I started watching hermitcraft in 2019 and when the Dream SMP started in 2020 I wanted to check it out. The culture shock was immense. Both are great but the playstyles are definitely different.
I enjoy a lot of streamed SMPs -- Hermitcraft, X-Life, Legacy, Empires, Life, Witchcraft and many more -- but when I tried to get into Dream SMP content... they just seemed to run around and scream REALLY loudly a lot. It definitely didn't hook me, so I never really paid it much attention after those first few negative experiences :(
@@olencone4005 Dream SMP takes awhile to get going, and with Tommy (as was literally his intro at one point), most people find him annoying at first, but as you watch him more and more you start to warm to him. Also because the story and lore happened completely by accident that only really starts to get going with the L’mansburg war (though the disk saga between Tommy and Dream is also very important to understanding later lore).
Also with Dream SMP it’s one of those cases where the fandom can be better than the original series. It gets a ton of hate for its younger members, but it is also by far the fandom with the largest concentration of good artists and animators I have ever seen. The animatics are half the enjoyment (heck I don’t think the series itself would exist without the creators seeing SADist’s L’mansburg animatic), and the weird game of artistic ping pong between the creators and the community. At its height it was what made the series so cool…. and then it spiraled into a dumpster fire, but I blame Twitter for that one-
I will warn it’s a ton of content though, and if you’re watching for builds, or redstone, or creating anything at all actually- Dream SMP is probably not for you. Automation and killing the ender dragon are banned, and originally netherite was as well. Also yeah- there will be a lot of um, structures resembling male genitalia on the server. And involved in the plot. The server is very chaotic and not in the way Hermitcraft is. Hermitcraft is controlled chaos like that weird quiet kid in your middle school that does some really cool art.
The Dream SMP is more like a bunch of 10th grade theater kids screwing around, burning down each other’s buildings, and somehow accidentally creating a complex and extremely interesting plot about morally grey characters and how things can be viewed differently across different perspectives. It’s a very different vibe, and really can’t easily be compared to Hermitcraft or really any other SMP I’ve seen.
But yeah I can’t say there isn’t a lot of screaming, and blowing up stuff, and stealing, and setting things on fire. Also get used to tonal whiplash, and especially in the beginning the creators not taking things too seriously (tbh the series kinda went downhill when they started taking it too seriously imo). The most important location is called L’mansburg, and yes, all of the names are that stupid. The lore is stupid, and silly, but that’s part of what makes it fun. It’s clear it’s just a bunch of friends messing around and having fun together. At least in the early days-
But yeah! If you want someone who was in the fanbase’s opinion on what makes it so good, that’s my thoughts! To be honest, I recommend Sadist’s animatics as a gauge of wether you’d like it more than the actual series, it’s where the majority of the fans came from, and at one point one of the animatics actually had more views than any of the livestream VODs. I also get it’s not as good watching it on CZcams as it is watching it live. Exile especially, the whole thing of “you have no idea of what could happen next” and the tension is lost when you can just skip ahead and read the comments. But yeah, the series is great, and don’t let the younger fans scare you off, there’s also tons of fans in their late teens or college age (in the early days they used to be the majority of the community actually). But yeah!

@@amberspark9434 It's cool, it's all about entertainment -- and everyone has something different that they prefer :) It wouldn't be nearly as much fun if there was just one Minecraft streamer or only one type of playstyle!
Personally, I'm more of a casual, sedate kinda gamer nowadays -- I'll take casually bouncing around to catalog rocks on some random little world in No Man's Sky over a chaotic hours-long Crucible raid in WoW any day... tho the opposite would have been true just a couple of decades ago haha! ^_^
I'm sure there's more to DSMP than what I saw (and from what you wrote it sounds like they do have some good storytelling), but ... well, first impressions are everything.
And my first impression was several minutes of straight up screaming while the camera jiggled around at random. As I recall, my second video started out interesting (I think it was someone doing a world tour? or at least talking about some builds others had done), but then it just randomly became a scream-battle between two or three players. And my third video started with screaming and random explosions with chaotic camera movements... after a couple of minutes of this, I just closed the tab and didn't try any more. :(
I'll stick to things like HC and Empires -- they may get noisy for a moment sometimes, but it's never over the top and they have a good feel for when a skit has been done to death. Heck, I usually get some of my best builds done while I listen to a fWhip stream or a Hermit Stream Weekend in the background ^_^

I can’t imagine going from watching Etho at 14 to playing and joking around with him on Hermitcraft. Gem is living all our Ethogirl and fanboy dreams. And she’s not even the least bit awkward about it. A genuine superpower, she has. Meanwhile you have Doc, Impulse, Tango, Joe, Jevin, Bdubs, Ren, being all super stans especially during season 7 when he came back xD

To be fair, Doc and Bdubs played minecraft with Etho on the Mindcrack server for years after Etho joined Mindcrack in 2011. So while Doc and Bdubs have both stated they started watching Etho before joining the Mindcrack server just as many of the Hermits stated they watched him before playing on an SMP as well, those 2 in particular were actually his friends many years before he joined Hermitcraft. Same with Beef of course.
I absolutely adore how much impact Etho has made on the minecraft community and seeing content creators acknowledge that is so awesome to me.
A friend showed me the video "Bite-Sized Minecraft" from Sethbling, which started my mcyt journey. From Sethbling playing on Mindcrack I learned about Etho and since then I'm a total fanboy of everything he does. I believe since I've been subscribed to him (which is like 6 years or so at least), I have never missed a single video he uploads.

A while ago I watched an old Gem Q&A, and she was asked if she'd ever want to join Hermitcraft. She said yeah, she'd love to, it's her dream, but she's still a very small creator. Maybe someday if she grew and got the opportunity.

It may be surprising, but a significant portion of Dream SMP fans became fans of Hermitcraft, either because they were looking for another SMP to watch or they were enticed by clips of the turf war in season 7, big moon in season 8, or the start of season 9. A lot of those creators are in fact fans of Hermitcraft, and some storylines like the Season 7 election, were replicated for the lore of Dream SMP.
Yes, the audience is a bit young and may just be attracted to the celebrity aspect of the creators, but the older fans such as myself not only liked the deep lore, but also the shenanigans that would occur, for which Hermitcraft is full of those.
The creators on that Dream SMP eventually became so burnt out, and their schedules became so busy, they couldn’t put time into the server anymore either through building or storytelling (and of course the anarchy tendencies). Hermitcraft doesn’t need complicated storylines to keep us interested, so keep being your derpy selves.
I was a Dream SMP fan and started watching Hermitcraft, in season 8 in 2021. Nowadays I don't really watch either.
Also, I'd totally agree about the last part.
For Hermitcraft, everyone has BIG plans. Even if you memed out Mumbo's popularized Mega concept, it's not that far off from the actual truth. Etho's insane storage system, Tango's even bigger Decked Out game, Beef's TCG, Docm's world eater, Keralis' city, and BdoubleO building an artificial mountain (before the cave and cliffs update) because he wants a better view of his castle.

@@poggersbro There doesn't need to be official citations, people have noticed byu talking to people and watching CZcams videos. There are so many animatics CZcamsrs who started with DSMP and then moved to Hermitcraft animatics. I also know a few people beyond CZcamsrs who migrated to the Hermitcraft CZcams space so it isn't very unheard of.
I swear as soon as he said Christopher Paolini I was hit with such a huge wave of shock and nostalgia. I remember reading the books Eragon and Eldest in middle school. Had no idea that guy was a Minecraft fan but honestly it kinda makes sense lol.

@@Jackred94 unfortunately I never had the chance to but I have plans to. Checked them out at my school library or whatever. Had this stupid shit called “accelerated reader” AKA AR reading where they basically forced us to shove a certain amount of books down our throats each school year rather than actually savoring them, and we were graded through quizzes we would take about plot points and details and stuff. Was gonna fail English one year if I didn’t complete everything in time so I was essentially forced to spoil the latter half of Eldest for myself in order to pass the quiz. That was many years ago now tho, forgotten most of Eldest but not all of it. Eragon will always stick with me tho for the most part. First book I ever read through and enjoyed entirely on my own, and actually finished lol. I’m outta school now and once life stops being so damn crazy I hope to be able to find the time to start from scratch and finally read through all 4.

It's also interesting to bring up the recent "DreamSMP to Hermitcraft Pipeline" that's happened too, a lot of DSMP fans (me included) moved on from the DreamSMP and began watching Hermitcraft! I liked Dsmp for the story, but I think what makes me REALLY watch Hermitcraft and Minecraft videos in general is just having fun with your friends. I absolutly love the hermit's interactions and it's what makes me keep coming back, I think
that's what they did in the early days of dsmp anyways.

Funny enough, I started off watching Technoblade along with DanTDM, PopularMMOS, etc. Then I lost interest for a while but came back and became a big fan of hermitcraft season 6, watching Grian. THEN just as my interest started to wane I got into DSMP and rediscovered Technoblade. And now, finally, I've come back to hermitcraft. I've probably been playing minecraft for etiher 10 years or very nearly ten years... I think I started playing when I was 8?
It's funny, my favorite dsmp arcs came from a brief period of time where the lore was on hold and Tommy was building a hotel and Ranboo and Tubbo were building their mansion. When lore started up again, I moved on to their non dsmp content and finally started watching hermitcraft from my brother.
Now I like hermitcraft way more than I ever did dsmp
I feel like a lot of us older zoomers (2000-2006) probably resonate more with the 'older' minecrafters due to it being very nostalgic. Most of us were introduced to it at a very young age as 8-11 year olds, so we heavily associate the game and the youtube culture surrounding the game with our early childhoods. I am 18 and remember watching SkyDoesMinecraft, Yogscast, Stampy, CaptainSparklz, and DanTDM. Being especially interested in modded minecraft due to only having a console at the time because my family couldn't really afford to get a PC.
If you talk to anyone my age in the community, they will probably tell you that the 'unedited (modded) letsplay' format is very poignantly nostalgic - it is 'comfy'. Though I probably could never go back and watch such a format now. I feel like contrary to popular belief, kids sometimes have incredibly better attention spans than us adults due to having less expectations from the stuff they watch.
It was strange seeing some people who was not too familiar with minecraft become very invested in it due to the DSMP/Pewdiepie wave. I think roughly a third of older zoomers are part of such wave, and a much larger majority of younger zoomers are. I think it also depends on your placement in terms of siblings when it comes to these generational things. If you have many older siblings, you tend to adopt cultural stuff from the older end of your generation, whilst if you are older you may be at the forfront of what defines your generation. It also depends on class, I was born in 2005 but still remember playing a PS2 and having a square TV. I remember watching films stored on VHS's.
THIS. My 2002 self who grew up with older brothers understands this perfectly. The nostalgia from this game (modded and not) is crazy. I remember thinking it was so cool playing mc with the race to the moon modpack
I'm 2002, and yeah I grew up watching a lot of DanTDM modded videos, and SkyDoesMinecraft Prison escape videos. I know a few zoomers just 3 years younger than me, and while they were into Minecraft before, they got heavily into DreamSMP stuff. I was really into Dream's older stuff, and I enjoy the manhunts, but I never got into DSMP. But she loves it and introduced some of her other family members to it.
It's really interesting how just a few years can really change the type of communities they end up getting introduced to.
I had a few friends in High School who didn't really get too into Minecraft until Pewdiepie started playing it, and I remember them asking if I had been watching his Minecraft series.
You ever watch the Jujubee Islands from YouAlwaysWin? Dumb and Dumber were some of my favorite Minecraft CZcamsrs, their videos actually still stand up pretty well today

Never thought I'd be classified as an 'older' zoomer minecrafter LOL, but I just looked at when 1.8 came out since I started playing MC then and realized it was all the way back in 2014! Used to watch a lot of DanTDM and PopularMMOs back then, insane how fast the years go.
Honestly, I think X underrates how large the overlap is between HC and DSMP. It's not large, and not as much as something like the DSMP and PVP community, but like.. 1/20 DSMP fans will probably also be an HC fan.
I get the feeling that Grian kinda acts as a bridge; he's like the most DSMP-like member on Hermitcraft

@@KevSB07 Hmm 'most popular' sounds a bit demeaning. Maybe "with the largest audience". (Which also isn't entirely true, since Mumbo has more subscribers). The other Hermitcraft members are popular in their own right, they just deliver to a different niche of the Hermitcraft audience, which might be a smaller audience or not. If you want to watch someone who is trying to break MC you go to Doc, if you want to watch someone be derpy, but also thoughtful and creative, you go and watch Xisuma and so on.

It’s not demeaning to be aware. Grian and Mumbo have the largest audiences, which makes sense considering they share certain attributes with other creators on the other side of the overall Minecraft community
(This isn’t even related to your comment but now I’m thinking again) I would bet that most DSMP fans that watch HC watch Grian either as their main hermit or their first hermit, and got eased into the others from him, as well as the pseudo-relationships he has or had with creators like Wilbur Soot, Technoblade (Rest in peace), etc. MCC is probably also a big contributor to mixing the two groups, and introducing the larger Minecraft community to Grian.
@@KevSB07You’re probably right about Grian’s popularity, although if we’re going by intensity of roleplay, I’d group Rendog, Scar and DocM with the storytellers of DSMP.

I just related that Grian is generally the “loudest” hermit if that makes sense and likely the best at attracting a younger audience’s attention

Gem's young but started from a early age. Since she started watching minecraft at 14 and making videos at 15 she's been around in the community for 10-11 years, about as long as most other hermits. Gem was also one of the the first minecrafters I watched and the first I became obsessed with immediately lol. I binged most of her series with in the first couple months of watching.
i played with Cpt Puffy on a server for a while nearly a decade ago. We both made content, and while I quit, she stuck it out and eventually got discovered and became successful. So I really like your point with how a lot of these current Minecraft content creators have been invested in this community for a very long time!

Yeah, a while ago Scar commented on one of his tweets abt something book related and then Paolini did a surprise uno reverse and started fanboying all over Scar lol . Then Doc got involved (Apparently they kinda knew eachother from a scicraft visit ) and extended an invitation and somehow instead of the usual hermitcraft meeting that week they all hung out with Paolini instead

I work at a bookstore, this is so cute that I can just drop the fact Christopher paolini not only plays Minecraft, but also is a fan of hermitcraft and watches it and literally chilled with you is just such nice author lore, omg.
I've watched Hermitcraft pretty consistently since Season 5, but over lockdown I also hyper-focused on the Dream SMP and I'm now super deep into both communities! They both have quite different vibes which, probably coincidentally, play into the different areas of entertainment I enjoy. It's strangely bizarre to see Xisuma talking about the Dream SMP, it's like two opposite ends of the spectrum in my mind coming together and I my brain cannot fully comprehend it. hahaha

Nice to hear you talk about this a bit! I haven't watched any of the DSMP stuff but it's cool to see moments like this where the communities briefly collide, and I'm glad you shared your thoughts on it! There's definitely a lot of players who seem to have always been there, I only really got into the game during the last few years or so, so I often feel like I've missed out on that early nostalgia, but I've already made some nice memories from both playing and watching, and I'm looking forward to seeing what we all do in Minecraft in the years to come!
1:00 I already see a lot of love for the comments in the chat, but I want to state I love you too. I really liked reading his novel was young. Then I when I wanted to write my own novel when I was 14, he was on my list of authors to contact to learn from before writing. He was the only author to respond and he is very inspiring when you realise he wrote Eragon at 18, see his wikipedia. I am so thankful he reached out and inspired me. I espected no author to message back as they are all busy and I as a random 14 year old felt intrusive. So grateful for him reaching back and making me happy. He is just a great writer.
Not from the "primordial" minecraft days but since 1.5 was when i got my hands on the game and never played a lot of it, mostly recently i got to play a lot and did jump from a lot of communities to find what i liked, and ended up watching HC, first creator i watched was Doni Bobes with the prank videos on tge server and then Mumbo's redstone videos which eventually made hermitcraft pop on my feed with grian's "Sahara Needs Leather" on season 6 and still here xD but i can see a lot of people having some affinity with more than one community like HC and DSMP
1.5 it's still very early on not just bc you didn't start from the alpha doesn't mean you're not "primordial"
There's a big difference between the Minecraft community but only from the people who play before and after 1.14
@Giulia Gabriela Thanks, i guess you are right! And i do agree the 1.14 update does more or less mark a big change in the community since was minecraft's rebirth in popularity and atracted many first timers to the game and created very destinct communities
Love catching little stories / interactions like this that I would have otherwise missed over the course of a multi-hour stream.
It's definitely interesting to see where some areas of MC overlap and how slight variations early on lead to widely varied content years (or even decades) later.

Just putting this out there i would consider Etho as one of the "Founding Fathers" of MC survival content creation. So many people started their journeys because of ETHO
Started with grian in hermitcraft, then heard about the dream smp and was impressed by dream in the first place, but idk I feel like there’s a lot more screaming in the dream smp lol so Ive always preferred hermit craft. It just feels more creative and wholesome and also family friendly and I like that. I’ve then switched to watching other hermits, specifically etho. And I think I’ll stick with the hermits because I’ve known them longer and have got to know each of them and I like the community
I wouldn't say the dsmpers are _less_ creative, just that they're expending their creative energies a bit differently. It's much more role-play focused than build focused. (Though with any server there are some stand out builds.) Pretty fair assessment to go with hermitcraft on the basis of preferring chill vibes over chaos though.
I started with dsmp liked puffy, phil, techno, ranboo, wilbur, and the occasional tommy. Found grian through mccs especially with techno and wilbur, watch grian throw himself at mumbo's vault door, then i watched mumbo build the vault (he had like 5 s9 episodes seemed like a good place to start as a brand new watcher), mumbo interactived with scar and he looked cool and then from scar i found bdubs and others. now here i am watching every hermit lol
If you haven't already. I highly recommend watching older Hermitcraft seasons as well. For me, season 6 is the best Hermicraft season. I'm currently re-watching season 6 through Grian's perspective.
@@maxoduke I've tried and I've loved seeing clips but older textures and animations are really hard for me to watch most unfortunately. Only full old seasons I could through was Etho's s7 and various s8 povs

I've been contemplating the fact that all my favorite MC creators are fairly older than your typical gamers. Like in their 30's or older. They are my favorite because they are really really good as something like building or Redstone or whatever. I've been wondering why they are older. I think it's because MC is so nuanced and involved, it's takes the 10+ years to figure it out, learn and practice. Which gives me hope that I can one day achieve that level of skill with building. I've been practicing for about 3 years now (been playing MC since bedrock was released) and I know it's going to take lots more time to master it. If not years.

I still remember playing Minecraft when it was in a browser as well, I think that’s when a lot of my core memories where made for Minecraft
Paolini is one of my favorite authors -- he's a very talented writer! For me, I got started on Minecraft around 1.4 or 1.5... I'd only been playing a few months when the update that added horses (1.6) came out -- and I gotta admit, horses are really what got me hooked. I started building racetracks and redstone speed trials to see which horses were faster, then making nice stables for the horses, which led to nice houses for me -- and by that point I was 100% hooked haha! ^_^
I switched from DSMP to HermitCraft somewhere in the beginning of season 8 and was so shocked. It was a world apart from the playstyle of DSMP, so peaceful. I got hooked, and never looked back.
Man, i started with watching grian building, bought a new laptop just to play minecraft java ( been playing bedrock since can't remember when ), then during the pandemic i discovered dream's chaos. Have to say i equally enjoy both sides and i love how the community can be so diversed in its content.

This makes me wonder with whom many players started watching/playing Minecraft outside of the English speaking world. I remember watching quite a lot of Dutch Minecraft CZcamsrs. One time, years layer, during high school a teacher referenced something that one of those CZcamsr used to do during his lesson. After which a whole bunch started talking about that CZcamsr, that we used to watch years before. That gave me a huge smile on my face.
I am from South India and 3 years back I accidentally screwed up my farm and was just searching for a pulse extender for my stupid farm (it worked though) I searched in CZcams mumbo jumbo came up and after watching that restone video I got recommendations of his hermitcraft episode then I started watching those. I couldn't understand what they are saying half the time . 3 years later theses guys never failed to entertain and besides my language improved considerably
I'm Polish and I remember that my first contact with Minecraft was through Polish Minecraft machinimas, with most of them, excluding the very well-known in the Polish internet and at least partly scripted series by Jjayjoker (dunno even if these videos are even available nowadays), being obscure and from smaller channels. Then I think I got hooked up on watching gameplays of survival games and some Minecraft maps, still solely in Polish. Then somewhere in middle school I almost completely stopped watching Mc, only keeping up with a Polish youtuber called Roxmb, and after some time leaving even his viewerbase. Then in high school I found Grian's build battles, and through that quickly found his Hc season 6 series. A few years later and now I'm an avid viewer of several hermits and a few other Mc ytbers, all of them recoding in English. But interestingly, like two years ago some OG Polish Mc youtubers made a "reboot" of sorts of an old SMP called Kwadratowa Masakra (which I haven't seen at all despite it existing during my younger days in Mc community) and for the time it lasted I kept up with it, but only from one person's perspective, and when it ended due to some dramas I quickly got back to the English-speaking parts of Mc Yt, never to come back. And I don't regret that.
Stampy, Dan, Stacey, Captain, LDShadowlady, Cupquake….they all take me back to when my kid was little. They drove me BONKERS, but their content wasn’t for me obvs. I will say they were a pretty wholesome lot and they were nice breaks between YoGabbaGabba and such.
I didn’t get interested in actually, really playing, despite being a gamer since the 80s when I was a kid, until I found hermitcraft and Scicraft. I played with my kid, but they were still a kid kid and didn’t really want to play the game per se. But playing on my own? I was scared of everything that bumped in the night. The older group really got me into it. (Thanks Pix! It was bumping into Pix’s tutorials and then hermitcraft recap that got me into them)
Now I’ve admined servers and streamed and put many many hours into the game.
I can say without a doubt that the crew my kid watched have grown into truly lovely adults with their own beautiful families in whatever shape that may take. And seeing some of the smaller creators like Cleo going full time has been amazing. Seeing someone I both admire and relate to become a success is inspiring.
I grew up on DanTDM, Thinknoodles, and Mianite, and then had a clean split from the Minecraft world until COVID. I came back to find a very different fandom, but my favorite thing about it is how talented everyone is in it.
Man... It's crazy how up and coming channels all have this incredibly swift and intense style if editing. Sort of like every clip of theirs could be cut thrown on tiktok or like they're so afraid of losing people's attention that something is happening on the screen every second sometimes multiple times a second and to my zennial brain it's just a shocking ammount of information all being flung at me all at once
they don't ever really explain what they're doing or delve into the creative process of Minecraft from their perspective whereas people like the hermits or sci-craft members typically always take their time explaining things and show much more of the planning phase and creative vision before jumping in. It's a much more relaxed style of videomaking that doesn't seem to be paying off anymore unless you already have an audience as it's incredibly hard to gain traction on CZcams as a platform now.

cackling over this because i’m a teenager, started playing minecraft when i was literally 4-5 yrs old. started off watching etho, beef and bdubs with my parents (mindcrack smp my beloved), then mumbo with my parents too. then in 2020 got into dreams content and watched all his stuff w my mom then got into the dream smp/dream smp lore in late 2020 and my parents and i watched dsmp stuff together for awhile, and then last life came out so we watched that from ethos pov, then we started watching grians hermitcraft and grians third life… now we’re regular hermitcraft watchers and i’m over here watching videos like this and telling all my friends about how silly hermitcraft is at any chance i get lmao. there’s WAY more fan base overlap than you’d think especially with scar working w tubbo in recent months and other dsmp members too. plus w the dream smp dead, more fans are going to be looking for more minecraft content and end up on hermitcraft videos :D
Just checking out your side channels and loving Xisumasays. This video made me go back and find my receipt of purchase for Minecraft, which happens to be in Feb. of 2011. I never even got into MC content at all on CZcams 'til years after I started playing. It was just 2 friends of mine and myself on a server I ran on the same PC I played on.
I think that's why I've been drawn to Hermitcraft when I discovered it. Just reminds me of how I play the game. Friends and I just palling around and making things that are fun. It has a sense of nostalgia, even though that was only 12 years ago. Weird.
4:30 X, I think you’d be surprised how much it overlaps because of the amount of chaos you lot also get up to. My first favourite when I started watching Minecraft content again was also a british musician (Wilbur) then later on ended with Technoblade before I found myself with Grian, then Doc, then you.
I did start watching Grian bcuz I liked him when he teamed up with Techno so the connection here might just be MCC putting people together lol.
I started playing Minecraft after the beta 1.8 update was released, a friend showed me Minecraft one day after school I was 13, when I was at his house and I was honestly blown away being shown creative mode. After watching this video i realised I’ve been here since the very beginning I think what makes the Hermitcraft community so wonderful is a lot of us have grown up together and the creators have become people we look up to and they’ve kept the same passion and ethos, I think the video that sticks with me the most is your melon and pumpkin farm episode in season 1 I think that’s where I first discovered you. Some other creators I first watched was iJevin and chimneyswift. Also I remember watching the yogacast Jaffa factory series which started around season 1 of hermitcraft. I’m so glad I grew up in that era of the game. I’ve never watched dream smp I’m sure newer players enjoy that content but the chilled nature of the hermitcraft players and gameplay keep me hooked. I’m 23 now.

I started watching Minecraft stuff around 1.0 and i started playing Minecraft before a update where they added saddles, the only thing I remember from that time that creative mode menu was just one section and it had all items, oh and chainmail armor was craftable with fire block. But I bought premium around 2019 before 1.15 because I remember I had so much struggle with 1.14 optimization
Not a dot day but June '11 so .7 beta. Am older than TFC was, but too much of a true hermit that streaming scares me. Love watching you and the HC crew for the fun content. I do take every opportunity to introduce my grands to MC and The Hermits. Maybe soon, the great-grands as well. I currently play a lot of modded with the small community on our servers.

I’ve played MC for ~10 years, going through phases of it, but this one sticking around. I rejoined the online community in 2021 with DSMP story snagging my interest and favouring Techno and Phil (but not really watching the others). Then watched the Life series which introduced me to HC, which I now prefer and only watching a few creators from the DSMP.
I’m 16 years old trying to make my way through the chaos of CZcams and Minecraft itself, I’ve never been a big fan of the dream smp, it’s a lot easier to destroy and grief than it is to create and improve, that’s what I love about hermitcraft, it’s filled with dozens of creators pushing the limit of their abilities to create beautiful works of art. And it’s where I’d want to be if I ever succeed with my goals. Thanks for inspiring me to create hermitcraft!

I only started watching HC at the start of season 9 even though I've been playing minecraft for about 9 years; I'd heard of it a while before that, it just never clicked that this was a series I'd enjoy watching, and I wish I had started watching it sooner. Anyways, I was looking at some of the former members on the wiki and I found Static along with a few others whose content I also really liked, so it's cool to see you mention him. One thing I noticed about Static was that he posted on Facebook a link to an unlisted video that was supposed to go up the next day, but it has still never been posted and he has been silent from social media since. I totally understand why people would want to do other things than the internet, and that mindset can set in suddenly, but I'm wondering that since you're a friend of his can you confirm that he's alright?
I just recently turned 26 on January 29th I got into Minecraft from watching both Etho and The Yogscast. The Etho skin and Honeydew skin are very nostalgic to me also the deadmau5 skin was a big thing back in the beta days. I cant believe I still enjoy Minecraft event after 12 years now
I will say having dipped my head into dream SMP for a bit out of curiosity it’s such a different taste of Minecraft. I think this taste predates DSMP, and probably started with that SMP Live (the one where the the only rules were you had to be live while playing, and you couldn’t AFK) where randomness and more brutal pranking was the norm that people just worked around. This definitely bled into DSMP, and with it’s narrative aspect (which was probably adopted from SMP world) letting things play out without major oversight from the group it leads to a far more hostile existence that can turn to total anarchy. Now this can be fun and enjoyable, but it also doesn’t really form a community within the server. Sure you’ll get factions and alliances, but it never fully becomes one community (obviously there is one since it’s an SMP, but it doesn’t really play out that way).
Honestly HC is probably the poster child for having a community on its SMP. Everyone will chip in, and help out if needed, and though wars break out it’s never a thing that breaks that community (look at the mycelium resistance, and how well that was handled).
Man, I gotta reminisce here for a bit. It's been probably over 2 years since I last watched hermitcraft (or any minecraft for that matter), and watching this video just made me full of nostalgia. I'm afraid I'm kinda done with minecraft (for now?) Not necessarily something wrong with it, I just spent too much time with it. But for years, starting with season 2 of hermitcraft, I watched you and many other hermits. Now, I'm sad that that part of my life is over. Still, somehow, I don't really feel a huge draw to get back to it... ah well, who knows, maybe one day. I can come back and get all kinds of confused about all the new mechanics. I can go "back in my day" and feel like a boomer... ah now I'm starting to feel the itch again. Ok maybe I'll return sooner than I thought.
So cool to hear Christopher Paolini has been playing Minecraft since the early days like me, big fan of his Inheritance Cycle book series 🤓 going to have a look into his other works now, as those are the only books of his I currently own. As for my own Hermitcraft experience, you and Mumbo were actually the very first on my subs list, all the way back in S2! Along with Biffa, who I miss greatly 😔 many others were added (and sadly retracted) throughout the years and seasons, but I still watch most of you guys, and even a bunch of the Empires peeps! So happy to see the Minecraft community continue to grow and thrive even after all these years 💓
I know I've been playing Minecraft since 1.6, because I remember when horses were added (I had a long-term world from then, influenced by Stampy's Lovely World, but that has since been deleted when my account got hacked like five years ago). My first New World create (after the first one) was when the 1.8 update came out, because I wanted to experience the new stuff (I fell in love with the new stone and wood-types (especially the chocolate and birch doors), and that's also super nostalgic for me. I still remember my first day experiencing that update).
I didn't even know CZcams existed at that point, because the first time I ever watched a video, my brother pulled up CZcams on the TV (using the Wii, I think), and we just clicked on one of the videos, which happened to be from Stampy. At first I thought he was sad and lonely, because he was pretending to talk to people that weren't there, but then I got hooked and watched every single one of his Lovely World videos from the beginning (and realized that there were other people playing too. I really didn't understand Minecraft at that point). I didn't watch any other Minecraft CZcamsrs until like 6 years later, when I started watching Aphmau and Grian, because I didn't have the time to spend on CZcams, and didn't have my own computer (then Grian joined HermitCraft and the rest is history, and now I'm CZcams addicted (Yay)).
The first time I actually played was before that, but that was using the free MC in the browser (don't remember what it was called), but only on the school computers in the computer lab (because we couldn't afford Windows). And even before that, my first experience with Minecraft was when a family friend was playing Minecraft Beta (after seeing that, I wanted it, but I had to deal with a creative-mode-only Ubuntu knockoff, which was still really fun and is super nostalgic now).

I'm 22, I got into minecraft when my little cousin (who I love with my soul) moved to another country, so I decided that the best way to keep a good relationship with him would be to engage in something I knew he liked.
I downloaded the game, started learning, all my google searches got into the youtube algorithm and it directly led me to Dream's YT channel. Honestly I LOVED the content, it felt amazing and it really helped me understand a lot of the game, it also led to the algorithm recomending some other manhunt videos, and I still watch a few ocasionally.
A few months later I was starting to get involved in redstone, and I think that all my redstone wiki searches got me recommended one of Mumbo's videos, and from that moment I started diving into hermitcraft, now, I will watch Xisuma, Grian, Mumbo, Doc, Impulse, Tango, Gem, and a few others. But its a lot of content to keep up to, so I will just let you upload and once every few weeks I will do a big catch up.
I tried watching Dream SMP, but I didn't find it entertaining at all, let alone funny. I remember thinking that the big thing that the people over there offered was their name/identity, the jokes weren't funny, and a ton of stuff was suposed to be funny because some minecraft star said something directly related to sex.
Also, I found it to be WAY too scripted, it made me feel like they weren't genuine, which never ever ever happended in HC, a lot of the time its noticeable that both sides in a conversation know were it will end and what will happen next, but the fact that there is very little written about it makes it come as hyper genuine, and makes the reactions really funny, at least to me.
Just name dropping the creator of eragon like that lol. That's crazy though
I started following Hermitcraft right at the beginning of season 3 after hearing Marriland talk about it. Back then Mumbo seemed like the baby of the group for sure!
I’m just barely 13, and I started playing in 1.11, so I’m not old enough to fully grasp the nostalgia of things like alpha and beta but things like DanTDM, Ibalisticsquid, Stampylongnose and that 2015-2017 mc community heavily influenced my play style and even how i talk and go about my daily life. It also heavily affects my build style and as you said many of may friends are also long time players. While sure the dsmp is good for people that want story telling and long war like campaigns, but I like HC 10 times more bc it’s just a group of people with my play style and mindset. When I watch HC it’s effectively looking at a close mirror to how I play, build, and even talk
Personally, I became a fan of Dream SMP at the tailend of its peak, so I binged all the content I possibilly could. Then I was kind of burnt out on it and wanted something more chill and lighthearted. Turns out, Hermitcraft is perfect for that!

I think information bubbles in terms of location/language play a huge part in it too. As I first heard of minecraft when it was in Beta 1.5 or something, I was around 11 years old and watched a lot of Gronkh, a german gaming youtuber who's biggest success back then was his minecraft series. And his style of playing the game stuck with a lot of people in different ways, but I guess with me in a "mirroring it" type. He literally recorded himself playing alone on normal survival, talking to the audience in a very calming way, crackingsome jokes along while searching for coal/ores or continuing to build on his newest building. it was almost completely uncut, with only the cuts between episodes being actually made in the video editor.
And there was no "culture" about condemming certain blocks or something as building materials or looking up building patterns, but just having the joy to build and be part of the game, enjoying the atmosphere, almost no real grinding.
THen I drifted off into a different german sphere where it was "semi-scripted" in a way of "oh, everyone has a certain property" or "oh, we use now this exact modpack" and only getting into english speaking Minecraft youtube in 2021 with the start of Hermitcraft season 8, recommended by a friend.
So... the whole "grindgrindgrindPOMPTUOUSBUILD" or "hahalolrandom" minecraft play styles are somewhat new to me and it feels sometimes like the english community pressures one to achieve elytras in 2h or have diamonds in 3mins or grieve and prank a lot, but everyone plays minecraft differently and for different reasons, even if one really likes to watch other playstyles like in hermitcraft for example.
I started playing minecraft sometime in 2013, so not quite the beginning. Found hermitcraft just as you were all starting with season 3 and have been watching ever since.
My favorite early moment was your infamous "professional minecrafters" incident when everyone got stuck in a hole going to fight the dragon.
Mostly because just a week earlier the same thing had happened to me and my friend.
Ive read the books and played on a server at the same time as him christopher paolini. There is a server dedicated to building all the buildings that Eragon has gone into
say what you want about the dream smp but it was so fun watching the streams and interacting with the community, i made tons of friends through it that i still keep and honestly all the bad you hear from the community is mostly scrutinized stuff that doesnt happen often. the fandom is also pretty young so stuff like that is bound to happen. but yeah i think we're past the point where we can look back with fond memories of that time.
personally i really like hermitcraft too and honestly i think these 2 server perfectly encapsulate my way of playing minecraft (and videogames in general since minecraft is pretty much the only game i play lol), huge farms and beautiful builds but also goofing around with friends, pranking and stuff like that, and while hc does do the latter i feel like dsmp really took the "just friends having fun" dynamic so far i only watched it because of that and not the game.

I actually grew up mostly watching Denis and the pals (who if you didn't know is a roblox creator) the only minecraft related youtuber i've heard at the time was Dantdm (and i didn't see much off it). So for quite a long time, i was quite distant from the minecraft community and the game itself. Wasn't familiar nor attracted to join.
I started watching the dream smp after not watching any minecraft related content for years. I know it sounds weird, but watching the dsmp was also me learning more about minecraft and the game mechanincs.
After a while i found this wonderful community Hermitcraft. And let me tell you how shocked i was finding out about shulker boxes (which might sound funny for a veteran of the game).
The dsmp maybe what introduced me to minecraft, but Hermitcraft was how i really fell in love with the game.
As someone who grew up in the minecraft space, I have watched a lot of things. The DSMP being one of them, still watch some of them to this day, and I have to say there was something so weird about that server compared to HC.
Maybe it was how new, or young, the members were but it felt like a shift in time. Felt as if I was apart of something new and great. Sadly, I don't expect a new season of the DSMP due to the passing of Techno, but I would love to see some of the builders transition to HC and more episodic style content. People like Puffy and maybe Foolish are great builders, and family friendly. I know HC is more democratic in the way the server is run, so I can only wish, but it would be awesome to see new folks maybe next season.
What first got me into the whole Minecraft smp thing was Mianite (kind of a mashup between DSMP and HC), not as old or long as HC but it was very special cuz they were doing the lore/story telling really well for back then so it really opened my mind about MC and all of its possibilities. I started HC in ss6 thanks to Mumbo’s crazy redstone vids and his silly interactions with Grian, and now I binge watch every hermit 😊.
Christopher Paolini is a fan of Hermitcraft! Now that is one insane revelation, his Eragon Quadrilogy is insane.
I am a fan of both DSMP and Hermitcraft and I'm 28 years old. BUT DSMP was my first intro into MC in 2020. That's the first time I ever watched MC content which I admit is surprising considering I have been watching CZcams since 2011. I'm the type of person who enjoys story and chaos when it comes to content though which is why DSMP is so fun for me. I'm also the type of person who loves redstone and farms and pretty builds like Hermitcraft. I do wish I had the nostalgia of watching og Minecraft CCs but ya can't change the past. I make up for it now by watching SO many content creators. 😆

I play since minecraft browser, but since I was really young (and clueless) back then, I only watched stuff from my country since it was in language I understood, but when I was growing up, Bdubs was the first guy I started watching because I was the 'make builds' type of person and he was aways just amazing at it, honestly, since at first I had no clue what he was saying because english wasnt a thing in my country back then, he literally taught me english over the years(I passed the IELTS test with an 8 a couple years ago even though I never sat down to study) and watching his videos I found out more about the community, Mindcrack, hermitcraft, etho, beef, pause... Survival of the Fittest still is my favorite thing to come out of minecraft
I really enjoyed Dream's Manhunts because he knows how to edit a video really well and the mechanical skill level of players in that community (no offence) is higher than that of Hermitcraft so I find that aspect impressive. But you're totally right about the different demographics, as much as I liked the Manhunts I can't watch the Dream SMP. Of course I have nothing against that community or those creators but it's a style that doesn't suit me personally. Too loud, so much shouting and screaming and chaos for me. But I think even Hermitcraft has matured over time, there was a time I didn't want to watch Hermitcraft because it was aimed at a younger demographic than Mindcrack was (which was more my thing). I didn't come over to Hermitcraft until Etho/Doc/Beef did. Nowadays, even though it's still family friendly I feel as the members grew older so did the fans and the whole Hermitcraft community is more mature now. Not too long ago I gave Empire SMP a chance but I couldn't stick with it. Great people (love the Life series which merges their community with Hermitcraft's community) but the content on their server feels too childish, too much roleplaying and feels a little fake for my taste (for a similar reason I gave up on Hermitcraft S8 with the moon thing). Completely different from Dream SMP but also still aimed at a younger audience in my opinion. But there are so many niches of Minecraft, like CaptainSparklez and his group who do competitive games and more custom maps, there is the speedrunning community which I'm familiar with, and there must be more because there are always people I don't know in events like MCC. It's pretty interesting to consider all the different communities. For context, I'm 27, I grew up on Mindcrack, and Etho has always been my favourite Minecrafter and probably always will be!
am a huge fan of both HC and DSMP, i love both of so much the storytelling in both and alot of the creators, theyre both so diffrent but have amazing aspects in both. I men the prison on DSMP is kinda marvel in itself, while builds dont really often have chance to shine all of foolish's work was increadible, the build for tales of the smp as well. The restone and builds on hermitcraft are obviously a bit more intense but theres a suprising amount of overlap, i grew up on etho sense i was like seven, ive never understood redstone but i love him and tango work, Scar and Pearls building always wow me like no other too. And the story telling on both smps are honestly gripping, while DSMP is more story based id say the HC storylines are just as gripping and sometimes just as sad and heartbreaking as the DSMP ones, though often not as dark
would honestly love to see more overlap with the groups, cause the style of story telling with creators like quackity and karl jaccobs would be a cool thing to see on HC, and i hope to see more builds and redstone on DSMP season 2
It's quite interesting how and when people started watching Minecraft videos. I started playing around 8-9 years ago. And then I started watching videos only 2 or 3 years ago because I was too busy with my studies and work but I still was interested in the game. I guess many others had the opposite situation. They couldn't play the game as much as they wanted due to school but still could watch CZcams.
I love Dream content and I love hermitcraft. Same game, different style.
Watching my brother play, though he doesn't anymore, got me interested in playing, then Redstone came up and I came across mainly Mumbo with Impulse coming up when I wanted to know how sorters were made, and was curious about Hermitcraft, so I started watching, which was early on in Season 5. Thinking on it since, I should have watched more than only Mumbo during then since he didn't participate very much in community build. Especially with Season 9, those who only watch him were probably quite confused when he returned only to find out what they too missed out on.

A friend of mine was working at Bioware around the time of SW: The Old Republic. His team leader bought everyone on the team a Minecraft license to just tinker with. He told me about it and that's when I was introduced to it and started out. I didn't really get into it until I found Mumbo and Hermitcraft S6

I am in the younger age group, right now, and around school, you will see and hear many things about DSMP, but I could never really get into it. I was watching people like LDShadowlady and Dangthatsalongname, and then they led me to Grian and the Hermitcraft community. Now I love Hermitcraft, and a lot of the time, I want to talk to somebody about it, but no one knows what it is because they all watch DSMP.
I started watching/playing Minecraft because of Stampy and then slowly discovered Hermitcraft when I saw Bdubs, Keralis, and Chimney.
It was my first time seeing modded Minecraft when you guys played Attack of the B-team and I thought that it was really interesting.
I ended up trying out Minecraft after watching some of Matpads lore theory videos. I distinctly remember watching one on the ocean monuments the day that episode aired and thinking "huh, that actually looks pretty neat". Then i somehow ended up with watching some of the manhunt videos dream made, followed by challenge videos, 100 day survival, coding mods videos (Fundy!), watched some of the dsmp stuff (not realizing that there was difference between lore streams and just talking, so the whole situation between tommy and dream weirded me out), etc etc. Eventually i stumbled upon technoblades channel and ended up enjoying his sense of humor. A while later matpad released a video about hermitcraft, which intrigued me. I started watching grian and eventually a lot of the other hermits too. I then stumbled upon stuff like Minecraft story mode, the life series, empires SMP and origins SMP. Origins SMP is actually what introduced me to the idea of wanting to try modded Minecraft.
I then saw MCC, Mr beast events, etc etc. And eventually I saw a video pop up in my recommend: the video where Technoblade explained he had cancer. I cried. A lot. And I cried even more when he eventually passed away. I stopped watching most Minecraft content for a little while, eventually coming to terms with what happened. And then I started watching again. I even ended up building a giant techno head in one of my worlds. And while I'm still sad he's passed away, he is one of the biggest inspirations to me. Things like his famous "bruuuuuuhhhhh" remind me to keep a positive outlook on the world. Or at least, try to.
Minecraft is a really good game. And there's a lot of really good people playing the game, making content, telling their stories. To think i wouldn't have experienced all of that if I didn't have one coworker showing me this game they liked. If i didn't watch that game theory video. If i didn't give the game a try. It's funny how a seemingly simple block game can have such a profound impact on you.

I never really played video games much when I was younger? It was kinda pushed on me that they were for boys and I only knew minecraft as something my little cousin played. I didn't get minecraft until early 2019 when I was like 19 because the person I was dating at the time played. In looking for building tutorials, I found Grian & from there I discovered Hermitcraft. In talking with some of my younger friends & my cousin, we have had such a vastly different experience in how we've played the game and the content surrounding it that we consumed. One of my coworkers (who I've actually been friends with since around 2011) is actually also a fan of hermitcraft & has been for a much longer time than I... But we never talked about that until around when season 9 started, because I sort of still thought of playing minecraft as a bit of a "guilty pleasure" because in the back of my mind I still thought of it as a game for middle school aged boys. I've since made friends in the minecraft & hermitcraft fandom, many of whom are the same age if not older than me & so many of them have such nostalgia about the game, they've been playing since they were kids. I wish that I had found it sooner. Hermitcraft & minecraft in general have become one of my biggest interests & have made so many memories for me.

Started watching minecraft CZcams bc crankgameplays did a colab with shubble.
Didn't stick around with her content long, but she was on a server with captainsparkez and his content stuck with me.
Eventually moved over to watching X33N's pov of all their series together bc he's the less pg side of it, and I get a kick out of that.
Somewhere along the way, honestly do not remember where it started - probably one of his tutorials - started watching Pixlriffs, and then empires/HC crossover led me here 🥰
And now I'm deep into the SMP side of minecraft CZcams and there's so much content to consume both on yt and in the Fandom, it's amazing 🥰

This video surprisingly broke me. I didn't expect it, but hearing that Gem was fourteen when she started playing mc and was watching Etho back then made me rethink what i've done when i was fourteen. Answer? Nothing. When I was fifteen I left school without consequences, and wasted over three years of my life. Now I'm eighteen, with no perspectives and no will to change anything

I started Minecraft around 1.16 beta so like 1.15 times, I used to watch DSMP though i am not into that kinda gameplay it was like a fun tv show kinda thing for me. Was fun to watch.
I usually enjoy Redstone builds so I used to watch mumbo and lil of grian as I lack aesthetics mindset to learn ig.
That why I started watching hermitcraft very recently and now I watch docm77 mostly, mumbo, grian, the hot guy!, etc
I think I was 13 when I was watching Etho and started playing Minecraft, about 10 years ago, now I watch maybe a dozen different Hermits including Geminitay (before she joined Hermitcraft actually) I was so excited when she joined, I get to see her interact with some of my favourite Hermits. It's wild to me to think me and Geminitay started so similarly. At such a similar time and age.
This is so interesting to listen to, I first picked up Minecraft in beta, and at that time I mostly watched the odd tutorial, then Yogscast. Years later I picked up mumbojumbo looking for redstone tutorials, and mostly ignored his hermitcraft stuff. It was actually Dream's manhunt videos that made me realise how fun collaborative Minecraft could be, and then I watched the life series, and finally, after being with MCYT for literal years, gave season 8 of hermitcraft a chance.

Remember watching keralis in season 2 i think it was, and to think i was 13-14 at that time is so wierd. I’ve grown up with minecraft, i remember the items beeing on the same page (in creatice), i remember the hype around 1.13 update, it was amazing! And remember i did not understand elytras when They came, and horses was revolutionary for me. And look how far we have come
I was introduced to Hermitcraft late 2017 (midway Season 5) through Mumbo first. I didn't have access to Minecraft early on its release cause it wasn't that famous in my country and majority of the people didn't have access to fast internet until around this time (on the non-capital regions of my country).
Christopher Paolini liking Hermitcraft makes so much sense, especially with newer seasons. Paolini's one of the best fantasy world builders around (imo) and his fantastical worlds have a similar vibe to the sotries and fantasy feel that I get from the HC server.
