The symbols that you didn't recognize when you were looking for numbers are numbers. They are just reflected across a vertical plane. Try covering up the left half of each of the symbols (like the "heart" or the "eight") and you will see that it's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 with vertical symmetry.
