No the real reason 2D animation went out of style in Hollywood is that it takes a particular skill set a lot of people can't or won't cultivate. That means 2D animators are rare and can't be bullied and abused into complacency by Hollywood big wigs like actors or 3d animators because everyone and their mom has had at least one dream of being a Hollywood big wig and 3D animators are a dime a dozen because several industries from engineering to video games need them.

I really do respect the acting job that Martin Freeman did playing Bilbo in the P.J. movies, but for me Orson Bean will always be the voice of Bilbo Baggins. Same goes for John Huston's voice as Gandalf.
Those voices were born to play Tolkien characters.

I love the depiction of the elves here. Don’t get me wrong, they’re completely different from how they were envisioned in Tolkien’s Middle Earth, but "the Hobbit" was born as children’s story based more on traditional folktales than grand ancient epics (though there was a lot of that influence too) and this movie captures this dimension of the story in my opinion.

This guy was practically locked in an Elvish prison for weeks, was busted out and shoved into a barrel and into water and was close to possibly drowning, barely had good enough sleep, rest, and recuperation, is in charge and responsible of twelve other dwarves and a burglar (Bilbo), and is trying to get to the Lonely Mountain in one piece to reclaim his long, lost kingdom with his adventuring party. And when he is discovered, he still tries to maintain that royal and masculine dignity by announcing who he is, just before passing out after saying "I... have... returned." I half expect with the new film coming up in 2 weeks that there is a slim hope a rendition of this song will make it in, though Jackson's middle earth seems to have painted the elves more like the Vulcans than singing merry folk, but, if they're drunk, I can almost see a half hearted version sung by the two elves in the wine cellar. I didn't mind that the goblin town song was nearly omitted since in context why would the goblins be singing (though the great goblin singing a bar was quite humorous), and part of me really hopes that for Mirkwood they don't have Martin Freeman singing the Attercop song while he's stabbing hideous giant arachnids in the face (sorry, "Stinging" would be more appropriate)

Yes, sadly, Jackson does not seem to have differentiated between wartime and peacetime elves. Certainly, with the shadow of Mordor and Sauron looming over them, we may expect the elves of Lord of the Rings to be serious and resolute, yet even they sang at times.
The elves of this era should be merry and festive (if still a suspicious of dwarves), not angry and violent.

VikingFyre I know this sounds weird, but when Bilbo is "stinging" the spiders, there was supposed to be a song played, called "Old Fat Spider" but it did not make the cut. Its on the soundtrack though

Interesting. You seem to have ripped this clip from the DVD version which is missing some audio. Right before Bilbo says, "Oh, stop complaining! I never promised to burgle you first class accomdations!", there's the sound of knocking on barrels and complaints from the dwarves.
    Good song nonetheless.

That song was taken out of context. Also, think of the era this movie was made in. This was popular stuff back then. Finally, its not that bad. I think its quite catchy myself.

Eh, I think they each have their merits. Animated film hands-down wins on the soundtrack.
My main issue with the animated film is that the pacing is too fast at times. Goblin Town comes to mind for "bare minimum" status, since I'm pretty sure the party spent more screen-time getting captured than in or fleeing Goblin Town. The Jackson film has the added benefit of being a prequel, so it can more closely tie itself to the Lord of the Rings. For example, the Necromancer that Gandalf fought in the original Hobbit book turned out to be Sauron, but because Tolkien wasn't thinking that far ahead at the time, no clues were given in The Hobbit to said Necromancer's nature. Jackson had to fill time, so he expanded on the things the book summed up with an exposition dump. Namely, Gandalf's side jobs and the battle at the end.
So, for me, I'd say it's pick your poison: do you want the adaptation that has the same issues as the book, or the one that replaces old issues with new ones?
