Legendary Locations - The Discover channel visit Spike Island and find more than just empty cells!

The exceptional Discovery channel programme 'Legendary Locations' paid a visit to Spike Island Cork and found much more than a old prison block. Our island location was the largest prison in the world during the 1850's and also held prisoners in an 1921, rebels who were fighting for Irish freedom. One such man was Patrick White who was shot by a British soldier while retreiving a sliotar during games. While the soldier was disciplined noting more came of it and the murder went unpunished.
While in the 1860s notrorious murder Seamus Walsh was held in our now 'abandoned jail', and his dark presense has been reported by many visitors.

I did my recruit training for the Irish naval service on spike in 1984, one summers evening I went for a shower in the shower block , which was located in the ground floor of an old prison block, so I'm in the shower and I know I'm the only one in the building, when I hear a cell door on the floor above me slam shut, followed by foot steps, I fucking pelt out of there across the huge parade square covered only in suds, yeah spike a truly creepy place, spent 6 months there, ghosts , an abandoned graveyard and feral cats, that was spike

I did the tour of Spike in 2017, historic and interesting but a very grim place. Wondering what it would be like to be alone there at night.

Just on a point of information - the 'colourful streets' shown at the beginning of the video are not in fact those of Cork City, but of the town of Cóbh, (pronounced 'Cove'), pop. c. 5,000. The much larger city of Cork, pop. c. 200,000 lies approximately 15 miles upriver.
