I’ve been playing for more than 50 years and this single tip has improved my ball striking dramatically. Thanks Steve.
Steve, you certainly know how much I appreciate this lesson! Many thanks.
been following you for over a year and subscribed to your online content. you bringing to life the book for me has been the best set of vids yet. I shot my first solid round in the 70`s last week. Thank you.
Have used this method and your vids for some time now and now play off a 1 handicap at 75 years old. Thanks for your wonderful videos. Gazza NewZealand.
Superb Gazza. Well done👍👍👍
Watching this I went and tried it in the garden..... amazing the swing is so much faster and feels in more control. Well done Steve, I wouldn't have thought it could make so much difference but it does.
Brilliant this. I've been struggling really badly with grip pressure particularly in my right hand and this is the best tip I've seen in ages. Just tried it in the garden and it feels spot on. Can't wait to try it on the course.
Can’t wait to try this new grip technique Once again, thank you for improving my game !!!
Steve's the man. Full of knowledge and brill tips that actually do help. Enjoyed my lesson last week big man(stack and tilt ). 👍🏴🇨🇮☘️
That’s incredible Steve, it really works! Took it straight from the range to the course.
What a fantastic tip. Tried this at the range today and oh boy the contact was so sweet. Can't wait to try it at the course. Thanks Steve
Funny how the simplest things in golf make the most difference. Thanks Steve.
Exactly Mike👍
Absolute gem! Love your work Steve… brilliant!!!
Brilliant! Love yòur easy natural humor! Always informative and fun. Thank you, bro!
This grip advice is amazing. I ´ve been always struggling with tension. I ´ve never hit the ball like last time without thinking about backswing, weight transfer, etc... just focusing in hitting the ball. Amazing. You have changed my golf life. Thank you a lot
Spot on Steve, I purchased Hogans book 25 years ago and to this day frequently refer to it. I’m a new subscriber to your channel because of your videos bringing Hogans book to life. Love them. Keep up the good work!
Another great simply explained video and good to see your reference to a previous video you did with driver firing through the ring of fire when you used the right forefinger to fire through the shaft and possible contradiction. Elbows in is really working for me keep it coming Steve 👍
Thanks Steve always look forward to your videos but just wanted say thank you for this explanation it really helped me to hit my driver Straight (er) especially useful was folding the lifeline of right hand over left thumb. I have never seen this explained so clearly before so important for a late beginner like me. 👍👌😊
This is superb knowledge being passed along here. Thanks very much.
Tried this afternoon kin amazing I was getting through the swing like never before. Cracking mate cheers
You're absolutely right I've never heard of this tip before, but it works magnificently. Thanks
This was a really good tip. Worked nicely in the sim today
Definitely going to try this asap. Thanks Steve another great video.
Always something to be gained from your videos. Thank you.
Another one to try tomorrow evening, thanks Steve
Awesome tip. Works for every club, even chips and puts 👍⛳️
You are fantastic and good to easterly showing how the golf swing and gripping the clubs work great tips 👍❤️
Very interesting. I’ve been messing with the middle two fingers to grip more with those. Glad to see I’m on the right lines!! Cheers mate!!
super stuff there yet again, Thanks Steve
Thanks Steve I really appreciate your videos that have been inspired by Hogan…it’s been very helpful…all the videos on grip have been super helpful.
Keep up the good work!
I am playing golf for 25 years and know every single tip on youtube (:-D). Never heard this before. Great video. :-)
Yet another great tip, thank you
Outstanding advice!
will definitely try this grip next time out. totally makes sense, will try anything at this point. thanks.
Fantastic video!
Really interesting, haven’t heard about the negative influence of the RH thumb & forefinger before. Cant wait to get out and try this. Thanks
Glen Wood, it’s exactly what I was going to say. I’m 66, and I’ve been playing golf since I was 13. I’m not exaggerating when I say that this may be the single best tip I’ve ever had. It’s exactly as Steve says. When you swing with this right hand grip change, you can feel the club dropping inside. I was always using pressure on the thumb and forefinger which caused tension, over the top tendency and difficulty releasing the club head.
The strike now feels so different. It actually gets your entire body more in sync.
All from a simple grip change.
It’s nuts!
Thanks Steve
Excellent Michael 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Quality vid and instruction once again Steve.
Read the Ben hogan book and this was so helpful to be broken down. Thank you very much. I have been casting a lot lately and the grip has just felt uncomfortable. I believe this will definitely help.
Very, Very Informative; can't wait to give it a go.
I wish I had discovered your channel sooner, you would save me hours of frustration on the range, never mind the golf course. Phenomenal, hands-on, but most importantly result-improving instruction. All this with a good sense of humour. One question, would this technique work equally well with the driver? Thank you.
Great explanation!
...you're right, never seen or heard this tip before - it seems to make a lot of sense, I have tried a few in our net today (as rained off here in Newcastle), and my strike was pretty good. I shall be looking at some more, just about to get into "do not turn your shoulders" - thanks.
Slow motion replays of Vijay Singh in his pomp showed his right hand almost of the golf club, love your work!
Thank you for showing this, never would have discovered this, another golden nugget.
A great tip, really helps a lot! Thanks 👍
Excellent video again Steve 👍⛳️
Great video! I will practice this tomorrow.
Love this guys instruction.
Thanks Randell✅✅
Teaching feel in golf is not easy to say the least but nobody on youtube that I know of does it like Steve. If you already know how a golf club should be swung mechanically, this is the guy you need to follow.
that is one great advice. I could feel may swing casting when i put pressure with my thumbs. never knew how much affect that had with my swing.
Nice! You're channel has given me the confidence to try breaking 90. You're my Ben Hogan swing coach. Distance is fine, swing is getting better, , tactics are good. Just need to groove in some consistency when laying up to chip into green..
Very very good. Thank you.
Nice one Steve….I’m trying to flatten downswing…..will be trying this grip tip!
Cannot wait to try this one tomorrow..🏌️♂️
Thanks Steve, I’ll try this at the range tomorrow.
Steve, the smash sound you are making is incredible
Kaboom 💥
@@stevejohnstongolf I covet that kind of power!!!😂😂😂
STEVE, ,
It's so Logical about those fingers I started my Golf life, with the Ben Hogan book my brother brought for me, back in the late 60s,, 24 was the highest Handicap then,, and after my 3cards went in my 1st Handicap was 17,, within a year I got down to 10,, then finally down to 5,, how years & illnesses ave caught up with me, I'm 75yrs old and was off 10,, But now with the NEW Slope business,, I'm 13.4,,, But I'm still trying to improve,, and with arthritis in both hands,,,And That Clip of yours with the 2 middle fingers which I've been doing for ages ,, I tweaked it around a bit, and its improved my strike better,,, CHEERS STEVE, ,,
So Good, can't wait to use in my next medal round. Thanks again.
Great information
WOW - that is insightful!
Great explanation, thanks 😊!
Great explanation
Great tip
Great lesson Steve.
Thanks👍
brilliant, thanks mate
The world class move!
Fantastic video Steve, an old playing partner of mine told me to leave my finger and thumb off, I had forgotten all about it until know mate cheers Peter
Thanks for the demonstration on the middle two fingers on the right hand. Squeezing them during the down swing never occurred to me.. I must have missed that when reading Hogan’s book. I do keep my right thumb an index finger quiet and relaxed, however.
Love your videos.
Very good information... I'd have never have thought of that. Keep up the tips 😃
This will be tested tonight. Looks very good.
loving this Steve!
Hi Steve I absolutely love your videos.
You may recall that Ben Hogan wrote: ´Gripping the club with the right thumb and forefinger off the shaft helps golfers to accustom themselves to the feeling of strong, correct grip in which both hands works together as one unit. However he never suggested anyone to play golf this way.
Hogan also wrote as you just demonstrated in your video. ‘The reason for applying a correct grip brings into play the correct movements of all the muscles of the golfer’s arms and body.’ He also strongly suggested that once the golfer sets his hands correctly on the grip as one unit it would be best to forget about manipulating with their hands and wrists as this takes tremendous timing and practice on any golfer’s part.
You are 100 percent correct advising us viewer that in order to prevent casting of our club to never ever touch the tips of right trail finger with the tips of our trail right thumb. However this being said; I think you would agree that the trail thumb and index finger correctly placed on the grip as you demonstrated are essential to keep to preventing any wobbling of our club head at the top of our swing. Correct? And that once our grip is set on the club as one units as Hogan and you recommend, our hands and wrists on our club need not be manipulated by us in any way as the weight of the club head will work our hands an wrist for us. Cheers
Cheers Steve will give it a go been to slappy with my striking lately 👍⛳👍
Eureka! So simple yet effective! Finally there’s a better (and more constructive) use for my middle finger 😉
Steve and anyone interested.. this has made the biggest difference in swing speed i've seen. I've been working on technique and speed just using my 4 iron in the garden/net for about 3 weeks. I could get to 96 mph using a wild step through, but that no good to man nor beast on course. Fastest I had with fast proper swing was 85mph. Just tried this for 30 mins video in myself and checking on prgr. After some practice I can comfortably repeat a 90mph swing. Dont get me wrong this is out my boots, but standard comfortable swing is now 83-85mph.
Obviously I need to check strike etc, but I could see the difference in how right arm tucked in naturally and the relasing of pressure in index and thumb looks like it was a power leak.
So long story short thanks and looks like this grip refinment has another benefit. At least for me. Well chuffed!!
That’s great news. It’s amazing how people pick up different elements of golf technique from my videos and not necessarily the topic of the actual video. That’s the beauty of our game, constantly evolving process.
Thanks so much for the productive comments.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Love it mate. Such a good way of looking at the grip and pressure. I remember doing this as a junior, and something I should perhaps go back too on the range and practice swing to eliminate the strike 👍
Thanks Rob👍👍
I tried this grip technique last week and was amazed how it changed my ball's flight path. My driver and iron were both a lot straighter. My buddy tried it too at the same time, but not with the same results. As much as he uses a strong grip and snap hooks the ball a lot, didn't work for him, but I don't blame this grip, I blame his strong grip. For me, I felt like I was more in the slot than before. Always trying to fight the "over-the-top" swing, this grip actually made me feel like I wasn't doing it as much. And with a round of golf with the most consistent swings in probably ever, it made the round very enjoyable. Thank you for your videos.
Many years ago I actually saw John Schlee play, but I never knew about this way of gripping the club. Thanks for the tip and I will try it out at the range this week.
Hope you make it Steve, love your attitude, it’s not about you. Genuinely passing on really interesting and good, solid advice.
Hit it solid all day with this tip…thank you!
I absolutely love this. Can’t wait to ad it to my game. Thank you. 🤘
Excellent
Just come across you, excellent explanation
Good stuff Steve 👍🏼
Another gem, thanks
Fascinating 🙏
Thanks Steve
I’m really looking forward to trying this. I presume this grip assists with chipping & bunker shots too?
In lockdown so can’t practice 😞
Thanks Steve
Magic… have had horrible time coming over the top.. frustrating when I drive well and struggle to get par.. using tip today.. 2 birdies n missed 3 other short ones.. if my putting was better would have broken 80 .. thanks pal
Since I subscribed… Ive gone from 14.9 to 11.2.. and still dropping!!👍🙏
Another nugget that nobody ever mentions. Makes great sense, as do all your vids. Pardon me now, I’m heading to the range.
I found this out by accident on the range about a month ago. I had no idea if it was a result of doing something else wrong in the swing. I'm glad to know it is SUPPOSED to work! :-)
Very interesting video, well done. Been a Hogan fan for over 50 years, thanks for covering the "Five Lessons". :)
I will try at the driving range, thanks mate.
"Pinching" is a strong reflex for me. This also prevents me from 'feeling' the clubhead during the swing. I literally take my right index finger off the club when I play, just like you discuss. Try it!
Awesome as usual. Over the top May be gone. JB/ NC
Holy. Shit. This tip, as well as a video on the right elbow (elbows before hands, hands before club) helped me hit my irons so flush, and with consistency I have been struggling so hard to obtain. I played today and it was almost as if someone else was taking my shots for me, it felt so good... and I was surprised by each shot even though by the end of the round I shouldn't have been. I was hitting the green from 170 yards out... I NEVER do that. Something else was almost as good as my shots: the sound of my swing through contact... like a real golfer! I only lost a few balls because I over-clubbed based on how I previously hit them, and of course I sliced a few into the woods with my driver. Baby steps.
Thanks so much man. You're the best teacher on CZcams.
Excellent Jon👏🏻👍
Really good
Thanks again
Thanks ya wee skunner. Love it.
Great, great video- also, this explains to me very clearly why when I watched super slow motion videos of Fred Couples swing, you can actually SEE his right forefinger and thumb very loosely almost in some cases letting go of the club handle. I’m a believer
You beat me to it. I watched that video as well some time back. I thought it was a "quirk" of his with his loose easy swing. Seems he knew about this, maybe?. I have never heard or seen what is on this video before but will give it a try.
@@alanduncan9204 v j Singh does the same.
Your the first pro I've heard talk about what the left thumb is doing in the down swing . Interesting
