I bought the QHD touch 7480 about in 2021. Since then the Battery charging cct needed replacing after a year. I think playing games overheated the chip on it. Both touchpad buttons have ceased to function but I just adapted to using the pointstick alternates. Happy with it and its so light with the touch screen it has replaced my tablet a lot of the time. This was my 2nd latitude and really happy with the brand.
Glad you're happy with it despite the parts failure. 😂
if the touchpad buttons are the lower two, it's a really cheap and easy to replace part. Taking off the backplate is the longest part of the job
Bought one of these for $79 shipped and its honestly really good for the money and I would recommend it as a good starter
Glad you got a good deal.
It's a good machine. I have one that's working well for the last 6 years. Replaced battery two times and changed the motherboard/RAM to try and fix an issue that is in fact a major flaw for these devices.
The case is not rigid enough! If you keep it with one hand the back panel warps and moves the RAM in their slot. You can kiss that session goodbye and you need to reboot. That's the only issue I have with this laptop.
Also, when buying used you should keep in mind that the SSD might have endured some heavy usage. Replacement might be due.
Thanks for providing your experience!
Really thorough presentation of this device. Thank you!
You're most welcome. I hope you found it useful.
@@LaptopRetrospective - I actually was looking for info on the CMOS battery and in which circumstances it would become discharged (e.g. if main battery was flat) but I thought your review was so good that I wanted to pass a complimentary comment.
Really appreciate you taking the time, love hearing from people.
very informative, thanks for the video!
You're welcome! Hope it helps.
I run one of these laptops and honestly it was good seeing what was running in it, I run some fair sized games on it, and that little fan is super loud, and was actually the reason I was looking for videos on it, also im extremely shocked how much they sell for, i bought mine for $200
Is it worth buying? I'm just looking for laptop with 4g lte with hdmi
With a 7490, I have 40 units, most common problem is webcam, microphone, speakers stop working and I think it is with Windows 10 and the sleep function as the users open and shut them all day. Sometimes a driver reinstall works, or a remove from device manager also works.
Interesting! Thanks for the heads up that those are some parts to watch.
That's a weird one. With windows 11, the 7490's we run at work have an odd issue with the touch screens not working after you wake it up from sleeping sometimes.
Very informative video.
Thanks! It's what I aim for.
One of the better points of this machine is that it has a five button track pad instead of an emasculated clickpad and there is a track point which some users out there still like. The keyboard could be better but at least isn't as horrible compared to countless others beyond that it looks ok for college use minus not having a gpu.
True, nice to see those dedicated buttons.
got the 7490 with the 8th gen i7 running linux mint and im loving it.
Awesome. What work are you doing with it?
@@LaptopRetrospective Still figuring it out. right now im learning how to use an open source audio production software called Ardour.
i got that processor inside a lenovo thinkpad t480, actually i already bought 3 pieces with the same setup, touch display, fingerprint, all the goodies. Running every machine with Debian, the model with 24gigs (upgraded by me) even runs 2 VMs with Windows 11 simultaneously, while the host does at least one further long running task. no cooling problems so far. I am planning to add this Dell to my collection soon, so glad you love it, cheers!
I wonder if I could dual boot from an SD linux distro
Bought a 2nd hand 7490 1 month ago, good purchase Battery is showing its age.
Might be good to replace it, if you need battery life. What size came with it?
What does that mean? Battery is showing its age
That usually means the battery isn't at a decent capacity and isn't lasting very long. All batteries wear down with time and use.
I honestly don't get it when people remove the bottom panels from dell laptops then dump them for sale on eBay particularly the smaller machines while higher end models typically come complete other times only missing the drive, drive caddy, and maybe the battery. Anyway of this era I would have gotten a 77x0 instead because I like my machines being a bit quicker than a 80s Casio calculator.
loved the review i got latitude 7490 with core i5 8th gen16gb and 256gb with face id and touch it is pretty much a great laptop for college studies and coding programming etc but the thing i regret is that is should have bought a non touch model because touch is not that much productive beside scrolling because it is not x360 thats why it whobbles when touching with a stylus or just a pen , btw its used
Interesting points on the downsides of the touch model. Glad you found the video helpful.
Definitely a board swap in this case, the top sticker says Core i7 Inside with no mention of which generation - Intel only started mentioning that with stickers for 7th gen and newer, so this would originally have been a 7480 with a 6th gen processor. With all the reliability issues I bet it failed at some point and the owner took the opportunity to upgrade it.
Hmmm interesting theory. Thanks for sharing.
I was considering getting a 7480 but with your comment I am better informed and might skip it and go for the 7490. What do you think? I don't want my laptop to fail on me.
@@ekeretteekpo3004 7490 have an 8th gen, so you could use Windows 11. If I am correct, 7480 had a 7th gen, not a 6thgen.
Seems like a decent offering for $140 in my country with i5 8350u and 8/256 config
But not sure it will do thunderbolt
I picked up a refurbed 14" 7480 7300U laptop this week with 1080p/16GB and 250GB SSD for £150! Condition was good for an ex corporate and the replacement battery was still playing 1080p video down to 53% after two hours so I was happy with that. I did swap the RAM for 16GB of matching dual rank and the SSD for a 500GB Intel H10 I had laying around. It doesnt see the Optane part but this gen didnt support the combined Optane drives, just the original separate cache ones. Replaced the thermal paste and put a fresh build of 10 on it (it came with 11). Will be perfect for knockabout work use. I just didnt want to risk my £1200 Framework!
It's nice to have a machine that you're not worried about getting a few nicks and dings.

I bought it as as a DJ Laptop and pimped it with a 3 TB SSD - Card plus 1 TB MiniSD Card and 32 GB RAM. The RAM Expansion is very important for this PC. The start time is 9 seconds. I have really very low latency. This is very important for a DJ Laptop. The new Version costs me now all inklusive about 1000 EURO for a very good working Laptop.
Nice upgrades!

Not a bad choice!
I had bluescreens on 7480 with w10, works fine with Linux
Could be OS related of course but could also be drivers.
I just picked up a 7490 i5, 16 GB, 256 GB, FHD screen. Good so far except for Battery is down to a 1/3 or so if its original capacity, I would estimate judging from reviews I've read. Not sure which of the two batteries it has. I'll see if the local seller will warranty it. I had a 7480 I used with a Dell USB C dock with power supply I used as my desktop (at Dell). Worked well.
A new battery shouldn't be too much trouble to locate and it would be easy to install. Most sellers won't warranty a used battery unless they explicitly state that they will up to a certain percent.
@@LaptopRetrospective as I've got to take the cover off anyway, I might upgrade it to 500 GB nvme while I'm at it. They're cheap enough now.
That's a nice upgrade!
@@LaptopRetrospective So it has the smaller 3-cell battery. Looks like there's no reason the larger one shouldn't fit. I've read that it should work. The current one is pretty bad, about 1h40m on a full charge. The onboard diagnostics show the battery condition as "poor". And it cuts right off at about 20%.
Yeah I'd replace that. 😂
I just purchased a reasonably high spec refurb from Amazon, and these comments have me a bit scared! So far though, it's been perfect.
You probably have a little less to fear if a professional refurbishment took place.
I bought a refurbed 7480 with a 7300u last year. Added another stick of ram and recently bought a new battery and it has been faultless. Love it for general browsing etc.
Nice detailed videos, thanks. Just fyi, getting the 7490 isn't necessarily a benefit, I bought a 7480 specifically because it has some of the best battery life you can get, that and fhd were all I cared about. The 7490 has worse battery life, it's around 25-40% less than the 7480, depending on the task.
Yep, completely depends on your needs which is better.
Battery backup?
I own a 7480, its a very good machine. The one thing I would like to point out is the USB-C could support Thunderbolt depending on which CPU you got. From my understanding is that 6th Gen didn't get the option, even though in the BIOS shows the option. I believe its 7th Gen on up that had the option.
I didn't see much mention of TB in the 7480 manual but it's not the easiest document I've been navigated.
@@LaptopRetrospective I think a lack of TB was a oversight that should have been included. But its a business machine. Now would I choose this over my T440s or similar ThinkPad, that's a hard decision. I think for the money a ThinkPad T470 would have been the better choice. But I don't regret buy this machine.
i have a latitude 7480 with a 6th gen with thunderbolt
Oh? What CPU do you have?
@@LaptopRetrospective i7 6600u
Bought a used Latitude 7490 a year ago for study and programming, it was really powerful and working well sadly the display stopped working after like 6 months of using it. I think it is a motherboard issue (it isn't related to the screen since it works when swapped on another laptop). Before I got problems with the display, the laptop was running very hot even while doing basic tasks. The thermal paste probably was dry or the cooling wasn't working properly and the temps caused issues to the mobo. Should've taken care more of this laptop, maybe it wouldn't have happened.
I bought a new motherboard from eBay for very cheap, hope I didn't got scammed I'll update on the situation
Best of luck on your repair.
Insightful video! I enjoyed every bit of it. It seems the 7480 and 7490 have very interchangeable parts. Do you think a screen swap would work? I have both of them and I really want to keep the 7490, but it has a 1366x768 screen, meanwhile the 7480 has a full HD touchscreen. Do you think if I swap the entire upper chassis, it would still work for the 7490?
It's not impossible. Feel free to dig through the maintenance manuals for part numbers and see if they are the same.
I'm looking to do a motherboard swap 7480 to 7490, I will let you know if I am at least successful.
I had the 7480 i-5-6300u. It had the ultra HD touch screen. On eBay I bought a 7490 board with a i-5-8350u. I looked all over the place and couldn't find anyone who would done this motherboard swap but I decided to try it anyway. To my surprise, it was plug and play for everything except for the touch screen connector which had changed formats between the two models. I will gladly trade my touch screen for stability. I still can't believe this worked, since the 7490 never came with a screen of that resolution. Ymmv.
Edit: I mean to say that the screen works perfectly except that touch functionality is dead.
That's awesome you got this working. I'd be willing to bet if you really wanted to there would be a way to plug that in as well.
@@LaptopRetrospective thanks man, I think you're right, to be honest with you I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to board level repairs and don't know the name of either kind of connector, so it would be difficult for me to look them up.

Thinkpad T550
Letitude 5540
Commenters seem to be split on the reliability of this machine. The T550 is a larger device but better liked.
I am wondering if the product designers of those two models already knew the importance of the difference between 7th/8th gen :D Maybe they wanted to create maximum confusion for everybody looking for a W11 compatible machine.
Not sure, the gap in generations could be as wide as 6 vs 8th gen.

been using a Latitude 7490 for 3 years now, And it took me 2 years to realize what that USB-C port was capable of, in all the photos from dell it shows a thunderbolt logo, however its not thunderbolt? mine has a DP-alt mode symbol. So i had been only using it for a USB-C to HDMI cable.

I appreciated this video a lot. You explained everything very clearly and simply.
I'm currently deciding between a thinkpad 490 (i5 8365U, 512 gb ssd, 16gb ram, windows 10, no USB-c) and a dell latitude 7490 (i5-8350U, 512 ssd, 16gb ram, windows 11) with the thinkpad being 30 euro more.
I've heard so many fors and againsts for both, it's hard to decide.

Beyond that, I have 2 more expensive options which include lenovo think pad x1 yoga g7 (i7-7600U, ssd 512, ram 16gb, iris xe graphics, windows 11, touchscreen, 3.5ghz processor) and a lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon g7 (i5-8365U, ssd 256, 16gb ram, 1.1kg)

All of these are refurbished.

@@LaptopRetrospective for €55 cheaper i can get a i5 8th gen with 8gb ram instead of 16gb ram. For which one should i go? I’m thinking 16gb ram to compensate with the laptop being refurbished
The laptop being refurbished isn't going to impact its speed so I don't understand why more RAM would be needed.
do you think this laptop with an i7, 16 GB ram, 512 GB SSD suffice for music production?
or might a hp elitebook 840 with an i7-6600 instead of an i7-700 be better
Check your system requirements for the software you intend you use carefully. I'd go with the most up to date CPU your budget can afford balanced with whatever other requirements you have beside raw performance.
How about the baterry durability of 60wh ? For office apps?
I need laptop that have good battery durabillity, i have x1 carbon 6th, but it can only last about 2 hours..

If your X1 Carbon is lasting 2 hours only and if the battery is in good health, it might be a use case issue.

If you find one with 8th generation CPUs then I'd say it's a good choice. Wouldn't be my first though if others were available.
@@LaptopRetrospective wow thanks for replying me!
can you recommend another laptop that is equivalent to this laptop?
Like the price i mean...
Price is tricky because that will entirely depend on what is available in your area. Personally I'd want to compare this against the ThinkPad T480 or T480s.

@@LaptopRetrospective I’m sorry one more question. are the USB ports actually 3.0? Mine are not blue but it has the “SS” thing next to it.
Yes, many manufacturers don't color their USB ports anymore. Super Speed is more or less another name for a type of USB 3.0
@@LaptopRetrospective Okay cool, so will a blue usb 3.0 still work then in that case ? even though it’s black on the laptop?
Yes, the color is not a reliable indicator.

I got a offer the same laptop which has Intel i7 7600u, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, No touch, Windows 10Pro, Intel HD Graphics 620. For about 250USD. Is it ok to buy or not?
Not too bad if it's in good shape and has a charge on the battery that's decent. Note that it won't officially support Windows 11.
@@LaptopRetrospective should I upgrade it or not
That really depends on what you need your laptop to do. You won't be upgrading the CPU as it's soldered.
what is your take on running mismatched memory
Not ideal if you want to take advantage of dual channel functionality/compatibility. However when you need RAM, needs must.

The locking/security mechanism is called a "Noble Lock"-type
Thanks for pointing out the lock type. Couldn't remember it. This should do just fine for online classes. 8th gen CPU especially. Keyboard is good, but not the best I've used. Web camera is decent and in the right place.
Can I use it for autocad
Always check your system requirements against the specific hardware configuration you're looking to buy. 👍
Is it possible to connect 2 displays via USB C port?
The chipset supports multiple displays. Without a docking station to split the USB-C port you will need to use another port. One for each display.

You'll have to check what that specific version of USB-C supports. Unfortunately it isn't the same for all USB-C ports.

@@LaptopRetrospective Exactly, we are using Latitudes in work for years and there are almost no functional devices leftover after the support expires. I've bought 6 of them in the last 2 years (all from Ebay, Used). Here is my experience below.
1. 7480 (1) - was declared as excellent from 99.8% positive seller. What I got in fact - motherboard that was generating memory errors. coil wine on charge, great keyboard.
2. 7480 (2) - was declared greate with FullHd - received with HD. Replaced screen, and everythinf else is ok - this item is using by my relative.
3. 7490 (3) - was declared as excellent from 98% positive seller. I've got screen replaced to the same specs but worse, coil wine on C-states when cpu clocks above 3Ghz, tiny keyboard defect, battery near dead.
I've mixed keyboards and screens between 1 and 3 - one of them sold, another one use.
4. 7390 (4) - as declared, except keyboard had to replace, cause 4 keys was broken. new chineese battery was installed. I was surprised it is Full HD TN Touch. Keyboard is much worse than on 7480/7490, but wow... the touchpad on 7390 is pretty nice (on 7490/7490 the touchpad is very poor by design). Sound system not as good as on 7480/7490.
I prefer 13.3, but 7390's overall design is much worse except size. I would defenitely prefer 7390 if it had keyboard the same quality and layout as on 1st 7480 just a little smaller, sound system the same as on 7480/7490, ips touchscreen.
5. 7490 (5) - as declared (parts, not working), but IPS panel has different colour tempreture on the left and right parts of the screen. Keboard not as good. Mainboard is okay. Yesterday repaired it.
6. 7490 (6) with 2560*1440 touch - will receive soon, hope it's a good IPS, not TN as on 7390.
I'm waiting 6th, and likely will swing some components between 5th, 6th and one that was mix of 1st and 3rd to get at least one in really good condition.
I like 7480/7490 design very much except several things:
1. 14" size anyway too small to use on a table, but 13.3 better when use on hands. So I'd prefer it coud be the same, but a little smaller, I'm ok with external display and keyboard/mouse when use on a table.
2. PWM keyboard backlite (looks nice, but flicker free would be better)
3. Bad power lines cooling that effect in high noise when operates from AC and charges battery the the same time, with no software correction for that.
4. Poor tochpad
If you think, the same as me, that 7480/7490 design is a way way better than 7410 or 7420 or 7430 and almost any laptop - and this difference is extremely important for you - than you can buy a used dell latitude 7490 - there is 80% chance you will have either to change mainboard, or keyboard, or display, or something else even you buy it from 99.99% positive seller and seller declares the item in great condition. So.. if you do not think that 7490 is a way better than othe laptops, 7410 for example - better stay away from it, cause almost any used 7490 that you can buy is defective. If you like this model very much and ready for repair - then buy it)).
Lots of great insight here. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I think you're 7390's screen might have been replaced at some point. Because I got one 7390 FHD touch screen model which is an IPS. Checking Dell's sheets, there s no FHD model with a TN panel for 7390. My biggest problem with this laptop is that it s spacebar only responds when pressed in the middle. Left and right edges are very very unresponsive. That makes typing experience a hell.
Interesting note about the keyboard, I didn't notice that personally. I'm guessing you have checked under the key for debris and dirt?
@@LaptopRetrospective I sure did. This seems like a common problem among this line of DELL laptops. Seen a lot of complaints from 72,73 series users experiencing the exact same problem with the space bar.
Shame about that, hopefully lessons were learned on the newer generations.
