    This is my first laptop and i learned many things from it. From upgrading to windows 10, learning legacy and UEFI boot and updating bios. I also try to use the windows 7 oem key to activate my newly installed windows 10 home and it works. Cool.

    Good review for those unaware, you can add 16 Gb of ram to max it out and add 1 Tb ssd drives (2) total and potentially 1 M2 hard drive internally for some decent storage. If you want more gfx power get one with a better card nvida etc.
    I recommend getting the 15 inch version with the number pad as this graciously increases the screen real estate.
    These are work horse computers and are super easy for fix for the cost. My standard go to system for value.

      What GPU do you suggest me for this machine?
      I got an external HDD and upgrading it to 8GB ram , and I need a good GPU suggestion. Thanks

    • @kristopherleslie8343
      @kristopherleslie8343 Před 3 lety +1

      @@chinmayhiremath5228 normally for these, since the cost is super cheap, I would max out the ram as it can hold 16 Gb successfully. I would strongly suggest taking the cpu out and cleaning it from the old paste and put the newer paste on. Dust it out. Make sure the GPU inside is also cleaned and new paste if needed. Remove the CD/DVD drive and put in a replacement HDD caddy that looks like a cd/dvd but gives you extra storage. You could put 2 SSD's inside now. I would suggest a 200-300 GB OS drive and a 500 to 1 Tb drive for data. Technically you could put 3 but you'd be giving up wireless so that depends on you and how you want to use msata. If you want the absolute best performance buy a i7, you'd have to use dell tech specs guide for the laptop to identify the fastest chipset it supports but it should be quad or 8 core if I recall. They are dirt cheap in 2021.
      As far as external gpu (if you want one), then use whatever external gpu, case and power you want as it should support whatever you want. I've done an external gpu with a laptop even older than this and it worked wonders for gaming. I would put an external monitor on it and call it a day :)

    • @kristopherleslie8343
      @kristopherleslie8343 Před 3 lety +1

      @@chinmayhiremath5228 one thing to keep in mind because these are decent on battery life but drain power fast, make sure you update the bios completely and all driver firmware. Also buy a laptop fan/mount/case to put it on, since it gets VERY hot. I've played games such as Diablo 1, DIablo 2 and Starcraft 1 and 2 with absolutely no issues. I've played other Blizzard-based games and it runs like a champ (if you're using an external GPU). If you use the internal GPU game speeds are likely between 20 Fps up to 50 Fps depending on settings. Exzternal gpu your only limited by the port you're using so you should be able to see 80-120 FPS if not more.
      Please be aware that during this COVID Pandemic, you may not have easy access to the best cards. But even if you pickup from a Fry's or Best Buy a decent low end video card for at or under 100 bucks it's going to go to work on your games. You'd likely be able to do medium to high end settings. If you want the best you're going to have to pay 250.00 and up.

    Missed several upgrades that make this machine still compete with todays WORK laptops.
    - Upgrade the main HD to a 1TB SSD (that is an easy one)
    - The laptop actually supports 16GB of Ram if you upgrade to the latest BIOS
    - WiFi card can be upgraded to the latest Intel AX200 WiFi 6 so you can get 2.4Gbps speeds
    I already did these upgrades on my old laptop and it really makes it lightning fast. The extra memory is the big one because it is shared with the Video card. Using a docking station it can handle 2 monitors (3 if you have the laptop open) at 1080p quality.
    With those upgrades it is an extremely fast laptop that is still very good to work on.

    • @Lothos_
      @Lothos_ Před měsícem

      @@nathanj7423 no, it's impossible to upgrade the graphics card. However if you upgrade the memory on the laptop then the graphics card already on the laptop will work better because it uses part of your memory for its memory.
      I did forget to mention this is probably one of the only laptops I ever seen where you can upgrade the processor. I upgraded mine to a quad core and bought the stronger cooler for it. So it went from a Dual Core to a Quad!
      You must get the better cooler with additional heat pipes if not it will over heat.

    I took a E6540 on vacation last summer. It's sporting an i5 quad core. Most of my co-workers prefer the 65X0 series with the larger keyboard. The one I had was Intel GFX, but it ran Fallout 3 and New Vegas very well. I replaced the HDD with a Samsung 250GB EVo 850 SSD and the DVD drive with a 1TB Western Digital Black via a bay hdd adapter. The new 6570 have no DVD drive, but you can do dual drives via the msata and 2.5" bays. In a pinch there are 2.5" drive adapters that will support dual Msata drives for raid or dual drive configurations if you wanted more drives or redundancy...

    I upgraded my E6420 XFR to an i7-2820QM Quad-Core Hyperthread and 16G RAM. The additional 10W of TDP didn't make much of a difference, and I use HWiNFO64 to control its fan speed. The XFR's touchscreen and daylight viewable display is a real plus, and the upgrades made it future-proof at least for another few years. Great little machines.
    As for an upgrade, something similar to my Dell M4700 mobile workstation might work well for you - I also maxed out the RAM (32G) and upgraded the CPU to an i7-3840QM.

    here in 2019 I just bought one of these to replace my crummy HP. I tossed in a 240GB SSD, 1TB mechanical drive replacing the Optical CD-ROM. Currently have 8GB of RAM but after looking around it can handle 16GB so I plan to give that a try. I am also debating to upgrade the CPU since it is a socketed CPU and currently the i7 variant for it is dirt cheap on eBay. I might also toss in a USB 3.0 card, about 90% of my USB devices are USB2 but having USB3 for file storage is a nice idea.
    For a system that was released in 2011/2012 is still way much faster and cheaper then the Walmart budget models from Acer Aspire and HP Stream models currently sitting on their shelves.

      you can also add or change the HDD to an almost no sound, much much faster SSD drive which you can get for ~20eur 120gb or ~30-60eur 240gb. Though if you want to add instead of replace you would need a drive caddy which are 6-30eur. If you put windows on SSD, your pc would turn on much faster.

      M Harsha Gopal There is a product called the exp gdc, it allows you to plug it in via expresscard or mini pcie on the inside of the computer, the mini pcie is faster, but depending on what computer you have you may have to sacrifice the WiFi card and get a usb WiFi adapter, but if you have the latitude e6420, it should have two extra mini pcie slots that aren’t taken up by any WiFi cards or anything. After you get the exp gdc, you can get an nvidia card and plug it in, you can find some pretty good tutorials by looking up Dennis G egpu on CZcams.

    Would this make a decent laptop for a college-bound student in 2017? I like the model with the i7 quad core and a 9cell battery. Compared to the newer laptops the performance seems to be almost double only at the expense of battery. The newer machines are more power efficient but have less overall power. The only downside is that this machine is nearing 5 years old. My other option is an e5470, but it has a built in battery and scores 2000 less passmark points. Only pro of the new one seems to be DDR4 and is not old.

    • @kilobyte9185
      @kilobyte9185  Před 7 lety

      Andrew Johnston For typical workloads, these make a great laptop. if you opt for an SSD, these things rival most modern laptops. the drawbacks are the bulky size, and the not so great screen.

    • @andrewjohnston99
      @andrewjohnston99 Před 7 lety

      I can manage size and I plan on being a computer science major so the display does not have to be super sharp. I was thinking of the e6430 but I never thought about adding a USB 3.0 card to it. However, the e6430 benefits from Ivy Bridge. My institution recommends a machine that is 2-3 years old so I am trying to justify age by performance. Thanks for your input!!

    • @marlonlyn2719
      @marlonlyn2719 Před 7 lety

      Do to several reasons, USB 3.0 via ExpressCard slots is not recommended:
      -The Dell e6420 only has ExpressCard I and doesn't achieve the full speed of USB 3.0.
      -I purchased the ebay card for it, but it doesn't lock / stay in.
      -USB 3.0 Specifies a higher Amperage requirement, and requires you to plug it into a USB port.
      My Recommendation is the following:
      -Get the e6430 (USB 3.0, ExpressCard II built in)
      -Purchase the Docking station with USB 3.0 in it.
      -Purchase the eModule that has USB 3.0 in it.
      -Use the built in eSataP the laptop comes with. (Keep in mind, the Laptop has SATA II, so certain SSD Drives will be limited)

    • @falldmg6306
      @falldmg6306 Před 5 lety

      hacking tutorials it is not possible, the gpu is not socketed, and is soldered in, unless you have extreme skill with desoldering components like that and have the right materials, and can find a more powerful gpu that would be compatible, it is not possible. There is a way to have a faster gpu that wouldn’t be too expensive, if you get an external gpu, I would recommend getting the exp gdc v8.0, it can connect either by the express card, or the mini pcie port in your laptop, most laptops only have one mini pcie port, which contains the WiFi card, so if your laptop only has one, you would need to get a WiFi USB adapter card, if you are using the latitude e6420 it has two unused mini pcie ports on the inside which you could plug it in by, I would recommend the mini pcie version because it has less of a bottleneck for the gpu you use and I have heard of a lot of problems with the express card version. You can find a good tutorial on doing this by looking up Dennis G egpu.

      So, remove battery and hold down the power button to get rid of residual power. Take out all the screws and remove the HDD (Hard Disc Drive) don’t lose them put them on a plate in a box some kind of container. Remove the cover, down low near the middle of the computer are two RAM ports, remove/add your ram depending on if you are putting in another 4gb to dual channel or two 8gb sticks to max out its 16gb cap. Put the cover back and put your HDD back and screw everything back in. Boot to make sure everything still works, if not trouble shoot on the internet to find a solution to your particular issue. If all goes well you should be done and it should work.
