    A good way to prevent this problem is to turn off a/c a couple of minutes before you turn off the car and put the heater to warmest setting. That will dry out the vent box and ducts. It will also prevent your windows from fogging up when you turn on the heater in the morning.

Tried it this afternoon (used roughly 1/4 of the can) followed Scotty's instructions to the letter and ... WOW ... the fusty smell has gone!! *update* have been a run out in the car tonight and switch between AC on and AC off quite a few times and "the smell" has completely gone. you can spray from the inside duct in passenger footwell(switch to recirc), as well.
    also, after you spray, turn off HVAC completely for 15-20min, that allows the lysol sit and percolate in system, fuming out and accumulating in system, killing the bugs. with this technique you only need to spray a smaller amount, say 15sec, after that turn back on and fully vent it out as needed. Thanks Scotty, u ROCK!!!

  • @Mike.D.843
    @Mike.D.843 Před 6 lety +86

    Good tip. A local Chevy dealership actually told me to do this once when I asked them about the smell coming from the vents in my truck.
    One add on tip to this, if you car has a cabin air filter make sure you replace the filter, but also, make sure the cabin air filter is removed when you spray the Lysol through there, other wise it will get saturated with Lysol which isn't good for the filter, and it also can make the Lysol not be as effective at killing the odors in the rest of the system.

    • @robde-e-e
      @robde-e-e Před 4 lety +7

      Some cars don't have a cover over the cabin-air-filter-housing (like Toyota Aygo). If you then remove the cabinfilter, that means there is a big 'leaking hole' which prevents the air&cleaner to reach the evaporator. So what to do then?

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  Před 14 lety +20

    @squidboy0769 The car I was working on didn't have a cabin air filter, many don't. and the cabin air filter will not stop mold and bacteria, it's not fine enough to filter out such small particles. Bacteria will get by the filter and then grow inside damp parts of the vent system, you can't stop them. Scotty Kilmer

      @@Unfinished_sentenc I have a G37 and my fan is right underneath the filter behind the glovebox. But all outside air has to pass through the filter so all you gotta do is just find out where yours is and spray through there. Sprayed through the outside vent too. I used damn near the whole can of Lysol early morning breeze scent. Turned off the ac afterwards and sprayed through the interior vents and let it sit for 5 minutes. Then just run the fan on high with the ac off to help get the Lysol smell out. You can use any disinfectant spray that says it neutralizes odors. Drive with the window down and run the fan with the ac off until the Lysol smell is gone cause it is strong. But my car smells like nothing now, a good thing. Might as well install a new filter that deals with odor and bacteria while you're in there. Where I live it's not really hot anymore so I waited till now so I won't have to deal with the smell till next year. But all you gotta do is use those little fogger cans as maintenance until the next deep cleaning with the Lysol.

    Both, you want ac on full speed fan with outside air, not on max air.

    Wholly Smokes your in Houston, I just recently fell in love with Houston and am now a resident myself. You've saved me more than a few dollars over the past couple months. Bought a good 05' Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo this month based on a lot of your "car buying guide" information. Thanks for all the info you share. It really helps folks like myself out a great deal. Especially when money is as tight as it is for most of us. God bless

    I found a good preventative way to keep most mold away is to run your vent about a mile before you get to your destination. This pushes all the cold air out, reduces moisture in the vents in-turn reducing the risk of more mold and bacteria.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  Před 11 lety +5

    pray it's not something burning inside the vent like the blower motor or resistor assembly. If not, often valve covers leak on the engine and get oil on the exhaust and smolder. Check that out first.

    turn ac on full blast for outside air, and outside air will dry it out.

    • @jackmak9941
      @jackmak9941 Před 3 lety +1

      INTERNATIONALNEWYORKMEXICAN it will wet your cabin filter and the spray can’t apply on the tubes surface to kill bacteria as good as filter removed
