Quest and the rest of the roots, are incredible musicians and highly intelligent. I do wonder how Jimmy even got them but I'm glad he did cause now they get the recognition they deserve
+javiera vasquez Agree with all of the above, but to be fair in terms of getting the recognition they deserve, they have had multiple gold and platinum albums and been a highly rated group in their genre long before Jimmy came around. But I get what you mean in terms of universal attention :)

I know Jimmy isn't the best interviewer, but there is a reason why people love him. I honestly believe he's a good guy, and loves to have a good time. He's down to earth and not afraid to look like a goof ball...Alot of people relate to him. & lets be honest, sometimes it's like pulling teeth to get celebrities to loosen up

People are so hard on him, like how about you get up there and get celebrities to talk and entertain at the same time. Jimmy is the best and gets shit on for no good reason. I don't think it's a fake laugh or a bad interviewer. People are full of hateful shit with no reasoning behind it.
People dog him for laughing during interviews but to me, it just shows how much he truly loves his gig. He's my fav.

DivaDelgado128 this could be incorrect but I heard he laughs like that from snl. He would try so hard to stop laughing that he’s trained himself to cut his laugh short. I think that’s why people think it’s fake. When he laughs it switches off quickly, I think that’s why it comes off that way.

+Jupjeet Sandhu Actually, Jimmy complemented Quest perfectly b/c Quest isn't a fast storyteller & was kinda nervous...when Jimmy quickly explained his conversation w/ their friend about who he should get as a band & the guy telling him that the Roots wouldn't do it - it was a perfect intervention b/c Quest was going to skip it, he didn't witness it & it showed how little of a chance Jimmy had to get them...AND it was funny. He later explained the pyramid as ''cheerleader pyramid'' b/c ppl didn't get Quest's explanation-reference and then the ending was also funny while mentioning a couple more chefs & praising the interviews. Jimmy did a great job here.

Voicu Violeta While I agree that that one remark that Jimmy made lead the conversation to those other points which were admittedly funny, I don't think that's indicative of his interview skills. Jimmy is hella awkward and isn't that great at conversing, which, imo, aren't qualities that a good interviewer should have. Jimmy asked "do you remember when I asked you to join the band..." Who asks that? Obviously he remembers. He could've just as easily asked something like " I remember a few years ago this happened blah blah blah and I asked you to be a part of the band. What was going through your mind then?" Instead, Jimmy gives a question that requires a yes/no response i.e. "do you remember?". Quest himself was the one who added to it, when he could have easily said "yeah I remember". This is a common theme in Jimmy's other interviews as well. Not to mention Jimmy tends to interject and say what he feels to be important when others are telling stories, and while it may have worked in this instance because Quest was a slow story-teller, as you said, it doesn't always go over well with other guests. I only watch his interviews because the people he invites have cool and entertaining stories to tell, but Jimmy adds almost nothing to the conversation other than cringe-worthy jokes and seemingly forced laughter. Jimmy seems like a genuinely nice guy and I can see and respect why people like him, but I just find his interview skills horrendous. I do like his sketches though

That decision to have the Roots as the show's band was the best decision Jimmy and the producers made. I remember when the show first came on and most people were down to give it a try just because they heard The Roots were the live band.
It's a great show with a great host and an amazing band.
For people who have never heard of the Roots, just not calling them "the band" hooks you in.
The Roots are the only reason I became a TS viewer.

Please make this a regular thing!! Quest is the perfect guest for a talk show since he's got stories for days and is a great storyteller. Whenever Jimmy's telling a story and the camera pans to Quest for his reaction, that instantly makes the story twice as funny lol
Agreed. I geek on any bit of info ?uest adds to a story when Jimmy or a guest mention him. I've been a fan of his story telling for many years. Even when it gets heavily referential or "coded". Deciphering is a big part of what I dig about it.

Questlove says it here - money and a comfortable gig. That's what this is in the first place and that's reason no. 1 they did it.
Roots are legends, but they never became big in the mainstream. Always somewhat niche, somewhat below the radar. This must've influenced their finances.
So if they wanted to stop traveling around and doing gigs all over the place to pick up bucks, at this point, becoming a house band for Jimmy was a very smart choice.
people dont really take their music seriously so this is the perfect format for them to express themselves to the largest audience possible. i felt similar but i really love how they embody their principles.
all the best rappers are cryptic and underrated.

+James Bergman Because he's not interrupting and pretending that everything Quest says is the funniest thing ever. That slapping the table, bending over guffawing Jimmy does over the slightest humorous comment is just annoying and fake. I wish he would just cool it. Jimmy does that with every other guest, but with Quest his laugh was real and he let him tell the story. Jimmy shouldd do this with EVERY guest.

For sure, and one of the best bands ever in general. That said, a lot of late night shows are stacked with talented bands. Fred Armisen’s band on Seths show, Reggie Watts with Corden, Jon Batiste on Colbert, and Conan’s old band was great also.

That's pretty terrible. He's watched by 580,000 people on average nightly, which is AWFUL. No one watches him. In the tv world if you're getting those kinds of ratings, you get canceled. I saw the Roots on tour with 311 in the early 2000's. I remember everyone was so amazed at how well they played their instruments. Crazy to see them get so big

Was digging through crates at Amoeba Records in West Hollywood around 1999 and look to my right and see this guy with an afro and pick sticking out of his hair and was just stunned cuz I immediately recognized him. Told him how much of a fan I was of the Roots and the song Distortion to Static. Coolest guy ever! Will never forget that day!
