    Funny, I have the same light that you put up. I have tested many things by inserting 2 wires into an extension cord or receptacle as you did. I have stood on the top of a ladder (hating it) doing what you did. I did place 2 ratchet straps to lock the ladder to the pole (one about halfway and the other about 3/4 up). I found this steadied the ladder a bunch. My pole is round. I secured myself to the ladder with a belt also, in case I slipped. Growing up on the farm, my dad had me do more dangerous things than this, but I never liked this job. If anyone has ever priced an electrician with a bucket truck to do this, then they would understand why we take such risks. I also wear a tool belt to keep the tools and wire nuts handy. I could tell you have an understanding and respect for electricity, the aluminum ladder, and the danger you were in. This is another one of those jobs we hate to do but feel compelled, since we know how, and can save so much as a DIY. Awfully glad when their done though. Keep safe.

    You folks that are commenting on how scared you are because Gordon had a task that needed to be done, How do you maintain your homes? (Clean out gutters,Roof repair,Vents etc) Gordon was up about 15-16 feet,Not the end of the world, My Roof on my home is 16' to the gutters and 20' to the ridge. Battery ratchet?
    Hell, even a regular ratchet would do you better than a wrench!
    The optimal choice would be a simple battery powered drill with a socket on it.
    Great video...thx for posting!

    Gordon I'm with you that made me tense up there, one thing I might have done is to tie or strap the ladder at the top. That LED is the way to go.

    If you want a non impact cordless ratchet Home Depots Husky brand has a nice 12v 3/8 kit for 50$ right now. I bought two of them and so far I am impressed. I wanted to give them a try instead of over paying for Milwaukee again!

    It do not like the LED street light that @Oncore put up to replace our perfectly good light. This new LED is a non directional light an shines in one direction an does not illuminate 360 degrees around the pole.

    Gordon, I just wanted to add that in no way is this a job for the regular DIY person or the faint hearted. I have years of electrical experience and a history in electrical engineering. Aluminum ladders, electricity, loss of balance could be a bad combination. A mistake could cost you dearly. Just because a person with knowledge can do this, doesn't mean it is safe for everyone. FYI, I have a main breaker for the yard that kills all power which I now turn off.

  • @thebowtiefisherman5718

    Hey Gordon, Thank you for sharing. I was hoping you or any others with electrical skills could advise me. I have a light that's installed on a post very similar to yours by Jim Way. For some reason now it just runs continuously. It has a North direction light switch if that helps. Should I replace it, the bulb, or something else? It worked well for the past 6 years but now it won't turn off.

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  Před 3 lety

      If it's a light similar to what I replaced, it probably has a light sensor on top of the fixture that can be replaced by turning it to the left to unlock it and then pulling it off. Sometimes a dusk to dawn light has to be turned on by the switch for a few seconds and then turned off and then on again to put it in the automatic mode and then it will turn off after a few minutes and then on when getting dark outside. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

    Somebody swiped this video already...………… just kidding, I don't like working on ladders either, I really wouldn't like working by hot lines even more so. You got her done, the LED lights are good, mercury vapour lights are a pain, sodium lights are even worse. Where I used to work the company electricians said LED is the way to go. Every street light and every other exterior light got replaced with LED.
