. But if we'll go to the rock and metal genre, Babymetal is undoubtedly known by most in the community of the genre. One of the things that made them known is that they are an unconventional band. We can safely say that they (and I'm talking about the whole BM team) are among the 5%-10% out of 100% of the rock and metal bands in the world in the past decades who are courageous enough to break boundaries in many ways and bring something new to the table hence founding their own metal sub-genre "kawaii-metal" which is now recognized by most and is followed by newer bands especially those from Japan. That's also a reason why they gained a fair amount of hate from metalheads who are used to the typical type of metal and its sub-genres. Well, they conquered and continue to conquer those hate.
A band that was initially tagged as a "gimmick" and won't last long (well most bands have gimmicks tho in different ways, big or small, BM just has a vary bold approach) is still going strong for the past 11 years now.
I remember a metalhead who's working for a metal media company said his reaction to Kingslayer by Bring Me the Horizon ft. Babymetal lyric video "Those who are not afraid to take a different path and embrace innovation are those who will survive and succeed in this industry"

The legendary day when Babymetal conquered the UK b4 going on to conquer the world.
The vast majority of the crowd didn't know who they were. They were bumped on to the main stage quite last minute. Some metal heads were openly hostile to the idea of having them open the main stage on the Saturday. Backstage, the girls were terrified of how the crowd would behave towards them.
29 minutes later, they were superstars. :")

it was short concert (30min) and only 5 songs (this song was last one).
Usually their performance 60-80min long and 10-15 songs.
The girls were very worried, and did not know how they would be received by Western metalheads. They performed for the first time at a Western heavy music festival. Initially, they were planned to be released on a small stage, but due to strong interest in the band, it was decided to move to the main stage. This was all shortly before the start of the show, so everything was done in a hurry. On one of the fancams, it was clear that at the beginning of the show one of the guitarists had problems with sound, and right during the song they helped him set everything up. But in the end everything went great. And already 2 years after this show, they performed at one of the main venues in the UK - Wembley Arena. Won a lot of awards, including Best Live Band 2016/2017
Wembley Arena (UK 2016) was one of the best Babymetal concert.
They call UK their second home, because of all Western countries, they are the most accepted here.

I suggest that you go look at the lyrics to this song, which has a great message about anti-bullying. Suzuka Nakamoto, the lead singer, has been performing on stage since an incredibly early age. She is widely respected for her powerful voice. The band, as a whole, have earned the respect of other metal bands, who have been very vocal defending them from people who call them a gimmick. BABYMETAL formed in 2010, and they’ve continued to grow in popularity.
Unfortunately, Yui Mizuno had to leave the band in 2018 due to health reasons. Sadly, the guitarist you pointed out, Mikio Fujioka, tragically died in 2018 five days after falling from an observation deck while stargazing on December 30, 2017.
The band has been on hiatus since October 2021, but today announced they will soon be returning.

Nice reaction. Babymetals stage presence is amazing. Su-metal is 10' tall on stage. Yui and Moa are right there with her. together they can be seen from space. Off stage that's something altogether different. Su is 5'2" tall and Yui and Moa were smol then. lol Under 5'. But they were young. Su-metal has been singing since she was knee high. This song is about bullying. A big problem in Japan at the time the song was written. Babymetal is everything you wanted in music and somethings you didn't know you needed.

This was their international breakout. They are High School students their middle teens. Created in 2010 by Key Kobayashi. This performance turned the English music world atilt. 3 tiny Japanese girls blowing away an audience of 60,000 in 30 minutes! The music press didn't know deal with them, they are cute and scary. They are the first Japanese group/band to perform at Wembley Arena, breaking the record for band merchandise sold. This was 2014 and they regularly toured the UK and Europe ever since, plus the US. In 2019 they sold-out the LA Forum.
"Karate" at Download; Headbanger, Legend of 1997; Pa Pa Ya; BxMxC; Road of Resistance, live in Japan. Should keep you busy.

Great first reaction mate! Babymetal is addictive. I really don't like Ytube video/channel recommendations BUT when Babymetal was recommended to me (Gimme Chocolate - their 157 million views viral video) back in April 2020. I was hooked. They are totally unique. Next, please react to Karate Live at UK Download 2016 (my favorite). Thanks.

If you're up for some more Japanese Bands I have a couple of suggestions.
All Female Pop-Rock/Pop-Punk band SCANDAL ( here is their song SCANDAL BABY - czcams.com/video/5D7v5iAnMlUh/video.htmlttps://czcams.com/video/5D7v5iAnMlU/video.html)
All Female Hard Rock Band Band-Maid ( Here is their song Freedom - czcams.com/video/FHpuEqMAcDg/video.html)
and as for Babymetal to help you experience the power of SU's vocals I'd suggest trying Akatsuki next ( czcams.com/video/g2372C5PJLM/video.html )

A warning. It is superdupermega easy to be obsessed by Babymetal and that is a good thing! Just pick a song. Every song is different and will challenge your mind one way or another. A band that are somewhere between Babymetal and Kpop is the japanese group Passcode. Check them out as well when You have time.

Hello and thank you for reacting to Babymetal! I can't wait to see you discover more of them. I will be here for all the future reactions. If I may, I'd like to request that you react to the Babymetal guide after you have reacted to a few more of their songs. It is a long video, but It would be very interesting to see a K-pop fan react to where the girls started off and where they ended up. The guide is by CrypticMisery, and it's about 40 minutes long, but worth it.

You say this is a K-Pop channel but I did not see any Dreamcatcher on your videos... Do you know them? THere is a video on YT where they jam to "Gimme Chocolate" while in the car, and they say they love that song :D
Since it's their most famous song and they went viral with that MV in 2014, I would suggest you to react to "GImme Chocolate"! But not the official MV, since lately it gets blocked quite often. Instead look for the live version at Legend 1997 (that's the name of the show for the singer's 16th birthday in 2013).
I would say BabyMetal is also quite big in the West, expecially in the UK, since they have been to Download in 2016 and 2018, they filled the Wembley arena in 2016 and the L.A. Forum in 2019. They are the most successfull metal/rock Asian group ever outside of Asia!

@@rob21jj In 2019 Babymetal became the first Asian act to top the Billboard Rock Albums chart with the release of their third studio album Metal Galaxy. Also, Metal Galaxy won Best Album of the year 2020 MTV Video Music Awards Japan.
Dreamcatcher while great has won 2 awards; Promising Idol in 2018 and Best Global Artist (Taiwan) they have been nominated for several though.
Babymetal has won 25 awards and nominated for several others since 2014. They had a 4 year head start though.
Just keeping it real with the comparison. Not trying to Shade Dreamcatcher at all. Just giving context to John's comment.
